Lanterns Episode 3 “OutKast” Synopsis

Episode Written by: Vanessa Baden

Episode Directed By: Steven Williams

In the past, John's father, John Sr., fails a test to become a Green Lantern, leaving him traumatised. Later, Lianna, a member of the Guardians of the Universe, visits John's mother, Bernadette, and offers the family recompense by giving John a chance to join the Green Lantern Corps in the future. When John is 5 years old, his parents train him to be fearless. Years later, John joins the United States Marine Corps and is assigned an assassination mission, but Hal's intervention causes it to fail. John is dishonourably discharged, and Bernadette enrols him in art school so he can pursue his passion. In 2016, a Guardians recruiter approaches John, who successfully passes his test. He is sent to the next stage of the interview. She offers him the role as the new Green Lantern, but he must not reveal this to Hal Jordan and has to pretend to accept his guidance as his apprentice.

John returns home to tell his parents he finds Hal Jordan has told them his news and, privately tells John he does not need a sidekick and he'll only get the Green Lantern ring over his dead body.

00:05.895 --> 00:08.056

00:09.757 --> 00:10.758
[JOHN STEWART]: I had a mission to complete.

00:11.579 --> 00:12.499
[LIANNA]: Perhaps you were stubborn.

00:12.860 --> 00:16.962
[JOHN STEWART]: I had a mission to complete.

00:18.623 --> 00:20.985
[LIANNA]: Your training must have resulted in great loneliness.

00:22.929 --> 00:30.433
[LIANNA]: as humans require high levels of social connection that isolation appears to be in direct opposition to your programming.

00:32.315 --> 00:35.136
[JOHN STEWART]: Humans on program were raised.

00:37.017 --> 00:38.438
[LIANNA]: I do not understand the distinction.

00:39.799 --> 00:41.720
[JOHN STEWART]: Well, there is one.

01:06.663 --> 01:08.244
[DEREK]: Welcome back fellow guardians.

01:08.284 --> 01:09.845

01:16.548 --> 01:18.729
[JOHN]: I am one of your other host, John.

01:19.209 --> 01:20.250
[JOHN]: And that's it for this week.

01:20.350 --> 01:22.791
[DEREK]: Just the two of us on the third episode.

01:23.071 --> 01:26.633
[DEREK]: Unfortunately, poor Chris got taken ill in between last week of this week.

01:26.653 --> 01:30.074
[DEREK]: It was really excited to come back, especially for an origin story episode.

01:30.094 --> 01:31.395
[DEREK]: Like we have here episode three.

01:31.455 --> 01:32.415
[DEREK]: So I hope you get

01:35.917 --> 01:37.057
[JOHN]: Yes, absolutely.

01:37.617 --> 01:40.338
[JOHN]: But it will just be myself and Derek.

01:40.418 --> 01:47.860
[JOHN]: Yes, our spoiler filled discussion of episode 3 of lanterns called Outcast.

01:48.140 --> 01:59.683
[JOHN]: Before we get into all the episode details here and our initial thoughts just a quick reminder for their lanterns to pop on over to the website at tvpodcastindustries.com to

02:01.623 --> 02:15.563
[JOHN]: any blue green or white lantern podcast player of your choice, a reminder that we do have our Rushville redneck bar quiz going on as well.

02:15.603 --> 02:16.164
[JOHN]: So we'll be...

02:17.085 --> 02:31.993
[JOHN]: Coming out with our third question in the pub quiz series, where you can get your hand on some goodies and send all your answers into feedback at tvpodcastindustries.com.

02:32.373 --> 02:38.817
[JOHN]: After our eighth and final question of the pub quiz series, send them all in together.

02:39.257 --> 02:42.259
[JOHN]: You can also send your feedback at that email as well.

02:42.459 --> 02:42.599
[JOHN]: Yeah.

02:42.800 --> 02:46.865
[DEREK]: And if you're missing any questions that we've given, I'd so far popping up with the website at tvpodcastindustries.com.

02:46.905 --> 02:50.430
[DEREK]: I have put up the page finally where the first two questions are listed up there.

02:50.710 --> 02:53.413
[DEREK]: Or you can go listen to the first two episodes if you want to as well.

02:53.433 --> 02:59.421
[DEREK]: But yeah, as John said, the third question coming up later in the episode, we hope you're going to enjoy joining us for our book quiz.

03:00.523 --> 03:07.569
[JOHN]: Yes, but Derek, what are some of the episodes details for this third episode?

03:08.069 --> 03:11.953
[DEREK]: Well, the show winners for the show of course are Chris Mundi, Tom King and him Lindloff.

03:12.233 --> 03:17.818
[DEREK]: The writer for this episode is Vanessa Baden, who co-wrote last week's episode along with Chris Mundi, but this is her episode.

03:18.358 --> 03:21.883
[DEREK]: of the show here, and we talked about it all over her previous work.

03:21.903 --> 03:31.634
[DEREK]: On last week's episode, this episode is directed by Stephen Williams, and he directed an episode of loads of shows that we've covered here on the podcast, including an episode of Agent Carter way back in the day.

03:31.654 --> 03:34.477
[DEREK]: I think that was around our first or second year of podcasting John.

03:35.378 --> 03:36.339
[DEREK]: Yeah, absolutely.

03:36.439 --> 03:41.983
[DEREK]: Also directed to episodes of the exceptional Watchman series, I directed episode 3 and episode 6.

03:42.303 --> 03:52.331
[DEREK]: Episode 6 was pretty much critically acclaimed to episode 6, this extraordinary being where Angela went back and experienced the past, using that drug nostalgia, if you remember that one.

03:52.351 --> 03:55.713
[DEREK]: So pretty much a big standard in that series.

03:55.814 --> 04:01.478
[DEREK]: And I would say this episode that is directed here of Lanterns will probably be a bit of a standard for a lot of people as well.

04:02.218 --> 04:16.564
[DEREK]: And he also directed season two episode five of the last of us and directed many many episodes of Lost where he got his big star I think it did 23 episodes of Lost over the course of their um six seasons of the show five seasons six years of their so yeah So many many episodes almost full season.

04:16.584 --> 04:17.525
[DEREK]: He directed of Lost.

04:17.805 --> 04:24.888
[DEREK]: Wow So John do you want to tell us what the game is with your synopsis four lanterns episode three outcast

04:25.912 --> 04:34.697
[JOHN]: Sure, in the past, John's father, Johnny Stewart, fails a test to become a Green Lantern, leaving him traumatised.

04:35.217 --> 04:46.643
[JOHN]: Later, Leanna, a member of the Guardians of the Universe, visits John's mother Bernardette and offers the family recompense by giving John a chance to join the Green Lantern course in the future.

04:47.243 --> 04:50.585
[JOHN]: When John is five years old, his parents train him to be fearless.

04:51.225 --> 04:56.791
[JOHN]: Years later, John joins the United States Marine Corps and is assigned to an assassination mission.

04:57.131 --> 04:59.654
[JOHN]: But how is intervention causes it to fail?

05:00.154 --> 05:08.022
[JOHN]: John is dishonorably discharged and burn a debt and rolls him in art school so he can pursue his other passion drawing.

05:08.643 --> 05:16.829
[JOHN]: In 2016, a Guardian's recruiter approaches John who successfully passes his test, he is sent to the next stage of the interview.

05:17.209 --> 05:27.437
[JOHN]: Where Leanna offers him the role as the new Green Lantern, but he must not reveal this to Hal Jordan and has to pretend to accept his guidance as his apprentice.

05:28.077 --> 05:34.224
[JOHN]: John returns home to tell his mom and dad, but finds how Jordan, who has told his parents already the news.

05:34.524 --> 05:41.992
[JOHN]: But privately tells John he does not need a sidekick, and he'll only get the green lantern ring over his dead body.

05:43.824 --> 05:46.267
[DEREK]: Yeah, what a great ending to this episode.

05:47.068 --> 05:59.862
[DEREK]: Oh, I know how Jordan is a massive fan favorite character's been around for many many years, as loads and loads of different stories to tell, but this episode of course, being all about John, gives you a brand new perspective on John's relationship.

06:00.282 --> 06:05.845
[DEREK]: and John Cena's relationship with Hal Jordan, which is really interesting because, you know, we've mentioned it before.

06:05.865 --> 06:13.029
[DEREK]: We're not huge comic book readers of Greenland, and we've read loads of those comic books, book Greenland, and kind of pop to the age of some of the comic books that we read.

06:13.049 --> 06:15.650
[DEREK]: So we don't have a huge connection with this character of Hal Jordan.

06:16.111 --> 06:18.472
[DEREK]: And we haven't seen very much of him in the show so far.

06:18.512 --> 06:27.097
[DEREK]: So to get the origin story of John and where he got to in this, at this point in 2016, is a really interesting choice, isn't it?

06:30.758 --> 06:49.648
[JOHN]: I think it's an interesting one this because, I mean, certainly the ending, you're just there going, you know, how will Jordan, it's just his demeanor and everything, and we will get to that in detail, but he doesn't exude warmth or anything, anything of the sort.

06:50.048 --> 06:56.051
[JOHN]: But I think it's a really interesting exploration of John Stewart.

06:57.192 --> 06:57.993
[JOHN]: in this.

06:58.233 --> 07:12.848
[JOHN]: But I think importantly, it's a really interesting angle on the guardians, because actually, at the end of this, I came away thinking, okay, this may all be being presented

07:18.298 --> 07:31.548
[JOHN]: John Stewart is the bad guy or anything like that, but certainly that he's being used for a particular purpose and it's it's very interesting how just some subtle

07:32.827 --> 07:42.569
[JOHN]: parts of the conversation and just the way Leanna is trying to direct certain thoughts of John Stuart during the interview.

07:42.909 --> 07:44.530
[JOHN]: It's just really, really good.

07:44.550 --> 07:52.591
[JOHN]: Of course we get the flash racks to kind of how John Stuart came about and some really sort of big moments I would think.

07:53.172 --> 07:54.292
[JOHN]: And as I say, I'm not

07:55.192 --> 08:10.059
[JOHN]: two up on how Jordan John Stuart as green lanterns and for the earth sector and and so on but and and even how the ring process works but I like how it is portrays here

08:10.259 --> 08:27.224
[DEREK]: Well, interestingly, behind the scenes stuff, they say this story of John Stewart's origin hasn't really been told in this kind of depth in the comic books either, so they've got a bit of a blank card to be able to tell a story that one's a tell, so this is the story that shows to tell, there are some

08:28.064 --> 08:52.421
[DEREK]: origins here and there they say but nothing, nothing too in debt that's not like you have issue one here's your new green lantern and this is how he became the green lantern so they felt they had an opportunity here to tell this story but I do want to say one thing before we go into the top three points and it's kind of interesting it's a quote from David Lindel after you're in some of the interviews he's had over the last couple of weeks about the show or at least

08:57.624 --> 09:01.748
[DEREK]: and it's very much the opinion that I have a bit the show and probably the reason why I'm enjoying lanterns so much.

09:03.854 --> 09:08.996
[DEREK]: And he had this quote about given where we left Hal Jordan at the end of episode 1.

09:09.336 --> 09:13.317
[DEREK]: That, you know, a major character, he's got a bullet in his head, he's frozen to death.

09:13.657 --> 09:24.261
[DEREK]: He's in, he's in 2026 and his quote was, I hope people will take the ride with us and see where they are at the end of the series with the stories of these characters.

09:24.761 --> 09:32.484
[DEREK]: It doesn't really matter where we've left the character at the end of episode 1, what really matters is, where we all end up together at the end of episode 8 of this season.

09:32.884 --> 09:35.286
[DEREK]: and I totally agree with that opinion of the show.

09:35.306 --> 09:48.894
[DEREK]: I don't know, not necessarily just to do with lanterns, but if you're going to watch a series watch it to the end before you have any opinion formed, because exactly as you mentioned, John, I think there are twists and turns of the conversations here that can be played out in very different ways the series goes on.

09:48.914 --> 09:57.480
[DEREK]: And it's great to speculate, great to have fun discussing it, but making your decision as to what they're doing with the character before you've seen the full story is quite a big deal.

09:57.660 --> 09:58.981
[JOHN]: Absolutely, absolutely.

09:59.041 --> 10:00.202
[JOHN]: I mean, I think,

10:01.042 --> 10:06.363
[JOHN]: If you think of it as a book, you can put a book down after maybe one chapter.

10:06.383 --> 10:15.645
[JOHN]: You might go, no, I'm just not getting this style or whatever, or two or three or whatever, or you just end up finding yourself that you're not picking it up again.

10:15.745 --> 10:17.245
[JOHN]: It's not that riveting reads.

10:17.545 --> 10:18.945
[JOHN]: And I get that.

10:19.065 --> 10:25.266
[JOHN]: But equally, if you are raising a book, most people will read it from to back cover.

10:25.466 --> 10:25.726
[JOHN]: And then

10:29.643 --> 10:30.423
[JOHN]: to some extent.

10:31.544 --> 10:46.032
[JOHN]: There's a lot of views that come in after one episode because actually the whole package is being reviewed based on one episode and it really taints it so that third used to lend a lot for saying that.

10:46.332 --> 10:51.574
[JOHN]: Interesting idea was to be honest and I think this goes for a lot.

10:51.594 --> 10:52.235
[JOHN]: It's like you know

10:54.182 --> 11:12.490
[JOHN]: watch the whole thing and then you might have some basis for judging whether you personally don't like that interpretation or not, but it doesn't mean say it's bad or middling or whatever and also I think you know there's just a lot of people that would be coming to this from a really different angle.

11:12.510 --> 11:13.070
[JOHN]: Absolutely.

11:13.090 --> 11:16.052
[JOHN]: I mean and I say this is someone who absolutely is

11:17.338 --> 11:32.325
[JOHN]: a nerd and a geek loves his comic books and so on, but I do appreciate that there are people elsewhere in this world that don't necessarily or haven't had their hairs in a graphic novel or a comic since they were probably five.

11:32.545 --> 11:39.789
[JOHN]: So they're tech coming at this probably from the whole mystery of it all and I really like that.

11:39.909 --> 11:41.610
[JOHN]: I think that's a very open.

11:41.990 --> 11:44.892
[DEREK]: Yeah, I think this point was more to do with the fans of how Jordan,

11:46.276 --> 11:51.140
[DEREK]: jumped to the conclusion that they've done how Jordan wrong by that one scene in the first episode.

11:51.400 --> 11:52.821
[DEREK]: They're still quite a few episodes ago.

11:52.841 --> 11:59.946
[DEREK]: And even here, he isn't a whole in this episode, but I still don't think his story's been told very much in the season so far.

11:59.966 --> 12:02.528
[DEREK]: And I think we're going to get a little bit more about how.

12:02.568 --> 12:03.749
[JOHN]: Yeah, I think so.

12:04.489 --> 12:09.933
[JOHN]: Yeah, but I think let's get into our powering points for this episode.

12:09.953 --> 12:11.695
[DEREK]: Yeah, our three powering moments.

12:11.715 --> 12:12.815
[DEREK]: Let's get into a powering point.

12:13.096 --> 12:13.496
[DEREK]: Number one,

12:20.046 --> 12:23.488
[DEREK]: I'm still leaving it on this May, it's still making me laugh.

12:23.888 --> 12:25.149
[DEREK]: We kind of have to call it this.

12:25.169 --> 12:30.232
[DEREK]: You know, one of our first Marvel podcast was Daredevil.

12:30.272 --> 12:32.533
[DEREK]: This is our DC podcast talking about Lantern.

12:32.573 --> 12:36.975
[DEREK]: So our first major point has to be called the child without fear.

12:37.796 --> 12:40.597
[JOHN]: Instead of the man without the man without fear, which is Daredevil.

12:40.877 --> 12:44.739
[JOHN]: And dare I say it for little young John Stuart.

12:46.168 --> 12:48.709
[JOHN]: His father could fire golf balls at him.

12:48.869 --> 12:49.630
[JOHN]: He could have.

12:49.810 --> 12:52.371
[JOHN]: Hens are opening those musicals.

12:52.411 --> 12:53.091
[JOHN]: He could have.

12:53.231 --> 12:53.732
[JOHN]: Out of the points.

12:53.932 --> 13:09.259
[DEREK]: If John was maybe slightly less scared than he is, but no, John is the one that changes the game from absolutely, I shoot the apple sitting on that stand over there to daddy can you shoot this apple off my head.

13:09.679 --> 13:15.342
[DEREK]: So let's get into a bit of the detail about how this family get to the point where they're trading their son to be completely without fear.

13:16.142 --> 13:34.972
[JOHN]: Yeah, I mean, I think the big thing here, and other than the fact this shock horror, John Stuart's dad is called Johnny Stewart, and is the ring actually made the rounds around a whole area, and that

13:36.062 --> 13:47.934
[JOHN]: John Stuart Sr. was also visited by the ring, held in the green bubble and asked to you have fear effectively, you know, are you afraid?

13:48.214 --> 13:53.620
[JOHN]: But wasn't chosen because in a sense he was, and he

13:54.160 --> 13:54.720
[JOHN]: responded.

13:54.760 --> 14:10.264
[JOHN]: He responded, yes, I am afraid what is going on and to me that was massive the interesting because you just, in previous iterations of this, I had always just assumed it just went to halge or it was a single choice.

14:10.344 --> 14:19.586
[JOHN]: It was kind of, you know, however it did it, it was ruminated on and it just went to the person that was the next.

14:21.310 --> 14:23.312
[JOHN]: choice for being a green lamp.

14:23.332 --> 14:30.277
[JOHN]: Yes, but having said that, the more and more I think about it, because that's what happened in my brain over time.

14:30.317 --> 14:34.900
[JOHN]: That's how it's been perceived, because I didn't really follow the green lanterns and so on.

14:35.220 --> 14:38.703
[JOHN]: But actually, it is the fact that it comes with a question.

14:38.963 --> 14:42.846
[JOHN]: So if you answer the question wrong, yes, it's going to be the problem.

14:42.866 --> 14:44.687
[JOHN]: So actually there's a whole rake of candidates.

14:44.707 --> 14:46.709
[JOHN]: So I kind of like this notion

14:50.922 --> 14:58.787
[JOHN]: The ring is, you know, in its own way, doing its own interview process, like we see Leanna do in this episode as well.

14:58.967 --> 15:09.313
[JOHN]: And I like the notion that we've had reports back that people have been left traumatized, that the process isn't maybe what you would expect to happen here on earth.

15:09.373 --> 15:15.797
[JOHN]: So like that whole thing to me was really, really important, really telling, they're actually

15:17.898 --> 15:20.881
[JOHN]: isn't a first choice here to be a Greenland.

15:20.982 --> 15:23.344
[JOHN]: He just answered the exam question, correct?

15:23.384 --> 15:25.266
[DEREK]: Well, in many respects.

15:25.487 --> 15:32.654
[JOHN]: And so I just think that's a really good dimension that either, it's just kind of re-refreshed me with here.

15:32.975 --> 15:33.535
[JOHN]: Because

15:35.701 --> 15:46.867
[JOHN]: you have Johnny Stewart getting freaked out by us, clearly it affects his marriage, it affects his job, people that in work are thinking he's gone crazy.

15:46.887 --> 15:49.609
[JOHN]: He's telling everybody you've been to buy an alien in the middle of the night.

15:49.709 --> 15:58.433
[JOHN]: Bernard E. is wife has asked him to actually move out the house because he shoots out the TV because he sees how old children and he's like going, that could have

16:01.656 --> 16:05.784
[JOHN]: You know, they begin to form following the Anna's, um...

16:06.960 --> 16:15.487
[DEREK]: visit to the Stuart household they and the owners that play by Laura Lennie should be guardian that's taking on human form here.

16:15.507 --> 16:26.355
[DEREK]: I don't think that they ever say the name in the episode is just in the credits at the end that she's called the Alan when she's being interviewed she's called the Alan because I was so confused why they wouldn't say her name throughout the episode.

16:27.216 --> 16:29.738
[DEREK]: Well I had to just keep calling a Lennie exactly.

16:29.858 --> 16:31.379
[DEREK]: I'm like Laura Lennie.

16:31.399 --> 16:34.521
[JOHN]: Because I was like Laura Lennie's character and I can't

16:36.543 --> 16:58.702
[JOHN]: But it is a very Anna, so it's close, but eventually with Laurelini's character, Leanna sort of arriving at his house to talk to ultimately talking to his wife, apologizing for any distress or alarm because they've heard many candidates are in stress and with emotional turmoil as a result of that.

16:59.182 --> 17:01.124
[JOHN]: And she's like, so are you an alien then?

17:01.144 --> 17:03.506
[JOHN]: Because her husband has been talking about this.

17:05.367 --> 17:19.431
[JOHN]: and she doesn't believe him and you have just a quite a nice shot of Leanna transforming from human form because her natural form apparently is too distressing.

17:19.771 --> 17:30.614
[JOHN]: We don't see the face, I wouldn't say it looks too distressing from the back side but equally we don't see the face and all the front of the body might be very different.

17:30.914 --> 17:54.854
[DEREK]: However, I was expecting that kind of moment to look from Beetlejuice where he shows his face and you see the people freaking out in front of you see the front side of his face, but I love that again, Bernadette just goes, I'm not the type of person that gets just that that's going to get distressed by this, but you do see something creep across her face when she sees it goes, okay, definitely an alien right, let's go for a coffee inside and have a discussion to back this face.

17:54.894 --> 17:55.194
[DEREK]: Yeah.

17:55.214 --> 17:55.975
[DEREK]: So yeah.

17:56.695 --> 18:14.609
[JOHN]: And I think ultimately then, you know, over coffee, you know, we hear about, you know, the process of the ring not being ideal, that you hear her sort of saying to Leanna, you know, asking a black man in white America, are you afraid?

18:15.950 --> 18:16.971
[JOHN]: You're probably going to get back.

18:17.271 --> 18:17.952
[JOHN]: Yes, I am.

18:18.732 --> 18:20.534
[JOHN]: Rather than no, I'm fearless.

18:20.614 --> 18:24.497
[JOHN]: I'm without fear, which is what they're looking for and what the Anna explains to her.

18:24.837 --> 18:37.066
[JOHN]: And this forms the opinion for Bernardette that that's in many respects, the only reason why Howard Jordan got the gig effectively was because he came from a privileged background, he's white.

18:37.106 --> 18:37.827
[JOHN]: So therefore,

18:38.367 --> 18:41.390
[JOHN]: He was able to say, I don't live in fear.

18:41.710 --> 18:43.011
[JOHN]: And that's the difference.

18:43.032 --> 18:47.616
[JOHN]: It's like, I don't live in fear rather than whether I'm afraid or not.

18:47.896 --> 18:48.617
[JOHN]: Exactly.

18:48.677 --> 18:52.621
[JOHN]: But I like how she does say to her, look, this is the politics on earth.

18:52.801 --> 18:57.265
[JOHN]: And you don't even, you're not aware of this.

18:58.146 --> 18:58.927
[JOHN]: And, um,

19:00.548 --> 19:17.496
[JOHN]: But I like here that Leanna sees, you know, as you're a form, miserable woman, and the same genes that the ring, you know, or qualities that the ring saw in your husband will also be present in your son, so could be a good kind of thing.

19:17.516 --> 19:19.337
[JOHN]: This could be a good candidate.

19:19.357 --> 19:19.457
[JOHN]: Yes.

19:21.059 --> 19:22.580
[JOHN]: your son is raised fearless.

19:22.640 --> 19:30.469
[JOHN]: It would warrant the Guardian's attention and I do like the Bermerset comes back, but would he get a first shot at being a lantern?

19:30.789 --> 19:40.300
[JOHN]: There's still that notion of equality here and but it ultimately leads to having to raise this child without fear.

19:40.780 --> 19:50.366
[JOHN]: And you know, there's some really good points that come through on this and actually you see Bernardette being a significant driver Yeah, across all of this.

19:50.586 --> 20:09.657
[JOHN]: She's the one that wants when when Young John Stewart puts the apple on his head and says, Look, it's like William Tell because at this moment he's been given a gun for his fifth birthday along with a green lantern out fist Yeah, and he's been told his destiny on his fifth birthday Yeah, and he's out

20:10.457 --> 20:21.100
[JOHN]: practicing his aim at five with the gun, and then he stands there with the apple on his head, and I'm like, okay, so it wasn't his dad's idea to do this.

20:21.900 --> 20:29.522
[JOHN]: He goes, look, it's like William Tell, shoot it off my head, and his dad is really like, no, I'm not going to do this, but it's his

20:33.003 --> 20:37.547
[JOHN]: her husband Johnny to shoot the apple from the head.

20:37.587 --> 20:46.015
[DEREK]: Yeah, all really based on the concept that fear is a learned behavior, which is very much the place the burner that comes from.

20:46.776 --> 20:52.782
[DEREK]: I love just that moment that she says, you know, we're raising two sons in this house, we're giving them all the opportunities.

20:52.822 --> 20:55.945
[DEREK]: We have to believe that there's a better world that they can get to.

20:55.965 --> 20:58.207
[DEREK]: We have to believe that they can inspire others.

20:58.747 --> 21:01.188
[DEREK]: or else what are we doing here at all, you know?

21:01.308 --> 21:15.731
[DEREK]: So effectively what she's giving to John is if we take away his fear if we give them all of the bases to make him equal to someone that lives that fear he also has a chance to be a green lantern which is why she pushes so hard because she is of the firm belief now.

21:16.011 --> 21:19.112
[DEREK]: She just had an alien rifle in her garden and tell her

21:19.532 --> 21:27.219
[DEREK]: it's almost, you know, hopefully not at no offense to it, it'd just be, but it's almost like the angel coming down from heaven to say there is a God.

21:27.339 --> 21:27.760
[DEREK]: Exactly.

21:27.800 --> 21:28.260
[DEREK]: God exists.

21:28.300 --> 21:36.528
[DEREK]: Well, suddenly, if you have somebody in your garden telling you that God exists and you believe even more in it and you will evangelize for it.

21:36.608 --> 21:41.012
[DEREK]: And that is what burned that becomes from this point on, where she will do absolutely anything.

21:41.592 --> 21:49.974
[DEREK]: Including allowing her son to guess at an apple shot off her head off his head to prove that he has no fear I just think it's really interesting.

21:49.994 --> 22:08.880
[DEREK]: I love just some little nods back to the first episode as well Just if you well while we're talking about this that are really liking on the first episode that opening scene We were wondering why the hell are they so scared to watch television and it's particularly this interview with Green Lantern Well guess what the last time Green Lantern was interviewed in TV or had a statement on TV They're dad to get a gun and shot the TV

22:10.140 --> 22:13.045
[DEREK]: You know, we now know now we know about the apple as well.

22:13.125 --> 22:20.816
[DEREK]: So so all those little things that we saw in those little moments in the past there They're all being filled in but very differently.

22:20.836 --> 22:24.842
[JOHN]: Yeah, and you know his two brothers Marcus and Aaron, you know

22:25.950 --> 22:26.710
[JOHN]: the two old.

22:26.831 --> 22:28.011
[JOHN]: They already know fear.

22:28.392 --> 22:29.672
[JOHN]: We can't do it with them.

22:29.692 --> 22:38.738
[JOHN]: And I like how that plays out, say on John's fifth birthday, Aaron, who's the eldest brother, gets annoyed that he's always chosen.

22:38.818 --> 22:41.099
[JOHN]: It's that the things are always done for him.

22:41.400 --> 22:43.641
[JOHN]: And this is where they're telling him about his destiny.

22:44.101 --> 22:49.184
[JOHN]: And so, and that will come to it more, I guess, empowering point number two.

22:49.244 --> 22:51.246
[JOHN]: But just how and sort of.

22:51.886 --> 22:57.089
[JOHN]: the editing and the cutting back and forth between these points and the interview.

22:57.449 --> 23:08.895
[JOHN]: And you have in a sense almost Leanna's assessment of this being provided in questioning form to John Stewart about various things.

23:08.935 --> 23:15.538
[JOHN]: Well, you know, was the isolation for you in the family given your unique upbringing, all these kind of things.

23:15.578 --> 23:16.199
[JOHN]: But but

23:17.259 --> 23:33.579
[JOHN]: I like how that interchanges, and I think whilst we're keeping the point separate, we shouldn't forget how nicely this interchanges between different flashbacks, recounting from John around the mission to the interview and so on.

23:34.360 --> 23:38.781
[JOHN]: You also have this, I just say Bernadette being really pushy.

23:38.861 --> 23:49.744
[JOHN]: I think ultimately there's a number of touchpoints here where they drop them off in a really rough part of Midway City in town to make it so very back.

23:50.804 --> 23:57.545
[JOHN]: And he comes back and she's like a left-to-port chop for you in the microwave, but he goes and John starts to cry.

23:57.866 --> 23:58.046
[JOHN]: Yes.

23:58.166 --> 24:00.726
[JOHN]: And there's these points where you can see the strain

24:04.448 --> 24:05.629
[DEREK]: Young John Stuart.

24:05.950 --> 24:19.088
[DEREK]: I was wondering about that because they dropped yeah the drop off in the city and the reason why we're saying it's midway cities because there's some graffiti on the walls in the midway panther so that was my question whether that's where this all takes place is John living in this city called midway city.

24:19.749 --> 24:19.909
[DEREK]: But

24:20.770 --> 24:44.400
[DEREK]: I did wonder about him coming home crying, because you don't see any of the journey home, he doesn't seem to have any fear, he just walks past a couple of guys who are on the side of the street and then he arrives home a couple of hours after every finish they're dinner basically and then his mom says there's a pork chop for you but he breaks down crying and I do wonder if something happened to him on the way home, like it doesn't look like he's been beaten up on the way home but they may be indicating that he was.

24:44.860 --> 25:00.942
[DEREK]: beat up on his way home, so that he would have no fear, and that just didn't give us that specific scene, just showing this kid who's been so strong from when he was five years old up until now, breaking down crying at what happened, probably means it didn't go so well in that walk home either.

25:01.202 --> 25:01.983
[JOHN]: No, exactly.

25:02.243 --> 25:07.170
[JOHN]: I mean, she absolutely relentless really pushes John.

25:07.190 --> 25:14.418
[JOHN]: I mean, he over his trying to get in contact with his satellite dish that they've bought with the Guardians.

25:14.499 --> 25:16.821
[JOHN]: And he's like, are they not answering?

25:16.861 --> 25:17.602
[JOHN]: And she's, she's,

25:18.223 --> 25:38.457
[JOHN]: I guess the birds on liars after all because the other side here is that she's get made up the story to say that the birds are watching on behalf of the gargins and they report back to them and this is where you know that's why I can't get in touch with the gargins because

25:39.197 --> 25:44.218
[JOHN]: you're not showing the progress, you're not showing the fearlessness that they're expecting.

25:44.538 --> 25:46.779
[JOHN]: And until you do, we're not going to hear anything.

25:46.819 --> 25:57.502
[JOHN]: So it's all about pushing and even which is more embedded at switches up the William Tell game and tells him effectively to shoot the Apple Office dad's head.

25:58.922 --> 26:13.198
[JOHN]: I just love that his dad is like, well, shouldn't he work up to this, like, you know, but he can't pull the trigger and I think maybe this is the moment where possibly she does believe she's taking it too far.

26:13.518 --> 26:15.721
[JOHN]: And because she comes in and she says, you know,

26:17.101 --> 26:25.869
[JOHN]: There's nothing wrong with loving your father, there's people that don't even get fathers to accept, they have to love back, it's not a weakness, it's not a weakness.

26:26.509 --> 26:30.753
[JOHN]: And you have John here in this moment saying, you know, the birds are right, I'm not good enough.

26:31.393 --> 26:32.555
[JOHN]: But Bernardette says, well,

26:33.135 --> 27:00.240
[JOHN]: Possibly I have gone too far here and she goes, well, I bathed up about the birds and they aren't in contact and you just have John saying, well, you lies You have the repeat here from from Bernardette where she's like, yeah, but we're trying to give you something here This is what we're working towards this goal as she talks about you know how again how a black man may have to raise his hand to make himself seen Yeah, because we are good enough for that

27:01.941 --> 27:05.803
[JOHN]: compared to anyone else, but sometimes we have to be seen.

27:06.943 --> 27:13.565
[JOHN]: And this is just one of the ways that you will be seen by becoming fearless and it's a relentless journey.

27:15.246 --> 27:22.509
[JOHN]: And this was she brings her theories and about how being chosen because you've privileged enough not to know fear.

27:23.489 --> 27:29.213
[JOHN]: And she's trying to, effectively make her son have the same privilege through this training that they're doing.

27:29.333 --> 27:34.156
[DEREK]: But interestingly, she tells them if he wants to stop trying now because they lied to him for this long.

27:34.176 --> 27:38.439
[DEREK]: And it's a big lie, you know, it's not like this, you know, it's not like Santa Claus.

27:38.459 --> 27:43.983
[DEREK]: He said that every bird that's out there is relaying information back to the Guardians.

27:44.523 --> 27:53.353
[DEREK]: They have told him from when he was a tiny child that that alien exists and he has a job waiting for him if he trains and Dibards are watching the whole time.

27:53.954 --> 27:55.896
[DEREK]: So quite a big lie that she's told them.

27:56.136 --> 28:00.401
[DEREK]: So Interestingly, I think the twist there is

28:01.522 --> 28:25.470
[DEREK]: when he turns around and says no mom I'm ready now and she goes I'll wake up your father and he goes no no you I'll shoot the apple off of your head at that point you're gonna I'm not too sure whether he's made that decision because she lied to him or because he wants to show where he's with it fear I'm not I'm just not sure in that specific moment maybe it's an example where he's like I am pretty angry actually maybe you need to stand in the way of my goingable decide whether whether you have fear or not

28:26.030 --> 28:29.353
[JOHN]: I do believe, I do believe it is that.

28:29.673 --> 28:34.377
[JOHN]: I believe he's got that moment where he can make that call, and he does.

28:35.297 --> 28:54.554
[JOHN]: because he's a clever kid and he's able to do that because she's basically just said we lie to you, we tell you not to lie and and at the same time she's given the kids agency as you say to make the choice to continue or not.

28:54.814 --> 28:57.877
[DEREK]: And there's also a little bit more of the she's

28:58.497 --> 29:16.200
[DEREK]: almost a bit more unbored than his father if she's the one that is given the directions so she is almost his first leader his first senior officer giving him directions but given them through his father and his father did well it didn't really want to be shot at asked by his tell your old son right yeah so

29:17.061 --> 29:23.022
[DEREK]: He's kind of going, well, if you're going to stand beside me and you're the one that wants me to learn all this stuff, I want it to be you here.

29:23.422 --> 29:26.623
[DEREK]: I want us to be able to have that relationship, you know.

29:26.903 --> 29:31.824
[DEREK]: Interestingly, after he does shoot the apple off her head, she goes, I believe, to course, I thought you were going to do that.

29:32.384 --> 29:36.204
[DEREK]: Not time for your cheeseburger, and he goes, hey, cheeseburger is always headed to cheeseburger.

29:36.224 --> 29:40.525
[DEREK]: So, the interesting thing about that, I think there is something significant behind that thing.

29:40.545 --> 29:44.326
[DEREK]: Yeah, significant thing is he never wanted to disappoint his father either.

29:45.066 --> 29:49.810
[DEREK]: even though his father was shooting the apple office head the whole time.

29:50.251 --> 29:56.316
[DEREK]: He got a cheeseburger afterward as his reward and he didn't want to say no to that because that's what his father wanted for him.

29:56.656 --> 29:57.457
[DEREK]: But he'll tell his mother.

29:58.392 --> 30:05.593
[DEREK]: Yes, yeah, he believes that his mother knows more about this situation than his father does it seems so Really like that thought that was really interesting.

30:05.633 --> 30:13.555
[JOHN]: So I mean, I think this is a really interesting look in the psychology All of it and Bringing your child up.

30:13.635 --> 30:27.718
[JOHN]: I mean, it's quite extreme, but in many respects you can see how it works You know about pushing children down certain routes to follow Sometimes it's chopping chains chopping change other times like you know

30:28.218 --> 30:48.221
[JOHN]: you know, it's relentless, I mean, I'm guessing, I say it's extreme, but I'm guessing it's like pro athletes were, or even, you know, still think that I started the involvement of the good and the other ones, and I agree, that is very extreme, but what I mean is I think conceptually, it's probably the same kind of techniques, it's just really, you know,

30:49.182 --> 31:02.516
[JOHN]: train train train train train that is and then you know fishing in school work all this kind of stuff you know like the body extent do not have that same family life as his brothers Aaron and Marcus again

31:03.685 --> 31:06.346
[JOHN]: does it breed isolation or this kind of stuff?

31:06.386 --> 31:14.828
[JOHN]: And I think it's a really interesting journey to show the journey of this, you know, baby through to a five year old, receiving his destiny.

31:15.188 --> 31:18.249
[JOHN]: I mean, I wouldn't have been ready at five years old for that.

31:18.929 --> 31:20.350
[JOHN]: And then into sort of

31:21.465 --> 31:35.699
[JOHN]: sort of, almost early teens and where he's then being like chucked out into the rough end of midway city and all of this is is really interesting, sort of, and gives a lot about, um,

31:38.039 --> 31:42.220
[JOHN]: or potentially gives a lot about John Stuart here.

31:42.280 --> 31:42.800
[JOHN]: Well, absolutely.

31:42.820 --> 31:43.480
[DEREK]: Well, it does.

31:44.120 --> 31:47.721
[DEREK]: A couple of little things that I thought were interesting about this before we move on to our next point.

31:48.782 --> 32:02.725
[DEREK]: Interestingly, when John senior says he is afraid, it's John Junior as a baby in the bed in the same room and the minute the green glow goes, John Stuart's junior cries, which I think is really interesting.

32:02.745 --> 32:06.206
[DEREK]: It's like, that's his only moment of fear that he's ever experienced as the moment

32:08.106 --> 32:11.870
[DEREK]: he did have fear, but he simply, so he started to learn it there.

32:11.890 --> 32:13.851
[DEREK]: I just thought it was an interesting little touch.

32:14.372 --> 32:22.820
[DEREK]: And the big reveal here about the birds watching all the time and birds being very important through A.S. John's life as he grew,

32:24.654 --> 32:30.779
[DEREK]: explains the manifestation of the bird and when he used the green lantern ring, that's where he said it meant nothing to him.

32:31.139 --> 32:40.387
[DEREK]: It kind of doesn't mean anything to him because it was a life from his mother, but it kind of means something absolutely massive to him because for about 10 years he believed the birds are watching him and reporting back to the guardians.

32:41.307 --> 32:55.949
[JOHN]: I like the fact that it's also depicted in his drawing, he draws a lot of birds, it just builds a nice picture of this man and where things are coming from, the birds not a fluke, it's from his childhood and

32:56.009 --> 32:59.171
[DEREK]: that the episode ends with him talking to a bird as well.

32:59.411 --> 33:01.612
[DEREK]: So there is still a connection there.

33:01.672 --> 33:03.133
[DEREK]: So there were really like that.

33:03.513 --> 33:14.059
[DEREK]: And yes, through the episode, as you mentioned, John, you're going in and out of this interview with Leanna, was a really interesting touch because you're learning that at least on the surface.

33:14.759 --> 33:31.161
[DEREK]: John is actually quite a well-adjusted person who has had fear taken away from him and has been pushed to certain extremes by his family because of the destiny that they believe is there for him at the end, but to every question that he's being asked throughout this interview he has an answer.

33:32.242 --> 34:01.389
[DEREK]: Which he seems to truly believe he still believes that he loves his family something that he couldn't try and teach to somebody else He still believes there's a difference between being programmed and how he was raised and there's a very Deep distinction in that he's not a robot He's just raised with different values and different experiences than his brothers were and this has led him to this point And he says that great line rabbit the stars every single thing I've done has led me to being across the table from you that is my destiny

34:02.529 --> 34:03.050
[DEREK]: Absolutely.

34:03.370 --> 34:13.838
[JOHN]: And I think, as I say, you know, how this cuts in, you know, with Leanna around the family life in the interview, it is just superb.

34:14.058 --> 34:23.505
[JOHN]: You know, she's asking, like, do you resent your parents for the rigors of their training of you?

34:23.665 --> 34:26.527
[JOHN]: You know, do you love your parents?

34:28.908 --> 34:42.359
[JOHN]: all these kind of really piercing questions that interchanged with seeing him have an apple-fired off his hedge, or he realizes he's missing out from,

34:50.065 --> 34:52.806
[JOHN]: Being more closely connected with his brothers.

34:52.826 --> 35:06.692
[JOHN]: Well, that's what you get the sense and she asks him You know the piercing question a little did you feel a sense of isolation and you know, do you love your parents because of this and it's like Yes, I owe them everything and she goes

35:07.892 --> 35:35.065
[JOHN]: you owe them everything how are you going to repay them with what and he's like by getting this job exactly and but she goes for what if you don't and he's like I was trained for it I mean that's pure really you know great determination but it is just this this pisser pass her back and forward between this family life and this interview were at least in part where she is exploring his relationship at probing

35:35.865 --> 35:39.107
[JOHN]: trying to unsettle him, you could ask him, or all of this.

35:39.428 --> 35:44.651
[DEREK]: But maybe, right, I've absolutely loved that he doesn't answer that question that she has to and what if you don't get the job?

35:44.671 --> 35:48.654
[DEREK]: Because there's no date, she's going to get this job, he's been preparing for it as a whole life.

35:48.854 --> 35:50.515
[DEREK]: He will get this position.

35:51.036 --> 35:54.418
[DEREK]: You know, that's how he will repay his parents because he will get it.

35:54.518 --> 35:54.878
[DEREK]: Very good.

35:55.339 --> 36:01.003
[DEREK]: And the only time she really does kind of foster him is when she starts talking about

36:08.937 --> 36:16.681
[DEREK]: and the power in point number two is a failed mission kind of source of maybe but it is a bit as military career.

36:16.701 --> 36:19.542
[DEREK]: He does go off and becomes a sniper.

36:19.782 --> 36:27.025
[DEREK]: Interestingly we see him towards the end of his career and on this final mission effectively and that's what she starts to probe a bait.

36:27.045 --> 36:28.066
[DEREK]: So we learned that

36:29.186 --> 36:31.407
[DEREK]: The mission that ends is great.

36:31.467 --> 36:46.830
[DEREK]: Yeah, we learned that he has been tasked with taking care of a terrorist, taking care of, not taking him out to dinner, so he's been given the information by someone who was a friend or the father, someone that kind of went through bootcamp with his dad.

36:46.970 --> 36:50.751
[DEREK]: He's developed this reputation effectively for always getting the job done.

36:51.331 --> 36:53.832
[DEREK]: I really like what we get in that

36:54.512 --> 37:04.556
[DEREK]: moment with John Stewart's and the general, where the general's trying to give him some, you know, some padding and some information about the targets, like I don't care, just tell me about the mission.

37:04.916 --> 37:08.417
[DEREK]: And tell me when you want to do them, tell me the details I will have it done.

37:08.857 --> 37:22.002
[DEREK]: And then John asks how many other people have been there for us, again showing his invested, investic of skills, showing that, you know, there's no way you would have this intel if other people haven't gone in to try and do this mission and failed.

37:22.602 --> 37:28.866
[DEREK]: he lowers this through the people gunning and then the general tries to explain the both the panic button and John says, I won't need a panic button.

37:29.247 --> 37:31.588
[DEREK]: I will get the job done, basically.

37:32.549 --> 37:43.796
[DEREK]: And he stays for a very, very long time watching on this property, watching on, waiting for the arrival of this Russian terrorist as they say.

37:44.116 --> 37:53.818
[JOHN]: Petrov, or the gray wolf, as you know, and I mean, yeah, absolutely, it's, it's it's a traditional, it's pure patience in a nutshell.

37:54.158 --> 37:56.679
[JOHN]: I mean, he's also injured on the parachute down.

37:56.819 --> 37:57.759
[DEREK]: Yeah, the past.

37:57.779 --> 38:08.222
[DEREK]: When he's about to do the parachute jump, you know, the guy says, oh, really, sorry, he wouldn't normally drop you in, drop you in this kind of weather, but the radar won't pick us up, and then he goes, well, then it's the perfect time to be chopped.

38:08.702 --> 38:11.405
[DEREK]: that he goes out into the store and gets injured on the way down.

38:11.445 --> 38:14.608
[DEREK]: You see him bleeding quite profusely, but he just continues on.

38:15.069 --> 38:15.890
[DEREK]: None of it phases him.

38:15.910 --> 38:17.752
[DEREK]: He will get this job done effectively.

38:18.052 --> 38:23.418
[JOHN]: Yeah, and I think, you know, it's like there's never ending stake out really.

38:25.059 --> 38:27.482
[JOHN]: It cuts back in part to the interview.

38:27.582 --> 38:29.784
[JOHN]: And this is another really interesting

38:30.665 --> 38:51.269
[JOHN]: aspect from the other because she does ask John Stuart about Sinestro who we saw right at the end of episode two and and what do you think about how Jordan because the whole shabang between how and Sinestro played out in real time on earth as well so it seems like everyone on earth knows and she's saying that.

38:51.389 --> 39:17.759
[JOHN]: So Nestry was Jordan's teacher and he still harbours deep affection for his mentor, his troubling, for the honest species, you can see it there, but she's worried about disobedience and there's this hint coming in to actually how Jordan has been disobedient by maybe going back to Sinestro in prison, keeping that link open, that affection for him even though he's

39:20.380 --> 39:23.705
[JOHN]: to the extent that he's being locked up and he's killed one of the guardians.

39:23.745 --> 39:25.848
[JOHN]: Yeah, so it's quite significant.

39:25.868 --> 39:30.314
[JOHN]: So again, she's worried about disobedience and because

39:31.440 --> 39:37.846
[JOHN]: of how John Stewart's mission ended at least officially on paper.

39:38.106 --> 39:39.187
[JOHN]: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.

39:39.227 --> 39:48.516
[JOHN]: And she has to dig for more stuff on it because he's basically left it initially at he was dishonorably discharged.

39:48.536 --> 39:48.676
[JOHN]: Yeah.

39:49.377 --> 39:55.522
[JOHN]: And that the mission failed or he failed the mission and she's like, oh,

39:56.283 --> 40:23.491
[DEREK]: so like you know it's it's only becomes a big question mark absolutely and then he said and he says the reason why he's just wanted to tell her is because he's not comfortable telling her this information you know this is suddenly a question of his juicy and his honor he's been dishonably just judged from the army but he's supposed to be keeping this thing completely secret he's not supposed to be telling anybody what actually happened on this mission and she's saying to him effectively you have to tell me or you don't get this job

40:24.523 --> 40:32.175
[DEREK]: Because I'm not going to be willing to give you this information if you're not going to be willing to share the uncomfortable details of your life with me as well.

40:32.255 --> 40:36.040
[DEREK]: So an interesting moment between exactly.

40:36.060 --> 40:36.561
[DEREK]: Exactly.

40:36.601 --> 40:38.925
[JOHN]: He's kind of like, well, it's classified.

40:39.425 --> 40:48.987
[JOHN]: and she's like, well, there'll be stuff within our job that will be classified, and I mean, that's the other element here that comes out around the disobedient side.

40:49.427 --> 40:54.449
[JOHN]: You get the sense from the honor that she's hinting quite clearly that Hal Jordan is disobedient.

40:54.489 --> 40:56.129
[JOHN]: He's a bit chaotic for her.

40:56.149 --> 40:56.249
[JOHN]: Yeah.

40:56.909 --> 41:02.991
[JOHN]: And here John Stewart is stating quite clearly, I follow orders exactly.

41:03.031 --> 41:07.952
[DEREK]: Yeah, and he's telling her, whatever, classified information you share with me will not leave the

41:09.913 --> 41:18.620
[DEREK]: But again, he had that situation where someone told him something classified, he can't tell anybody in the world what actually happened on that mission, and he has to share that information with her.

41:19.080 --> 41:21.662
[DEREK]: So again, in that moment, he is making the decision.

41:22.042 --> 41:24.805
[DEREK]: There are some things that are classified that I am not allowed to say.

41:25.285 --> 41:30.488
[DEREK]: There's other things I'm going to actually share with this alien in front of me because it gets my goal and that's my actual goal.

41:30.768 --> 41:41.673
[DEREK]: Those people did don't me and I was dishonorably discharged at the higher ups, no, what I know what I did but that would have been the absolute end of my life goal if I don't share this information with the woman across from me here.

41:41.733 --> 41:41.813
[DEREK]: So

41:42.333 --> 41:43.254
[DEREK]: It's a really interesting.

41:43.274 --> 41:44.054
[DEREK]: So what did happen?

41:44.735 --> 41:58.325
[DEREK]: On that mission, what happened was, John was there for such a long time waiting for this Russian terrorist to arrive back that a senator who was at the drunken knight saw how Jordan and just happened to casually mention to him that they know.

41:58.825 --> 42:02.950
[DEREK]: where this guy's going to be, he gave him the day and time that guy was going to be there.

42:02.970 --> 42:15.446
[DEREK]: He said, like, tomorrow morning, this guy's going to be at the location, which they probably could have given to John, so he wouldn't have been sitting at in the bushes for nine months, but they gave this to Hal Jordan and how basically ran out of the bar.

42:16.207 --> 42:21.969
[DEREK]: went over to Russia, blew up the guy's house, took the guy back and threw him into Guantanama Bay.

42:22.289 --> 42:32.332
[DEREK]: Yeah, all ending off with basically a tack of a American superhero on Russian soil, when the Americans were not supposed to be there.

42:32.893 --> 42:35.353
[DEREK]: And John Stuart takes that heat for, and he's

42:37.511 --> 42:40.394
[DEREK]: Hal Jordan and ultimately super heroes.

42:40.594 --> 42:40.794
[LIANNA]: Yes.

42:40.934 --> 42:51.165
[DEREK]: So when father like son, he job offered and not completed by John Stewart, completed by Hal Jordan and they have to take the brunt of the responsibility for it basically.

42:51.345 --> 42:51.505
[JOHN]: Yeah.

42:51.545 --> 42:52.846
[JOHN]: And yes, is that a way to read it?

42:52.866 --> 42:53.087
[JOHN]: Yeah.

42:53.407 --> 43:07.541
[JOHN]: I mean, the interesting thing here, again, is about disobedience and all that, which says we've told him he can't use his powers for terrestrial events or issues or situations and in the same way that

43:09.030 --> 43:28.462
[JOHN]: Kerry Kane said to him when he arrived in Rushville, so we have this kind of recounting here, but she also then is basically asking John Stuart, like, to what extent do you believe that Hal Jordan was responsible for both your complicated family life and being discharged from the military?

43:38.473 --> 43:40.615
[JOHN]: is quite neutral about this.

43:40.855 --> 43:41.776
[JOHN]: Yeah, Bush.

43:42.156 --> 43:49.082
[DEREK]: Well, he specifically says his job is to protect people and I respect anybody who's job is to protect people because that's how he's been brought up.

43:49.443 --> 43:53.306
[DEREK]: He's not blaming how Jordan specifically but she's absolutely right.

43:53.326 --> 44:04.656
[DEREK]: There is a read of his life as told to her that how Jordan is at fault for everything that happened to him as distance from his family while he's the type of person that he is now and where he's landed right now.

44:04.816 --> 44:32.075
[JOHN]: but I love the fact that this all comes off the back of him being back at the family home after the failed mission after him being dishonorably discharged his mom is basically asking him how long are you going to mope around the house and it's all about effing how Jordan and both of them are all effing how Jordan and I just so I just like the fact that it's all that

44:33.636 --> 44:41.478
[JOHN]: loudly out loud in the show at Household and then back in the interview, he's like, well, I respect anyone.

44:41.498 --> 44:46.840
[JOHN]: So, you know, it's just a nice little contrast and juxtaposition creative.

44:46.980 --> 44:52.822
[JOHN]: And but what we also get is that, you know, again, maybe just how slightly burned it.

44:52.902 --> 44:56.623
[JOHN]: It's a softened after having the apple shot off her head.

44:57.163 --> 44:57.703
[JOHN]: And, you know,

45:02.905 --> 45:04.246
[JOHN]: you also like doing that.

45:04.386 --> 45:10.470
[JOHN]: I can't have you using off-ball my electricity here, and she goes, but the path hasn't changed.

45:10.590 --> 45:12.171
[JOHN]: This is just a detail.

45:12.351 --> 45:14.852
[JOHN]: Until then, you have to make yourself happy.

45:15.273 --> 45:17.974
[JOHN]: So your off-e-go is to university, and we're

45:19.055 --> 45:26.277
[JOHN]: You know, it seems to be a diligent student in North that he's being asked for a special project.

45:26.697 --> 45:28.797
[JOHN]: Where he has to draw objects from memory.

45:29.337 --> 45:34.059
[JOHN]: And initially, he draws the front of the building where he's doing this test.

45:34.459 --> 45:40.280
[JOHN]: He's then asked by the guy to draw a watch, you know, or can you?

45:40.680 --> 45:42.701
[JOHN]: And he's like, yes, my dad's watch.

45:42.921 --> 45:43.461
[JOHN]: And he says, no.

45:44.688 --> 45:46.430
[JOHN]: place the ring on your fingers.

45:46.470 --> 45:56.418
[JOHN]: You hang hands out, one of the Green Lantern rings, and it is manifest your dad's watch.

45:56.939 --> 46:03.545
[JOHN]: Think about it and projects, and he does the in an instant project the

46:04.989 --> 46:28.992
[JOHN]: the watch and following this then and it explains why John Stuart is falling from a dome right at the start of the the episode because he creates almost like a little portal for John Stuart to jump in take that trusted step into the unknown and and to see what happens absolutely and yeah again you know to the point

46:29.652 --> 46:40.395
[DEREK]: where we were talking about the fact that he was able to create a bird, when using how Jordan's ring here, he's created a watch, but not just some piece of plastic.

46:40.415 --> 46:44.056
[DEREK]: He's created all of the inner workings of his father's watch.

46:44.496 --> 46:52.238
[DEREK]: It works exactly like a watch does because of his training, because of his attention to detail, because of everything that has gone into creating John Stuart.

46:53.278 --> 47:02.605
[DEREK]: Yes, he will be far better at using this ring than probably how Jordan has because it is because of this attention to detail that he's had.

47:02.705 --> 47:05.787
[DEREK]: So what I'm interesting way to pull him out of there.

47:06.347 --> 47:20.897
[DEREK]: Yeah, I wonder where the brand that had softened or whether she had almost given up at the point when he's in the house just on the idea that she's been pushing him for his entire life and he's gotten to the point where he's been dishonorably discharged from the army.

47:21.749 --> 47:24.811
[DEREK]: And I wonder is she just kind of going, well, look, you've done everything.

47:24.911 --> 47:29.635
[DEREK]: It is time for you to use your other talent because he is very talented as an artist of now.

47:30.476 --> 47:32.237
[DEREK]: Maybe we need to put this in the back burner a bit.

47:32.257 --> 47:33.698
[DEREK]: There's nothing more that we can teach you.

47:33.738 --> 47:37.581
[DEREK]: You've done everything you can to get to this point and still the world's against you.

47:37.601 --> 47:40.383
[DEREK]: So maybe time now to go and pursue another dream.

47:40.583 --> 47:45.207
[JOHN]: I think it is that, I mean, she just say the path hasn't changed.

47:45.727 --> 47:50.311
[JOHN]: I think when I meant softened, it's just the fact she says, you have to make yourself happy.

47:51.964 --> 48:04.693
[JOHN]: Yeah, but if you haven't really gotten that from her and I know it's a long time since the Apple being shot of the head But I do believe that was a slight turning point where she realized look Yes, we are still gonna train him.

48:04.713 --> 48:18.243
[JOHN]: Yeah, but it's not as such going to completely Destroy his family life or just happiness, and I think that comes out from John Stuart in Responding to Leanna.

48:18.343 --> 48:19.744
[JOHN]: Yeah, where is like

48:21.100 --> 48:23.703
[JOHN]: you know, he says he does love his family.

48:24.264 --> 48:26.367
[JOHN]: And he's quite clear with that to her.

48:26.507 --> 48:31.834
[DEREK]: So I think there's a part of it that she's kind of going maybe we can refocus this.

48:32.015 --> 48:34.658
[DEREK]: So it's not like the training has been a waste for him.

48:35.119 --> 48:37.822
[DEREK]: She's saying to him, I brought you up to have no fear.

48:38.710 --> 48:45.238
[DEREK]: don't fear the leap into the unknown that is going to art school, you know, just because you've been on this other path, this is just a slight detour.

48:45.718 --> 48:49.883
[DEREK]: Use everything that you've learned to go and challenge yourself in a different way for a while.

48:49.903 --> 48:56.190
[JOHN]: I mean, I fail to listen another way, which is putting yourself out there with your off, yes, in many of us.

48:56.290 --> 48:57.892
[DEREK]: And it turns out that potentially

48:58.713 --> 49:09.476
[DEREK]: the focus on the art that he's had alongside all the other focus that he's had has made him an even better green lantern they could have hoped because he's going to be able to manifest things that other lanterns aren't able to manifest.

49:09.597 --> 49:11.077
[DEREK]: So was it a failed mission or not?

49:12.257 --> 49:15.818
[JOHN]: No, it was the variety of lives.

49:15.838 --> 49:24.781
[DEREK]: Yeah, but I do have one specific question though about the mission as an expected answer, a bit rhetoric mostly for maybe our listeners have a perspective on this.

49:27.282 --> 49:40.946
[DEREK]: His target finally arrives at this retreat and John has him in his sight, so he hasn't been in his sights once at the front door, he has him dead to right to the back if he's able to take the shot, he probably would have taken him out.

49:41.346 --> 49:50.529
[DEREK]: He has him in the window upstairs and in the following morning when he's leaving before how Jordan arrives, he has a third potential shot to take at this guy.

49:51.353 --> 49:53.334
[DEREK]: And he doesn't take a shot at all.

49:53.454 --> 49:55.314
[DEREK]: Now, I'm not a sniper by any means.

49:55.394 --> 49:59.356
[DEREK]: And he could judge the win distance and his, all of that stuff.

49:59.376 --> 50:00.276
[DEREK]: He could make those adjustments.

50:00.296 --> 50:05.578
[DEREK]: I just thought it was quite interesting that he did have the target in the site three times after waiting such a long time.

50:05.878 --> 50:06.818
[DEREK]: He didn't take the shot.

50:07.098 --> 50:08.019
[DEREK]: How Jordan arrived.

50:08.599 --> 50:08.759
[DEREK]: And...

50:09.439 --> 50:14.083
[DEREK]: decimated the place took his target away and then he got decided to be discharged.

50:14.443 --> 50:26.813
[DEREK]: And I just wonder, is the reason why they put it on screen there that there is another possibility to this story that John didn't take the shot and he's also blaming how Jordan for what happened to him.

50:28.084 --> 50:31.387
[DEREK]: is there just a little bit of that that it's not, it's not as sealed to deal.

50:31.407 --> 50:41.497
[DEREK]: This is in his head that how Jordan absolutely ruined the situation and ended and he ended off losing his position in the army because of it.

50:42.078 --> 50:42.498
[DEREK]: I don't know.

50:42.998 --> 50:44.500
[DEREK]: There was three opportunities, that's all I've said.

50:45.321 --> 50:51.587
[JOHN]: Yeah, no, I mean, I'm guessing given how fleeting those opportunities were presented

50:54.276 --> 50:55.037
[JOHN]: and condition.

50:55.157 --> 51:01.461
[JOHN]: I guess it's just trying to indicate how difficult it is to get a kill shot.

51:01.701 --> 51:04.343
[JOHN]: That distance with wind.

51:04.703 --> 51:08.065
[JOHN]: Well, it has set it up for that.

51:09.316 --> 51:15.838
[JOHN]: it's also in the moment he has to make sure that it is correct in order to get the right moment.

51:15.878 --> 51:25.341
[JOHN]: So I'm guessing it just it's how fleeting those moments are when you're trying to kill at as a sniper at distance.

51:25.821 --> 51:28.722
[JOHN]: And what happens is it's a very precise way of doing it.

51:30.666 --> 51:36.209
[JOHN]: and you have how coming in with the sledgehammer approach which in the end became more effective.

51:36.609 --> 51:53.937
[JOHN]: But what happens is it shows American involvement on Russian soil at a time and so there is all the heat that has to be taken by the department of defense in the U.S. and the pentagon or whatever it is, the military.

51:54.557 --> 52:10.570
[JOHN]: And they can do that because thing is general says well we can do that to protect the superheroes and I think the the bars that Senators frequent and that possibly shouldn't and The old stripper bars.

52:10.750 --> 52:22.319
[JOHN]: Yeah, but someone has to take the fall that we can do so much and because they know that American Activity was happening on sovereign Russian soil pit and so that's

52:23.080 --> 52:31.046
[JOHN]: Don't do it, but don't worry, because all the higher-ups will know what a good team play you are, but you are being dishonorably discharged.

52:31.066 --> 52:31.426
[DEREK]: Exactly.

52:31.527 --> 52:37.771
[DEREK]: So he got no benefit ever, but now some higher-ups know that that's what he was doing and he's left alone.

52:37.811 --> 52:38.692
[DEREK]: He's left on his own.

52:39.052 --> 52:42.655
[DEREK]: And I'm not saying he's wrong, sorry, I didn't want to make it sound like that.

52:42.695 --> 52:46.098
[DEREK]: I just wonder why they specifically showed three opportunities.

52:46.558 --> 52:52.660
[DEREK]: And it looked like after John had waited there so long, the target was only spending one night there and then was leaving.

52:52.920 --> 52:55.461
[DEREK]: So he wasn't going to get another opportunity after that either.

52:55.822 --> 53:04.425
[DEREK]: So having waited so long, set everything up, he may have had to wait there another year or two years or five years waiting for him to think this guy to come back.

53:04.465 --> 53:09.447
[DEREK]: So I just thought it was unusual that they didn't show him trying to take a shot and missing or

53:10.087 --> 53:10.527
[DEREK]: You know what I mean?

53:10.547 --> 53:13.309
[DEREK]: He lined up the shot a few times, but didn't take any shots.

53:13.329 --> 53:15.790
[DEREK]: He didn't take at all the other guys around and everything like that.

53:15.830 --> 53:18.412
[DEREK]: So I just thought it was something worth asking the question.

53:18.432 --> 53:28.318
[DEREK]: If anybody else saw that reading now, and maybe they started on the season, they may revisit this moment that will hear how side of the story, or will hear more detail behind us.

53:28.378 --> 53:30.219
[DEREK]: I just wonder, you know, it's always a base.

53:30.799 --> 53:31.680
[DEREK]: What do they say?

53:31.720 --> 53:34.642
[DEREK]: The marriage of themselves and their opinion here.

53:34.702 --> 53:34.962
[DEREK]: And this,

53:35.582 --> 53:45.165
[DEREK]: Episode Fundamentally is John Stewart and his mother Bernadette's opinion of how their life got to this point I'll told through this interview.

53:45.205 --> 53:51.486
[DEREK]: So I'm intrigued to see if there will be any changes to that story as the season progresses.

53:51.986 --> 53:53.127
[JOHN]: It could be and

53:54.167 --> 53:56.628
[JOHN]: You mean like from the Hal Jordan's perspective?

53:56.648 --> 53:57.508
[JOHN]: Yeah, absolutely.

53:57.708 --> 54:02.089
[DEREK]: I just, again, as I said earlier on, I feel like we haven't really gotten much of Hal's perspective.

54:02.109 --> 54:03.269
[DEREK]: He's aged here.

54:03.869 --> 54:08.970
[DEREK]: We've seen a version of him from earlier on as life, who is a very different version of Hal Jordan than the J.

54:09.010 --> 54:09.650
[DEREK]: Did Hal Jordan.

54:09.670 --> 54:12.991
[DEREK]: So I wonder what we spend a bit more time with him in the future.

54:13.091 --> 54:22.693
[JOHN]: Well, I think what you get from the general on John Stuart's return to America and where he's delivering the bad news to him is that

54:24.393 --> 54:37.295
[JOHN]: You were taking so long, you were being so patient, that actually thought you were to... Yeah, it was starting to unsatle the chain of command, and they didn't know whether you were dead.

54:37.816 --> 54:42.636
[JOHN]: In trouble had been taken as a prisoner, or any of that.

54:42.676 --> 54:48.157
[JOHN]: So all of a sudden it was getting a little bit more heightened, because he wouldn't take the extraction buzzer.

54:50.978 --> 54:54.941
[JOHN]: that I put in the panic button, that's like an elderly person.

54:54.961 --> 54:59.604
[JOHN]: So the extraction button, you know, he wouldn't take any of that.

54:59.704 --> 55:10.531
[JOHN]: So because the chain of command was blind to the situation, uh, seemingly, you know, still alive, there was no reports whatsoever coming back because there was no

55:11.451 --> 55:11.932
[JOHN]: Raise it.

55:12.132 --> 55:14.534
[DEREK]: I'm in charge by that's when I told you I'd get it done.

55:14.554 --> 55:15.035
[DEREK]: It doesn't matter.

55:15.075 --> 55:17.097
[DEREK]: I'm just going to say, I'll get the job done.

55:17.137 --> 55:20.961
[DEREK]: Yeah, it's got his way of believing in himself.

55:21.041 --> 55:21.422
[DEREK]: I suppose.

55:21.482 --> 55:22.963
[DEREK]: So, it's an interesting one.

55:23.344 --> 55:26.407
[DEREK]: We have one final powering point, a powering point, number three.

55:30.754 --> 55:32.715
[DEREK]: which is the new Green Lantern.

55:33.115 --> 55:42.857
[DEREK]: I wanted to focus specifically on this final decision, the final outcome of this interview because the whole episode has been leading there has been led through this interview process.

55:42.997 --> 55:51.880
[DEREK]: And the final outcome is where Leanna effectively offers them this job, but it's the words that she uses which I think are the important things to talk about here.

55:53.201 --> 56:07.949
[DEREK]: She says to him, firstly, if you have any ill will towards Hal Jordan, and that's what we said earlier on, that John says, now he was just doing his job, I get it, that's kind of who he is, and then the offer comes, which is, would you be comfortable replacing Hal Jordan?

56:08.490 --> 56:11.312
[DEREK]: Even if he thought you were his backup,

56:12.292 --> 56:15.373
[DEREK]: is the very specific way that she said it.

56:15.413 --> 56:20.274
[DEREK]: So he's not being offered what we thought he was at the beginning of the series.

56:20.314 --> 56:31.876
[DEREK]: We thought he was someone that will take over from how Jordan when Hal Jordan dies in the future and he is being trained by Hal Jordan to take over his role and he's going to eventually learn how to fly and all that kind of stuff.

56:32.316 --> 56:39.117
[DEREK]: He's being told that he is replacing Hal Jordan and Hal Jordan will think that John Stewart is his backup.

56:40.032 --> 56:40.272
[JOHN]: Yes.

56:40.392 --> 56:40.813
[JOHN]: Exactly.

56:41.574 --> 56:50.162
[JOHN]: And but it's also not just that Hal Jordan will be on to that impression, but that John Stuart knows exactly.

56:50.182 --> 56:51.503
[JOHN]: He's on to that impression.

56:51.543 --> 56:51.743
[JOHN]: Yeah.

56:52.444 --> 56:59.350
[JOHN]: And that effectively, he is the replacement and there is a dance happening here.

57:00.331 --> 57:01.913
[JOHN]: And John Stuart's going,

57:04.615 --> 57:11.341
[JOHN]: Yes, if you get the job, then it doesn't matter if I'm comfortable because she is asking would you be comfortable with that?

57:11.401 --> 57:15.184
[JOHN]: Yes, and it says because that order doesn't matter.

57:15.544 --> 57:16.866
[JOHN]: And he gets the job.

57:17.226 --> 57:19.348
[JOHN]: As a result, he gets this job.

57:19.768 --> 57:26.233
[JOHN]: That's the telling conversation from here, because it's not to say that John Stewart has suddenly maybe

57:27.522 --> 57:28.982
[JOHN]: the gray area here.

57:29.482 --> 57:49.327
[JOHN]: Probably more, it's more that he's being used by the gardens for something and he connects in with how going back to his mentor, which Leanna finds sort of slightly disturbing, slightly unusual and the notion that he's a bit of a rogue green lantern here.

57:49.707 --> 57:51.568
[JOHN]: So it's, this all is

57:52.716 --> 58:05.028
[JOHN]: starting to cluster quite nicely, I think, around the intentions of the guardians here and I love the John response that we've mentioned that kind of conversation about that before.

58:05.088 --> 58:08.671
[DEREK]: But John does say he doesn't think there's anything wrong with it at all.

58:08.751 --> 58:14.256
[DEREK]: You can see why how would have a good relationship with the person that trained if it's his mentor.

58:14.276 --> 58:16.699
[DEREK]: He will always have some connection with the mentor, which is

58:17.419 --> 58:18.699
[DEREK]: Which is interesting as well.

58:18.780 --> 58:26.462
[DEREK]: So yeah, we'll definitely learn more about Houston Astro is and this in this version of the story as well What I really want to know now?

58:27.902 --> 58:39.305
[DEREK]: He was we hear from Leanna that he's the one that trained them anti killed a Guardian so therefore He should be punished and he should be completely out of out of all connection with how because of that.

58:39.385 --> 58:46.147
[DEREK]: So that's quite interesting We mentioned earlier on about John saying that he knew all the stuff from the news so the news is following him

58:46.147 --> 58:47.027
[DEREK]: everything that's happened here.

58:47.067 --> 58:50.529
[DEREK]: This isn't something that happened off planet and a galaxy far far away.

58:50.549 --> 58:59.154
[DEREK]: This is something that played out at least covered by the international news in John was able to see it, which is quite interesting.

58:59.854 --> 59:08.258
[DEREK]: But yeah, after she congratulates John and getting the job, he travels home to tell his expected parents that they'll never believe what happened.

59:08.799 --> 59:10.459
[DEREK]: The aliens finally came and offered them the job.

59:10.479 --> 59:11.100
[DEREK]: That's the...

59:11.640 --> 59:16.443
[DEREK]: they said he would have from when he was five years old and how started their waiting for him.

59:17.830 --> 59:21.653
[JOHN]: It's kind of like, I think as the walking ice is, I didn't steal your thunder did it.

59:21.873 --> 59:32.060
[DEREK]: Oh, like it's everything at the house during this moment where he's talking to Bernadette and John Seenure and he's going, and oh, John Seenure, so you're John Jeanneure.

59:32.080 --> 59:43.589
[DEREK]: So we'll call you Jeanneure, and his dad goes, no, no, we just call him John and how continues to call him either, I'm, I'm how Jordan Jeanneure, let's go outside and talk about, um,

59:44.209 --> 01:00:06.655
[DEREK]: talk about schedules and that kind of stuff, and then he turns back to burvet and jarling goes, I knew this guy was going to be a good kid, the minute I met you guys, because you guys are like the Midwest hostables, which is a reference to the cause to be show for those of you who may be a little too young to know that, which is effectively he's saying you're like the sitcom Black Family from the 80s that I remember to these two

01:00:07.315 --> 01:00:28.855
[DEREK]: Very well spoken, very well brought up people who've raised someone that's going to be an even better Green Lantern than then then he has turned date to be And the look and the on their eyes at the table when they've been compared to the Cosby's from the Cosby show the aches they just Want this guy out of the house as quick as possible, but very quickly what he is outside the house.

01:00:28.895 --> 01:00:31.898
[DEREK]: He reveals his true feelings to John Stuart

01:00:32.340 --> 01:00:36.521
[JOHN]: Yeah, basically I don't give a flying F what you want.

01:00:37.021 --> 01:00:42.463
[JOHN]: You probably want this effing ring, but I don't give an F. We'll train Monday.

01:00:42.823 --> 01:00:53.607
[JOHN]: I mean, effectively going, you know, if you think you're just going to suddenly replace me or I don't need backup, that's for sure, or a trainee.

01:00:53.947 --> 01:00:55.987
[JOHN]: So, but look, we'll train Monday.

01:00:56.327 --> 01:00:58.968
[JOHN]: It also, you know, it makes sense then that whole

01:01:01.676 --> 01:01:14.940
[JOHN]: There's no investment here at all, from how, but, you know, he, the guardians have said, well, this is the guy, so he has to go along with it, but there's no investment there to train him.

01:01:15.520 --> 01:01:17.640
[JOHN]: And it's certainly not going to give him the ring.

01:01:18.101 --> 01:01:21.962
[JOHN]: I think you just say, you'll have to take it from me when I'm dead.

01:01:21.982 --> 01:01:30.264
[JOHN]: It's a cold dead house because what he was trying to say right there, yeah, which again, maybe is a nice little reference then to why the ring isn't on his hands when

01:01:32.031 --> 01:01:34.792
[JOHN]: John Stuart finds dead how children.

01:01:35.353 --> 01:01:39.695
[JOHN]: So again, it's all nicely marinating for me.

01:01:39.935 --> 01:01:40.455
[DEREK]: Absolutely.

01:01:40.575 --> 01:01:53.802
[DEREK]: And just to remember, John Stuart didn't just find how Jordan dead in the cold with no ring on John Stuart found the body of how Jordan with a bullet hole from a sniper in his head.

01:01:55.398 --> 01:01:58.681
[DEREK]: frozen in Rushville, John's a sniper.

01:01:59.582 --> 01:02:02.745
[DEREK]: John has been told he will be replacing Hal Jordan.

01:02:03.806 --> 01:02:12.954
[DEREK]: John, in fact, in this episode, it's told he is replacing Hal Jordan and Hal Jordan from this point onwards needs to think that he's the back up.

01:02:13.034 --> 01:02:13.755
[DEREK]: 10 years later.

01:02:14.660 --> 01:02:22.965
[DEREK]: to John take over from Haljur in that 10 years, and then put him out of his misery, or did John wait 10 years, and then put Haljur out of his misery there.

01:02:23.606 --> 01:02:25.127
[DEREK]: You know, look, we don't know.

01:02:25.447 --> 01:02:34.332
[DEREK]: Well, that's stuff for the future, but this moment between the two of them where Hal's saying you'll get it over my dead body is very interesting.

01:02:34.352 --> 01:02:34.693
[JOHN]: Yes.

01:02:34.733 --> 01:02:41.857
[JOHN]: But I guess as well, that kind of reaction, you know, we've had a lot about how Jordan so far

01:02:43.458 --> 01:02:46.779
[JOHN]: the gut feeling that something's not right.

01:02:46.919 --> 01:03:08.623
[JOHN]: As I don't think it's necessary because John Stewart's not right, it's more that he's been used by Leanna, because actually all of this made me kind of suddenly feel, oh, is Leanna, the guardian, the other aliens that wail in that faction of aliens, talks about a guardian that's stored the man hunter on it.

01:03:10.663 --> 01:03:33.078
[JOHN]: is Leanna that alien, you know, she does make a moment about how humans having short life spans and you know, maybe this is an alien that has a much longer lifespan, like significantly longer or is a descendant or, you know, from that particular race of and guardians.

01:03:33.098 --> 01:03:35.940
[JOHN]: Well the guardians are effectively immortal they've been around for

01:03:36.860 --> 01:03:55.112
[DEREK]: millennia they've been ready forever and the the point is that there's one of them their dead after the hands of uh of uh Sinestro and um and how they're still his friend basically so uh so is this just punishment for him still having a relationship with Sinestro what why quite specifically again

01:03:55.832 --> 01:03:56.913
[DEREK]: How old knows the history?

01:03:57.053 --> 01:03:57.673
[DEREK]: A ring goes out.

01:03:57.993 --> 01:04:07.199
[DEREK]: It chooses the green lantern and that's the green lantern and when that person dies the ring goes out and chooses another green lantern here, he's being told by the Guardians.

01:04:07.760 --> 01:04:11.903
[DEREK]: We've actually chosen your replacement already before you've even died and the ring's gone out.

01:04:11.923 --> 01:04:11.983
[DEREK]: So,

01:04:12.783 --> 01:04:25.271
[DEREK]: Now, you can kind of understand why he's so angry about having today as he's still going along with it But I definitely feel there's a lot of story to tell now of Hals opinion of what's gone on over the last couple of years.

01:04:25.311 --> 01:04:35.377
[DEREK]: He was the hero for 20 years and now he's suddenly being told We've just chosen somebody else randomly like we've never done any other planet in the entire galaxy before So yeah, very interesting

01:04:37.738 --> 01:04:53.231
[DEREK]: No major notes we've talked about loads of this episode are really, really good episode, no major notes, but one thing I did want to mention just because the episode is called Ashcast, and it's spelled the same way as the group, O-U-T, a capital K, A-S-T, so the group, a cast, there are two songs in the episode.

01:04:54.172 --> 01:04:59.336
[DEREK]: At two major moments for John Stuart, one, when he's in the car with his brothers and realizing how different he is from them.

01:04:59.697 --> 01:05:03.520
[DEREK]: When they're trying to get him to wrap along with the song on the radio, that's

01:05:06.282 --> 01:05:11.227
[DEREK]: I cast and then at the end of the episode after he's being told that he won't get the ring at all.

01:05:11.607 --> 01:05:19.274
[DEREK]: That's gasoline dreams by a cast, so yeah, not only is the episode cold at cast, not only has John been made in a cast by his family.

01:05:19.374 --> 01:05:22.557
[DEREK]: They've also included two really good songs from a cast in there as well.

01:05:22.637 --> 01:05:23.478
[JOHN]: Yeah, absolutely.

01:05:24.495 --> 01:05:26.476
[DEREK]: Anything else from yourself, Johnny, any notes that you wanted to do?

01:05:26.536 --> 01:05:27.457
[JOHN]: No, nothing from me.

01:05:27.477 --> 01:05:30.619
[JOHN]: I think it exhausted most of my notes.

01:05:30.799 --> 01:05:31.380
[DEREK]: Fantastic.

01:05:31.400 --> 01:05:32.821
[DEREK]: This was a big episode.

01:05:32.841 --> 01:05:35.202
[DEREK]: I took a lot and lots of notes in this episode.

01:05:35.262 --> 01:05:35.883
[DEREK]: It's a thing for you.

01:05:35.903 --> 01:05:38.064
[DEREK]: That's probably the most notes I've ever seen you take.

01:05:38.144 --> 01:05:39.825
[DEREK]: But it was just one of those fascinating episodes.

01:05:39.845 --> 01:05:43.027
[DEREK]: I don't want to miss anything because the acting is so good.

01:05:43.047 --> 01:05:43.648
[DEREK]: There's so many...

01:05:44.668 --> 01:06:04.807
[DEREK]: excellent moments in here once again from Aaron Piers as John Stewart's book his mother who played by Jasmine Cifus Jones throughout the episode really drives the episode along with Laura Lini who's just fantastic in this role as this unusual woman who turns out to be an alien that's pretending to be an unusual woman.

01:06:04.967 --> 01:06:17.033
[DEREK]: I think that's a great moment, but Jasmine Cifus Jones just you might recognize the serenine there Cifus Jones her father was in Luke Cage many years ago, so we also know her him as well.

01:06:17.073 --> 01:06:20.614
[DEREK]: She was in Hamilton That's where she got her big star her big bracelet.

01:06:20.634 --> 01:06:24.756
[DEREK]: So she's excellent really daughter good number of people who've come from Hamilton actually.

01:06:24.856 --> 01:06:25.857
[JOHN]: Yeah, really good.

01:06:25.897 --> 01:06:26.237
[JOHN]: Excellent

01:06:26.637 --> 01:06:30.338
[JOHN]: So, musical theatre is a live and kicking everyone.

01:06:30.438 --> 01:06:33.479
[DEREK]: Absolutely, it can be a great way to enter the university.

01:06:33.499 --> 01:06:35.800
[DEREK]: I should do the movies and TV.

01:06:35.900 --> 01:06:38.140
[DEREK]: John, overall, what did you think of the episode?

01:06:38.280 --> 01:06:41.561
[JOHN]: For me, I really, really enjoyed this episode.

01:06:41.601 --> 01:06:45.382
[JOHN]: I'd give it five Tweety Apple Pies out of five.

01:06:45.422 --> 01:06:45.702
[JOHN]: Nice.

01:06:46.123 --> 01:06:47.583
[JOHN]: And I just think,

01:06:49.097 --> 01:06:55.782
[JOHN]: Again, it's just adds a nice layer of backstory and flashback onto what we've already seen.

01:06:56.002 --> 01:07:15.336
[JOHN]: It really has a lot of connection with those first two and pulls in intrigue around what the motivations of Leanna, and because to me, I came out of this really having a little bit of a shift to say, okay, yes, how Jordan is acting like a complete A-hole, but

01:07:16.220 --> 01:07:21.131
[JOHN]: It's not to say it's totally or warranted and in terms of how things have gone.

01:07:21.171 --> 01:07:25.099
[JOHN]: And I mean, you know, up front when you have John Stuart falling from the dome.

01:07:28.712 --> 01:07:51.330
[JOHN]: and getting to Laura Linnies, I have to say I do like the thing which says I'll be back and he's basically there overnight and when she comes in she's like oh you're still here but he do like the fact that you know upfront it's telegraphed where John is asking why are you interviewing for the job Green Lanterns normally are chosen by a ring like in a sense the

01:07:57.315 --> 01:08:04.397
[JOHN]: This is a standard interview, seemingly, to replace him, but it is the ring that does it.

01:08:04.497 --> 01:08:04.777
[JOHN]: Exactly.

01:08:04.977 --> 01:08:06.757
[JOHN]: And you really haven't died.

01:08:06.777 --> 01:08:07.077
[JOHN]: Yeah.

01:08:07.237 --> 01:08:10.478
[JOHN]: So this is all very unusual for how.

01:08:10.938 --> 01:08:24.482
[JOHN]: And we have the nods to Sinestro and sort of that the Anna and other Guardians find it strange that he still harbors this deep affection for his mentor to

01:08:26.182 --> 01:08:30.924
[JOHN]: And so, it all deepens this lovely mystery.

01:08:31.024 --> 01:08:35.006
[JOHN]: I love the flashback to John Stuart's family life.

01:08:35.126 --> 01:08:37.147
[JOHN]: I mean, that was a tough old gig.

01:08:37.287 --> 01:08:39.969
[JOHN]: I think Bernadette is superb.

01:08:40.189 --> 01:08:43.470
[JOHN]: As Leanna says, you are a formidable woman.

01:08:43.530 --> 01:08:46.492
[JOHN]: And that is one of the other reasons why

01:08:47.965 --> 01:09:07.210
[JOHN]: she does consider that he would be looked at for being a green lantern not just because he holds the same genetics as his dad but also because here in front of me is a form of a woman which is something to behold and she's great in this absolutely.

01:09:07.230 --> 01:09:16.693
[JOHN]: So I just love how this what is the intention of Leanna it adds a different dimension to why how is behaving

01:09:17.939 --> 01:09:20.460
[JOHN]: the way he is with John Stuart.

01:09:20.980 --> 01:09:30.525
[JOHN]: It adds layers to John Stuart's history, you know, the birds, the manifestation, all of this kind of stuff.

01:09:30.545 --> 01:09:32.846
[JOHN]: So for me, absolutely love this five

01:09:35.087 --> 01:09:49.279
[DEREK]: How's your five fantastic, um, did you notice that there was a, there was a pigeon that they go on in the, uh, in the interview room when John comes into the tent and he just looks at it and you don't know why he's looking at it at the end of the episode, basically, that he's had birds looking at them the whole time.

01:09:49.319 --> 01:09:52.782
[DEREK]: So again, when I, when I was just looking at it the second time, I was like,

01:09:53.342 --> 01:10:05.266
[DEREK]: Are the birds watching and as mom pretended that it was a lie there, because it does seem to be that Laura Lennie does know a hell of a lot about John Stewart from the interview itself.

01:10:05.406 --> 01:10:07.626
[DEREK]: She's questioning everything about him.

01:10:07.666 --> 01:10:09.647
[DEREK]: She's been watching him for a very long time.

01:10:09.707 --> 01:10:11.928
[DEREK]: So, how's she been watching on you, isn't the birds?

01:10:12.228 --> 01:10:13.568
[DEREK]: I still, I'm still not to be sure.

01:10:14.568 --> 01:10:17.369
[DEREK]: But I think it's time for us to get a quick drink.

01:10:17.549 --> 01:10:18.129
[DEREK]: Turn the local.

01:10:18.150 --> 01:10:19.470
[DEREK]: Maybe it may be a stake in a pint, John.

01:10:20.005 --> 01:10:28.107
[JOHN]: I think so, it is a time for the Rushville Redneck Barquiz, fellow quizzes, fellow lanterns.

01:10:28.747 --> 01:10:36.129
[JOHN]: It's episode 3, so of course we are on to our third question for this series of the Barquiz.

01:10:36.789 --> 01:10:45.811
[JOHN]: Question is, how long does John Stuart stake out the compound of the Grey Wolf before he's taken by How Jordan?

01:10:47.073 --> 01:10:51.295
[DEREK]: I'll let's follow that about seven times when we were talking about the start of the part of the scene, John.

01:10:51.315 --> 01:10:52.135
[DEREK]: So, glad I didn't.

01:10:52.155 --> 01:10:53.396
[JOHN]: Do you want to give the question one more time?

01:10:53.456 --> 01:10:53.876
[JOHN]: Absolutely.

01:10:54.256 --> 01:11:00.799
[JOHN]: How long does John Stuart stake out the compound of the Grey Wolf before he's taken by Hal Jordan?

01:11:01.159 --> 01:11:01.439
[JOHN]: Excellent.

01:11:01.460 --> 01:11:03.020
[DEREK]: That's the third question of a question.

01:11:03.140 --> 01:11:05.341
[DEREK]: I'll get all of the answers together on the end of the scene.

01:11:05.381 --> 01:11:15.606
[DEREK]: Season email us two feedback at tvpodcastindustries.com and you can be in the chance of getting your hands on some lanterns, goodies if you've got all the answers correct at the other than the season.

01:11:16.126 --> 01:11:19.068
[DEREK]: We have lots of feedback in from our wonderful fellow guardians.

01:11:19.389 --> 01:11:24.272
[DEREK]: At first, don't forget a little bit of feedback in on Discord from a Paolo on last week's episode.

01:11:24.512 --> 01:11:29.336
[DEREK]: He wasn't very taken on the first episode, but on last week's episode he says, okay, now we're talking.

01:11:29.596 --> 01:11:32.739
[DEREK]: The Lantern, the Uniforms, the Nestro, Man, Man Hunter.

01:11:33.059 --> 01:11:35.080
[DEREK]: I am totally unboarded for this good action.

01:11:35.361 --> 01:11:36.802
[DEREK]: Good tension from across the episode.

01:11:37.062 --> 01:11:39.143
[DEREK]: Now I can listen to your coverage, which I always enjoy.

01:11:39.464 --> 01:11:41.865
[DEREK]: 5 out of 5 pet altitudes from me.

01:11:43.146 --> 01:11:43.987
[DEREK]: Fantastic, Kyla.

01:11:44.232 --> 01:11:45.153
[JOHN]: Excellent stuff.

01:11:45.193 --> 01:11:45.934
[JOHN]: Thanks, Paolo.

01:11:46.094 --> 01:11:55.242
[JOHN]: I'd be intrigued to find out what you thought of this episode, which again, it kind of brings it direct, no point intended, back down to earth.

01:11:55.322 --> 01:12:00.946
[DEREK]: Kind of, yeah, but with, you know, the intrigue of what's what's happening in space because we have a guardian right here.

01:12:01.507 --> 01:12:03.469
[DEREK]: And the good news is, John, you won't have to wait very long.

01:12:03.829 --> 01:12:07.012
[DEREK]: We've got Paolo's feedback in right at the end of this feedback.

01:12:07.052 --> 01:12:10.795
[DEREK]: So next up, we have an email in from a coffee vodka, though.

01:12:11.175 --> 01:12:15.078
[JOHN]: Yes, coffee and vodka says, greetings fellow shop block defenders.

01:12:15.558 --> 01:12:22.383
[JOHN]: Arjun's stories are usually weighed down the list of preferred viewing experiences, even the best of them are still about the past.

01:12:22.823 --> 01:12:33.090
[JOHN]: When what we're after is the furthering of the current plot, this is where the great exiting of John's story came into play, just before any element could drag an event or

01:12:38.113 --> 01:12:53.100
[JOHN]: Perfect for those of us with music video attention spans, it thoroughly illustrated where John's attitude came from, being more or less, shared an introduced by his parents, and I loved the standout scene of the Apple being shot of Bernadette's head.

01:12:53.580 --> 01:13:00.203
[JOHN]: The lines I'm ready to shoot now, and no, not dad, you, were positively chilling.

01:13:00.803 --> 01:13:03.524
[JOHN]: As well, the lower Lini appearance was nice to see.

01:13:03.684 --> 01:13:10.127
[JOHN]: Finally, it demonstrated that Heldent have to be an active part of your life to be a major pain in the ass.

01:13:10.567 --> 01:13:17.390
[JOHN]: For 1.5 Watchman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Men Without Fear, Out of 5, Peace and Take Care.

01:13:17.751 --> 01:13:18.611
[JOHN]: Coffee and vodka.

01:13:20.169 --> 01:13:21.269
[DEREK]: extra stuff, coffee vodka.

01:13:21.289 --> 01:13:26.912
[DEREK]: You see, we actually could have just called our three power ring points after those there.

01:13:26.932 --> 01:13:29.933
[DEREK]: We could have been watchmen, gardens, the galaxy and member that feared.

01:13:30.473 --> 01:13:31.053
[JOHN]: Absolutely.

01:13:31.413 --> 01:13:31.573
[JOHN]: Yeah.

01:13:32.394 --> 01:13:32.894
[JOHN]: Good job.

01:13:32.914 --> 01:13:34.834
[DEREK]: Good job, vodka.

01:13:34.874 --> 01:13:35.054
[DEREK]: Yeah.

01:13:35.075 --> 01:13:35.955
[DEREK]: No, you're absolutely right.

01:13:35.995 --> 01:13:40.657
[DEREK]: Yeah, the editing, the way the the episode was was put together was so interesting.

01:13:40.677 --> 01:13:45.698
[DEREK]: Wasn't that, you know, there's points where Laura Lennie is asking these questions of John Stewart and

01:13:47.499 --> 01:14:05.513
[DEREK]: kind of answering in a very specific way, and then you see the flashback to what actually happened, and then you see bits of his mission, you're not sure exactly what he's saying to her, it's not like that, he's not doing voiceover, but it's really good to kind of build everything about his character in these multiple timelines.

01:14:06.033 --> 01:14:08.274
[JOHN]: it's gorgeously non-linear in that sense.

01:14:08.294 --> 01:14:22.897
[JOHN]: Like you say, you know, I was talking like specifically about how it cut scene with Leanna's questioning of John Stewart around, you know, his relationship with his family what do you think of how Jordan?

01:14:23.017 --> 01:14:29.179
[JOHN]: And then you have the mission being cut into all of that, which just sometimes it's like

01:14:30.915 --> 01:14:48.682
[JOHN]: just cuts through nicely in a non-linear way and changes it up and then you suddenly, you do you get jumps from his age five or baby to age five and then all of a sudden he's kind of just coming up to adolescence.

01:14:50.022 --> 01:14:51.723
[JOHN]: Is that bit older, you know?

01:14:51.823 --> 01:14:56.645
[JOHN]: So I kind of like that non-linear aspect here brought in by the editing.

01:14:56.965 --> 01:14:57.946
[DEREK]: Yeah, really, really good.

01:14:58.406 --> 01:14:59.186
[DEREK]: Thanks, Kaffeevaka.

01:14:59.747 --> 01:15:02.148
[DEREK]: Over on Facebook to our Facebook group at Facebook.com.

01:15:02.168 --> 01:15:04.609
[DEREK]: slash groups slash TV podcast industries.

01:15:04.649 --> 01:15:07.970
[DEREK]: First up over there, Derek Whittfield says, powerful episode.

01:15:08.691 --> 01:15:11.152
[DEREK]: Absolutely, right, Derek really, really powerful, isn't it?

01:15:11.792 --> 01:15:19.294
[DEREK]: Alan Thomas says, seems like Damon Lindeloff has spent in the 2020s making D.C. superhero shows on HBO that he hopes will impress tiny E.C.

01:15:19.334 --> 01:15:19.614
[DEREK]: coats.

01:15:20.054 --> 01:15:26.635
[DEREK]: Don't get me wrong, I think it's great to do a black superhero show, but I wish the writers wouldn't lay it on so thick, it's cringey and try hard.

01:15:27.115 --> 01:15:31.836
[DEREK]: My objection is not about the nature of what the show is preaching, and I want to be clear that I'm certainly not a red hat type.

01:15:31.896 --> 01:15:35.217
[DEREK]: I just don't want to show to be preachy about anything left, right or center.

01:15:35.797 --> 01:15:37.218
[DEREK]: Interesting, a pigeon island.

01:15:37.758 --> 01:15:42.001
[DEREK]: Yeah, you know, I don't want to over-stase how involved in a landlough as in the show.

01:15:42.061 --> 01:15:49.125
[DEREK]: You know, he got into a huge amount of trouble when he was doing watchmen because people kept giving him all the credit for the rice's room.

01:15:49.145 --> 01:15:54.849
[DEREK]: You know, there were many, many people involved in the rising of watchmen, which I think is the other show you're referencing there.

01:15:55.189 --> 01:15:57.070
[DEREK]: At the time, he decodes as an excellent rice here.

01:15:57.090 --> 01:16:00.933
[DEREK]: So I think he probably is out there to impress him because everybody wants to impress a great rice here, right?

01:16:01.813 --> 01:16:19.492
[DEREK]: But in this case, yes, the writer of the episode is an African American woman who has a son and she says herself the reason why she wanted to give the superhero art and story here is because she wants to give hope to her own children that they can grow up in this world and reach for the stars like John Stuart does.

01:16:20.313 --> 01:16:24.676
[DEREK]: It's a really interesting perspective to put in here, and again, it's not the only perspective this show has.

01:16:24.836 --> 01:16:38.223
[DEREK]: You know, we had a character one episode ago, two episodes ago saying that he doesn't like foreigners and he will stand his grand and shoot them if they come onto his land, basically he was talking about aliens, but that is one of the characters in the show has said that.

01:16:38.243 --> 01:16:43.526
[DEREK]: So if you have a show that can say that, I think you can have a show that has a black superhero with this origin story.

01:16:43.666 --> 01:16:46.348
[DEREK]: I think they're all entitled, I don't think there was anything

01:16:46.688 --> 01:16:50.350
[DEREK]: particularly preachy about it and it is the opinion of the character burn it at here.

01:16:50.410 --> 01:17:04.938
[DEREK]: So don't think that I agree with you that a show can't have an opinion about what they say or a character can't have a perspective that they come from and that being vitally opposed to other characters in the show makes for interesting drama, I think.

01:17:06.423 --> 01:17:11.888
[JOHN]: Yeah, I mean, I think ultimately, you know, it's giving the perspective of John Stuart here.

01:17:12.008 --> 01:17:19.556
[JOHN]: It's his episode, his flashback episodes and his family, their black and they live in America.

01:17:19.596 --> 01:17:23.019
[JOHN]: Then how it's trials and tribulations like other places as well.

01:17:23.039 --> 01:17:23.279
[DEREK]: Yeah.

01:17:23.720 --> 01:17:23.820
[JOHN]: And

01:17:25.081 --> 01:17:30.483
[JOHN]: in in terms of race relations or how and how people feel identify and so on.

01:17:30.503 --> 01:17:33.225
[JOHN]: So I I didn't feel it came across as preachy.

01:17:33.285 --> 01:17:44.029
[JOHN]: I think it was just a matter of fact the way Bernardette saw this and how she took it on board and that's ultimately what was the driving force.

01:17:44.049 --> 01:17:45.830
[JOHN]: I mean, I think I mentioned it, you know,

01:17:46.750 --> 01:18:03.662
[JOHN]: you just get this sense from Bernadette of how relentless she is driving this training program for her son because she believes there's something there for him, absolutely, in essence that you know, to sort of lift themselves out.

01:18:03.682 --> 01:18:04.602
[JOHN]: I mean, you know, there is

01:18:06.641 --> 01:18:21.691
[JOHN]: um you know that really interesting moment and I found it you know quite telling because it gives the psyche of Bernardette you know um that her and her husband have to break down every state stereotype and and show up and more because

01:18:22.451 --> 01:18:28.214
[JOHN]: we're black in a white world and I can't raise kids and say you can't better yourselves.

01:18:28.754 --> 01:18:32.396
[JOHN]: So actually it's just saying there's an extra hurdle.

01:18:32.816 --> 01:18:46.123
[JOHN]: But I didn't find it preachy and I like these perspectives on life because it is the variety is the spice of life for me and I think you know sometimes you don't realize that you're

01:18:47.283 --> 01:18:49.384
[DEREK]: part of that on the world sometimes.

01:18:49.644 --> 01:18:51.465
[DEREK]: Well, absolutely, yeah, yeah, absolutely.

01:18:51.545 --> 01:18:57.089
[JOHN]: But I am, yeah, I mean, I think it was just a great episode for you.

01:18:57.369 --> 01:18:57.869
[DEREK]: Really, really good.

01:18:58.469 --> 01:18:59.510
[DEREK]: Thanks, Alan, for your feedback.

01:18:59.610 --> 01:19:00.410
[DEREK]: Yeah, thank you so much.

01:19:00.431 --> 01:19:02.452
[DEREK]: Hopefully you enjoy the rest of the season.

01:19:02.572 --> 01:19:03.352
[DEREK]: Absolutely.

01:19:03.552 --> 01:19:06.194
[JOHN]: Also on Facebook, Harvey Locust had his thoughts.

01:19:06.734 --> 01:19:10.837
[JOHN]: Yeah, he says I loved the William Tellbit, was John's idea.

01:19:10.957 --> 01:19:14.479
[JOHN]: I knew it wouldn't happen, but I really wanted John to miss the apple.

01:19:14.739 --> 01:19:19.362
[JOHN]: The really WTF moment for me was why make the Guardians tall.

01:19:19.862 --> 01:19:23.564
[JOHN]: Other than that, it was a great look into John's past.

01:19:23.765 --> 01:19:24.885
[JOHN]: Yeah, absolutely.

01:19:25.706 --> 01:19:30.509
[JOHN]: And I'm with you on the William Tellbit being John Jr's idea.

01:19:30.529 --> 01:19:33.451
[JOHN]: I eat and again, I like the

01:19:34.612 --> 01:19:38.036
[JOHN]: Shifting the William Tell idea of it should be John that shoots

01:19:38.818 --> 01:19:43.620
[JOHN]: the apple off is dad's head and then John turning that back against his mom.

01:19:43.660 --> 01:19:43.860
[JOHN]: Yeah.

01:19:44.081 --> 01:19:46.742
[JOHN]: And it's just nice moment here.

01:19:46.922 --> 01:20:02.449
[JOHN]: How do I, I mean, for, you know, the use of a gun in a suburban area because I do think if I live next door, and there was that much gunfire coming from a house, I would be like, what is going on next door?

01:20:02.549 --> 01:20:03.410
[DEREK]: Yeah, absolutely.

01:20:03.450 --> 01:20:06.131
[DEREK]: Especially the metatimes that set up the dogs that I've heard.

01:20:06.231 --> 01:20:07.712
[DEREK]: That's bad enough for me to be honest.

01:20:08.072 --> 01:20:22.300
[JOHN]: It was even just the fact that because you have Leanna give Bernadette a huge diamonds, which the police came around for because she tried to cash it in to find out what it was and I'm surprised they went there for all the gun shots.

01:20:22.320 --> 01:20:23.021
[DEREK]: Well, exactly.

01:20:23.901 --> 01:20:24.381
[DEREK]: Exactly.

01:20:24.922 --> 01:20:29.804
[DEREK]: And just Harvey mentioned there that he thought the John might miss or want to

01:20:34.832 --> 01:20:44.205
[DEREK]: When we're watching the episode, you realize that John Cena has had a conversation with John earlier on the season, but we haven't heard anything about his mother.

01:20:44.225 --> 01:20:47.250
[DEREK]: We didn't see his mother in that flashback scene at the stars.

01:20:47.270 --> 01:20:48.892
[DEREK]: We didn't hear her in the background on the phone.

01:20:50.054 --> 01:20:51.596
[DEREK]: When John was talking to his dad,

01:20:51.996 --> 01:20:57.458
[DEREK]: and then when they switch it up and John saying, well, I want to shoot the apple off your head.

01:20:57.758 --> 01:21:05.381
[DEREK]: Yeah, absolutely, that moment I was going, oh, oh, I guess this is the reason that we haven't heard from his mother, right?

01:21:05.641 --> 01:21:06.802
[JOHN]: Yeah, absolutely.

01:21:07.142 --> 01:21:14.145
[DEREK]: And as for the mention of the Guardians, yeah, very different from the comic book Guardians, the Guardians in the comic, um,

01:21:14.685 --> 01:21:32.048
[DEREK]: The kind of remind me of Dungeon Master from the Dungeon Dragons cartoons, they were big like three and a half feet tall, yeah, but yeah, or kind of known like like tiny, but yeah, she grows taller when she's standing in front again, she could be on a chair, maybe her head was just quite big, maybe that's all it is.

01:21:32.668 --> 01:21:35.669
[DEREK]: But yeah, it's we haven't seen them yet.

01:21:35.749 --> 01:21:50.533
[DEREK]: So maybe they'll look a bit different what we see the front of them But it was quite surprised that it seemed to look really sleek and beautiful with the lovely color and Shaved head and we didn't see the front and as John said she looks fine from the back But yeah, maybe it's a very different one.

01:21:50.553 --> 01:21:53.614
[DEREK]: We see when we see the front Thanks, Harvey.

01:21:53.734 --> 01:21:54.074
[JOHN]: Absolutely.

01:21:54.094 --> 01:21:54.874
[JOHN]: Thanks, every great stuff.

01:21:55.514 --> 01:21:58.575
[JOHN]: Also over on Discord Richard Blaise says

01:21:59.983 --> 01:22:05.005
[JOHN]: I continue to be blown away by this series, acting and story are on point throughout.

01:22:05.385 --> 01:22:08.527
[JOHN]: Great to see the upbringing of John and what his training was about.

01:22:08.547 --> 01:22:11.468
[JOHN]: Easily one of the best shows of the year.

01:22:12.288 --> 01:22:14.329
[JOHN]: Great stuff, Richard.

01:22:14.369 --> 01:22:15.810
[JOHN]: Yeah, I mean, I would agree with that.

01:22:15.830 --> 01:22:19.371
[JOHN]: I think I've scored five out of five for all the three episodes.

01:22:19.391 --> 01:22:22.553
[JOHN]: I'm really enjoying this telling of.

01:22:23.493 --> 01:22:27.536
[JOHN]: the green lanterns in a way that is accessible for me.

01:22:27.676 --> 01:22:36.303
[JOHN]: So, yeah, this has been a really good series, but I find this kind of project.

01:22:36.503 --> 01:22:44.990
[JOHN]: I mean, whether it's an HBO thing, I mean, you know, again, not to overstate Damon Lindlofts, but it's just the name, but I just think this is a really nice

01:22:53.416 --> 01:22:55.038
[JOHN]: trying to bring the lanterns back.

01:22:55.118 --> 01:22:59.903
[JOHN]: I mean, you know, could have been the usual, like pure sci-fi types.

01:22:59.923 --> 01:23:01.786
[DEREK]: Yeah, we'll be telling them, Joe.

01:23:03.382 --> 01:23:04.783
[DEREK]: Okay, we will.

01:23:05.223 --> 01:23:11.925
[DEREK]: John made the commitment last week that he thought I've been lying about the Green Lantern movie and how bad it was.

01:23:12.445 --> 01:23:14.526
[DEREK]: We tried to watch a twice this week.

01:23:14.646 --> 01:23:25.730
[DEREK]: One was the extended version which is about 25 minutes longer than the original version that we definitely saw when it came out and John was asleep within the first two minutes of that one and then we tried to

01:23:26.490 --> 01:23:30.313
[DEREK]: short and ten person and jobbers is leave about 15 minutes into that one.

01:23:30.353 --> 01:23:35.477
[DEREK]: So we may eventually go back and watch the Ryan Reynolds one and it was an interesting short hand.

01:23:35.517 --> 01:23:41.161
[DEREK]: I'll say that one of the things I will say it gets you very quickly into the university.

01:23:41.181 --> 01:23:43.723
[DEREK]: Yeah, I would say some of the characters that are talked about here.

01:23:44.164 --> 01:23:46.666
[JOHN]: The opening is quite good.

01:23:46.686 --> 01:23:53.150
[JOHN]: It's like a lot of stuff is crammed into that ending and then unfortunately it's back on earth and it's like

01:23:54.375 --> 01:23:55.055
[JOHN]: Oh, god.

01:23:55.376 --> 01:24:04.740
[DEREK]: It's just not a good film because this whole story has taken place in Earth and it shows you can also tell the story on Earth if you've got good writers behind this, but no, it's not great.

01:24:04.840 --> 01:24:09.842
[DEREK]: We will hopefully watch it again in the future, but I'm probably not going to try again before the end of the season.

01:24:10.142 --> 01:24:13.504
[DEREK]: But it was interesting to have a couple of seconds just to kind of talk about it.

01:24:13.524 --> 01:24:22.108
[DEREK]: They have the old school almost 90s comic book movie where they go, right, here's all the things that happen in the comic books and a voiceover of three minutes, so it's a really good.

01:24:22.128 --> 01:24:22.228
[DEREK]: Yeah.

01:24:22.408 --> 01:24:25.810
[DEREK]: a little YouTube video if you want to get caught up on the, absolutely.

01:24:26.490 --> 01:24:34.634
[DEREK]: That maybe watch the first three minutes of the movie and that'll give you some ideas of some of the concepts that are a bit out there right now through, yeah, because I'm into lanterns.

01:24:35.034 --> 01:24:43.519
[JOHN]: Yeah, weirdly, the whole garden's thing and the planet and the parasite, all that was the most believable thing in the movie.

01:24:44.199 --> 01:24:46.900
[JOHN]: And nothing on earth was believable.

01:24:47.141 --> 01:24:47.641
[JOHN]: Oh, there you go.

01:24:52.283 --> 01:24:53.524
[DEREK]: But I think there's a reason for that.

01:24:54.064 --> 01:24:55.625
[DEREK]: But thank you so much Richard for your thoughts.

01:24:55.645 --> 01:25:19.557
[JOHN]: Yeah, thanks Richard Joe Herb says this was a wild episode really Reframed the scene at the start of the series between John's father and this episode young John was reluctant to shoot the apple Off his father's head But he seemed eager to take a shot at his mom Well, I think he was just making the point like put yourself in danger

01:25:21.638 --> 01:25:23.240
[JOHN]: rather than putting dad there.

01:25:23.420 --> 01:25:25.603
[JOHN]: Well, certainly after you've lied, I guess.

01:25:25.703 --> 01:25:27.625
[DEREK]: But again, we did talk about very well.

01:25:27.645 --> 01:25:30.568
[DEREK]: I think it's, it's weird both on the same page, mom.

01:25:31.169 --> 01:25:32.330
[DEREK]: You need to be more involved.

01:25:33.131 --> 01:25:34.533
[DEREK]: Maybe you maybe use that.

01:25:34.593 --> 01:25:36.515
[DEREK]: I'll give them a little bit of credit for it.

01:25:36.595 --> 01:25:37.556
[DEREK]: Thanks so much, Joe.

01:25:37.576 --> 01:25:38.658
[DEREK]: Yeah, thanks, Joe.

01:25:38.998 --> 01:25:44.880
[DEREK]: Paul Tedchi Lee just joined us over on Discord and had some thoughts so far on the series of the lanterns.

01:25:44.960 --> 01:25:49.741
[DEREK]: He asks, are you watching the behind the scenes bits that are after the credits and the next episode previews?

01:25:50.001 --> 01:25:51.702
[DEREK]: Are you listening to the official podcast?

01:25:51.942 --> 01:26:02.305
[DEREK]: There's so much there that explains lore for those of us who didn't read Green Lantern comics or have only encountered them in passing into the DC properties and specific depths of three both the screenwriter and director of African American.

01:26:02.665 --> 01:26:05.868
[DEREK]: and we're getting an African-American centric origin story for John Stewart.

01:26:06.308 --> 01:26:09.211
[DEREK]: Also, did not clock Jasmine see for Jones as John's mother.

01:26:09.851 --> 01:26:16.977
[DEREK]: I've only seen her on Broadway in Hamilton, and that was a decade ago, Kudos to all the actors, especially the various kids playing younger John Stewart.

01:26:17.658 --> 01:26:18.158
[DEREK]: Thanks, Paul.

01:26:18.218 --> 01:26:18.879
[DEREK]: Great to hear from you.

01:26:18.999 --> 01:26:19.439
[DEREK]: I agree.

01:26:19.479 --> 01:26:20.419
[DEREK]: You'd find us over on Disney.

01:26:20.439 --> 01:26:21.340
[DEREK]: Yeah, absolutely.

01:26:21.840 --> 01:26:24.421
[JOHN]: And I think you pull something out there really well.

01:26:24.481 --> 01:26:29.784
[JOHN]: Yeah, all those kids playing the younger versions of John Stewart and his brothers.

01:26:29.804 --> 01:26:29.904
[JOHN]: Yeah.

01:26:30.384 --> 01:26:31.945
[JOHN]: And they're really top notch.

01:26:32.005 --> 01:26:35.206
[JOHN]: I mean, there's some really good stuff that goes on there.

01:26:35.406 --> 01:26:35.567
[JOHN]: Yeah.

01:26:35.967 --> 01:26:41.609
[JOHN]: And certainly I think from Marcus in the car when John is trying to

01:26:42.950 --> 01:27:07.417
[JOHN]: to rap and he's kind of being egged on by Marcus and Aaron and he's like you rap like a white kid call Henry but he's delivery all the way very very very good like a hungry hungry yeah exactly very good for you have it the kids who play John Stuart specifically as well like there's three of them I think throughout the time lines that all three different actors who play John Stuart are all

01:27:08.097 --> 01:27:11.381
[DEREK]: Delivering things that, you know, kids would probably find pretty unusual.

01:27:11.441 --> 01:27:11.982
[DEREK]: Yeah, mom.

01:27:12.002 --> 01:27:21.212
[DEREK]: I want to shoot the apple off her hair Really odd data to have in work is not or just stand over there by the wall And we'll have this apple explode over your five or six times.

01:27:21.232 --> 01:27:24.296
[DEREK]: You just need to get the right shots for a six or seven year old.

01:27:24.336 --> 01:27:24.556
[DEREK]: Yeah

01:27:25.657 --> 01:27:27.139
[DEREK]: Yeah, good good stuff.

01:27:27.760 --> 01:27:34.367
[DEREK]: Thanks Paul for that and just just to say no, we're not watching any of the behind the scenes stuff It doesn't come on HBO in the UK.

01:27:34.387 --> 01:27:46.260
[DEREK]: We don't get them behind the scenes stuff or the next episode previews the not on the episodes that are released over here You have to go to YouTube and watch those those bits and we're not watching them because we want to watch along each week

01:27:47.601 --> 01:28:00.350
[DEREK]: I know the official podcast specifically focuses on each episode, and they do that with all the HBO shows, like I said, the dragon and all the other shows that we watch on HBO, but I don't watch them before we record our podcast.

01:28:00.450 --> 01:28:07.936
[DEREK]: I do want to do listen to them afterwards, usually there's some really good interesting chats with the people behind the show, the actors and the directors and writers.

01:28:08.516 --> 01:28:08.897
[DEREK]: as well.

01:28:08.957 --> 01:28:13.280
[DEREK]: So I did see just that that's short one since you mentioned a pull.

01:28:13.600 --> 01:28:20.285
[DEREK]: I did see the short one with the with the writer of the episode where she said about her being a mother to a young child.

01:28:20.645 --> 01:28:30.012
[DEREK]: And she put all of that into her writing of the episode and particularly remember that I wanted to deliver that kind of as her message to her kids, which I thought was really interesting.

01:28:30.612 --> 01:28:31.633
[JOHN]: Yeah, no, absolutely.

01:28:32.134 --> 01:28:34.656
[JOHN]: But thanks so much Paul for the feedback.

01:28:34.696 --> 01:28:36.759
[JOHN]: Really good to get your thoughts.

01:28:37.259 --> 01:28:39.301
[JOHN]: And finally on Discord.

01:28:39.341 --> 01:28:44.247
[JOHN]: Yes, Paolo got in touch as well on his thoughts for episode three.

01:28:44.287 --> 01:28:45.968
[JOHN]: So my wish has come true.

01:28:46.249 --> 01:28:47.250
[JOHN]: Just in time as well.

01:28:47.270 --> 01:28:49.332
[DEREK]: I think it was two minutes before we started recording.

01:28:49.652 --> 01:28:51.493
[JOHN]: And Great Stuff, thanks Paolo.

01:28:51.993 --> 01:28:56.635
[JOHN]: Paolo says another top-notch episode, excellent origin story for John.

01:28:56.995 --> 01:28:58.116
[JOHN]: The acting was brilliant.

01:28:58.416 --> 01:29:01.277
[JOHN]: Laura Lynney was a great surprise as a guardian.

01:29:01.538 --> 01:29:07.520
[JOHN]: She could read the phone book and I still watch her 5 out of 5 black throated magpie jays.

01:29:08.541 --> 01:29:09.601
[JOHN]: Great Stuff, Paolo.

01:29:09.841 --> 01:29:12.222
[JOHN]: I am totally with you on Laura Lynney.

01:29:12.823 --> 01:29:12.923
[JOHN]: And

01:29:13.683 --> 01:29:26.567
[JOHN]: and I didn't say on the podcast for some strange reason, maybe because I just know it myself, but you're absolutely right and I'd be there with you listening to her read the phone book.

01:29:26.847 --> 01:29:34.170
[JOHN]: And for me, Laura Lynney has just been someone that weirdly without knowing it has just crept upon me.

01:29:34.670 --> 01:30:00.616
[JOHN]: And I think the moment where the penny dropped for me was when we were watching Osark and I just kind of went back and started looking at what all her previous stuff and I'm like, I really like this actor and so so much and so knowing she was on here, I was like, I can't wait to see her and give her portrayal of whatever she is, you know, as a guardian.

01:30:02.296 --> 01:30:07.041
[JOHN]: Yeah, Laurelini is top notch, and I just love her delivery.

01:30:07.061 --> 01:30:09.363
[JOHN]: I just love the presence that she has.

01:30:09.403 --> 01:30:10.524
[JOHN]: So I'm totally with you.

01:30:11.145 --> 01:30:14.508
[JOHN]: And yeah, again, the acting was brilliant.

01:30:14.789 --> 01:30:21.736
[JOHN]: I really hope that she's in this even more and more layers.

01:30:22.878 --> 01:30:33.056
[DEREK]: like again you know to mention Chris Monday that that's where he comes from he's he was the the show winner for for Ozark so that's where he got the winner from and she was so amazing in that show

01:30:34.058 --> 01:30:40.923
[DEREK]: I can't believe the show got as long as it did, you know, the storyline as that show, it should have ended after a bit three or four episodes.

01:30:41.263 --> 01:30:53.012
[DEREK]: And the acting there, particularly from those main three with Jess Bateman and Julia Garner and, of course, Laura Lenny, they just were able to bring out something interesting every single episode.

01:30:53.072 --> 01:30:55.794
[DEREK]: It was such a stunning show to watch some so-lad.

01:30:56.354 --> 01:30:58.355
[DEREK]: She's hopped on over to the project here.

01:30:58.596 --> 01:30:59.716
[DEREK]: Absolutely, absolutely.

01:31:02.058 --> 01:31:06.982
