Episode Synopsis:

In the 1920s, private investigator Ben Reilly once operated as the vigilante "the Spider" but retired after his fiancée, Ruby Williams, died.

In 1933, Ben and another PI, Donegal, are hired to find criminal Jimmy Addison. When Addison reveals he can set himself on fire and threatens the PI, Donegal shoots and kills him.

Later Ben Reilly is hired to investigate nightclub singer Cat Hardy, for infidelity by a man named Carmedy claiming to be her husband. Tracking her to the Redcliff hotel, Ben uses his webbing to discreetly stop Cat's supposed lover from assaulting her. While studying the photos he took, Ben and his secretary, Janet, discover that Cat's companion is Mayor Alfred Morris. Unsure about the reasons for the case, Ben decides to drop the case.

Another bombshell hits Reilly when he and Donegal learn that the man who hired them to investigate Addison, a man called Winston, is the right-hand man for crime boss Silvermane, whose mansion was burned down by Addison in an attempt to kill him.

After learning the police recovered Addison's body, Donegal wants to further shakedown Silvermane for a thousand dollars for the information on Addison. Reilly advises him against it as he heads to the Alcove nightclub to try to make some money out of his photos and blackmail Cat.

Elsewhere, knowing that Addison is dead Silvermane tortures and kills Donegal to get information on Addison for free, while Cat sends her bodyguard Flint Marko, a man able to turn his body into sand, after Ben.

Ben decides to abandon the blackmail after learning of Marko’s condition. But the next day, Cat arrives at his office and hires him to investigate the sand man’s disappearance.

Spider-Noir Episode 1 "Step Into My Office"

00:00.151 --> 00:07.155
[DEREK]: This is the Defenders on TV podcast industries were back in the Spider-Verse with Spider-Noir Episode 1 "Step Into My Office".

00:07.896 --> 00:12.719
[BEN REILLY]: Ruby wants to tell me that with great power comes great responsibility.

00:14.279 --> 00:17.121
[BEN REILLY]: Well, she was the greatest responsibility I ever had.

00:18.962 --> 00:19.783
[BEN REILLY]: And I failed her.

00:22.084 --> 00:23.545
[BEN REILLY]: A spider failed her.

00:26.983 --> 00:30.200
[BEN REILLY]: After that, I didn't want the power or the responsibility.

00:56.403 --> 00:59.406
[DEREK]: Welcome back fellow defenders to TV podcast industries.

00:59.446 --> 01:16.441
[DEREK]: We are kicking off our Spider-Noir coverage with our chat all about Spider-Noir Episode 1 "Step Into My Office" I am one of your host Derek

01:16.581 --> 01:17.121
[JOHN]: Absolutely and I'm your other host John.

01:17.181 --> 01:19.142
[JOHN]: I'm I'm thinking of the Gramlins there.

01:19.562 --> 01:30.365
[DEREK]: Um, I don't think anybody will get that reference even people that know that Gramlins won't get that little tiny moment of the jazz dressed Gremlin going, oh, that dude Well, he's like the P.I.

01:30.425 --> 01:31.685
[JOHN]: because he's got the hat up.

01:31.725 --> 01:32.305
[JOHN]: Yes, absolutely.

01:32.325 --> 01:36.046
[JOHN]: It's like Then there's the the kind of the singer

01:36.306 --> 01:54.728
[JOHN]: Yeah, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well

01:55.268 --> 01:56.089
[JOHN]: Nicholas Cage?

01:56.189 --> 02:05.258
[JOHN]: Yes, for the 1930s to be a little more precise, and while talking about another Kritter, I guess, in terms of spiders.

02:06.359 --> 02:09.001
[JOHN]: But so, yeah, really pleased.

02:09.122 --> 02:09.942
[JOHN]: This has come along.

02:10.803 --> 02:31.623
[JOHN]: not out of nowhere as such but at least it's been getting some really good reviews you know we weren't entirely sure whether we'd be covering it but I think once we saw just how well it was done it's completely in the Marvel Defenders world of our podcast so we absolutely had to sort

02:35.567 --> 02:42.097
[JOHN]: and follow this closely along the streets of New York or Dublin or podcasts.

02:42.117 --> 02:42.737
[DEREK]: Well, exactly.

02:42.838 --> 02:43.218
[DEREK]: Exactly.

02:43.499 --> 02:50.589
[DEREK]: Yeah, we had chats about whether we were going to cover us while we were discussing Daredevil and then the partnership was coming up and we had to talk about the partnership because it was

02:50.949 --> 02:59.955
[DEREK]: apparently going to be connected to Daredevil, then with the disappointment of the Punisher, and we decided to check out the first episode of Spiderman Aware, and went, hang on a second, this is way better.

03:00.255 --> 03:04.377
[DEREK]: So let's talk about some Marvel that we really like absolutely at least Spider-Man.

03:04.878 --> 03:15.084
[DEREK]: The reason why we're covering Punisher was because we covered Daredevil and Punisher is going to be in Spider-Man, at least we have something in the Spider-Verse, that's genuinely good fun that we wanted to watch and want to talk about.

03:15.104 --> 03:16.064
[DEREK]: So I know we're a little

03:20.887 --> 03:36.930
[DEREK]: Which was one of those reasons that we went and maybe we can't cover this because it's all coming out in one day or maybe they've just dropped us on Prime video And all in one day But it turned out that it wasn't for any reason other than it's really good and everybody wants to watch it So it's got a great cast as well.

03:37.050 --> 03:49.392
[JOHN]: And you know it's got Nicholas Cage whom you know Let's be honest Can blow hot and cold, but certainly he's blown hotter for me More than being chilly as shall we say

03:49.672 --> 03:52.073
[JOHN]: And I think this is a good hot-knit cage.

03:52.133 --> 03:55.694
[JOHN]: I like his tempo and tone in this so far.

03:56.615 --> 04:00.736
[JOHN]: And of course, the great Irish man, Brendan Gleason as well.

04:01.037 --> 04:01.517
[JOHN]: The man.

04:01.557 --> 04:03.458
[JOHN]: Yeah, don't be coming at me, which are good.

04:04.238 --> 04:04.958
[JOHN]: Really good.

04:04.978 --> 04:07.399
[JOHN]: A really good little portrayal of that kind of...

04:09.560 --> 04:11.461
[JOHN]: gangster in New York.

04:11.921 --> 04:16.042
[JOHN]: So really enjoying his take-on silver main.

04:16.202 --> 04:18.463
[DEREK]: Brennan Placement is one of our best actors.

04:18.503 --> 04:21.384
[DEREK]: If you haven't seen in Bruges, I will recommend it once again.

04:21.444 --> 04:23.145
[DEREK]: Go see Colin Farrell who was in the penguin.

04:23.465 --> 04:27.446
[DEREK]: I think I'm Brennan Placement doing a top-class performance.

04:27.466 --> 04:30.647
[DEREK]: The two of them together are absolutely brilliant and what we're going to find as well.

04:30.827 --> 04:33.568
[DEREK]: Three great actors doing three great performances in the next

04:33.708 --> 04:35.150
[JOHN]: Absolutely, really good.

04:35.390 --> 04:48.026
[JOHN]: And then weirdly recognizing the actor who plays Winston as Lucas has who was in one of my beloved films, which is Mars attacks as the young kid actually in that.

04:48.166 --> 04:51.190
[JOHN]: And then, lastly, he was in inception as well.

04:51.830 --> 04:59.537
[JOHN]: and he's kind of taken off the table in a section quite quickly from the helicopter, but yeah, I really like Lucas Hass.

04:59.737 --> 05:05.463
[JOHN]: I've always kind of taken note of him and he's made because I absolutely adore Miles attacks.

05:05.603 --> 05:08.285
[DEREK]: I think he was asking him later for his first performance and with this.

05:09.086 --> 05:10.327
[DEREK]: Yes, ours and forward, Jack.

05:10.367 --> 05:10.828
[DEREK]: Exactly.

05:10.848 --> 05:11.749
[DEREK]: This is for a big one.

05:12.069 --> 05:20.417
[DEREK]: And interestingly, another actor who's arrived here, he may recognize Carri Christopher, who plays Frankie, the kind of street-earchen.

05:20.477 --> 05:21.678
[DEREK]: He was in weapons last year.

05:21.698 --> 05:26.022
[DEREK]: Yes, one of the central kids and was the central kid in weapons last year.

05:26.122 --> 05:29.205
[DEREK]: And really good funny performance in the background here, I think.

05:29.385 --> 05:30.286
[JOHN]: Yeah, absolutely.

05:30.726 --> 05:42.412
[JOHN]: I don't know whether it's just to do with the clothes that he's wearing off the time, but it's like he's a miniature adult and it's so bizarre to think that he's what probably about 12.

05:42.692 --> 05:44.573
[JOHN]: I think it's something like that.

05:45.633 --> 05:47.574
[JOHN]: But he kind of looks like an eight-year-old

05:48.735 --> 05:49.675
[JOHN]: is actually an adult.

05:49.775 --> 05:51.596
[DEREK]: Yeah, he's so weird.

05:52.116 --> 06:01.960
[DEREK]: Yeah, he's playing that kind of our full dodger all of her twists kind of slow, you know, you think he's really innocent and then he's picking your pocket as he goes by, which is the only thing.

06:01.980 --> 06:04.461
[DEREK]: Yeah, it's somewhat some great other cast members in here.

06:04.481 --> 06:09.343
[DEREK]: I'm sure we'll talk about them all as we as we go on to show some brand new people to us, Karen Rodriguez playing Janus.

06:09.883 --> 06:17.329
[DEREK]: is really good for Legion Lee playing Cat-Hardy is an excellent foil for necklace cage in the show.

06:17.349 --> 06:18.129
[DEREK]: It should be a great fun.

06:18.389 --> 06:20.791
[DEREK]: And Jack Houston still likes to meet Place Flint Marco in the show.

06:21.391 --> 06:33.080
[DEREK]: Here, Jack Houston has done loads and loads of movies and TV shows over the past, but the reason why you might recognize him is that he's the nephew of Angelic Houston and Danny Houston who are two great actors.

06:33.260 --> 06:36.062
[DEREK]: So you'll recognize a little bit of their face in his face.

06:36.242 --> 06:39.165
[DEREK]: Yeah, I didn't really, probably the moustache in the end.

06:39.205 --> 06:42.549
[DEREK]: I pretty, Angelica Houston does keep her moustache on his neck.

06:42.569 --> 06:42.729
[DEREK]: Yeah.

06:43.169 --> 06:44.571
[DEREK]: Oh, his sandwich complexion.

06:44.691 --> 06:46.272
[JOHN]: It might be his sandwich plan.

06:46.393 --> 06:46.633
[JOHN]: Yes.

06:46.873 --> 06:53.400
[JOHN]: But with that, and before we get into our spoiler-filled review, fellow defenders, just a reminder how you can get in contact.

06:54.080 --> 07:08.106

[DEREK]: So whatever way you want to send them in at you send them in.

08:04.343 --> 08:06.724
[DEREK]: But just mark them because all episodes came out at the same time.

08:06.764 --> 08:10.226
[DEREK]: Just mark them if you're doing a review of the full season or your thoughts on the full season.

08:10.246 --> 08:11.586
[DEREK]: We'll keep those to the end as well.

08:11.926 --> 08:17.609
[DEREK]: We are not doing a pub quiz for Spiderman or because Hi, it's prohibition, so there would no pubs back this.

08:17.649 --> 08:21.150
[JOHN]: We're not doing a sasperala quiz.

08:22.090 --> 08:24.992
[DEREK]: I know everybody's drinking quite liberally in this show here Bullshit.

08:25.012 --> 08:27.453
[DEREK]: That prohibition wasn't place, so prohibition pub quiz.

08:28.713 --> 08:29.814
[DEREK]: But we're not doing one this time.

08:30.235 --> 08:30.895
[DEREK]: Yeah, exactly.

08:30.995 --> 08:31.236
[DEREK]: Really?

08:31.276 --> 08:32.917
[DEREK]: Because there's two others out there.

08:33.658 --> 08:36.921
[DEREK]: Pop quiz for the boys final season, which is still up at the moment.

08:37.281 --> 08:39.423
[DEREK]: And the pop quiz for a dead over born again season two.

08:39.463 --> 08:40.924
[DEREK]: Both of them still up at the moment.

08:41.124 --> 08:45.108
[DEREK]: She still have time to sell it in your thoughts and answers.

08:45.228 --> 08:45.869
[DEREK]: Four of those.

08:46.229 --> 08:46.950
[DEREK]: Those two.

08:47.590 --> 08:48.451
[JOHN]: Yes indeed.

08:48.911 --> 08:51.053
[JOHN]: But let us get into all spoiler fills.

08:51.474 --> 08:52.815
[JOHN]: Discussion of.

08:54.964 --> 09:00.386
[JOHN]: Spies in war, episode one, step into my office, Derek, who gave us what we went and how.

09:00.626 --> 09:12.511
[DEREK]: Well, the showrunner for this show is Oran Iziel, he worked with Lord of Miller on 22 Jump Streas and then delivered the clever little paradox and the story for the 2021 Mortal Combat, the sequel of which just came out in the cinema this year as well.

09:13.071 --> 09:20.414
[DEREK]: Yeah, but he was, he's been very busy working on it on Spies in a war, so I didn't, I don't think he could contribute it to the second movie in that in that series.

09:20.894 --> 09:32.217
[DEREK]: The executive producer of the show are Harry Bradbury, or in Ozeil, Steve Lightful from the Punisher and Hannibal, at Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who, of course, did the Spider-Verse movies and he passed out at Edita Seud and Dan Sheer.

09:32.737 --> 09:37.458
[DEREK]: This episode was written by the show, or in Ozeil, and the episode was directed by Harry Bradbury.

09:37.478 --> 09:39.439
[DEREK]: And he did the first two episodes of the show.

09:39.519 --> 09:43.980
[DEREK]: He started out at the BBC and the UK directing shows like this life after that.

09:44.360 --> 09:48.263
[DEREK]: and also directed both seasons of Phoebe Waller Bridges' Fleabag.

09:48.483 --> 09:49.363
[DEREK]: Oh, sexy priests.

09:49.483 --> 09:54.607
[DEREK]: Yes, exactly, but apart from the pilot, where he didn't direct the initial pilot for that show.

09:54.627 --> 09:56.228
[DEREK]: He directed every other episode of the show, though.

09:56.328 --> 09:56.928
[DEREK]: Interesting.

09:56.948 --> 10:00.690
[DEREK]: So, very, very cool, the really good show for that.

10:00.730 --> 10:01.711
[DEREK]: Fantastic, directed there.

10:02.171 --> 10:09.356
[DEREK]: Recently, though, he's been working on a no-la-homes, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavalry, did the first dreading of the first two movies.

10:09.856 --> 10:10.777
[DEREK]: and that series as well.

10:11.077 --> 10:14.299
[DEREK]: I don't know whether he's directed the third one, which is coming out this summer.

10:14.799 --> 10:16.820
[DEREK]: I didn't see that, but he did direct the first two anyway.

10:18.241 --> 10:18.621
[JOHN]: Excellent.

10:18.641 --> 10:19.922
[JOHN]: I think I've only seen the first one.

10:20.162 --> 10:22.464
[DEREK]: Yeah, I think I'm the same.

10:22.484 --> 10:23.504
[JOHN]: Which I really enjoyed.

10:24.445 --> 10:31.029
[JOHN]: So I'll have to get into the old second movie that of an earlier home, because I do quite like Sherlock Holmes in the end.

10:31.069 --> 10:31.589
[JOHN]: Well, actually.

10:31.649 --> 10:34.511
[JOHN]: And expanded you versus we were saying that.

10:35.311 --> 10:36.352
[JOHN]: And we share a lot first.

10:36.372 --> 10:41.334
[DEREK]: The stuff like Chris says, but it is kind of odd movies to put out in the middle of the summer time.

10:41.374 --> 10:44.375
[DEREK]: They've seen more dirty and grimy like a winter ones.

10:44.395 --> 10:46.236
[DEREK]: We need to watch them over the winter period maybe.

10:46.256 --> 10:46.536
[DEREK]: Yes.

10:47.116 --> 10:47.677
[DEREK]: Yes.

10:47.777 --> 10:54.339
[DEREK]: I just want to call out for this episode, the director of Photography for the series is Darren Tiernan, who's an Irish cinematographer.

10:54.439 --> 10:58.881
[DEREK]: He directed two seasons of Perry Mason and also the Penguin for HBO, which we covered here.

10:58.921 --> 11:00.142
[DEREK]: He's the cinematographer on last.

11:00.903 --> 11:04.786
[DEREK]: and director photography for Stratcha Picard, Westworld, and American Gods.

11:04.826 --> 11:09.050
[DEREK]: So loads of shows we've loved, he's been behind the camera, and the set of four.

11:09.390 --> 11:22.642
[DEREK]: The real reason I'm calling out, which we'll talk about, I'm sure, as we get into our points, is because the show has the choice to watch it in black and white, and in color, it was his job to set up the look of the show for that photography.

11:22.662 --> 11:26.506
[DEREK]: There's a fantastic interview between the show winner,

11:27.486 --> 11:30.508
[DEREK]: or an OZL and down turn about how they set up the show.

11:30.528 --> 11:33.710
[DEREK]: They were contracted by prime video to do the show in black and white.

11:34.190 --> 11:37.933
[DEREK]: That was the agreement going in and then the decision was made to do it also in color.

11:38.793 --> 11:41.175
[DEREK]: And suddenly it was a big ask.

11:41.215 --> 11:46.758
[DEREK]: They were filming every single scene and making sure that it could work in both color and black and white.

11:47.598 --> 11:52.762
[DEREK]: So where you have a director photography coming in and going, well these colors would look amazing in black and white.

11:52.782 --> 11:53.202
[DEREK]: You have these

11:53.682 --> 12:02.889
[DEREK]: bright, cute colored walls over here and then suddenly the the color camera comes out and they go, oh, that really will not look good those colors flashing differently.

12:02.909 --> 12:05.692
[JOHN]: You really got to get that contrast, haven't you?

12:05.892 --> 12:12.017
[JOHN]: I mean, yeah, you can get graze, but it's even in this first episode where you see Flint Marco

12:14.066 --> 12:31.310
[JOHN]: following Ben Riley down one of the alleyways and Ben is in black, but Flintmarko is in this bright white tookseed it and even in color and you're just thinking, yeah, you're not very conspicuous really that are eye-fland in your white tookseed.

12:31.870 --> 12:35.952
[JOHN]: but that's the contrast required for black and white.

12:35.972 --> 12:37.492
[DEREK]: So yeah, that's really interesting.

12:38.092 --> 12:47.035
[DEREK]: Weirdly, isn't there a moment where he asks the kid someone following a kind of white suit fallen down the street and wiggly under the lights of the of the bar that he's passing by.

12:47.055 --> 12:48.476
[DEREK]: It looks like he's in a yellow suit.

12:48.876 --> 12:55.278
[DEREK]: But the reason why I mentioned this because I know loads of people are saying they're only going to watch the show on black and white and when we watch it initially,

12:55.758 --> 12:57.139
[DEREK]: I was going, yeah, that's the way to watch it.

12:57.319 --> 12:59.000
[DEREK]: It feels really good in black and white.

12:59.020 --> 13:00.361
[DEREK]: The contrast is fantastic.

13:00.381 --> 13:01.502
[DEREK]: The scenes are set up like that.

13:01.922 --> 13:06.725
[DEREK]: Now having watched a twice in both black and white and in color, there's merits to both.

13:07.045 --> 13:07.586
[JOHN]: Oh, definitely.

13:07.606 --> 13:08.566
[DEREK]: That does such a good job.

13:08.606 --> 13:14.710
[DEREK]: And I would tell you right now, one of the characters Robbie Robertson do not miss his outfit in black and white.

13:14.950 --> 13:19.413
[DEREK]: He looks like he's in a gray suit and in color that orange suit is found.

13:19.573 --> 13:45.372
[DEREK]: Yeah, absolutely, no, that was a nice little reveal when we watched it in color for sure and there's even a scene The thing with with Cat-Hardy and one of the costumes that she has on where everybody's got everybody's telling you that the costume looks amazing And black and white you're going yeah, probably does in color You know that they're they're they're style is completely off The effort that she's wearing looks awful So and that's on purpose, so you would miss that if you're watching black and white, but anyway, John

13:46.193 --> 13:52.034
[DEREK]: Tell us what we did get, with your synopsis for a Spider-Noir episode 1, step into my office.

13:52.795 --> 13:53.055
[JOHN]: Sure.

13:53.515 --> 14:02.777
[JOHN]: In the 1920s, private investigator Ben Riley once operated as the vigilante the spider, but retired after his fiance Ruby Williams died.

14:03.577 --> 14:06.358
[JOHN]: In 1933, Ben and another P.I.

14:06.698 --> 14:10.139
[JOHN]: Donagle are hired to find a criminal Jimmy Madison.

14:10.619 --> 14:13.339
[JOHN]: When Addison reveals he can set himself on fire and threatens

14:16.560 --> 14:24.904
[JOHN]: Lacer Ben Riley is hired to investigate nightclubsinger Kat Hardy for infidelity by a man named comedy claiming to be a husband.

14:25.484 --> 14:40.230
[JOHN]: Tracking her to the red cliff hotel, Ben uses his webbing to discreetly stop Kat's supposed lover from a salt and cut while studying the photos he took Ben and his secretary Janet to score that the Kat's companion is Matt Alfred Morris.

14:40.750 --> 14:44.012
[JOHN]: I'm sure about the reasons for the case Ben decides to drop it.

14:44.772 --> 14:58.456
[JOHN]: Another bombshell hits Riley when he and Donagle learn that the man who hired them to investigate Addison, a man called Winston, is the right hand man for crime boss Silvermean, whose mansion was burned down by Addison in attempt to kill him.

14:59.096 --> 15:07.018
[JOHN]: After learning the police recovered Addison's body, Donagle wants to further shake down Silvermean for $1,000 for the information on Addison.

15:07.578 --> 15:15.241
[JOHN]: Riley advises him against this, as he heads to the alcove nightclub to try and make some money out of his photos and blackmail cat Hardy.

15:15.942 --> 15:23.645
[JOHN]: Elsewhere, knowing that Aderson is dead, silver vein tortures and kills Donagle to get information on Aderson for free.

15:24.065 --> 15:29.808
[JOHN]: While cat sends her body guard Flint Marco, a man able to turn his body into sand after Ben.

15:30.508 --> 15:40.682
[JOHN]: Ben decides to abandon the blackmail after learning of Marko's condition, but the next day, Castle Rives at his office, and hires him to investigate the Sandman's disappearance.

15:42.590 --> 16:04.564
[JOHN]: Don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don

16:10.514 --> 16:12.316
[JOHN]: But everyone's saying it's donagall.

16:12.576 --> 16:12.716
[JOHN]: Yeah.

16:13.016 --> 16:16.299
[JOHN]: And so yeah, it's really interesting, but it's kind of a nice touch.

16:16.379 --> 16:22.885
[JOHN]: I reckon around sort of that migration from Ireland into New York.

16:23.446 --> 16:29.311
[JOHN]: And through Ellis Island, just because he probably says, I'm from Donagall.

16:29.451 --> 16:30.912
[JOHN]: I'm so they call him Donagall.

16:30.952 --> 16:33.254
[DEREK]: Yeah, he probably said I'm Pat from Donagall.

16:33.334 --> 16:34.996
[DEREK]: And they went, his name is Pat Donagall.

16:36.116 --> 16:45.940
[DEREK]: And I think, you know, it did just to make the commentary, it is definitely in there with the mispronunciation and referencing the immigration of Irish people to the US.

16:46.340 --> 16:57.645
[DEREK]: And you know that because you have someone like Brendan Gleason, who is an Irish actor, you've got Nicholas Cage, who has a lot of connections to our own, and you do have the director of photography down here in an all Irish people involved in the show, so they know

16:58.165 --> 17:02.146
[DEREK]: if someone was prepared to get it correctly on the show, they would be corrected to write.

17:02.306 --> 17:07.207
[DEREK]: So it's been pronounced that way for a specific reason, but it just doesn't roll off the tongue.

17:07.387 --> 17:09.467
[DEREK]: No, it doesn't work.

17:09.567 --> 17:13.408
[DEREK]: But John, will we get into our points of note for the episode?

17:13.428 --> 17:16.828
[DEREK]: This time, because it's in the spider verse, we got our web shots, right?

17:17.289 --> 17:19.529
[JOHN]: Yep, let's get into our web shot number one.

17:22.389 --> 17:23.550
[JOHN]: That's quite satisfying, isn't it?

17:23.770 --> 17:24.530
[DEREK]: It is, actually.

17:26.307 --> 17:26.747
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:26.767 --> 17:27.168
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:27.268 --> 17:28.028
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:28.108 --> 17:29.009
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:29.029 --> 17:29.289
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:29.309 --> 17:29.609
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:29.629 --> 17:29.909
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:29.949 --> 17:30.490
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:30.550 --> 17:31.290
[JOHN]: I like that.

17:31.310 --> 17:32.011
[JOHN]: I like that.

17:32.031 --> 17:33.151
[JOHN]: I like that.

17:33.171 --> 17:33.532
[JOHN]: I like that.

17:33.572 --> 17:34.672
[JOHN]: I like that.

17:34.692 --> 17:35.093
[JOHN]: I like that.

17:35.113 --> 17:35.473
[JOHN]: I like that.

17:35.573 --> 17:35.993
[JOHN]: I like that.

17:36.033 --> 17:36.433
[JOHN]: I like that.

17:36.474 --> 17:38.135
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:38.255 --> 17:39.255
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:39.275 --> 17:39.636
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:39.656 --> 17:39.976
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:39.996 --> 17:40.256
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:40.276 --> 17:40.656
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:41.136 --> 17:41.617
[DEREK]: I like that.

17:50.263 --> 18:03.141
[DEREK]: But just a kind of a mention of the fact that they do give you the choice to go black and white or color But the black and white styles are definitely the old company of Rebellgarb movies the third man stuff like that from the from the 40s and 50s

18:04.863 --> 18:20.553
[JOHN]: Yeah, absolutely, the detective noir tales, classic tales that have, you know, the private investigator and certainly a hard drinking one and we certainly see, you know, a good amount of drink being and

18:22.234 --> 18:45.617
[DEREK]: drunk after whether it's at the office or in the club when there's prohibitions so yeah it's it's really got a lot of those nice little film noir tropes well absolutely you know they looked up the top tropes John that's why these are listed the way they are on here in the top tropes of a film noir are a hard drinking detective check even gets his coffee cup

18:46.497 --> 18:48.378
[DEREK]: I reached up a bit with a whiskey in it.

18:48.958 --> 18:57.123
[DEREK]: They have the fem fatale who I would presume is cat hearty here Right to have the moral ambiguity so who's who's positive who's negative who's right who's wrong?

18:57.143 --> 18:59.004
[DEREK]: Who's in the side of good who's in the side of bad?

18:59.284 --> 19:02.906
[DEREK]: You know everybody ached for themselves Crime and portrayal of course.

19:02.926 --> 19:04.787
[DEREK]: There's lots of crime in this lots of portrayal.

19:05.207 --> 19:07.368
[DEREK]: I don't really know who's who's in the right and who's in the wrong

19:08.208 --> 19:17.311
[DEREK]: the haunted by the past, which is the opening scene really for the show, and then of course the rotten city, so even comments on the fact that in New York, you can't trust anybody, right?

19:17.331 --> 19:17.991
[DEREK]: Absolutely.

19:18.071 --> 19:21.052
[DEREK]: And a rabbit, it's like, Hugh frame Roger Rabbit.

19:21.373 --> 19:23.013
[DEREK]: I don't think there was a rabbit in there.

19:23.113 --> 19:24.154
[DEREK]: Okay, the actual one.

19:24.174 --> 19:26.314
[JOHN]: It sounds like Hugh frame Roger Rabbit.

19:26.694 --> 19:27.755
[JOHN]: Also a great film.

19:27.775 --> 19:28.375
[JOHN]: Yeah, exactly.

19:28.975 --> 19:32.598
[DEREK]: And we're all very colorful film noir, but yes, I'll sing Sissy.

19:32.858 --> 19:32.978
[JOHN]: Yeah.

19:33.278 --> 19:39.903
[JOHN]: And so yeah, loving these tropes, have quite a fondness for the film noir tropes to be honest.

19:40.184 --> 19:40.384
[DEREK]: Yeah.

19:40.644 --> 19:41.345
[JOHN]: And for sure.

19:41.965 --> 19:42.786
[DEREK]: It's kind of nice, isn't it?

19:42.826 --> 19:46.869
[DEREK]: Because so many times it's like a take on film noir, a type of film noir.

19:46.889 --> 19:55.355
[DEREK]: You know, you mentioned Sissy there, which was harkening back to it, but was very brutal, and very violent, and definitely of its Quentin Tarantino.

19:56.916 --> 19:59.078
[DEREK]: Robert Rodriguez kind of era of movies.

19:59.098 --> 20:19.050
[DEREK]: It was really brutal out of course based on the Frank Miller book, which are very brutal But I take on film and where I think you could actually sit this back in those days right alongside the other film Or it's more I would say in keeping with the film noir, but I think film noir

20:20.872 --> 20:23.433
[JOHN]: is just is really good in itself.

20:23.493 --> 20:28.976
[JOHN]: I think since Sissy, the sort of changing it up, you could argue Jessica Jones as well.

20:29.076 --> 20:29.236
[JOHN]: Yeah.

20:29.456 --> 20:34.478
[JOHN]: And I'm in terms of that opening sequence and the type of music that you get there.

20:34.518 --> 20:37.980
[JOHN]: And certainly it's a hard drinking femme fatale.

20:39.241 --> 20:53.569
[JOHN]: It has moral ambiguity, it is haunted by the past within the Rotten City, and there's a lot of chrome, but that's Jessica Jones, so yeah, really good to get the old Phil Noir back in the Marvel universe.

20:53.629 --> 20:57.972
[DEREK]: Wouldn't it be cool with Ben Riley and Jessica Jones met up at some point to the future, that'd be cool.

20:58.480 --> 21:07.185
[JOHN]: Yeah, or maybe you just call someone JJ, maybe just because I doubt I doubt Sony will be able to use Jessica Jones.

21:07.545 --> 21:09.566
[DEREK]: But who knows there's a multiverse out there, John.

21:09.627 --> 21:12.468
[DEREK]: There's a Spider-Man and the MCU do cross over.

21:12.488 --> 21:14.289
[DEREK]: Yeah, definitely.

21:14.910 --> 21:16.911
[DEREK]: That is our first web shot though.

21:17.291 --> 21:18.852
[DEREK]: Let's move on to our second web shot, John.

21:21.173 --> 21:24.475
[DEREK]: Yes, at best as a burnout, then fade away.

21:24.655 --> 21:29.057
[JOHN]: Yes, so we mentioned, really recalled, not fade away, that kind of thing.

21:29.137 --> 21:36.780
[DEREK]: So we kind of, well, we mentioned the things that are very similar to film noir, the big thing that is very different is of course that there are superpowers in this world.

21:36.820 --> 21:37.480
[DEREK]: Yes.

21:37.560 --> 21:40.942
[DEREK]: So we know of the spider, we saw him in the opening scene.

21:40.962 --> 21:47.645
[DEREK]: We know that's Ben Riley here in this world, but we do have another super parrot individual that appears very quickly in the show.

21:47.805 --> 21:50.989
[JOHN]: Yes, I like this reveal with James Adelson.

21:51.089 --> 22:00.041
[JOHN]: I like that we see him lighting up his hands, not in the most appropriate places, but again, I think standard oil.

22:00.521 --> 22:03.124
[JOHN]: I think that's hard back to one of the big...

22:04.446 --> 22:15.194
[JOHN]: American monopolies of its time, which ultimately got stripped of that monopoly, so I think you got like Chevron and all that kind of split and standard all split out of it.

22:15.214 --> 22:18.977
[JOHN]: So again, a little sort of nod to that sort of end.

22:21.457 --> 22:39.514
[JOHN]: monopoly era as well was Rockefeller wasn't it was a standard oil yeah well that was yeah it was Rockefeller and I think then you had the president come in basically split these companies up because they were effectively monopolizing and the markets oh like they're going to do with the tech friend

22:39.974 --> 22:57.929
[JOHN]: I guess so, something akin to that, but it's interesting you get that here with James Aderson sort of setting fire into himself effectively and threatening Donughal who has him cornered and a gun point to that in because of the case that he's been given.

22:58.590 --> 22:58.710
[JOHN]: And

23:00.371 --> 23:08.337
[JOHN]: Burst into flames, is walking towards Donnergall and he's been paid to track him down and find him.

23:08.577 --> 23:16.623
[JOHN]: He has found him, but he shoots Addison because he hasn't seen anything like this before and is afraid for his own life.

23:16.663 --> 23:22.147
[DEREK]: But here's like some aliens just arrived, which now he's just shooting him constantly.

23:22.347 --> 23:25.550
[JOHN]: So it's really good because we have here as well.

23:26.250 --> 23:32.355
[JOHN]: and Ben Riley has also been asked to track and find James Aderson.

23:32.435 --> 23:47.547
[JOHN]: I like that he's kind of done the hard grunt of tracking to this club, asked the lady next to him, do I have a match here and she goes, I think we do but as he comes out of the club and actually Aderson knows that he's being followed by him.

23:48.388 --> 23:54.255
[JOHN]: but Ben Riley gets knocked down by Donagle and that's how they ultimately meet here.

23:54.575 --> 23:58.180
[JOHN]: But I like the Spidey Tingle that Ben gets here.

23:58.520 --> 23:59.982
[JOHN]: And it's very pronounced.

24:00.523 --> 24:04.407
[JOHN]: And a lot of the sort of more recent movies and so on, it's kind of seeing

24:05.228 --> 24:08.951
[JOHN]: hurt the hers rise on the back of their neck or on their arm.

24:09.011 --> 24:09.611
[JOHN]: I just bumped him.

24:09.751 --> 24:10.912
[JOHN]: Or goose bumps.

24:11.192 --> 24:14.315
[JOHN]: And this feels much more kind of physical.

24:14.495 --> 24:14.715
[JOHN]: Yes.

24:15.015 --> 24:16.676
[JOHN]: And for Ben Riley.

24:16.716 --> 24:20.319
[DEREK]: But I think plays it off as a migraine a couple of times.

24:20.339 --> 24:20.499
[DEREK]: Yeah.

24:20.579 --> 24:26.223
[JOHN]: I quite like this different approach to the Spidey Tingle to be honest.

24:26.424 --> 24:27.204
[DEREK]: Yeah, definitely.

24:27.544 --> 24:28.045
[DEREK]: Definitely.

24:28.185 --> 24:30.026
[DEREK]: I also love the Pidder Padder of the Dialogue.

24:30.046 --> 24:30.787
[DEREK]: You know, we can mention it.

24:31.367 --> 24:32.708
[DEREK]: at any point really in the episode.

24:32.748 --> 24:44.376
[DEREK]: It's so well written that moment when he shows the photograph to the lady beside him and she goes, you got to bingo when when when he identifies Addison and then she goes, hey, you're married.

24:44.396 --> 24:48.639
[DEREK]: I think he's a good looking guy and he goes, now I'm questioning your eyesight, love it.

24:48.799 --> 24:53.140
[DEREK]: Yeah, exactly, really good at pitter powder, but we had everybody in the show.

24:53.761 --> 25:03.264
[DEREK]: But yeah, it's an interesting one, it just wants to point it out as well that the tingle that Ben gets, he gets when he's standing over out of his body in the morgue when Robby's with him.

25:03.464 --> 25:06.625
[DEREK]: And that's a really weird moment, there's no explanation for it for me.

25:07.945 --> 25:12.527
[DEREK]: All the other stuff that he's when he gets the tingle in the show is usually warning him that someone's about to attack.

25:13.147 --> 25:24.662
[DEREK]: or that something's going to happen to them in the future, but he's standing over the body of Addison, who he knows, had these torch powers, had these fire powers, and he's already dead.

25:24.743 --> 25:27.907
[DEREK]: So I was wondering why he was getting at that point in the morgue.

25:28.327 --> 25:30.329
[JOHN]: I am, but he gets it before as well.

25:30.409 --> 25:36.754
[JOHN]: So I think that's to do with the fact that they are also superpowers, like himself.

25:37.054 --> 25:44.259
[JOHN]: I don't know whether he connects the dots, necessarily with flint Marco, but he has it in the presence of flint markers in the alcove.

25:44.640 --> 25:55.328
[JOHN]: So I thought the spuditing was always leading him down the path of identifying them all the superpowers and individuals as well as danger.

25:55.628 --> 25:58.549
[JOHN]: Yeah, so that I thought that was kind of kind of interesting.

25:58.809 --> 25:58.949
[JOHN]: Yeah.

25:58.989 --> 26:03.951
[JOHN]: And so that's why I feel it went off in the mug as well.

26:04.011 --> 26:14.915
[DEREK]: Yeah, I just thought it was unusual that it was over the the body and the mower I'm understood why it was happening when he was when everybody was alive or when he was under threat And but just just maybe just when making note of it for later that was all

26:15.015 --> 26:25.963
[JOHN]: Yeah, or it's, you know, at the end of the day, it's maybe just the sense of danger because what he does find out in the morgue is that Aderson has been identified.

26:26.583 --> 26:35.710
[JOHN]: And so, like he says, I need to find a domingo because they're both trying to shape down the same person who has effectively

26:37.431 --> 26:40.092
[JOHN]: given them the case to track Aderson down.

26:40.432 --> 26:49.917
[JOHN]: And so, you know, and I quite like this ever increasing amounts, but we see that we hear that Ben Riley was offered thirsty by Winston.

26:50.577 --> 26:52.298
[JOHN]: Donegal was offered 50.

26:52.798 --> 26:58.641
[JOHN]: Then Ben Riley's going, well, if they need any information, I'm just going to say they'll need to give me 200.

26:58.661 --> 27:00.822
[JOHN]: And that's what he says to Winston later on.

27:01.142 --> 27:01.963
[JOHN]: And because both

27:04.998 --> 27:31.783
[JOHN]: dongle wants to do an even bigger shake down of Winston and ultimately and silver main by saying, well, I'm going to ask for a thousand and which doesn't end up that would be a lot, doesn't end up too good for Dongle, but I do like and as you say, just these two PIs being asked to investigate here, spreading the backs like

27:33.103 --> 27:34.244
[DEREK]: Well, exactly.

27:34.464 --> 27:39.168
[DEREK]: And also a really cool cool first other power to see in this world here.

27:39.188 --> 27:57.064
[DEREK]: Seeing the kind of new first human torch, just what I call it, because the human torch, the one that we know most well as bows is the one that's in the fantastic four, but before him there was an android in the Marvel Universe who was in the invaders and the defenders at the original group back in the World War II.

27:57.164 --> 27:57.264
[DEREK]: So

27:57.764 --> 28:09.974
[DEREK]: He was alongside no more and I can't remember the other members, but I did remember human torch and no more about being in that team and here we have another human torch potentially beforehand.

28:10.154 --> 28:14.938
[DEREK]: So I thought that was kind of cool to have the visual of someone on fire is definitely cool.

28:15.119 --> 28:17.000
[DEREK]: Yeah, black and white and the adding color as well.

28:17.060 --> 28:17.841
[DEREK]: So cool stuff.

28:18.281 --> 28:20.183
[DEREK]: And let's get on to our third website, John.

28:24.305 --> 28:26.026
[DEREK]: It does sound like it's open in the bottle, doesn't it?

28:26.186 --> 28:26.646
[DEREK]: Oh, yeah.

28:27.647 --> 28:34.812
[DEREK]: So our third web shop is the infidelity investigation, because this brings in our other major character, Cass Hardy.

28:34.992 --> 28:38.574
[JOHN]: The classic case for Phil Noir.

28:38.714 --> 28:44.097
[JOHN]: We have Jessica Jones doing the same kind of work in the Marvel Netflix show.

28:44.478 --> 28:52.683
[JOHN]: So yeah, I really like we get this massive infidelity case and trope from the detective.

28:53.023 --> 28:53.383
[JOHN]: Absolutely.

28:53.423 --> 29:08.852
[DEREK]: Yeah, and it does feel like this is Ben Roy's bread and butter does Yeah, because early on again talking in the bar with the with the woman who's chatting them up Saying I've got a husband, but I'd never stop me to stop me having fun and Ben looks at her And she goes, uh, do you get cats?

29:08.872 --> 29:13.835
[DEREK]: My drift and it goes, yep, I do and if your husband catches your drift too I'm telling you give me a call

29:14.655 --> 29:18.600
[JOHN]: I will say it, but it is really good here the Mr.

29:18.640 --> 29:32.957
[JOHN]: Karma comedy comes here to ask Riley to follow his wife and for the new case, but yeah, I love just the look of Nicholas Cage which is like

29:33.798 --> 29:34.819
[JOHN]: Are you a rich man?

29:34.839 --> 29:35.540
[JOHN]: No.

29:36.500 --> 29:38.122
[JOHN]: Are you a wissie man?

29:38.142 --> 29:48.530
[JOHN]: And you know, so clearly a man who is baffing above his average man, if it is even legit.

29:48.670 --> 29:51.393
[JOHN]: So I love that this irrespective of

29:51.993 --> 30:05.677
[JOHN]: tingley spider senses immediately has the suspicion of Ben Riley with this case, however, doesn't even turn the photograph of cast towards to what Janet and Dennis go and there's no way.

30:05.857 --> 30:06.537
[JOHN]: Absolutely.

30:06.997 --> 30:13.879
[JOHN]: But he does have to take it because we do kind of get the sense here that and they whilst

30:15.412 --> 30:19.234
[JOHN]: this may be the type of case that is that is his bread and butter.

30:19.754 --> 30:28.859
[JOHN]: He hasn't necessarily been doing very well on the business front for the Riley investigations.

30:29.020 --> 30:33.922
[JOHN]: As a business, as we have Janet saying, you know, we need to keep some of these cases.

30:33.942 --> 30:37.224
[JOHN]: You kind of, I like how

30:39.185 --> 30:49.892
[JOHN]: You know, you get a series of cases really just not really going anywhere in this first episode and just because of what's happened to Aderson and ultimately with Carmody.

30:50.493 --> 31:01.920
[JOHN]: But we get the, we get told by Janet that her phone is increasingly becoming a paperweight because you can't pay the phone, but even Carmody comes in and says,

31:03.007 --> 31:15.575
[JOHN]: I tried calling you and but there was no answer and you have Janet really kind of stepping up and saying well Mr. Riley does look prefer to conduct business face to face and so yeah he is a keeper.

31:15.695 --> 31:16.695
[JOHN]: I really enjoyed Janet's here.

31:22.979 --> 31:23.179
[DEREK]: Yeah.

31:23.459 --> 31:25.761
[DEREK]: And Ben does go out and follow up the leads for the case.

31:25.781 --> 31:37.831
[DEREK]: He goes down to the place he's been told to go to the recliff, which is Hotel, and finds Cat Hardy there with somebody who he can't see at that particular moment.

31:37.911 --> 31:43.956
[DEREK]: But he sees the two of them interacting and sees that the guy is trying to put his hands all over Cat.

31:44.877 --> 31:49.621
[DEREK]: And he uses his body webbing to stop him from attacking

31:51.962 --> 31:58.467
[DEREK]: which I love, I love that he will still use his special abilities when he needs to in the world.

31:58.487 --> 32:00.068
[JOHN]: Yeah, definitely.

32:00.608 --> 32:09.635
[JOHN]: I do like the fact here that Janet is the the processor for the for the negatives and ultimately they see that

32:10.375 --> 32:26.456
[JOHN]: the person who cat has been with is the the man running for reelection as man Alfred Morris and so ultimately comedy gets phobed off in a sense Ben Riley's thinking this is too much trouble then it's worth

32:27.137 --> 32:29.598
[JOHN]: and gives his money back to him.

32:29.618 --> 32:34.101
[JOHN]: And I love that Janice is not that impressed here, as I was saying.

32:34.821 --> 32:37.222
[JOHN]: But she comes out with some really good quotes here.

32:37.262 --> 32:38.823
[JOHN]: She says, we need that money.

32:38.943 --> 32:41.424
[JOHN]: I don't know if you've noticed, but there's a depression.

32:41.824 --> 32:43.025
[JOHN]: Hey, you're secretary.

32:43.425 --> 32:51.169
[JOHN]: And she goes, my husband has this annoying habit of wanting food on a daily basis, you know, I need to get paid.

32:51.809 --> 32:54.211
[JOHN]: And so I really like this kind of,

32:55.405 --> 33:06.478
[JOHN]: I think you described it before, Pesa Passa, and I think actually I love all the kind of rhythm of the conversations in this episode.

33:06.578 --> 33:10.122
[JOHN]: And I think at the centre of it is just excellent sort

33:10.703 --> 33:32.833
[JOHN]: back and forth by Nicholas Cage as Ben Riley, with different people, you know, the woman at the bar, his secretary, with the competing PI, Donald, you name it, he's just got this really nice sort of tempo to how he and just the slie dry wit, which I think probably is another

33:33.473 --> 33:35.134
[JOHN]: great film noir troupe.

33:35.254 --> 33:58.445
[DEREK]: I was thinking that yeah I was wondering whether it's it's takes this inspiration from some of the other screwball comedies like some like a hot that kind of stuff because the the past are between him and the other characters random is is a little more comedic than you'd probably see in some of the hard boiled detective film noir so I wonder if they just took inspiration from both because the writing is so good but they they really make that choice to err on the side of a

34:01.366 --> 34:12.555
[JOHN]: I think it's deeply laced with irony as well, you know, all of this stuff, sarcasm and wit and it really comes across nicely, definitely, definitely.

34:12.835 --> 34:21.782
[DEREK]: But also channel on the possibility that you might be able to get some money and some pay, does encourage Ben to go off and maybe blackmail.

34:25.443 --> 34:29.023
[JOHN]: She's sleeping with the mayor, you know, maybe she'll pay out, you know, loads of scruples.

34:29.083 --> 34:29.363
[JOHN]: Yes.

34:29.403 --> 34:46.567
[DEREK]: So we do guess our introduction to Cat Arty in the best way, him going down to her club, sitting in the audience while she comes out to sing her song, her kind of intro, I guess, which is where she does her version of Dream of Little Dream, and again in that interview with the, with the,

34:47.707 --> 35:13.761
[DEREK]: Director of photography he was saying that this was filmed like a video for that sound of work for that single as if it was released in the 1930s and watching it but ways in color and black and white looks fantastic and interestingly in her kind of additional lyrics to the song her kind of breakdown they actually include the line from the black and white to the colorful you'll be watching me kind of things so they are telling you you should be watching it in both what's just why

35:13.881 --> 35:14.201
[DEREK]: everybody.

35:14.341 --> 35:14.902
[DEREK]: Absolutely.

35:15.042 --> 35:18.465
[JOHN]: No, I mean, that interpretation, I think of that song.

35:18.905 --> 35:20.366
[JOHN]: I thought was really, really good.

35:20.406 --> 35:24.630
[JOHN]: I think I've seen it three times now and I just really like the interpretation.

35:24.930 --> 35:25.911
[JOHN]: I like the style of it.

35:26.011 --> 35:28.613
[JOHN]: I like a really enjoy.

35:29.653 --> 35:34.195
[JOHN]: the performance of leisurely as cat-hardy doing it.

35:34.335 --> 35:51.703
[JOHN]: It's really so well done and it's a little bit different and now that you say it really they do make a thing of it so yeah this was a great little sequence of her coming on to stage and performing dream of

35:56.125 --> 36:10.109
[JOHN]: you know, the thing that we do see here as well is we get, you know, throughout the episode so far there has been the talk of Silvermain, this crime boss who's house has been burnt down and here

36:17.745 --> 36:31.231
[JOHN]: and Ben Riley trying to avoid him because I think him and Donical have realized that the man who has hired them is the sort of right hand man for this crime boss.

36:31.691 --> 36:35.453
[DEREK]: Yeah, lots of danger there for them when Ben sees a silver man.

36:35.473 --> 36:39.975
[DEREK]: I think he runs straight to the phone to call Donical to try and warn him.

36:40.155 --> 36:42.878
[DEREK]: that's the person that took the case from is a silver man.

36:43.258 --> 36:45.361
[DEREK]: And just one of the things I wanted to mention, maybe a cat already.

36:45.881 --> 36:49.485
[DEREK]: Anybody that knows the comic books, we'll know one of the major characters in the comics.

36:49.505 --> 36:54.610
[DEREK]: I'm one of Peter Parker's love interests was Felicia Hardy, who's black cast.

36:55.071 --> 36:58.334
[DEREK]: And so having cast Hardy, I think is that reference.

36:58.815 --> 37:01.258
[DEREK]: And we've mentioned a lot of these kind of

37:01.818 --> 37:25.657
[DEREK]: alternate universe takes of major characters in Marvel, they'll do this, they'll drop in characters, they'll have similar names to the current characters, they'll always fun finding out whether they're going to be the same in the past or in a different universe, or they're going to be slightly different, so here at Khahar, you slightly different a singer in a club, but has the same kind of sensual love interest that Felicia Hardy played with loads in the Spider-Man

37:26.658 --> 37:33.124
[DEREK]: I kind of love that idea that you'd have her being this femme fatale because that would be the position that Flish already would play as well.

37:33.164 --> 37:34.826
[DEREK]: It's definitely very cool.

37:35.106 --> 37:48.058
[DEREK]: And again, lots of name dropping here of characters and as you're hearing the names you're going, oh, I know that character from the kind of books I wonder how it's going to play out here in the show, which does bring us to our next web shop, John.

37:48.438 --> 37:49.800
[JOHN]: Yes, web shop number four.

37:53.257 --> 38:12.775
[DEREK]: silver rain the big shot in town now I don't think they're going to take a huge amount of inspiration from the android version of silver rain that's in this part of my comics but they do take inspiration from him being the big boss man a member of the uh i think it's the magia in the in marvel comics uh who are the mafia or the uh the organized crime

38:13.355 --> 38:13.636
[DEREK]: boss.

38:13.656 --> 38:22.484
[DEREK]: It was here played by Brendan Gleason with I would say his most accuracy, Dilden Axon, so that we've heard him use on screen.

38:22.504 --> 38:25.827
[DEREK]: He normally has much more of a receive pronunciation.

38:26.347 --> 38:28.329
[DEREK]: I respect him, you can definitely try this always art, especially.

38:28.349 --> 38:28.850
[DEREK]: Yeah, yeah.

38:28.910 --> 38:31.232
[DEREK]: This time he sounds like some of the legit and the road from last slide.

38:31.272 --> 38:33.254
[DEREK]: He's very much got us Dilden Axon Tom.

38:33.667 --> 38:47.461
[JOHN]: Yeah, absolutely, it immediately evokes someone who has risen from the streets, the dirt, sort of poverty, whatever, you know, from an immigrant family.

38:47.481 --> 38:48.642
[JOHN]: Exactly.

38:49.062 --> 38:51.205
[JOHN]: And has made it big.

38:51.345 --> 38:54.748
[JOHN]: You know, through sheer will through

38:55.749 --> 39:10.303
[JOHN]: craftiness, you know, or pure look and intelligence, whatever it might be, and I really, really enjoy Brendan Gleason's take here, I still for main, because I think it's one of those characters that

39:10.984 --> 39:24.551
[JOHN]: You know, ultimately it's just the big boss and I think the big boss does have to, you know, assuming that I should say he's the name and the character isn't going to take inspiration from the sort of android.

39:25.051 --> 39:29.613
[JOHN]: Then he's got to compete against superheroes.

39:29.653 --> 39:29.853
[JOHN]: Yes.

39:30.354 --> 39:36.056
[JOHN]: And, you know, there is that hint that suggestion that he's after Addison,

39:37.257 --> 39:40.480
[JOHN]: And yes, he might just kill him, but I think there's more to it than that.

39:40.540 --> 39:45.824
[JOHN]: He's kind of enthralled by the notion that he does have powers.

39:46.905 --> 39:47.965
[JOHN]: Yes, absolutely.

39:47.985 --> 39:53.149
[JOHN]: And he's wanting a piece of that because he knows what that means for his business.

39:53.430 --> 39:53.990
[JOHN]: Yeah.

39:54.110 --> 39:59.574
[JOHN]: And I really like just how that comes across, just more about the narrowing of the eyes.

40:00.635 --> 40:12.305
[JOHN]: I mean, even in probably one of the, you know, the more brutal parts of this episode where you have his two goons beating up the P.I.

40:12.345 --> 40:20.352
[JOHN]: Donggol, who's gone to ask for way more money than you should have done, and they already know that Addison is dead.

40:20.793 --> 40:23.075
[JOHN]: And, you know, he's tied to a chair, he's

40:25.757 --> 40:26.738
[DEREK]: That's what I'm going to say.

40:26.778 --> 40:29.640
[DEREK]: Yeah, these guys are such idiots that they're like sorry boss the guys dash.

40:29.780 --> 40:32.503
[DEREK]: We we went too far Yeah, and then

40:33.658 --> 40:57.568
[JOHN]: Yeah, but still for me, it's not entirely convinced by this explanation, so just plunges his little dagger that comes from his cane into his doggoals hand, which route arouses him from his basically unconscious knocked out state.

40:57.588 --> 41:01.729
[JOHN]: I think for me, what's really fantastic about this scene,

41:03.290 --> 41:06.372
[JOHN]: Brendan Gleason has silver mean talking to Daragore.

41:06.532 --> 41:10.894
[JOHN]: It's almost like a soothing parent, you know, as he takes his life.

41:11.674 --> 41:13.615
[JOHN]: And it's like, that's all I need to know.

41:14.575 --> 41:15.956
[JOHN]: And then you'll be able to go.

41:15.976 --> 41:22.339
[JOHN]: It's just that to be able to go is you will go to you there.

41:22.579 --> 41:25.381
[JOHN]: But it's also soothing, almost,

41:30.523 --> 41:46.363
[JOHN]: Dongle is barely conscious, but it's all this kind of soothing, encouraging words for him to sort of give up something, you know, even when he says I don't know anything more, he's like, that's fine, that's fine, just before he slits his throat.

41:46.863 --> 41:59.558
[JOHN]: And I just think this is really, really good because it feels, I mean it's not entirely the same, but it's just that on the stage in the level and it's almost like you get from Hannibal Lecter in a sense.

41:59.618 --> 42:00.299
[JOHN]: Absolutely.

42:00.339 --> 42:01.581
[JOHN]: Just so, so good.

42:01.701 --> 42:03.964
[JOHN]: But knowing that underneath the hood,

42:04.564 --> 42:10.408
[JOHN]: is, you know, this desperately psychotic and violent individual.

42:10.508 --> 42:10.668
[DEREK]: Yeah.

42:10.908 --> 42:11.069
[DEREK]: Yeah.

42:11.369 --> 42:23.357
[DEREK]: And that leads us to kind of the, what, what I presume will be the overarching case and investigation for the show, where it's revealed that, um, what Silverman really wants the information that he really needs is,

42:24.017 --> 42:29.923
[DEREK]: who hired Addison to burn down his house and try to kill him because he got very close to killing Silverman.

42:30.943 --> 42:32.745
[DEREK]: So that's kind of the overarching one.

42:32.765 --> 42:38.290
[DEREK]: We have loads of cases that are coming Ben Raleigh's way as we've seen loads of things are appearing at his front door.

42:38.931 --> 42:46.718
[DEREK]: But the overarching piece seems to be who hired Addison to get into Silverman's house and burn it down.

42:46.838 --> 42:50.639
[JOHN]: And also from Silvermain here, you have, you know, he's done this to me.

42:50.719 --> 43:07.665
[JOHN]: I want to know who it is and why, but it's also, I've never felt more alive, like this is almost reignited his enthusiasm for what he does because, you know, but it's like despite what he's done.

43:08.943 --> 43:13.244
[JOHN]: And he's made me feel more alive than I have done in a number of years.

43:13.264 --> 43:14.605
[JOHN]: Yeah, probably five years.

43:14.625 --> 43:15.485
[JOHN]: Well, yes, exactly.

43:15.525 --> 43:15.945
[DEREK]: It was right.

43:16.685 --> 43:18.806
[DEREK]: So that was a nice little twitch as well.

43:19.046 --> 43:19.446
[DEREK]: Absolutely.

43:19.686 --> 43:20.006
[DEREK]: Absolutely.

43:20.566 --> 43:24.407
[DEREK]: That's probably enough of self-maintenance because we're going to talk about loads as the series goes on.

43:24.427 --> 43:24.767
[DEREK]: I'm sure.

43:25.287 --> 43:26.948
[DEREK]: Let's talk about our final web shot then, John.

43:28.767 --> 43:30.748
[DEREK]: Our website 5 is, well, the sound ban.

43:31.389 --> 43:37.893
[DEREK]: That's a different type of sound ban in the Marvel Universe than the one that we talked about for two seasons on TV podcast industry's jump.

43:38.793 --> 43:44.317
[DEREK]: Same name as the sound ban that we've seen in the MCU though, Flint Marco is here.

43:44.357 --> 43:52.462
[DEREK]: So, again, a great one if you're paying attention and you hear a cast call for Flint to come over.

43:53.103 --> 43:56.265
[DEREK]: If you didn't know, sound ban was going to appear, you do the second year here his name.

43:58.786 --> 44:09.873
[JOHN]: Yeah, and so he is kind of given the wink and the nod from cat to, you know, after effectively being black males by a PI, so it's not the best of looks, I guess.

44:09.913 --> 44:10.133
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

44:10.694 --> 44:18.639
[JOHN]: And she tells Flint with a nod in a wink to tail Ben Riley as he leaves.

44:19.199 --> 44:25.683
[JOHN]: And I do like the fact that the end of the top of a skyscraper that's being constructed,

44:28.325 --> 44:41.093
[JOHN]: a hundred percent necessary and but also really yeah no it is it's very cool but I think Flintmarker is effectively asking for the negatives off of Ben Riley and as a real good

44:42.422 --> 44:46.886
[JOHN]: scrap at the top of the skyscraper under construction.

44:47.006 --> 45:00.758
[JOHN]: I love that Flintmarco in trying to intimidate Ben Riley is kind of has him teetering off the edge of the skyscraper and Ben Riley says, well it's funny I'm just not that afraid of heights.

45:02.020 --> 45:04.462
[JOHN]: But we do get nice little moment where he does get

45:06.924 --> 45:27.615
[JOHN]: knocked or if he is pushed off the the top of the skyscraper and he whips his way back up to the top, which Funt Marco does see that and you see the realisation and here's someone else in a similar position to him or actually here is the spider and

45:31.117 --> 45:33.098
[JOHN]: you know again the fight that breaks out.

45:33.298 --> 45:38.060
[JOHN]: Ratchet's up a bit really hit with the knowledge that the both superpowers.

45:38.280 --> 45:55.208
[DEREK]: Yeah and one of the little touches I do like is you know Ben Rally hasn't been inspired by the spider for quite a while so when he lands back up after whipping himself back up to the roof he doesn't land daintly like the spider what does he kind of falls over but but they get a lands on his face and does.

45:55.888 --> 45:59.490
[DEREK]: But Flint Marcos skin starts to turn to sand and he starts

46:00.490 --> 46:18.890
[DEREK]: creating weapons out of his fist just like Sandman on the comics still so they have a big kind of battle um this looks great again another one that looks great in color and black and white you know and and and color you can really see the kind of stony sandy face that he that he gets um in black and white it it does look uh

46:19.550 --> 46:21.812
[DEREK]: on natural and different, doesn't it?

46:21.972 --> 46:23.573
[DEREK]: Yeah, that's the way they've done it.

46:23.594 --> 46:30.859
[DEREK]: So really cool, but the spider basically is winning the battle until Cat comes in and tells them to break it off basically.

46:31.640 --> 46:32.661
[DEREK]: Leave them alone and just leave.

46:33.141 --> 46:37.465
[JOHN]: Yeah, basically please would then to leave a flint alone and then kind of

46:37.905 --> 46:47.307
[JOHN]: In the moment, gives the negatives, you know, trucks from onto Flintmark and gives cat the negatives of her and the mayor.

46:47.667 --> 46:58.050
[JOHN]: I do like we have Janet getting a noise and has cat then arrives the next day at Ben Riley's offices.

47:00.761 --> 47:04.682
[JOHN]: Jan, it's not getting, Jan, it's not getting paid, so if you need to.

47:04.762 --> 47:17.647
[JOHN]: She is threatening to quit here, but cat arrives to give him and Jan is a job, which is to find her bodyguard flint Marco, who is then disappeared since yesterday evening.

47:17.727 --> 47:19.247
[DEREK]: Exactly, exactly, yes.

47:20.948 --> 47:24.469
[DEREK]: She's basically being told by Janet that Ben is retiring.

47:25.330 --> 47:29.471
[DEREK]: I do love Ben's reaction to Janet as well, going, and that's my aunt's lamp.

47:29.531 --> 47:31.752
[DEREK]: She gave it to me when she died.

47:31.772 --> 47:35.694
[DEREK]: So I think it's really funny actually tacking up every second of the others for herself.

47:36.074 --> 47:36.514
[DEREK]: Really good.

47:36.594 --> 47:39.515
[DEREK]: But yes, cats there to hire and to look for Marco who's disappeared.

47:40.956 --> 47:53.488
[JOHN]: Yeah, so whilst he doesn't get the blackmail cash, he just gets a $50 retainer and $10 per day plus expenses and also just starts on the case to find a flint Marco.

47:53.828 --> 47:57.151
[DEREK]: Exactly, so an interesting setup for the next step.

47:57.752 --> 47:58.272
[DEREK]: Definitely.

47:58.693 --> 47:59.633
[DEREK]: Good stuff.

47:59.673 --> 48:02.376
[DEREK]: John, I mean, notice about the episode that you want to mention, let me have him talk to me.

48:02.576 --> 48:10.663
[JOHN]: And yeah, just one, in the prologue base at the start, I do like he has a reference or into the spiderverse.

48:11.163 --> 48:22.213
[JOHN]: Well, then Riley, as a spider, sort of in voice services, someone wants to ask me what universe I'm from, which I found strange as this universe is the only one I know.

48:22.233 --> 48:22.733
[JOHN]: Exactly.

48:23.073 --> 48:26.837
[JOHN]: So, again, just a nice little touch to into the Spider-Verse.

48:26.917 --> 48:29.059
[DEREK]: Yeah, yeah, I love that open and prologue as well.

48:29.079 --> 48:38.949
[DEREK]: I love the idea that we have the show opening with Spidey swinging through the streets of New York because it's the one image that you always want them to get right when they're doing live action.

48:38.969 --> 48:42.233
[DEREK]: So, I don't mind, there's not having Spidey swinging through the streets in New York.

48:42.253 --> 48:43.374
[DEREK]: And so, we're not going to get that.

48:43.754 --> 48:46.216
[DEREK]: in the show because he's retired as the spider.

48:46.716 --> 48:47.717
[DEREK]: Open up the show with it, right?

48:47.757 --> 48:49.898
[DEREK]: It looks incredible, in black and white.

48:49.918 --> 48:52.300
[DEREK]: It looks great in color, having that as you're opening scene.

48:52.620 --> 48:59.905
[DEREK]: And then we hear the the famous line that's we used at the beginning here of my wife once told me that McGreat Paracom's great responsibility.

48:59.925 --> 49:03.247
[DEREK]: And she died at which is the fault of the spider.

49:03.307 --> 49:06.129
[DEREK]: So I gave up the power and gave up the responsibility.

49:06.169 --> 49:09.571
[DEREK]: So yeah, I love love that as the opening setting the

49:11.792 --> 49:20.282
[DEREK]: That's 1928 and the shows set in 1933 so so a little bit of a jump over one decade to the other Yeah, we see as well.

49:20.323 --> 49:21.624
[DEREK]: So yeah, love that in the stars.

49:22.285 --> 49:28.212
[DEREK]: I think that's it for our chance all about the first steps I was about anywhere So John, do you defend this episode?

49:28.312 --> 49:29.754
[DEREK]: I'll spot a noir come into my office

49:30.520 --> 49:34.662
[JOHN]: I really do defend this episode, step into my office.

49:34.982 --> 49:38.924
[JOHN]: I give it five in key investigations out of five.

49:39.524 --> 49:42.046
[DEREK]: Yeah, I just love the whole feel and vibe.

49:42.106 --> 49:50.470
[JOHN]: I think Nicholas Cage is absolutely fantastic here as Ben Riley PI detective who can't hold down a case.

49:51.130 --> 49:52.371
[JOHN]: I love his suffering.

49:53.951 --> 50:01.155
[JOHN]: Secretary Janet, who is more than a secretary as a partner, really enjoy that relationship.

50:01.256 --> 50:03.877
[JOHN]: She's really the manager for the whole place and nothing would run with it.

50:04.037 --> 50:04.958
[JOHN]: Yeah, absolutely.

50:05.998 --> 50:15.163
[JOHN]: I think the dialogue here centered around Nicholas Cage is just super whether it's with Kat Hardy, who's

50:16.304 --> 50:19.267
[JOHN]: dream a little dream song of great intro for her.

50:20.148 --> 50:24.171
[JOHN]: I love that we'd see Addison as the him in Torch.

50:24.211 --> 50:31.358
[JOHN]: We see Flint Marco as the Sandman in this first episode where introduced to Silverman and his

50:31.958 --> 50:33.418
[JOHN]: his own assistant Winston.

50:33.798 --> 50:36.779
[JOHN]: And I think, you know, so far the sequences are really good.

50:37.199 --> 50:43.381
[JOHN]: The fight between Flint and Ben at the top of the skyscraper under construction is really good.

50:43.481 --> 50:50.922
[JOHN]: You know, some real creepy stuff with Brandon in terms of his kill on Donnagle.

50:51.243 --> 50:59.945
[JOHN]: And yeah, overall absolutely enjoyed this first episode of Spiderman who are five in key investigations

51:02.206 --> 51:05.736
[JOHN]: So Derek, do you defend this episode of Spider-In-Wart?

51:06.443 --> 51:07.004
[DEREK]: Absolutely.

51:07.744 --> 51:08.845
[DEREK]: The proof is in the pudding.

51:08.865 --> 51:12.148
[DEREK]: We wouldn't be covering Spiderman or if this episode wasn't as good as it was.

51:12.608 --> 51:17.752
[DEREK]: We absolutely had no intention of covering another 8 episodes show, especially when the drop to all episodes in the same day.

51:17.812 --> 51:22.255
[DEREK]: But sitting down and watching this for the first time, by the end of it, both of us were just smiling like kids.

51:22.376 --> 51:26.619
[DEREK]: And this is something brand new that we've not seen in this universe before.

51:27.159 --> 51:30.362
[DEREK]: And really exciting, Nicholas Cage is doing a fantastic job.

51:30.382 --> 51:31.423
[DEREK]: Definitely.

51:31.483 --> 51:34.265
[DEREK]: And when he does that, it's hired not to like it, isn't it?

51:34.745 --> 51:35.585
[DEREK]: Yeah, absolutely.

51:35.825 --> 51:38.266
[DEREK]: Yeah, absolutely defend this loved this episode.

51:38.666 --> 51:43.228
[DEREK]: I want to hear the thoughts of our wonderful fellow defenders as well And I was getting really good ratings.

51:43.728 --> 52:01.635
[DEREK]: Lots of people very surprised by what's come out of it So make sure you do mellows to feedback at TV podcast industries Duckcom with your thoughts or pop on our tour Facebook group or to discord To leave your thoughts on the spoiler posts over there Coffee and vodka did send in his feedback on the first two episodes together So we'll have his feedback on the next episode

52:02.195 --> 52:07.759
[DEREK]: but we did get some feedback in from Dr. Bob on Discord, who says, this is how you open a detective noir.

52:07.859 --> 52:11.302
[DEREK]: How not to follow it is to drop the entire season straight afterwards.

52:11.982 --> 52:19.427
[DEREK]: Useful, beautifully sharp, classically mildly overacted, even cage, fantastic music and gorgeous sess.

52:19.687 --> 52:24.811
[DEREK]: The storyline matches too, enough of the dime stores simplicity to make the show a feast for the eyes and an easy

52:29.574 --> 52:30.034
[DEREK]: Absolutely.

52:30.094 --> 52:30.795
[DEREK]: Thanks, Dr. Bob.

52:30.815 --> 52:32.275
[DEREK]: Yeah, I love your thoughts there.

52:32.556 --> 52:34.817
[DEREK]: I look forward to hearing your thoughts throughout the rest of the season.

52:35.397 --> 52:39.639
[DEREK]: Thank you all so much for joining us for our first episode of Spider-Noir.

52:39.659 --> 52:45.182
[DEREK]: We will be back next time with episode two, tread lightly, later on on the week, so we'd love to hear your thoughts.

52:45.537 --> 52:46.658
[JOHN]: Yes, absolutely.

52:47.018 --> 52:52.640
[JOHN]: Thank you so much, fellow defenders for joining us for our impromptu coverage of Spider-Noir.

52:53.081 --> 52:56.942
[JOHN]: And until Spider-Noir episode, do hot shots.

52:57.163 --> 53:08.508
[JOHN]: Keep watching, keep listening, and of course keep defending. Bye.
