Lanterns Episode 1 Review

Welcome to the podcast fellow guardians, we are finally back in the DC TV universe with Lanterns Episode 1 "Pilot". The brand new DC series on HBO Max.

Lanterns Episode 1 “Pilot” Synopsis

Episode Written by: Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King

Episode Directed By: James Hawes

In 1996, the young John Stewart and his brothers watch on as Earth's only ever Green Lantern reveals his identity to the world. He is Hal Jordan and he was chosen as the successor of Green Lantern Abin Sur after he crashed his ship and died. He just had to answer one question "Is he afraid?". When John's father arrives home he asks the same question of his son while shooting an apple off his head.

Twenty years later, in 2016, John Stewart is now supposedly being mentored by Hal Jordan to become the next Green Lantern. When John received a cryptic message from a holographic projection of a kinder, younger Hal from inside the Green Lantern ring, it sends the duo to Rushville, Nebraska.

With little support from Hal, John helps the town's Sheriff, Kerry Kane to capture a suspect involved in a mass shooting at their town's football stadium. But Sheriff Kane forbids Hal from joining the investigation, believing the case has no extraterrestrial connection.

Trying to get close to the suspect, Hal gets himself arrested for a bar fight, but the Sheriff keeps him separated in jail until he is bailed out by lawyer, and Kerry's husband, Billy Macon. In return, Hal agrees to meet Kerry's father-in-law William Macon Senior, who arranges for Hal to interrogate the suspect, Waylon Sanders.

During the interrogation, Hal exposes Sanders as an alien; In retaliation the alien detonates a bomb in his body but Hal uses the last of his ring's power to contain the damage.

Ten years further on, in 2026, John Stewart returns to Rushville, where the Macon farm has fallen to rack and ruin. Back at the town's football station, Sheriff Kerry Kane shows him a dead and frozen Hal and John notices he's missing his Green Lantern ring.

00:00 --> 00:02 [SPEAKER_01]: This is Lantern's on TV podcasted industries.
00:03 --> 00:06 [SPEAKER_01]: We're back with a brand new show, DC's Lantern's on HP MX.
00:06 --> 00:07 [SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about episode one.
00:07 --> 00:08 [SPEAKER_01]: Pylice.
00:09 --> 00:09 [SPEAKER_00]: My dead.
00:10 --> 00:10 [SPEAKER_00]: What?
00:11 --> 00:12 [SPEAKER_00]: You were in my ring.
00:12 --> 00:13 [SPEAKER_00]: Is that supposed to be funny?
00:16 --> 00:19 [SPEAKER_00]: If I do something to piss you off, because if I did, I'm sorry.
00:19 --> 00:19 [SPEAKER_00]: You?
00:20 --> 00:20 [SPEAKER_00]: How Jordan?
00:21 --> 00:21 [SPEAKER_00]: Sorry.
00:21 --> 00:22 [SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
00:23 --> 00:24 [SPEAKER_00]: I must have a concussion.
00:25 --> 00:26 [SPEAKER_00]: Wait a sec.
00:26 --> 00:28 [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to start at the beginning.
00:29 --> 00:31 [SPEAKER_00]: Who are you and why you wear in my ring?
00:31 --> 00:33 [SPEAKER_00]: I'm John Stewart, you're traini.
00:34 --> 00:36 [SPEAKER_00]: Lannon's don't have traini's from their own sector.
00:36 --> 00:37 [SPEAKER_00]: They do now.
01:04 --> 01:14 [SPEAKER_01]: Welcome fellow lanterns, this is TV Plotcast Industries, where back with the first episode of lanterns on HBOX, the episode title is Puyless, I am one of your host, Derek.
01:14 --> 01:17 [SPEAKER_02]: Hello there, yes, fellow lanterns.
01:17 --> 01:22 [SPEAKER_02]: I was hoping to say Gothamites because it is in the DC universe, but I'll go with either.
01:23 --> 01:28 [SPEAKER_02]: So yes, welcome fellow lanterns and welcome back fellow Gothamites if you're joining us.
01:29 --> 01:31 [SPEAKER_02]: I am one of your other host, John.
01:32 --> 01:37 [SPEAKER_02]: I kept thinking this should be called Pilots because you've got how...
01:37 --> 01:41 [SPEAKER_02]: Jordan and John Stewart, not back John Stewart.
01:42 --> 01:43 [SPEAKER_02]: No, the John Stewart is exactly.
01:43 --> 01:49 [SPEAKER_02]: So, um, yeah, really great to be back in the DC universe.
01:49 --> 01:50 [SPEAKER_01]: It's been quite a while.
01:50 --> 01:55 [SPEAKER_01]: And this is our first show as far as I'm aware that doesn't contain any connections, but
01:56 --> 01:57 [SPEAKER_02]: No, none or whatsoever.
01:57 --> 02:00 [SPEAKER_02]: Our last hour thing was a penguin really.
02:00 --> 02:07 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that a great TV show and at least for me You know straight off the bat.
02:07 --> 02:11 [SPEAKER_02]: I'd probably say it's all the time and with the exception of anything to do with Dr.
02:11 --> 02:14 [SPEAKER_02]: Strange or the magical will of Marvel.
02:15 --> 02:20 [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, for me, lanterns would really be low on my radar of
02:21 --> 02:47 [SPEAKER_02]: comics sure if they were in adjacent comics or they were involved in big crossovers or whatever then yes I would obviously have some knowledge of the lanterns but I'm really intrigued by this because other than watching kind of a little sort of warmer in the form of one of the cartoons for the
02:47 --> 02:48 [SPEAKER_02]: Green lanterns.
02:48 --> 02:49 [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yes.
02:49 --> 02:50 [SPEAKER_01]: John Stewart's in this.
02:50 --> 02:50 [SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
02:50 --> 02:54 [SPEAKER_01]: One of the 2002 to the 2022 animated movie.
02:55 --> 02:56 [SPEAKER_02]: The animation movie.
02:56 --> 03:00 [SPEAKER_02]: Then that was a nice little primer, nice little warmer for this.
03:00 --> 03:02 [SPEAKER_02]: I'm kind of an open book, really.
03:02 --> 03:09 [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, really pleased to be getting into this, uh, the show.
03:09 --> 03:20 [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, and if you're joining us for the first time on TV podcast industry, we've had been podcasting about TV for 11 years now, and it started with our Gotham podcast on the DC podcast, effectively.
03:20 --> 03:24 [SPEAKER_01]: We have been podcasting about loads of other shows, John mentioned some of the Marvel shows that we've been podcasting.
03:24 --> 03:33 [SPEAKER_01]: But generally we've kind of stuck around on the DC side, around the Batman universe with Pennyworth, and with all the movies that featured Batman, and we're connected to Batman.
03:33 --> 03:36 [SPEAKER_01]: We haven't done much in the new James Goon Peter
03:36 --> 03:38 [SPEAKER_01]: universe of the DC.
03:38 --> 03:40 [SPEAKER_01]: So this will be our first kind of dip into that.
03:41 --> 03:42 [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm kind of excited about it.
03:43 --> 03:55 [SPEAKER_01]: You know, there are reasons which we'll talk about as we get more in depth into this as to why this is the show that we picked to have a look at some connections to other shows that we've been we've covered in the past and put very excited from the beginning.
03:55 --> 04:04 [SPEAKER_01]: I think we saw a the first five minutes of the episode a couple of weeks ago and went, right, this is definitely one that we want to put everything aside and try and and cover every week as a
04:05 --> 04:06 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, definitely.
04:06 --> 04:28 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, look, spoilers for my thoughts, but I really enjoyed this first episode of Lanterns and really wanted to go straight into episode 2, but I'm glad that they are keeping it purely episodic in this, does it reminds me of sort of watching ex files or different shows
04:34 --> 04:53 [SPEAKER_02]: what's going to happen next week really intriguing sort of excited it was always the balls in school or at uni absolutely and again and well and yeah and then work I do not want to say the water cooler moments never had one of those thank god we were spoken so it was just smoking yeah but that's true
04:54 --> 05:00 [SPEAKER_02]: But for sure, I just like the fact that it just keeps the conversation going across the week.
05:01 --> 05:03 [SPEAKER_02]: And I really enjoy that.
05:03 --> 05:10 [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's a really social way of having TV and so yeah.
05:11 --> 05:20 [SPEAKER_02]: I kind of liked the whole sort of cliffhanger at the end, getting me absolutely excited for the next episode.
05:20 --> 05:22 [SPEAKER_02]: So that's my spoiler on that.
05:22 --> 05:25 [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, and obviously we do need to remind everybody.
05:25 --> 05:26 [SPEAKER_01]: This is our first episode of a brand new show.
05:26 --> 05:31 [SPEAKER_01]: So if you haven't subscribed to the podcast, pop on our website at tvpodcastindustries.com.
05:31 --> 05:33 [SPEAKER_01]: you can also leave voicemails over there.

05:36 --> 05:41 [SPEAKER_01]: You can subscribe to any podcast player of your choice through the website of TV podcast industries.
05:41 --> 05:45 [SPEAKER_01]: This will be going on in our former Gotham feed because that's been quite silent for quite a while.
05:45 --> 05:50 [SPEAKER_01]: So you'll get it on there, but you'll also get it on our main feed and our TV podcast industry feed.
05:50 --> 05:57 [SPEAKER_01]: while we've podcasted for over a thousand episodes of Great TV and some fantastic movies out over the course of the last 11 years.
05:57 --> 06:16 [SPEAKER_01]: We also want to hear your thoughts on each episode of the show as they come out and we're hoping to record every Tuesday night to have a bit of time to get your feedback in before we start recording and it can email us to feedback at tvpodcastindustries.com, hop on over to our Facebook group at facebook.com slash groups slash TV podcast industries or join us on our Discord the details of which are in the
06:19 --> 06:20 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, absolutely.
06:20 --> 06:30 [SPEAKER_02]: I think without any further adieu, I should also announce fellow lanterns that we will be having a pub quiz.
06:31 --> 06:33 [SPEAKER_02]: for this series of lanterns.
06:33 --> 06:37 [SPEAKER_02]: In fact, I say it will be the Redneck Rushfield Barquiz.
06:38 --> 06:44 [SPEAKER_02]: It has to be after seeing the shenanigans in Rushfield with Hal Jordan.
06:44 --> 06:48 [SPEAKER_02]: So, yes, we'll have a Redneck Barquiz as well.
06:48 --> 06:53 [SPEAKER_02]: So, as we usually do, it will be one question per episode.
06:53 --> 06:59 [SPEAKER_02]: Send your answers into feedback at tvpodcastindustries.com at the end of the season.
07:00 --> 07:16 [SPEAKER_02]: all eight answers and send them in and they will be drawn in our wrap-up episode of Lantern's Season 1 and you'll be in chance to win some goodies if you are drawn from the Tombowler That's it.
07:16 --> 07:17 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's a fun.
07:17 --> 07:18 [SPEAKER_01]: That's very impressive for off the bus.
07:18 --> 07:20 [SPEAKER_01]: We'll remember it Good stuff.
07:20 --> 07:25 [SPEAKER_01]: So let's get into our chat all about the first episode of Lantern's season one episode one
07:26 --> 07:26 [SPEAKER_01]: Hi, this.
07:27 --> 07:28 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, Derek.
07:29 --> 07:31 [SPEAKER_02]: Who gave us what were when and how?
07:31 --> 07:33 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, the showrooms for the show is three of them here.
07:33 --> 07:36 [SPEAKER_01]: We've got Chris Mundi, Demlin Dolph and Tom King.
07:36 --> 07:41 [SPEAKER_01]: Chris Mundi was an executive producer on True Detective and those are two of our favorite drama shows.
07:42 --> 07:45 [SPEAKER_01]: They're Tom King very well known as a comic book writer from DC.
07:45 --> 07:48 [SPEAKER_01]: So bringing a board of comic book writer for a comic book TV show can
07:48 --> 07:49 [SPEAKER_01]: Come on, can you?
07:49 --> 07:52 [SPEAKER_01]: Now, Damon Lindell, I've probably the most well-known name in there.
07:52 --> 08:03 [SPEAKER_01]: He's an amazing track record for shows beginning with L. He was involved in the incredible lost and the phenomenal leftovers, another two of the greatest TV shows of all time.
08:04 --> 08:10 [SPEAKER_01]: And last time he's working in the DC University, led the brilliant writers room for Watchmen, still one of our top five shows, really isn't it?
08:10 --> 08:13 [SPEAKER_01]: And so here's hoping that Lanters would be as good as that one.
08:13 --> 08:25 [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely, yeah, and always a big Damon Lindloff fan, to be honest, yeah, and I think we did, is he, did we, we interviews him at New York Comic-Con?
08:26 --> 08:28 [SPEAKER_01]: Was it Damon Lindloff or was it,
08:29 --> 08:31 [SPEAKER_01]: No, it wasn't David Lindloff.
08:31 --> 08:33 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm trying to write my brain.
08:33 --> 08:41 [SPEAKER_01]: It was the Sherrod of Krypton and very well known from lots, lots of kind of book properties, and he's named just a skit match.
08:41 --> 08:42 [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
08:42 --> 08:46 [SPEAKER_01]: I'd love to have to look it up if we have a second and we might come back in a next week.
08:46 --> 08:47 [SPEAKER_02]: Excellent.
08:47 --> 08:49 [SPEAKER_02]: And who directed this episode?
08:49 --> 08:55 [SPEAKER_01]: well they wrote this episode the show released at all three of them involved in the right for the first episode and the episode is directed by James Haws.
08:55 --> 09:11 [SPEAKER_01]: He's recently been hiding away on Apple TV directing episodes of Slow Horses but he has done loads of shows that we absolutely love like Black Mirror and he's directed five episodes in season one and two of Penny Drill which we covered right here on this podcast that we did on our dreadful podcast.
09:11 --> 09:12 [SPEAKER_02]: That's right
09:12 --> 09:20 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, James Hall is really, really well experienced directors don't love to show his bush And but yeah, he's on board here for these first two episodes of Landtricks.
09:20 --> 09:27 [SPEAKER_01]: Yes Excellent, so John, do you want to tell us what they gave us with your synopsis for the first episode of Landtunes?
09:28 --> 09:31 [SPEAKER_02]: But, sure.
09:31 --> 09:38 [SPEAKER_02]: In 1996, the young John Stuart and his brothers watch on as Earth's only Evergreen Lantern reveals his identity to the world.
09:38 --> 09:47 [SPEAKER_02]: He is Hal Jordan, and he was chosen as the successor of Green Lantern Abhin Sur after he crashed his ship and died.
09:47 --> 09:50 [SPEAKER_02]: He just had to answer one question is he afraid.
09:51 --> 09:55 [SPEAKER_02]: When John's father arrives home, he asks the same question of his son,
09:58 --> 10:06 [SPEAKER_02]: 20 years later, in 2016, John Stewart is now supposedly being mentored by Hal Jordan to become the next Green Lantern.
10:07 --> 10:18 [SPEAKER_02]: When John received a cryptic message from a holographic projection of a kinder younger Hal from inside the Green Lantern ring, it sends the duo to Rushville, Nebraska.
10:18 --> 10:27 [SPEAKER_02]: With little support from Hal, John helps the town sheriff carry Kane to capture a suspect involved in a mass shooting at their town's football stadium.
10:27 --> 10:34 [SPEAKER_02]: But Sheriff Kane forbids Hal from joining the investigation, believing the case has no extraterrestrial connection.
10:35 --> 10:48 [SPEAKER_02]: Trying to get close to the suspect, I'll get some self-arrested for a bar fight, but the sheriff keeps him separated in jail until he is bailed out by lawyer and Carrie's husband, Billy Macon.
10:48 --> 10:58 [SPEAKER_02]: In return, how agrees to meet Carrie's father-in-law, William Macon Sr, who arranges for how to interrogate the suspect, Whalen Sanders.
10:58 --> 11:02 [SPEAKER_02]: During the interrogation, Hal exposes Sanders as an alien.
11:02 --> 11:09 [SPEAKER_02]: In retaliation, the alien detonates a bomb in his body, but Hal uses the last of his ring's power to contain the damage.
11:10 --> 11:26 [SPEAKER_02]: 10 years further on, in 2026, John Stuart returns to Rushville, where the Macon farm has fallen to rack and ruin, meanwhile back at the town's football stadium, Sheriff Kerry Cain shows him a dead and frozen Hal Jordan.
11:27 --> 11:29 [SPEAKER_02]: John notices something on his hand.
11:30 --> 11:32 [SPEAKER_02]: He's missing his green lantern ring.
11:33 --> 11:36 [SPEAKER_01]: The big mystery set up for the season of the year.
11:37 --> 11:37 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely.
11:38 --> 11:38 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, love.
11:40 --> 11:41 [SPEAKER_02]: Love the pattern of this.
11:41 --> 11:43 [SPEAKER_02]: I love the little 1996 to 2026 through 2016.
11:43 --> 11:45 [SPEAKER_02]: 2016 being the kind of the main portion of this episode.
11:57 --> 12:04 [SPEAKER_02]: John Stewart and certainly some of the key players at this moment in Rushville, Nebraska.
12:04 --> 12:12 [SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah, really, really kind of enjoyed the pattern of this opening episode.
12:12 --> 12:18 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and you just get the suspicion when you get to the end and it's gets to 20, 26, you go, hang on, second, I'm going to see any of those characters again.
12:18 --> 12:20 [SPEAKER_01]: And we're just taking all my notes for nothing.
12:20 --> 12:26 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure we'll see all of the big end and some form over the next, then of course the next couple of the weeks.
12:26 --> 12:29 [SPEAKER_01]: I love the idea that we could be spread again over those three time periods.
12:29 --> 12:32 [SPEAKER_01]: And more as well, there's a couple of other time periods mentioned as well.
12:33 --> 12:34 [SPEAKER_01]: in the first episode.
12:34 --> 12:40 [SPEAKER_01]: But what we're going to do, we're going to talk about our top three moments from the episode.
12:40 --> 12:43 [SPEAKER_01]: We always have a little twist on our top three points recalling them this time.
12:43 --> 12:47 [SPEAKER_01]: Instead of power points recalling them, power ring points for the episode.
12:47 --> 12:51 [SPEAKER_01]: So let's get on with our first power ring point number one.
12:58 --> 13:08 [SPEAKER_01]: It does sound like at the end doesn't know that's the ring of power, or the power ring with the howl uses as he conjures the bottle opener.
13:08 --> 13:09 [SPEAKER_01]: It does sound like a ghost.
13:09 --> 13:09 [SPEAKER_01]: It's not the lyser.
13:09 --> 13:10 [SPEAKER_01]: No.
13:15 --> 13:36 [SPEAKER_01]: know that that wouldn't have that wouldn't have made the same or a similar noise so I'm going to use that as our as our indication of the point so we're going to start off with our set up for the episode 1996 to 2016 and so this is the initial opening of the episode again this was released a couple of weeks ago as the kind of teaser or taster for the episode
13:37 --> 13:48 [SPEAKER_01]: And the setting of it really is in John Stuart's home with his brothers while they're sitting down in front of the TV to a 60-minute interview with Hal Jordan and Nenshin to the world who he is.
13:48 --> 13:57 [SPEAKER_01]: We hear a little bit of the backstory about who he is, where he comes from what he is, but the sister is something kind of mysterious going on with John Stuart's families.
13:57 --> 14:00 [SPEAKER_01]: And the kids seem to be really, really nervous about you.
14:01 --> 14:04 [SPEAKER_01]: is watching this program or is it watching TV at all when the dad's not at all?
14:05 --> 14:05 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, definitely.
14:06 --> 14:07 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I think that's it.
14:07 --> 14:15 [SPEAKER_02]: The kind of the interview with Hal Jordan is kind of, it's kind of path for the course almost.
14:16 --> 14:28 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's asking, you know, it was assaur you were afraid, and he says no, because anyone that's seen and their father die and no longer has anything to be afraid or any of their parents, you know?
14:29 --> 14:31 [SPEAKER_02]: And you, but you see his,
14:32 --> 14:37 [SPEAKER_02]: brothers being already nervous and then that his father arrives back home.
14:37 --> 14:47 [SPEAKER_02]: So you think immediately that this is almost an abusive relationship here because they're all on edge, you know, as brothers are telling him, you know, turn off the TV.
14:48 --> 14:52 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, we'll probably even turn it off before it gets to, you know, the big reveal of who how Jordan is.
14:52 --> 14:53 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
14:53 --> 14:53 [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
14:54 --> 15:08 [SPEAKER_02]: So, um, it's really intriguing because, I mean, ultimately, then we get this William Tell moment where his dad takes him out, puts an apple on his head and fires his hand revolver, um, at,
15:09 --> 15:10 [SPEAKER_02]: is at the apple.
15:10 --> 15:12 [SPEAKER_02]: It takes it off and says, are you afraid?
15:12 --> 15:14 [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, no, it's that.
15:15 --> 15:16 [SPEAKER_02]: It such isn't really angry.
15:16 --> 15:20 [SPEAKER_02]: It's just very, uh, matter of fact about the whole thing.
15:20 --> 15:22 [SPEAKER_02]: And once he's done it goes, well, let's go get a burger.
15:23 --> 15:23 [SPEAKER_02]: Um, so.
15:24 --> 15:34 [SPEAKER_02]: It's a really weird set of you, like, okay, he's not being violent towards them, but at the same time, he's literally just pointed a gun at his son and fired his apple.
15:34 --> 15:37 [SPEAKER_02]: So it must be very sure of his ability to do that.
15:37 --> 15:48 [SPEAKER_02]: I do like the fact that behind the young John Stuart, there are loads of bullet holes that look like, you know, the height indicators that people draw
15:52 --> 15:57 [SPEAKER_02]: This is the kidder's four foot, four foot, one, four foot, two, whatever.
15:57 --> 16:03 [SPEAKER_02]: And so as he's gotten older, so this is something that has been happening for quite a while.
16:03 --> 16:07 [SPEAKER_02]: And so actually the young John Stuart would be quite...
16:09 --> 16:13 [SPEAKER_02]: Okay with this to some experience or experience, definitely.
16:13 --> 16:20 [SPEAKER_02]: So I guess I wanted to really interesting kind of opener because I was like, what is going on here?
16:20 --> 16:20 [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
16:20 --> 16:26 [SPEAKER_01]: There was something that you pointed that out when we were watching the episode that bullet holds behind kind of growing with them and you know again,
16:26 --> 16:35 [SPEAKER_01]: watching it again after after he pointed it out it is interesting that it does seem to be bullet holes with John's growths because they're they're going along with John.
16:35 --> 16:46 [SPEAKER_01]: The other two kids are ones of a taller ones of a shorter than them so it does seem to be John as the one that's taken it side so again we don't know a huge amount about it this is the only see we see in the past and then when we do jump
16:46 --> 16:54 [SPEAKER_01]: to 2016, we see that John is now in training beside Hal, so he's standing beside Hal as his apprentice almost.
16:55 --> 17:00 [SPEAKER_01]: So it feels like there's a setting up the fact that John is being trained by his father to become a green lantern.
17:00 --> 17:06 [SPEAKER_01]: That's why he's asking that question of are you afraid to John exactly the same question that Hal Jordan was asked.
17:06 --> 17:09 [SPEAKER_01]: And the only question he was asked to get the green lantern ring.
17:09 --> 17:09 [SPEAKER_01]: So
17:10 --> 17:20 [SPEAKER_01]: There's some intrigue there that hopefully will see a bit more of the future as to why his father knows the question to ask, as to why he's prepping John for this role in 2016 and onwards, you know.
17:20 --> 17:37 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, an interesting thing is, is then when it cuts to 2016, where you suddenly have the older John Stuart getting picked up by Hal, and as now his training, as his, you know, apprentice, his sidekick, have you want to describe it?
17:37 --> 17:55 [SPEAKER_02]: um you do have a lovely moment where um you know he's like I'm late and he's like are you angry and he's like no sir and a little perturbed and he's like no sir and he says the more you say sir the more it sounds like f-viewed.
17:55 --> 18:23 [SPEAKER_02]: So immediately that this is a great adult show for sure, but interestingly as they're driving along, you have a bit of tension between these two months and I still haven't worn the ring, and so he takes off the ring, puts it on the counter, and sort of barrel rolls out the car as the car heads over and down the ravine, where John Stewart is having to grab the ring,
18:25 --> 18:27 [SPEAKER_02]: bring forth some kind of protection.
18:27 --> 18:31 [SPEAKER_02]: And he does that, but he does call his dad afterwards.
18:32 --> 18:37 [SPEAKER_02]: And this is where you see that he is, so his dad is still around.
18:37 --> 18:39 [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, I've just survived a car crash.
18:39 --> 18:40 [SPEAKER_02]: You try to kill me.
18:41 --> 18:47 [SPEAKER_02]: And you know, he's like, he's just trying, his dad is just saying, he's just trying to put you on tilt.
18:47 --> 18:53 [SPEAKER_02]: You need to be cool, you know, stay the course and the job is yours.
18:56 --> 18:58 [SPEAKER_02]: back even in 1996 a dad saw an opportunity of him.
19:03 --> 19:10 [SPEAKER_02]: maybe to train him with the characteristics as for being chosen as a clear mountain.
19:10 --> 19:13 [SPEAKER_02]: But equally at the moment, maybe technically he's not.
19:14 --> 19:16 [SPEAKER_02]: He is, yes, being trained.
19:16 --> 19:24 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, certainly in that extreme situation, he wore the green ring and he used it.
19:25 --> 19:27 [SPEAKER_02]: It is simply that he has been chosen
19:32 --> 19:54 [SPEAKER_01]: The Green Lanterns, if I understand that the Guardians of the Union of Britain is going to the other people that choose the Lanterns, he says it and again we have to kind of take it at face value for the moment because of these timeshifts, we'll probably see a bit more of that in the future but that's a really good point to you bring up because the interview on TV is a live interview on 60 minutes where Hal is talking about his experience and saying he was only
19:58 --> 20:14 [SPEAKER_01]: the debrief that happened at some point with Hal before them because he was green landed for about ten years it says in that initial conversation so he probably knows the background to it has been preparing his kid to grow up to become the green land and in case the opportunity comes up in the future.
20:15 --> 20:19 [SPEAKER_01]: But one other quick thing that I want to bring up that you've kind of mentioned there when Hal arrives and he keeps
20:20 --> 20:23 [SPEAKER_01]: Pressuring charm to find out whether it's angry or not.
20:23 --> 20:37 [SPEAKER_01]: I thought that was quite interesting given the show itself and given the lanterns and all of them being connected to moods The angry mood is the yellow ring which are traditionally the yellow lanterns, which are foes of the green light'sness
20:38 --> 20:52 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so yeah, so it's an extra yeah again very very basic knowledge of this and don't correct if you want to as I said to your thoughts of course our wonderful listeners please help us out with piece of these things together and what I just found it interesting that how was pushing John
20:53 --> 20:54 [SPEAKER_01]: towards being angry at him.
20:54 --> 21:06 [SPEAKER_01]: You know, he tells him, you know, I'd be pretty angry if I left you on your own for two weeks or that any information at all as to where I was turned up a little hungover this morning because I prevented a civil war and John's asking him, how did you do that?
21:06 --> 21:13 [SPEAKER_01]: He goes like the usual, well, you know how it is, a little diplomacy, a little punching and John's kind of going, I don't know how it is because you haven't told me anything about that at all.
21:13 --> 21:19 [SPEAKER_01]: We're off to a flying lesson, which is probably the first real lesson you're about to give him and the flying lesson turns out to be
21:19 --> 21:24 [SPEAKER_01]: him in a car flying off the edge of a cliff and having to work out a way out of the car.
21:24 --> 21:29 [SPEAKER_02]: But I love the fact that he's like, there's a, there's a taco stand three clones of the road.
21:30 --> 21:30 [SPEAKER_02]: I'll see you there.
21:31 --> 21:32 [SPEAKER_02]: He just barrel rolls out.
21:33 --> 21:34 [SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, you're right.
21:35 --> 21:44 [SPEAKER_02]: I think actually all the way through this, despite all his best efforts, you see how trying to ride up John Stewart and actually John Stewart is
21:49 --> 21:52 [SPEAKER_02]: No, it's not that he, it's not that he loses his cool.
21:52 --> 21:53 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, he is.
21:53 --> 22:05 [SPEAKER_02]: But that's what I mean, he's quite deliberate about how he responds to how children because he understands the difference of this, you know, deliberate intention.
22:06 --> 22:08 [SPEAKER_02]: to dial him up.
22:09 --> 22:17 [SPEAKER_02]: The time where he needs his father to calm down and it might be the reason why he calls him is where he survives the car crash.
22:17 --> 22:20 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, and he shouts it at hell's place.
22:20 --> 22:22 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, you try to kill me.
22:22 --> 22:23 [SPEAKER_02]: What are you doing?
22:23 --> 22:25 [SPEAKER_02]: John Stuart certainly is very measured with
22:32 --> 22:35 [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's in Rushville where he's asked, do you respect him?
22:36 --> 22:39 [SPEAKER_02]: Do you respect someone like that who literally just got handed something?
22:40 --> 22:42 [SPEAKER_02]: No training, like you're having to go through.
22:42 --> 22:48 [SPEAKER_02]: None of this, it's suddenly just falls in his lap and look at him.
22:48 --> 22:49 [SPEAKER_02]: Look how he treats you.
22:49 --> 22:51 [SPEAKER_02]: Do you respect someone like that?
22:51 --> 22:54 [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, well yeah, I do actually.
22:54 --> 22:54 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
22:54 --> 22:56 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, he's got a resolve about him.
22:57 --> 22:57 [SPEAKER_02]: And so,
23:00 --> 23:04 [SPEAKER_02]: I do think it's kind of an interesting relationship.
23:04 --> 23:05 [SPEAKER_02]: It's almost...
23:07 --> 23:33 [SPEAKER_02]: It's that apprenticeship where you might not actually like your boss, but you realize you're going to get a good job house with this, and you're going to get trained in the skills, except that the thing is, the training that John Stewart is guessing is with a very grumpy how, as we see in this opening sequence, and this becomes very apparent with
23:35 --> 23:47 [SPEAKER_02]: with John Stuart because you get to Hal Jordan's backup consciousness, suddenly materializing on the road as John Stuart's trying to get to the taco.
23:47 --> 23:48 [SPEAKER_02]: The taco stand.
23:48 --> 23:53 [SPEAKER_02]: And I do like the fact that holographic Hal Jordan is like, um,
23:54 --> 24:10 [SPEAKER_02]: wouldn't I have trained you on this and it's like yeah it's like well no you haven't wouldn't but you mean you don't know this wouldn't I have trained you on on on this I'll told you about that and all that I kind of I kind of like that and then it's like
24:11 --> 24:16 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, when were you last backed up as I was supposed to do it once a week, but this is from 10 years.
24:16 --> 24:22 [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, it's like, you kind of like going, you know, this is, you can imagine this, sorry.
24:22 --> 24:23 [SPEAKER_02]: That's what you're saying.
24:23 --> 24:36 [SPEAKER_02]: You can really imagine this sort of testing, John Stuart who, you know, looking back has been trained since he was a young kid with his dad shooting apples off his head.
24:36 --> 24:38 [SPEAKER_02]: And here's someone who's like,
24:39 --> 24:45 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he's just suddenly realized his supposed to sort of keep his records once a week.
24:46 --> 24:51 [SPEAKER_02]: He hasn't done it for the last 10 years, but he comes with then this message.
24:51 --> 25:00 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it's so interesting seeing this other version of Hal, and I think that version would have got on really well with John Sirus.
25:00 --> 25:02 [SPEAKER_01]: He would have trained him well, he would have set everything up.
25:03 --> 25:08 [SPEAKER_01]: Again, interesting that you point out and I'm don't know don't a missus in the shuffle of everything else.
25:08 --> 25:25 [SPEAKER_01]: It's going on in the episode John says to him He should have been backed up every week in case anything happens because again the premise of the whole Green Lantern story is The initial Lantern who for that sector came to earth handed over his ring to an earthling who's not supposed to be The Green Lantern the sector, but
25:25 --> 25:30 [SPEAKER_01]: He was chosen, Hal Jordan, and then eventually Hal Jordan will die and it will pass on to somebody else.
25:30 --> 25:35 [SPEAKER_01]: That's built in, that's baked into the story of the Green Lanterns, and this old version of John Stuart knew that.
25:36 --> 25:43 [SPEAKER_01]: This current version of John Stuart in 2016 thinks he's going to live forever and says, there's no chance you take it over from me.
25:43 --> 25:46 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not dying anytime soon, basically, that's why he's not training John Stuart.
25:47 --> 25:58 [SPEAKER_01]: So that's really interesting and also under the little touch there from how this all-diverst of how he appears as the hologram as a brilliantly named by John.
25:59 --> 26:05 [SPEAKER_01]: He says it's not normal for a lantern to be training a trainee from their own sector either.
26:05 --> 26:05 [SPEAKER_01]: So
26:06 --> 26:10 [SPEAKER_01]: you don't train the person that's coming up to take on the job from you in the future.
26:11 --> 26:19 [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe train someone from another sector to take on the lantern position over there, but you don't do that, and John here has been chosen to take over from them.
26:20 --> 26:23 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I like the interaction here where it's like,
26:24 --> 26:52 [SPEAKER_02]: um holographic how is well how do I know I can trust you um and he's like do we get along and you just have John's sugar we get on great yeah and you just why the face on it is really good but with that um he does get this message then there's hail in Rushville Nebraska which back at the taco stand after despite being you know swamped by fans in the
26:54 --> 27:10 [SPEAKER_02]: And you have, I like the fact that you've got a little moment where how approaches, you know, the tight suit that would be reminiscent of the comics and why he's not in some very tight
27:16 --> 27:26 [SPEAKER_02]: I know he's an older howl Jordan, but he says, well, I completely get him with the tie analogy, he says, you know, when you're young, you need to prove yourself.
27:26 --> 27:30 [SPEAKER_02]: So you put on a tie because you think people will respect you more.
27:30 --> 27:31 [SPEAKER_02]: You'll dress up smart.
27:32 --> 27:38 [SPEAKER_02]: As you get older, as you get wiser, you realise that ties just don't prove anything.
27:38 --> 27:42 [SPEAKER_02]: And that's all in response to being asked by the owner of the stand.
27:42 --> 27:44 [SPEAKER_02]: How come you don't wear the suit anymore?
27:44 --> 27:45 [SPEAKER_02]: Why don't you wear the leotas?
27:46 --> 27:47 [SPEAKER_02]: The green leotas.
27:47 --> 27:53 [SPEAKER_01]: This is a disenchanted and a disenfranchised version of how Jordan that we're seeing here.
27:53 --> 27:56 [SPEAKER_01]: His explanation that he's got here doesn't really ring true.
27:57 --> 27:59 [SPEAKER_01]: He can create whatever type of suit he wants to create.
27:59 --> 28:00 [SPEAKER_01]: That's the purpose.
28:00 --> 28:05 [SPEAKER_01]: The ability has with the lantern you can create anything within your imagination.
28:05 --> 28:08 [SPEAKER_01]: So he could just create a suit that fit better than he liked wearing.
28:09 --> 28:16 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't need to prove myself because everywhere I go, everybody knows who I am and I'm kind of tired of doing it almost as the feeling.
28:16 --> 28:27 [SPEAKER_01]: But I do wonder just a little bit of speculation again on why John Stewart is being trained by how or put in the position to be trained by how and I do wonder if
28:29 --> 28:44 [SPEAKER_01]: the armed forces, whoever it is that his father works for are concerned about how Jordan the untrained person with no ability to other than being someone that doesn't have fear and was a former test pilot, getting the abilities of the Green Lantern and they're trying to push.
28:44 --> 28:48 [SPEAKER_01]: John Stewart in the position to take over from before they take out how Jordan.
28:49 --> 28:56 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's an interesting point and John a person trained in the arm in the army What did this he's a former Air Force pilot or is he?
28:57 --> 28:58 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, certainly his fault.
28:58 --> 29:04 [SPEAKER_01]: There was in Marines and so he's military Yes, definitely military but that I'm wondering whether they were trying to
29:05 --> 29:11 [SPEAKER_01]: of course John Stewart as a controlled person in the position of how Jordan who isn't controllable as we see throughout this episode as well.
29:11 --> 29:12 [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
29:12 --> 29:19 [SPEAKER_02]: And there's actually quite a lot of those kind of touch points in this episode like in the court scene in Rushville where it's like,
29:21 --> 29:23 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, what agency are you from?
29:23 --> 29:23 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
29:23 --> 29:30 [SPEAKER_02]: And you have it with Sheriff Kerry Kane where she's like, well, this is my jurisdiction.
29:30 --> 29:31 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
29:31 --> 29:34 [SPEAKER_02]: And you only deal with extraterrestrials.
29:34 --> 29:34 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
29:34 --> 29:37 [SPEAKER_02]: And this by definition is a terrestrial incident is happening here.
29:38 --> 29:38 [SPEAKER_01]: on earth.
29:38 --> 29:40 [SPEAKER_01]: So that's kind of it, isn't it?
29:40 --> 29:41 [SPEAKER_01]: Like he doesn't represent any agency.
29:41 --> 29:46 [SPEAKER_01]: He is the agency responsible for dealing with any extraterrestrial threats.
29:46 --> 29:51 [SPEAKER_01]: It looks like he's gotten the jurisdiction to deal with anything as long as it is extraterrestrial.
29:51 --> 29:54 [SPEAKER_01]: I love that conversation with Kerry Kane, where she's saying, look,
29:54 --> 30:00 [SPEAKER_01]: everybody knows you are and the minute you're involved with this if you go in front of a TV camera then this becomes aliens intent.
30:01 --> 30:04 [SPEAKER_01]: I know all these people this will ruin their lives or change their lives forever.
30:04 --> 30:11 [SPEAKER_01]: Can I just get out of my investigation and then if it does turn out to be in your jurisdiction then you can have it but it's not going to this is just a simple situation.
30:11 --> 30:12 [SPEAKER_02]: They're agreed.
30:12 --> 30:17 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean and I think in amongst kind of a lot of this like
30:22 --> 30:26 [SPEAKER_02]: you just get told this message from the 10 year old.
30:26 --> 30:26 [SPEAKER_02]: How?
30:26 --> 30:31 [SPEAKER_02]: From John Stuart and he's like, pay the check and he just takes off flying.
30:31 --> 30:33 [SPEAKER_02]: And I have to say, I love this little montage.
30:33 --> 30:36 [SPEAKER_02]: I think this is what is really kind of great about this.
30:37 --> 30:39 [SPEAKER_02]: episodes.
30:39 --> 30:57 [SPEAKER_02]: You have him taking off and then you just have this montage of John Stuart I'm gonna get in a car, go to the airport, get the security on the flight, so back in the car and it's like six hours plus to get to Rushville where he's then you know on a football field
31:00 --> 31:18 [SPEAKER_02]: on the sidelines, in the stand with the other Shicer head, and effectively as Kerry Cain says, I love that little moment of her conversation with her deputy, and it just, like, not another one, you know, really like,
31:19 --> 31:36 [SPEAKER_02]: that they're still processing the scene but I love them that you have them both off the field and play sort of benched if you were in the stand by the sheriff of rushfield because you don't have jurisdiction here and you know
31:37 --> 31:45 [SPEAKER_02]: I kind of like then how that sets up how this plays out to be honest on the football field because I do think it's really good.
31:45 --> 32:05 [SPEAKER_02]: I've just like the touches that come through this of actually sort of the slightly younger, more impulsive John Stewart, but maybe the more nuanced, actually the Wiser how Jordan who realises a lot of the same stuff that actually
32:06 --> 32:10 [SPEAKER_02]: And Sheriff Kerry Kane also realized this and this notion that just because
32:12 --> 32:16 [SPEAKER_02]: other people on Green Lanterns doesn't mean say that they're not good in forces.
32:16 --> 32:17 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
32:17 --> 32:21 [SPEAKER_02]: And I loved how that played out just here in this stage.
32:21 --> 32:21 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
32:21 --> 32:23 [SPEAKER_01]: It's a great lesson to learn, isn't it?
32:23 --> 32:26 [SPEAKER_01]: The people around you can teach you a lot, just by their experience.
32:26 --> 32:36 [SPEAKER_01]: And there's definitely a reason why the Green Lantern, who flew here from another state, has sat there for six hours, respecting whilst the law enforcement officer was saying,
32:37 --> 32:47 [SPEAKER_01]: And John takes it that he's just not respecting the chain of commands so he needs to tell her all the information that he hasn't hurt in his head and he does and it turns out well she knew all that all the long in there.
32:47 --> 32:48 [SPEAKER_01]: He's really screwed up.
32:49 --> 32:51 [SPEAKER_01]: You know, so it's a good lesson to learn.
32:51 --> 32:52 [SPEAKER_01]: I really like that.
32:52 --> 33:00 [SPEAKER_01]: We'll move on to that a bit more in there in our next major point because that is the next major point of the episode, but I just want to talk about a couple of little things on the setup as well.
33:00 --> 33:05 [SPEAKER_01]: Last couple of things on the setup because one of the big things for the show is going to be how they use the ring.
33:05 --> 33:29 [SPEAKER_01]: And I'll say for myself, I'm a big comment book fan, big fan of the animated shows of all comic book types and one of the things that's always stood out to me about the Green Lantern stuff is the character himself as power is that he has the power to use his Lantern to create anything and I always find I bought up against when they put him in a cartoon and most of the time it's just a Green light and it's like a hammer.
33:29 --> 33:48 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it's just very rare that the animators maybe it's at very complex of course because you can do anything but it's very rare the animators in the past have chosen something really interesting to do with the character and it feels like you've got the entire imagination of everything available to you and they tend to just have the green lantern holding people back with a big green ball.
33:48 --> 34:01 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so or a hammer to a hammer as you are a big revolver yeah, but again, there's there's a couple of things but it seems to go into those, you know, two or three options But he can do absolutely anything so it felt like
34:03 --> 34:05 [SPEAKER_01]: In the show here, we've only seen them use it a few times.
34:05 --> 34:12 [SPEAKER_01]: We hear mentioned that John Stuart uses to create a bubble wrap for himself to stop himself from being hurt.
34:12 --> 34:16 [SPEAKER_01]: We see him using the big green bowl to stop an explosion later on.
34:17 --> 34:24 [SPEAKER_01]: But interestingly, we also see him creating a $20 bill to use on a jukebox, which is very funny and cold out immediately.
34:24 --> 34:28 [SPEAKER_01]: But John Stuart hang on a second to can create legal tender using it, I can create whatever I want to.
34:29 --> 34:45 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just really good and also a bit of a chas-up moment with even though he knows that the sheriff is married a bit of a chat-up moment with with chair of K when he arrives the beer gives a tour and then goes and then goes and creates the bottle opener with it Well, I think as well the context of that from
34:46 --> 34:58 [SPEAKER_02]: at the football stadium where you have John Stewart says, I think she hates your guts and he's like, how John's like, yeah, but it's the way she hates them.
34:59 --> 35:00 [SPEAKER_02]: Like, you really like it.
35:01 --> 35:09 [SPEAKER_02]: And so then you have this, this bottle opener moment where even when he gets rid of the bottle opener, he blows it as though it's dust.
35:09 --> 35:11 [SPEAKER_02]: And it's like, she's like, how cool am I?
35:13 --> 35:14 [SPEAKER_01]: He's so good.
35:14 --> 35:14 [SPEAKER_01]: He's so good.
35:14 --> 35:18 [SPEAKER_01]: I huge compliments for Kyle Chandler here playing Hal Jordan.
35:19 --> 35:32 [SPEAKER_01]: I've loved him for years from back in the day when he was in the early edition, which was a TV show that there's, I was of most people's memory by this stage, but also his in Friday night lights is probably where he's most well known, but he's been in the loads and that was the project.
35:32 --> 35:42 [SPEAKER_01]: but you see the real charming version of the character in the, I suppose, the flashback version of how Jordan you see this real grumpy older version of him here.
35:42 --> 35:49 [SPEAKER_01]: He just plays all of those different versions of himself really, really good and up against him with our peers as John Stewart's.
35:49 --> 35:50 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, where they work so well, it's all together.
35:50 --> 35:52 [SPEAKER_02]: I'm Kelly McDonald's here.
35:52 --> 35:54 [SPEAKER_02]: It's really, really good.
35:54 --> 35:55 [SPEAKER_02]: I love
35:57 --> 35:58 [SPEAKER_02]: I just loved her perspective.
35:59 --> 36:09 [SPEAKER_02]: I loved how she bought it up against Hal Jordan and sort of questioned why John Stuart was with him in a sense.
36:09 --> 36:11 [SPEAKER_02]: I just thought it was really, really good.
36:11 --> 36:12 [SPEAKER_02]: Great.
36:12 --> 36:12 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
36:13 --> 36:15 [SPEAKER_02]: The use of the ring so far is good.
36:15 --> 36:19 [SPEAKER_02]: And I know it's a green ball, but actually it's just a dampening field.
36:19 --> 36:40 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
36:45 --> 36:59 [SPEAKER_02]: I think the main one is we do have a really awkward situation which is also hilarious and again I'm just so glad they did this and it's done in a good way and we're
37:00 --> 37:09 [SPEAKER_02]: in the bar you have how Jordan wanting to get arrested is angling for a fight.
37:09 --> 37:17 [SPEAKER_02]: He's designing gears and setting it up by putting on the same tune so it annoys the locals and you have
37:18 --> 37:35 [SPEAKER_02]: And this lady at the bar, you kind of questioning her motives because she's just, you know, she's asking a few, you know, she's just asking a lot of questions of John Stewart, you know, well, how do you get to become a space cop?
37:35 --> 37:43 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, she's also kind of the next to them both whilst you really get how Jordan's
37:49 --> 38:11 [SPEAKER_02]: Handed this title of Green Lantern for this This sector by Abinsur It's sector 2814 after he's kind of crashed and because he's was a fighter pilot He kind of understood the bearing and the speed where he was taken to which was just outside of
38:12 --> 38:15 [SPEAKER_02]: this town in Rushville in Nebraska.
38:15 --> 38:17 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so that's the reason why we're here.
38:17 --> 38:18 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, 20 miles outside the town, roughly.
38:18 --> 38:18 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
38:19 --> 38:30 [SPEAKER_02]: So you have this, you know, a lot of information being done right in the asshot of of her and and he goes over then to sort of really get his plan interaction to get arrested.
38:30 --> 38:35 [SPEAKER_02]: So he sort of spent time in the jailhouse with the redneck
38:38 --> 38:47 [SPEAKER_02]: So they have their conversation and it finishes with my name, John, she goes, well, would you escort me to my car and they have this one nightstand out in the car?
38:47 --> 38:47 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
38:47 --> 38:47 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
38:48 --> 38:54 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, where he does a great thing with the ring, where he uses it as a lighter, which I never thought I would
38:54 --> 38:54 [SPEAKER_02]: see.
38:54 --> 38:57 [SPEAKER_01]: So again another good use of the ring.
38:58 --> 39:13 [SPEAKER_02]: But effectively later at the Macon family farm or ranch, he's helping Kelly's Sheriff Kerry Kane's son and to sort of throw his is
39:14 --> 39:30 [SPEAKER_02]: American football and then he gets introduced to the kids granny who is the same lady So we do have a gilf yes, and I guess or a G H L F I guess because I wouldn't be that interested both yes
39:32 --> 39:56 [SPEAKER_01]: But yes Zoe making I know it's really tempting when we see that word written down John to pronounce it in a kind of a French or Canadian way But there are they are proper made and home It's the makins yeah, and so really good really Adjusting what I do wonder I know the tropes would say that's when he returns to ten ten years later John that has a son By the granny here in the house, but
39:57 --> 39:58 [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's going to happen.
39:58 --> 40:15 [SPEAKER_01]: I do wonder about that and will that play into the story about the fact that he slept with the mother-in-law of the sheriff because there is a moment with William Sr. where we realize that he knows about the fact that they slept together.
40:15 --> 40:20 [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, it's going to be an interesting one in one of the interesting moments as well.
40:20 --> 40:23 [SPEAKER_02]: So quickly, I do, you know, William,
40:23 --> 40:33 [SPEAKER_02]: Makein' he does say there's nothing better than eating off another man's grill to John Stuart.
40:33 --> 40:39 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, in terms of letting him know that he knows that he as had a one night stand for this wife.
40:40 --> 40:41 [SPEAKER_02]: And I do like House.
40:42 --> 40:44 [SPEAKER_02]: It responds where he's like,
40:46 --> 40:47 [SPEAKER_02]: What was all that about?
40:47 --> 40:48 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, did you sleep with that?
40:48 --> 40:52 [SPEAKER_02]: He's like, yeah, I kind of, and then he's like, I definitely slept with his wife.
40:52 --> 40:56 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he's like, Jesus, I'm impressed.
40:56 --> 40:57 [SPEAKER_02]: We've only been here 24 hours.
40:58 --> 41:03 [SPEAKER_01]: How many did you do that go into a town that you don't know anybody in you that they even point out a small town.
41:03 --> 41:04 [SPEAKER_01]: Everybody here's connected.
41:04 --> 41:06 [SPEAKER_01]: You don't go into town, sleep with somebody you don't know.
41:06 --> 41:09 [SPEAKER_01]: And then, especially if we're gonna be investigating the town of
41:10 --> 41:16 [SPEAKER_01]: population 50 probably, and so maybe a bit more than that, but yeah, really bad idea.
41:16 --> 41:19 [SPEAKER_01]: So that's probably going to be the last we can, and there's kind of situations.
41:20 --> 41:23 [SPEAKER_01]: It probably will have some implications that will be the last thing.
41:24 --> 41:28 [SPEAKER_01]: Let's get on to our second para-ring point, para-ring point number two.
41:36 --> 41:50 [SPEAKER_01]: I might take off that last little bit, so it doesn't sound so much like a helpful being struck, because it probably was, it was probably the fully people designed in that sound going, that sounds like the appearance of something I should know where a golf ball being struck.
41:51 --> 42:05 [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, our second point is the alien invasion because that is the body of the episode, and so the big central piece of the episode is the go-to-make-and-ratch, John Stewart, and how Jordan kind of under the
42:07 --> 42:10 [SPEAKER_01]: premise of chatting with the person that bailed highlights.
42:11 --> 42:17 [SPEAKER_01]: But there's some big discussions going on here that we really should be focusing on, I think, from this episode again.
42:17 --> 42:22 [SPEAKER_01]: We're only seeing this episode just like I believe else we're not looking at previews, so we don't know what's happening in the series itself.
42:22 --> 42:23 [SPEAKER_01]: But
42:23 --> 42:30 [SPEAKER_01]: we know that the people that are on the ranch seem kind of malicious like they're all in training with their weapons.
42:30 --> 42:33 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think this is what happened in every single ranch America.
42:33 --> 42:40 [SPEAKER_01]: So it seems like they are focused on something here in the conversation with the William Mayconceneer.
42:41 --> 42:50 [SPEAKER_01]: Seems to indicate they have a, have a similar perspective, or at least they think they do to how Jordan abate the presence of alien on our alien's on earth.
42:50 --> 42:57 [SPEAKER_01]: Play wonderfully here by Guarital Hunt from Fear of the Walking Dead, one of the best characters on that show, who chose to go there.
42:57 --> 42:58 [SPEAKER_01]: That's quick, there's a good.
43:00 --> 43:03 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, before it went to really bad habit, that he was there for about five seasons.
43:04 --> 43:05 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely.
43:06 --> 43:11 [SPEAKER_01]: It's great here as the kind of leader of this group.
43:11 --> 43:16 [SPEAKER_01]: But interestingly, he says that the ranch that's there, he's the caretaker of the ranch, not the owner of the ranch.
43:17 --> 43:20 [SPEAKER_02]: Um, yeah, I mean, all of this is really interesting.
43:20 --> 43:25 [SPEAKER_02]: It's really intriguing as they drive up to the American family ranch.
43:25 --> 43:31 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's heavily fortified lots of guns around this kind of militia and training type of thing.
43:32 --> 43:36 [SPEAKER_02]: It was immediately, it's just like certainly in maybe the current circumstances.
43:36 --> 43:40 [SPEAKER_02]: You're like, going, okay, what's going on here?
43:40 --> 43:42 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I do like that you have William.
43:44 --> 43:49 [SPEAKER_02]: making, kind of saying, you know, I'm not a whack-a-do isolationist as you quote.
43:50 --> 43:52 [SPEAKER_02]: This isn't about having a beef with the feds.
43:53 --> 44:02 [SPEAKER_02]: It is about the aliens, and he gives that sort of moment where he says, you know, no matter which size you're on.
44:02 --> 44:05 [SPEAKER_02]: colonizing is ugly from any angle.
44:06 --> 44:10 [SPEAKER_02]: But particularly bleak if you're the one being colonized.
44:10 --> 44:26 [SPEAKER_02]: So making huge reference here to the indigenous American population to the white colonialism of the USA, of Spain, of Britain, of France, in North America.
44:26 --> 44:28 [SPEAKER_02]: But this is about aliens.
44:31 --> 44:47 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's that classic where the bugs on their shoes, where the outposts, and actually you've heard this from how early in this is like some kind of backwater of the galaxy or if it has real no has no real interest much.
44:48 --> 44:51 [SPEAKER_02]: for the guardians in some respects.
44:51 --> 44:53 [SPEAKER_02]: So that's what keeps being mentioned.
44:53 --> 44:57 [SPEAKER_01]: Or for anybody that gets it's for any alien species.
44:57 --> 44:57 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
44:57 --> 45:05 [SPEAKER_01]: As he says in response to this conversation with William McIntyre, he's saying to him, you know, it's been actually a pretty peaceful place.
45:05 --> 45:06 [SPEAKER_01]: It's not a huge amount of attacks.
45:06 --> 45:08 [SPEAKER_01]: William's going to go, but what if there is?
45:08 --> 45:09 [SPEAKER_01]: What if there is going to be an attack here?
45:09 --> 45:11 [SPEAKER_01]: We need to kind of do something about it.
45:11 --> 45:16 [SPEAKER_01]: So it seems like they're setting up some kind of force to stop a potentially attack from happening.
45:16 --> 45:20 [SPEAKER_02]: And as he said, he says, well, then why do we need space cops?
45:21 --> 45:33 [SPEAKER_02]: He also says, you know, I think are in trust to line because he believes that this redneck that was caught at the football stadium is also an alien.
45:34 --> 45:42 [SPEAKER_02]: And of course, he can't say anything because he has this NDA and it comes out in a really nice little moment where he's telling how, well,
45:44 --> 45:46 [SPEAKER_02]: carry will grant you access to the suspect.
45:47 --> 45:52 [SPEAKER_02]: Now that our interests are aligned, and he says, but what are your interests?
45:52 --> 46:03 [SPEAKER_02]: Because I don't know, and you know, it's like he said to his son, to Billy Macan, is like, normally when people give me lots of money, and such as the 200
46:11 --> 46:26 [SPEAKER_02]: flagging that these old bad guys, and even you have, as they arrive at the branch, and you have moments with Kerry Kane where, you know, you've got, well,
46:27 --> 46:32 [SPEAKER_02]: My father-in-law has paper on you, and he's not a man that you want to owe.
46:32 --> 46:38 [SPEAKER_02]: I do like how the sort of bite-back to where he goes, that sounds like a woman in debt.
46:39 --> 46:43 [SPEAKER_02]: And such great, that's a really nice bit of writing for me to love that.
46:44 --> 47:07 [SPEAKER_01]: And even like when she what she says to me know we're at the moment where you can turn back every moment from this moment on where is the point where you're stuck here you're in the situation Yeah, but from now on or from from here back you can turn around and go and leave, but you will question why you ever came here and we'll see later on maybe maybe he does so that you know this is this is all really Massively intriguing
47:09 --> 47:25 [SPEAKER_02]: ultimately seemingly aligned with how Jordan, but also really murky with the NDA, even whilst they seem to be enjoying one another's company at this barbecue.
47:25 --> 47:28 [SPEAKER_02]: But again, there's also you know, a bit of, uh,
47:29 --> 47:51 [SPEAKER_02]: ownership here with the fact that yeah because everyone knows everyone how is actually before you even go into this barbecue is interacted with the dorsion law, the son who's who's the lawyer and has been bailed out by this guy who has a lot of guns on his ranch and absolutely believes in aliens and that there are issues for this area that
47:53 --> 47:56 [SPEAKER_02]: how also believes in, and is the reason why it's there.
47:56 --> 47:59 [SPEAKER_02]: So this is, I really enjoyed this.
47:59 --> 48:15 [SPEAKER_02]: And as I was saying before, where he tells the story of how he was brought around 20 miles away from Rushville by Abhin Sir when he was made his, his replacement as the Greenlands and for the
48:20 --> 48:27 [SPEAKER_02]: And this holographic reminder, effectively, this hail in Rushville, right?
48:27 --> 48:29 [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes, it's like a monitor case.
48:30 --> 48:40 [SPEAKER_01]: In case someone, something happens here because, as he says, it's a really good location for an alien spacecraft to crash because nobody noticed it when he, when it crashed back then.
48:40 --> 48:42 [SPEAKER_01]: So they may not notice another one.
48:42 --> 48:45 [SPEAKER_01]: So maybe it'd be a good place for an invasion to begin as well.
48:45 --> 48:45 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
48:46 --> 48:49 [SPEAKER_01]: Right, so let's talk a little bit about that itself, the alien invasion.
48:49 --> 49:12 [SPEAKER_01]: So, as you say, Hal's granted access to talk to this alien known as Whalen, who's in there, he's given the opportunity to have a discussion or an interrogation with him, but as told he can't use any of his paras on him, he's not led to punch him, he's not led to hit him, he's not led to do anything to him, and he says, well, I'll make him confess and just five minutes basically.
49:12 --> 49:17 [SPEAKER_01]: We hear a little bit of the story as well, and I'm not really too sure whether I get exactly what happened.
49:17 --> 49:29 [SPEAKER_01]: It sounds like there was a football match going on, some rival teams were involved, the local team were there, some of the rival's went on to the pitch and all died in a shoot-ax.
49:31 --> 49:35 [SPEAKER_01]: But was it at the hands of this guy, well, and did he shoot the people that were there?
49:35 --> 49:37 [SPEAKER_02]: Or not, I'm not sure whether that was the case?
49:37 --> 49:42 [SPEAKER_02]: Like John Stewart's asked to kind of describe the scene by how, you know, what happens.
49:42 --> 49:46 [SPEAKER_02]: And so you have this kind of, it's almost like forensic procedural that John Stewart gets into.
49:46 --> 49:47 [SPEAKER_02]: It's very cool.
49:47 --> 49:51 [SPEAKER_02]: Where he says, you know, it looks like,
49:52 --> 50:12 [SPEAKER_02]: Rushville, who were playing against Kimball, a rival team from two hours away, and they scored a late winner at the crowd swells, and went on to the pitch, and members of Kimball's away or travelling fans also went on.
50:13 --> 50:17 [SPEAKER_02]: And this ended up with a number of them being shot.
50:21 --> 50:37 [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm suspecting it's coming from the Macon militia in some respect if he believes that that man is an alien maybe he also knew something around why and why he killed these people maybe so
50:38 --> 50:40 [SPEAKER_02]: because they were also aliens.
50:40 --> 50:52 [SPEAKER_02]: What we do find out here is that there's about 14 alien species that can't be identified as alien from medical tests on Earth.
50:52 --> 50:54 [SPEAKER_02]: And so this
51:04 --> 51:31 [SPEAKER_01]: Kerry Kane certainly thinks how's got the wrong end of the stick here and she you know but it's a great little moment that the point out that nobody in town knows who any of the dead people are yes and all says it's very mellow for a match you yeah isn't it so it's only members of the the supporters for the other team but even the other team don't know who the people were yeah exactly to support them at this this ten two hours away which is just
51:33 --> 51:42 [SPEAKER_01]: So how sets about his interior get in the way he does to find out whether he's an engineer or not because he's not really that interested in the shooting Can I just say about the initial session?
51:42 --> 51:42 [SPEAKER_02]: Sure, of course.
51:42 --> 51:53 [SPEAKER_02]: And because I do like the fact that you know Classic softening him up or in terms of that good cop, where he's offers him a coffee But he says
51:53 --> 51:55 [SPEAKER_02]: I imagine you want to phone home.
51:57 --> 51:59 [SPEAKER_02]: I get home, I mean, I love that little E.T.
52:00 --> 52:12 [SPEAKER_02]: reference right off the bat, and then after that, he starts quizzing him about his love of football, U.S. president, Harry Potter, you name it as, eh.
52:13 --> 52:35 [SPEAKER_02]: you know, he's trying to sort of really make the point that, yes, you know, a lot about football, and but you seemingly are relatively nonchalant around Barack Obama for someone from small town of Nebraska, and where the president has got some kind of controversy over his passport.
52:35 --> 52:36 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
52:36 --> 52:40 [SPEAKER_02]: And well, look, Harry Potter was the boy wizard.
52:42 --> 52:44 [SPEAKER_02]: So I kind of like how it plays out.
52:44 --> 52:47 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, and I'm very smart of HBO to mention Harry Potter.
52:47 --> 52:51 [SPEAKER_01]: They're coming to TV shows, of course, on HBO next year.
52:51 --> 52:53 [SPEAKER_01]: So everybody should know about that character, of course.
52:53 --> 52:55 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but I like that.
52:55 --> 52:56 [SPEAKER_01]: That's the point, isn't it?
52:57 --> 53:19 [SPEAKER_01]: he's finding out that this alien has been able to learn a ton of stuff about the thing that he's supposed to be focused on because those are the kind of questions you'll be asked about the truck that you came there in, about the 10 year from, about the distance between the two of them, about football or your football fan, the travel to a minor league gamer, a college football game, well then you must know loads about
53:19 --> 53:38 [SPEAKER_01]: NFL as well as college football games, tell us all about it right and so that's really smart and then the twist is he doesn't know anything about the standard stuff that every average American would know about pub culture and he gives him a couple of opportunities exactly to say not only is it about Harry Potter because not everybody would know about Harry Potter but people would know about the president and
53:38 --> 53:47 [SPEAKER_01]: in 2016, they would know a lot more detail than he had some kind of issues with this with as a Brit certificate and they'd have an opinion about it not only that.
53:47 --> 53:48 [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly exactly exactly.
53:48 --> 54:00 [SPEAKER_02]: And I love as well that whilst this is playing out, the opinions are very much coming from Kerry, Sheriff Kerry Kane in the little booth who's just in awe about how full of himself
54:07 --> 54:10 [SPEAKER_02]: he respects him and he's like, yes, I do.
54:10 --> 54:11 [SPEAKER_02]: He's fearless.
54:11 --> 54:13 [SPEAKER_02]: And she's like, he's not fearless.
54:14 --> 54:15 [SPEAKER_02]: He's lonely, you know?
54:15 --> 54:23 [SPEAKER_02]: And so I like that all there's a lot of opinions coming from the booth that how isn't aware of as well.
54:24 --> 54:26 [SPEAKER_01]: And it's not just lonely, he doesn't care about anybody.
54:26 --> 54:31 [SPEAKER_01]: If you cared about one person, you would have feared that person would be gone the way that she describes it.
54:31 --> 54:32 [SPEAKER_01]: So that's really interesting.
54:33 --> 54:33 [SPEAKER_01]: But
54:33 --> 55:00 [SPEAKER_01]: it turns out he's right and the conversation is really interesting from this wail in alien who's basically saying well what if I am yeah I love the fact that he's yeah as you say it's like what if hypothetically I am an alien and he just starts reeling off the hypothetically yes i love it exactly well i wouldn't be here for peace because well you're the peace protectors of the galaxy so i'd want to avoid being anywhere
55:03 --> 55:06 [SPEAKER_01]: namely war for vengeance.
55:07 --> 55:08 [SPEAKER_01]: Really, really interesting.
55:08 --> 55:11 [SPEAKER_01]: So did he kill as you speculated earlier on?
55:11 --> 55:19 [SPEAKER_01]: The other people that were on the picture, they aliens and he was out to kill them so that they didn't reveal the plot of the potential war that's coming.
55:19 --> 55:21 [SPEAKER_01]: Is there a potential war coming even?
55:21 --> 55:22 [SPEAKER_01]: You know, just watch the speculation here.
55:23 --> 55:40 [SPEAKER_01]: boarded all turns into a moment of effectively his gas, a weapon of mass destruction attached to his bones attached to his skeleton, his gas, a biometric neutron device, which he can control with his mind, but we thought it was exploding because it's close to lunchtime.
55:41 --> 55:45 [SPEAKER_01]: But he can't stop the beeping, like it would have an any kind of bar model.
55:45 --> 55:49 [SPEAKER_01]: That's the indication because beeping's really bad, and that he's about to explode.
55:49 --> 55:53 [SPEAKER_01]: So how does he maintain him using the powers of his green lantern ring?
55:53 --> 56:04 [SPEAKER_01]: And just an interesting question that I had after this in the conversation between Wellen and Howl when I was saying, well, if you explode, I'll just continue with the ring with the pair of my ring.
56:05 --> 56:09 [SPEAKER_01]: He says, well, you've been here a couple of days to bring your lantern with you to charge up the ring.
56:10 --> 56:19 [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm not sure what house reaction to that was, whether he does have the lantern, was he handed over the lantern when he got the pair off from heaven, and so or is this the first time he's heard about the lantern?
56:20 --> 56:24 [SPEAKER_01]: But maybe not because he's traveling to space, so I'm sure he's been here for ten years.
56:24 --> 56:35 [SPEAKER_01]: But he basically jumped up from that table that the opening of the episode flew across state lines to get here because of the warning that he got, didn't bring anything with him.
56:35 --> 56:43 [SPEAKER_01]: But it's 20 years in fact, yes, but no, I mean, did he arrive there without the lantern to pair themself up?
56:43 --> 56:43 [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe.
56:43 --> 56:46 [SPEAKER_01]: You know, so if anything had gone really badly here.
56:47 --> 57:06 [SPEAKER_01]: this could have been the last thing that he was able to do there by protecting the tan from this explosion that could have wiped out the whole tan is the speculation at least that's that whale in a saying so uh how was kind of um what will be the where he was kind of uh pretty pretty risky uh to go to the tan in case uh he needed a bit more power um
57:07 --> 57:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, but I was later.
57:09 --> 57:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
57:09 --> 57:13 [SPEAKER_02]: I suspect it's a good battery life on the charge up, but I don't know.
57:14 --> 57:14 [SPEAKER_02]: That's the thing.
57:14 --> 57:16 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't know if I need to know.
57:17 --> 57:18 [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's just every so often.
57:18 --> 57:26 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, it's it's a good reminder because and he does need to get the charge up from the land.
57:26 --> 57:26 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
57:26 --> 57:44 [SPEAKER_01]: In the same way that you have the set-up for a Superman can do absolutely anything unless the script and either end The set-up here for the Lansing says they could do absolutely anything in their imagination Both it is powered and does need to be recharged With the lantern, but on how didn't bring it with them, which is the interesting part there as well.
57:44 --> 57:44 [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah
57:45 --> 57:47 [SPEAKER_01]: So we will see how that plays out with us.
57:47 --> 57:49 [SPEAKER_02]: We haven't seen the lantern at all.
57:49 --> 58:01 [SPEAKER_01]: We haven't in this share so far And we also didn't hear the oath of the lanterns until it was spoken by Whale and here in a really Jokey kind of way like
58:01 --> 58:02 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, the wind up.
58:02 --> 58:04 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
58:04 --> 58:21 [SPEAKER_01]: I was saying to John one of the things that I'm sure lanterns fans wanted to hear in a TV show and they want to hear in the movie is the oath being spoken by the characters because it's so central to the characters that they they say this oath before doing a massive act.
58:21 --> 58:25 [SPEAKER_01]: And here it's spoken by the bad guy of the episode in a really disparaging way.
58:27 --> 58:47 [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm really glad that they chose that as the way to deliver it for the first time to deliver the Lanternouth because you can't see really odd when not in the comic book, when it's in the comic book, you read it whatever way you read it, you read through it, you know what it is, the minute it starts, so you can just pass over it, you know what they're going to say basically.
58:47 --> 58:50 [SPEAKER_01]: But that's where they have to deliver in TV show and choosing to deliver through
58:51 --> 58:56 [SPEAKER_01]: effectively taking the piss out of how Jordan worked really well for me.
58:56 --> 59:07 [SPEAKER_02]: I think the context of it at the end of his hypothetical statement in a sense to how Jordan is really good because like you say
59:08 --> 59:22 [SPEAKER_02]: he's talking about the exact opposite of it is as you know what if I am an alien what if I am an alien that has studied or the arcane rules of football that captivates everyone on this world more than their deteriorating atmosphere.
59:23 --> 59:43 [SPEAKER_02]: or the hungry of this world, you know, if I've gone to such lengths to hide myself, if I'm hypothetical, you know, it's very important and sensitive reason and goal to keep hidden from a galactic organization like yours that's intent on peace as it concerns the opposite.
59:43 --> 59:45 [SPEAKER_02]: of that being war.
59:46 --> 59:51 [SPEAKER_02]: And it says, you know, with how why you hear why else vengeance.
59:51 --> 01:00:04 [SPEAKER_02]: And then you have the opposite of that, which is this proposition that the guardians have, you know, their mission and being recounted to them by this guy who's basically saying,
01:00:05 --> 01:00:07 [SPEAKER_02]: I am the opposite of what you are.
01:00:08 --> 01:00:17 [SPEAKER_02]: So it is, I think it's just a really, it's just a fresh way and all of doing it and it puts it into a more sinister content.
01:00:17 --> 01:00:19 [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly, and I think that's really good.
01:00:19 --> 01:00:19 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, exactly.
01:00:20 --> 01:00:24 [SPEAKER_01]: That's kind of the majority of the alien invasion part of this episode.
01:00:24 --> 01:00:32 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure that's going to be one of the big things that we'll play for the rest of the season, but let's go on to our power ring point number three for our final big moments.
01:00:37 --> 01:00:38 [SPEAKER_01]: the three wood.
01:00:39 --> 01:00:44 [SPEAKER_01]: So the episode ends in 2026 or our final point is the mystery.
01:00:45 --> 01:00:49 [SPEAKER_01]: John Stewart is called back to the ten of Rushville.
01:00:50 --> 01:00:55 [SPEAKER_01]: We see him going driving through past the former Maken Ranch.
01:00:55 --> 01:00:57 [SPEAKER_01]: It's fallen to complete Rack and Ruin, haven't it?
01:00:57 --> 01:01:00 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's really interesting.
01:01:00 --> 01:01:07 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, one of the things that we were saying as they are proached for the barbecue, what's above the gate?
01:01:07 --> 01:01:07 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
01:01:08 --> 01:01:12 [SPEAKER_02]: And I think, you know, we kind of thought it said study the past.
01:01:12 --> 01:01:14 [SPEAKER_02]: At absolutely what it says, I'm sure.
01:01:14 --> 01:01:14 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
01:01:14 --> 01:01:15 [SPEAKER_02]: on the gate.
01:01:16 --> 01:01:32 [SPEAKER_02]: So, be interesting if that has any sort of meaning for any of this, but yeah, the mystery side of this, even just the atmosphere of, you know, John Stuart driving to Rushville in the snow going as a day going past his desolate sort of gatehouse.
01:01:32 --> 01:01:39 [SPEAKER_02]: It'd been there previously as he meets, you know, the sheriff in town, but it feels really atmospheric.
01:01:39 --> 01:01:42 [SPEAKER_02]: It's at night, you know, you have the snow coming
01:01:44 --> 01:01:50 [SPEAKER_02]: kind of like this introduction to the present day within this episode.
01:01:50 --> 01:01:56 [SPEAKER_01]: And the big moment really, it's back in the same football stand that they were in back in 2016.
01:01:57 --> 01:02:01 [SPEAKER_01]: There's definitely a moment between Sheriff Canaan and John Stewart.
01:02:01 --> 01:02:08 [SPEAKER_01]: They haven't seen each other in a while, but their friends now, after what happened back in 2016 definitely, but maybe another couple of moments over the course of the last.
01:02:08 --> 01:02:17 [SPEAKER_01]: a couple of years and he's been called because how Jordan's body has been found pretty much in the same place he was back in 2016.
01:02:17 --> 01:02:22 [SPEAKER_01]: The only person that knows about it is the caretaker, but he's there with a bullet hole in his hat.
01:02:22 --> 01:02:25 [SPEAKER_01]: And the body is dead.
01:02:25 --> 01:02:31 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm seemingly frozen, it's covered in snow, as I say, just the sort of the
01:02:32 --> 01:02:41 [SPEAKER_02]: frozen blood on his hair, and but importantly there is no ring on his finger.
01:02:41 --> 01:02:45 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, the green lantern ring is not anywhere to be seen here.
01:02:45 --> 01:02:47 [SPEAKER_01]: And two important things about that.
01:02:47 --> 01:02:51 [SPEAKER_01]: Number one, John Sturis drove into ten and wasn't where the ring to come in here.
01:02:51 --> 01:02:52 [SPEAKER_01]: He didn't fly in.
01:02:53 --> 01:02:55 [SPEAKER_01]: And secondly he doesn't have the ring.
01:02:55 --> 01:02:57 [SPEAKER_01]: So the ring didn't go to John Sturis when how died.
01:02:57 --> 01:02:58 [SPEAKER_01]: It died,
01:02:59 --> 01:03:00 [SPEAKER_01]: what you'd expect.
01:03:00 --> 01:03:09 [SPEAKER_01]: If Hal Jordan is there, and he's been killed, uh, you'd expect his screen lantern ring to disappear off to the next person chosen, which was supposed to be John Stuart.
01:03:09 --> 01:03:10 [SPEAKER_01]: So why didn't this?
01:03:11 --> 01:03:13 [SPEAKER_01]: Is this Hal Jordan's actual body?
01:03:14 --> 01:03:19 [SPEAKER_01]: Is it an alien posing as the human held Jordan to say he's under threat in 2026?
01:03:19 --> 01:03:21 [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's that, maybe that's the best possible thing.
01:03:21 --> 01:03:21 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
01:03:22 --> 01:03:27 [SPEAKER_01]: Is that the final time Cal, Chandler's going to be appearing in the show and how Jordan won't be in the show at all?
01:03:28 --> 01:03:28 [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe.
01:03:29 --> 01:03:32 [SPEAKER_02]: Will he be there as the hologram?
01:03:33 --> 01:03:36 [SPEAKER_01]: Or as you've written down the howogram?
01:03:36 --> 01:03:37 [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I don't think it's John Stewart said it.
01:03:37 --> 01:03:39 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not saying it's like any hologram.
01:03:39 --> 01:03:39 [SPEAKER_01]: I missed that.
01:03:44 --> 01:03:49 [SPEAKER_01]: It's the moment of the part of the fire when John Stuart asked him so I had the hologram in front of me and how it goes.
01:03:49 --> 01:03:52 [SPEAKER_01]: That's really smart, he goes like, yeah, he goes not that smart.
01:03:52 --> 01:03:55 [SPEAKER_02]: That's a nice time, is that long?
01:03:55 --> 01:03:59 [SPEAKER_01]: So our wonder will we just seek out Chandler in flashbacks and this set up to this?
01:03:59 --> 01:04:05 [SPEAKER_01]: What happened between when he got the Paris in the 80s up until 1996 to rent this town?
01:04:05 --> 01:04:06 [SPEAKER_01]: Because that's where he got the Paris?
01:04:06 --> 01:04:08 [SPEAKER_02]: Is the whole season a flashback?
01:04:08 --> 01:04:29 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, is it also really going to lead to this point where we're being shown the end result of something and or at least, you know, till maybe half half the way or three courses the way through and you then have the dealing with the consequences of finding how Jordan ringless and
01:04:31 --> 01:04:51 [SPEAKER_01]: frozen and dead in a small town football stadium or as I say maybe as it literally just kept up with us while we were sitting here or as I say will Hal Jordan arrive with his green lantern ring from outer space when he was off at another adventure and he's been around all the time and this is an alien taking on his form.
01:04:51 --> 01:04:52 [SPEAKER_01]: We know aliens can look like humans.
01:04:53 --> 01:04:53 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
01:04:53 --> 01:04:57 [SPEAKER_01]: 14 different species can cover themselves up like that.
01:04:57 --> 01:05:02 [SPEAKER_01]: So maybe somebody's saying there's a thrash in his life and we'll just see Kyle Chandler next episode of the hell Jordan.
01:05:02 --> 01:05:06 [SPEAKER_01]: We don't know because we have the next episode coming out next week.
01:05:06 --> 01:05:10 [SPEAKER_01]: As the way all good TV shows do, exactly.
01:05:10 --> 01:05:12 [SPEAKER_01]: Is there any notes for the episode?
01:05:12 --> 01:05:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Anything else you want to talk about about the episode that we didn't talk about in our major points, John?
01:05:17 --> 01:05:37 [SPEAKER_02]: May one for me is, because he's getting everywhere at the moment, but we see Carrie Christopher here who plays the young Noah, my mom, and who introduces John Stuart to his granny, and that he still hasn't, and, you know, he's unaware of the birds and the bees and what's been going on between the two of them.
01:05:38 --> 01:05:56 [SPEAKER_02]: So he's the sheriff's son, but yeah, this to me is the weapons and the green lantern crossover and indeed the spider-no-all crossover that I didn't know I needed So it's been a really sort of big year for him really these different properties and and you know
01:05:57 --> 01:06:02 [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure, unless again, he's in flashback, or they've given him a huge amounts of growth hormone.
01:06:02 --> 01:06:17 [SPEAKER_02]: And because, you know, at right at the end, despite, you know, Jon Stewart having just gone to see the dead body of Hal Jordan, that the one bit where you realize, you know, he's kept in
01:06:25 --> 01:06:26 [SPEAKER_02]: all states.
01:06:26 --> 01:06:27 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, uh, Colisey.
01:06:27 --> 01:06:30 [SPEAKER_01]: So, um, so we'll see an apple version in a way.
01:06:30 --> 01:06:31 [SPEAKER_01]: We'll see.
01:06:31 --> 01:06:31 [SPEAKER_01]: I'll see.
01:06:31 --> 01:06:31 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
01:06:32 --> 01:06:33 [SPEAKER_01]: But I think you're right to point today.
01:06:33 --> 01:06:36 [SPEAKER_01]: The Carrie Christopher, again, been in so many big projects.
01:06:36 --> 01:06:39 [SPEAKER_01]: He was the lead, uh, kid in weapons.
01:06:39 --> 01:06:41 [SPEAKER_01]: So he was in most scenes in that movie.
01:06:42 --> 01:06:43 [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, and he was inspired in a way.
01:06:43 --> 01:06:47 [SPEAKER_01]: And we felt when we were covering to write a word, which was the last full show that we covered this year.
01:06:47 --> 01:06:50 [SPEAKER_01]: We felt his role had been cost a bit from that show.
01:06:50 --> 01:06:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Because he was in about two or three episodes in a bit of a supporting role.
01:06:53 --> 01:06:54 [SPEAKER_01]: But you felt that
01:06:55 --> 01:06:58 [SPEAKER_01]: Moment when you could have seen a lot more of the character.
01:06:58 --> 01:07:03 [SPEAKER_01]: So again, I think we should we will be spending time over three different timelines Through at the season.
01:07:03 --> 01:07:05 [SPEAKER_01]: It's a very A very dim and then the left thing to do.
01:07:06 --> 01:07:20 [SPEAKER_01]: It's a very true detective thing to do as well It's a very HBO show thing to do so We probably will see carry Christopher you don't cast a young actor like that as Who's been in all of these kind of shows and movies in just a role where he's on screen for ten seconds?
01:07:20 --> 01:07:24 [SPEAKER_01]: And so I suspect we're gonna see Different timelines across the season
01:07:24 --> 01:07:25 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely.
01:07:25 --> 01:07:40 [SPEAKER_02]: And actually, when you say true detective, the whole John Stuart driving to Nashville in the Snowfeld very true detective, certainly from the last main series that, well, season, I should say that I watched.
01:07:41 --> 01:07:41 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
01:07:41 --> 01:07:43 [SPEAKER_02]: And same one, Tony Foster.
01:07:43 --> 01:07:44 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, with Jodie Foster.
01:07:44 --> 01:07:44 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
01:07:45 --> 01:07:46 [SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah, that was,
01:07:47 --> 01:07:50 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was a nice little touch, nice little atmosphere, touch, about it.
01:07:51 --> 01:07:57 [SPEAKER_01]: And that is the one the Chris Monday worked on and was executive producer on and directed episodes of a road episode self sorry.
01:07:57 --> 01:08:02 [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, so he's probably taking a little bit of inspiration from his other major HPO show as well.
01:08:02 --> 01:08:04 [SPEAKER_01]: Excellent stuff, John.
01:08:05 --> 01:08:28 [SPEAKER_01]: that's it for our chat all about lanterns episode one thanks so much to our wonderful fellow uh guardians lanterns and Gothamites for joining us for this episode um any final thoughts of the episode what kind of racing would you give this a biter well i really enjoyed this um i'll give it five gilfs out of five i thought this was a really good uh opener and i wasn't prepared for that and i was drinking water done
01:08:30 --> 01:08:34 [SPEAKER_02]: I absolutely love this introduction to a character.
01:08:34 --> 01:08:38 [SPEAKER_02]: I only at a very sort of broad level know about, and...
01:08:40 --> 01:08:58 [SPEAKER_02]: it possibly is related to comic issues that I haven't seen or whatever, but like this to me was a really fresh take on this character and I, you know, I'm coming at it from
01:08:59 --> 01:09:14 [SPEAKER_02]: crossovers, you know, big event series where you've happened to see the green lanterns and the basic lore and backstory of how Jordan and that sort of lore at
01:09:16 --> 01:09:19 [SPEAKER_02]: on a very basic level, and we did see the round Reynolds movie, of course.
01:09:20 --> 01:09:21 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's why we went a long time ago.
01:09:21 --> 01:09:22 [SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't that great movie.
01:09:22 --> 01:09:23 [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
01:09:23 --> 01:09:31 [SPEAKER_02]: And, but for me, you know, I just liked this, as has a non-green-lance and fam in that sense.
01:09:32 --> 01:09:35 [SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, this introduced the character, it introduced the fact that
01:09:36 --> 01:09:42 [SPEAKER_02]: there can be more than one of them because, you know, Abinsur has plastered over to Hal Jordan.
01:09:43 --> 01:09:47 [SPEAKER_02]: Here, you know, it looks like they're passing it over to John Stewart, maybe.
01:09:47 --> 01:09:49 [SPEAKER_02]: It, you know, maybe, exactly.
01:09:49 --> 01:09:51 [SPEAKER_02]: We don't actually know.
01:09:51 --> 01:09:54 [SPEAKER_02]: And I just think the dialogue was sharp.
01:09:55 --> 01:09:55 [SPEAKER_02]: It was wussy.
01:09:56 --> 01:09:56 [SPEAKER_02]: It was funny.
01:09:57 --> 01:09:59 [SPEAKER_02]: I love the intrigue of
01:10:00 --> 01:10:02 [SPEAKER_02]: of William MacCon.
01:10:02 --> 01:10:09 [SPEAKER_02]: I love the small town vibe of the red necks, the small town, everyone knows one another.
01:10:09 --> 01:10:19 [SPEAKER_02]: Again, you have the gilth, you have the fact that the sheriff is married to the defense lawyer and probably knows the judge, etc.
01:10:20 --> 01:10:20 [SPEAKER_02]: All of this stuff.
01:10:20 --> 01:10:21 [SPEAKER_02]: It's a really,
01:10:31 --> 01:10:33 [SPEAKER_02]: Kevin McDonald's here has the sheriff.
01:10:33 --> 01:10:49 [SPEAKER_01]: So for me yet five gilths out of five Fanta and you give me a weird look earlier on when I pointed out that it shouldn't be gilth at the BG HLF because it's a gramma heat-like-to-f I guess a gramma I'd like to have
01:10:49 --> 01:10:50 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, no, that's true.
01:10:50 --> 01:10:52 [SPEAKER_01]: But you're the reason that I terminology.
01:10:52 --> 01:10:56 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I'm not making any judgment on whether I would, or whether I think.
01:10:56 --> 01:11:00 [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm just taking it from a major part.
01:11:00 --> 01:11:00 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, exactly.
01:11:01 --> 01:11:02 [SPEAKER_01]: Fantastic.
01:11:03 --> 01:11:03 [SPEAKER_01]: Good stuff.
01:11:03 --> 01:11:06 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, really, really good opening episode.
01:11:06 --> 01:11:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Really intrigued to see what happens for the rest of this season.
01:11:09 --> 01:11:13 [SPEAKER_01]: So once again, to life it that we started covering this show.
01:11:14 --> 01:11:18 [SPEAKER_01]: But I do think we need to go down for a drink to the Redneck Pirate Barge on.
01:11:18 --> 01:11:26 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes indeed, yeah, fellow lanterns, fellow quizzes, fellow Gothamites, welcome to the Redneck Rustville Barquise.
01:11:27 --> 01:11:32 [SPEAKER_02]: We are on episode one, so of course we start off with question one.
01:11:32 --> 01:11:40 [SPEAKER_02]: which is what song does Hal Jordan play multiple times to get the attention of the local pub patrons?
01:11:41 --> 01:11:43 [SPEAKER_01]: It's played about five times, isn't it?
01:11:44 --> 01:11:44 [SPEAKER_01]: In that scene?
01:11:45 --> 01:11:46 [SPEAKER_01]: And it's certainly areas.
01:11:47 --> 01:11:54 [SPEAKER_01]: Should we give the little clue for maybe some Europeans that might have been watching the episode and some of the English and Irish people that may have been watching it?
01:11:54 --> 01:11:55 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I think so.
01:11:55 --> 01:12:04 [SPEAKER_01]: It the song sends very very like another song from the 70s called I've got myself a brand new combine artist there.
01:12:05 --> 01:12:05 [SPEAKER_01]: You go.
01:12:05 --> 01:12:09 [SPEAKER_01]: It's a similar tune to that and I was laughing at it going That's one of my least favorite songs.
01:12:09 --> 01:12:17 [SPEAKER_01]: It was number one the year I was born or the day I was born actually That's why I always remember, but suppose there's no way that held your it's playing.
01:12:17 --> 01:12:19 [SPEAKER_01]: I've got a brand new combine harvest
01:12:20 --> 01:12:24 [SPEAKER_01]: So, yes, that's our tip, that's our tip.
01:12:24 --> 01:12:25 [SPEAKER_01]: You can probably bring it out.
01:12:25 --> 01:12:26 [SPEAKER_01]: John, do you want to give the question more time?
01:12:26 --> 01:12:27 [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
01:12:27 --> 01:12:33 [SPEAKER_02]: What song does Hal Jordan play multiple times to get the attention of the local pub patron?
01:12:33 --> 01:12:33 [SPEAKER_01]: Fantastic.
01:12:34 --> 01:12:36 [SPEAKER_01]: That's the first question of eight questions for the season.
01:12:36 --> 01:12:38 [SPEAKER_01]: Gather together that all the correct answers at the end of the season.
01:12:39 --> 01:12:44 [SPEAKER_01]: Email them into us to feedback at tvpodcastindustries.com at the end of the season and you could be in the chance
01:12:45 --> 01:12:47 [SPEAKER_01]: of getting your hands on some lanterns goodies.
01:12:47 --> 01:12:52 [SPEAKER_01]: I think with that it brings on to our wonderful feedback from our awesome fellow lanterns.
01:12:52 --> 01:12:54 [SPEAKER_01]: John, we've got a bit in after the first episode can make.
01:12:54 --> 01:12:55 [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
01:12:55 --> 01:13:01 [SPEAKER_02]: First up, on email from Coffee and vodka, greetings fellow roller skating defenders.
01:13:02 --> 01:13:18 [SPEAKER_02]: After Cray Gillespie's admission of ignoring Supergill's source material and the resultant tanking movie, the creators of lanterns got in front with their talk of owning long boxes of green lantern comics and their love of the lore to tweet.
01:13:19 --> 01:13:22 [SPEAKER_02]: And after just one episode you can tell it wasn't just lip service.
01:13:23 --> 01:13:32 [SPEAKER_02]: Even with the heavy HBO and true detective midwest grounding, they weren't shy with showing Green Lantern's powers, so far the best of both worlds.
01:13:32 --> 01:13:39 [SPEAKER_02]: John's stoicism and hell's weariness and weariness felt earned rather than just scripted to fit the show.
01:13:39 --> 01:13:49 [SPEAKER_02]: Kerry Kane, in short order, was fleshed out to a full character, rather than just making her a hostile sheriff, keen to keep our lanterns out of the investigation.
01:13:50 --> 01:14:01 [SPEAKER_02]: the backdrop social commentary framing Earth and its inhabitants as backwater avoided by the rest of the galaxy completed the setting, making for something that felt solid and real.
01:14:02 --> 01:14:07 [SPEAKER_02]: Even the bad guys though only with their surface scratched were as substantial as they were mysterious.
01:14:08 --> 01:14:17 [SPEAKER_02]: 2026 has been a great year for TV with Lance and so far joining the standouts Wonderman, Invincible and Spice in War.
01:14:17 --> 01:14:24 [SPEAKER_02]: Here's to hoping it continues, five fabricated fibers, fast flings, and frosty couches.
01:14:24 --> 01:14:27 [SPEAKER_02]: And for five, peace and take care.
01:14:27 --> 01:14:28 [SPEAKER_02]: Coffee and vodka.
01:14:28 --> 01:14:29 [SPEAKER_01]: Fantastic.
01:14:29 --> 01:14:30 [SPEAKER_01]: Coffee, vodka.
01:14:30 --> 01:14:30 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
01:14:30 --> 01:14:32 [SPEAKER_01]: I love your racing, so it's again.
01:14:32 --> 01:14:33 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
01:14:33 --> 01:14:36 [SPEAKER_02]: I couldn't agree with you more, actually.
01:14:36 --> 01:14:54 [SPEAKER_02]: I think I didn't actually know that in terms of the admission from Craig Gillespie around sort of not taking on board the source material for Supergirl and whilst I'm not going into that, I think like if you're doing a project on the
01:15:02 --> 01:15:09 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, do your research, basically, as a creative thing, even if you're me want to go in a completely different way.
01:15:09 --> 01:15:12 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, because the touch points are important.
01:15:12 --> 01:15:25 [SPEAKER_02]: I always thought Nolan had a good sort of grasp of this on on Batman, you know, around, you know, ways like saying, well, how do you know what to take on how, you know,
01:15:27 --> 01:15:45 [SPEAKER_02]: what you should put in is like you know it is important to do your own thing and you also have to respect that you are in a sense standing on the shoulders of giants because there's a huge amount of writing and creative wealth on this very character.
01:15:45 --> 01:15:50 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah and I think what's I suppose what's frustrating is comic book fans to when somebody says well I just ignored it completely as
01:15:51 --> 01:15:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Comfortable grocers do this every month.
01:15:53 --> 01:16:00 [SPEAKER_01]: They jump into a character maybe for the first time or for the first time after 20 years and they have to go Well five of the people are right in this character.
01:16:00 --> 01:16:12 [SPEAKER_01]: What did they do with it and they find their path there and then come up with a new story and sometimes It's a brand new origin story with the character, but it still has to take elements of what people have written before because that's the character, right?
01:16:13 --> 01:16:25 [SPEAKER_01]: Interestingly, Supergirl's movie was supposed to be based on the Tom King story of Supergirl, a very, very well-respected DC comic book, and Tom King is one of the writers here, one of the showrooms here on the Lanterns.
01:16:25 --> 01:16:27 [SPEAKER_01]: So not only are they saying,
01:16:28 --> 01:16:31 [SPEAKER_01]: We're involved and have long boxes of hamstrings comics.
01:16:31 --> 01:16:35 [SPEAKER_01]: They brought on board a comic book writer to be central to the team Yeah, I'll create it on the show.
01:16:35 --> 01:16:41 [SPEAKER_01]: So, um, look this is all in the world appears affron and and James gun.
01:16:41 --> 01:16:47 [SPEAKER_01]: They thought they had something that would hit with an audience with super girl I don't think they were trying to ignore the universe.
01:16:47 --> 01:16:55 [SPEAKER_01]: I think they thought Craig Gillespie's take would be something that people would be interested in and unfortunately it just didn't land in the way that they hoped it would because
01:16:55 --> 01:17:22 [SPEAKER_01]: they're really trying to land the whole universe here and every setback they have in this universe is causing them issues getting the next thing green that they're getting the next thing done so I'm just hoping we're going to get great comic book movies that's all I want is just great comic book stories brought to life whatever way they do them this is another adaptation there's no book called lanterns which is set at this time telling the story the way they're telling and I'm just hoping it continues as well as it's started here
01:17:23 --> 01:17:26 [SPEAKER_02]: I guess as well, it's the context, I mean, you know.
01:17:28 --> 01:17:38 [SPEAKER_02]: not many people reference Iron Man 2 much, or dare I say it thought too, and they, yes, they made good money.
01:17:39 --> 01:17:42 [SPEAKER_02]: But like now it's everything's compared to Endgame.
01:17:43 --> 01:17:44 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was before that, it wasn't.
01:17:44 --> 01:17:45 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
01:17:45 --> 01:17:52 [SPEAKER_02]: And so, but also people look back fondly when really, yes, if they want a choice of going
01:17:57 --> 01:17:59 [SPEAKER_02]: One, yes, and three, yes, two.
01:17:59 --> 01:18:01 [SPEAKER_02]: I'll do it if I'm doing the trilogy.
01:18:01 --> 01:18:02 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, yes, exactly.
01:18:02 --> 01:18:06 [SPEAKER_01]: That was what was trying to set up the universe wasn't.
01:18:06 --> 01:18:09 [SPEAKER_01]: It was the problem for two, but it wasn't the great story on its own.
01:18:09 --> 01:18:16 [SPEAKER_01]: And here we are at the start of a new universe, at the start of a new series, and the setting up a great establishing story here for the world.
01:18:16 --> 01:18:20 [SPEAKER_01]: But I'm sure there's going to be people that will be rubbed up the wrong way by what's happening here in this
01:18:22 --> 01:18:26 [SPEAKER_01]: what's going to happen in the story overall, but that happens with every single color book story.
01:18:27 --> 01:18:35 [SPEAKER_01]: And you know someone pick up one book about man and say there's the best story ever created, and the person beside will go and destroy everything that I liked about the character.
01:18:35 --> 01:18:46 [SPEAKER_01]: And you know the people that loved, loved Tim Burton's Batman don't necessarily like Christopher Nolan's movies or the people that liked the Batman from the 60s don't like every other version after that even though that was never.
01:18:46 --> 01:18:47 [SPEAKER_01]: And that's the thing.
01:18:47 --> 01:18:48 [SPEAKER_01]: It's like it's I think
01:18:49 --> 01:19:08 [SPEAKER_02]: I think you're right, just when you're starting off a creative project certainly is ambitious as the DCUverse, then, you know, I'm just really surprised that anybody involved in that project would say, I ignore the source material because you'd expect him to go, I ignore it because everybody else had my back, you know, who may be something like that.
01:19:08 --> 01:19:15 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm the creator of a movie I need to come in and direct it and everybody else knows the source material and was keeping me on track would be the way you'd hope they'd say.
01:19:15 --> 01:19:16 [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, yeah.
01:19:16 --> 01:19:31 [SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, I, I think often in vodka, absolutely agree with the sentiment here around this TV show and around the two main protagonists around John Stewart and how and how they captured here, how the world feels, how,
01:19:33 --> 01:19:49 [SPEAKER_02]: sort of the antagonist in Kerry Kane, at least at the moment, you know, the human antagonist but at the same time, sort of the deeper mystery here of the alien antagonist with the, you know, the exploding wailin.
01:19:49 --> 01:19:52 [SPEAKER_02]: And so, yes, I totally agree.
01:19:52 --> 01:19:56 [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's a really good TV here in this first episode.
01:19:56 --> 01:19:56 [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
01:19:57 --> 01:20:03 [SPEAKER_01]: Let's move on over to our Facebook group at facebook.com slash group slash TV podcast industries a little bit of feedback over there.
01:20:03 --> 01:20:06 [SPEAKER_01]: At first up from Steve Brand, the wonderful Steve Brand who says, I loved it.
01:20:07 --> 01:20:09 [SPEAKER_01]: The mystery has definitely drawn me into this world.
01:20:09 --> 01:20:12 [SPEAKER_01]: I can't wait to see the rest of the story play out in the multiple timelines.
01:20:13 --> 01:20:14 [SPEAKER_01]: Access to Steve.
01:20:14 --> 01:20:23 [SPEAKER_01]: When he says, as a non-comer book reader, I felt like a lot of exposition and a bit slower times, but the actin was great and I'm trying to have patience as it seems that the dropped us off in the middle of the story.
01:20:24 --> 01:20:28 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Wendy, I agree with you that it's definitely that's the opening episode as all the base.
01:20:29 --> 01:20:30 [SPEAKER_01]: The middle of almost three stories.
01:20:30 --> 01:20:39 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm really, you know, you've got the start of it, which is kind of dropping you off in how has been green lantern for a while, so we're hopefully going to see a bit of that a bit of time when
01:20:39 --> 01:20:49 [SPEAKER_01]: how and Jon Stewart working together is the second story and then the third story being what's going on with Jon Stewart after the potential death of Hal Jordan.
01:20:49 --> 01:20:50 [SPEAKER_01]: Interesting.
01:20:50 --> 01:20:58 [SPEAKER_02]: Do you think that the season will sort of be varying amounts of those three main chunks of a timeline?
01:20:59 --> 01:21:00 [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's possible.
01:21:00 --> 01:21:01 [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's a great way to go.
01:21:06 --> 01:21:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, it does kind of, it's, it's kind of style isn't it?
01:21:09 --> 01:21:28 [SPEAKER_01]: There's, there's people that have been comparing this to the watchman, which he served as, as lead, lead right around or lead with the righteous room, let's say on and that show started off with the death of a very well known actor, probably the mess best known actor in the show and then told the backwards as to how they got to that point and that's what people are suspecting.
01:21:28 --> 01:21:31 [SPEAKER_01]: This show will do is how to get to this point in 2020, 26.
01:21:31 --> 01:21:31 [SPEAKER_01]: So,
01:21:32 --> 01:21:43 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that'd be interesting to see how they're how they're gonna do it, but I think yeah You're supposed to feel a little the story entitled, but hopefully at least you're like in the characters and like in the acting because They're gonna carry you through the story as done.
01:21:43 --> 01:21:44 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely.
01:21:44 --> 01:21:52 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I think the acting's been really good and I like You know sometimes the overarching plot there are new nuances in the characters.
01:21:52 --> 01:21:54 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the character interactions that
01:21:54 --> 01:21:59 [SPEAKER_02]: you know, sometimes can get overlooked where you're just looking at plot.
01:21:59 --> 01:21:59 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
01:22:00 --> 01:22:06 [SPEAKER_02]: And so I think that's really important point when you say, you know, the acting here was really, really good.
01:22:06 --> 01:22:13 [SPEAKER_02]: And I think to what coffee in vodka also said in this notion that the wearing us, the weariness,
01:22:14 --> 01:22:29 [SPEAKER_02]: a couple to the stoicism of John Stewart and you know there's a really interesting character dynamic and you know I give it character dynamics might not always be what people are looking for in you know they're they're weekly show whatever but
01:22:29 --> 01:22:55 [SPEAKER_02]: you know it's why the wire was such a great show and that was its main bread and butter don't really really well really effectively and for a lot of people not everyone but you know and I think hopefully Wendy yeah the exposition helps sort of layer it in for the next few episodes good stuff thanks Wendy and thanks Steve thank you
01:22:55 --> 01:23:03 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, over on Discord, we got a message from Joe Herbs who says, promising start, my wife was entertained, so that was a good sign.
01:23:03 --> 01:23:07 [SPEAKER_02]: We watched Watchman recently, Linda Lough, is involved in this too.
01:23:07 --> 01:23:11 [SPEAKER_02]: It's interesting to see some similarities in the setting.
01:23:11 --> 01:23:11 [SPEAKER_02]: There you go.
01:23:11 --> 01:23:12 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
01:23:12 --> 01:23:13 [SPEAKER_02]: Great stuff.
01:23:13 --> 01:23:13 [SPEAKER_02]: Thanks, Joe.
01:23:16 --> 01:23:35 [SPEAKER_02]: The watchman was really, really good, and I mean, it's opened up for me such a grim part of American history that I never heard about before, which was the fire bombing of sort of the black
01:23:42 --> 01:23:54 [SPEAKER_02]: it was just so brutal and I love that the watchman showed did that and I thought Lindeloth and the writing were really, really good at what they brought.
01:23:54 --> 01:23:56 [SPEAKER_02]: It was such a fascinating series for me.
01:23:56 --> 01:23:57 [SPEAKER_02]: It was brilliant.
01:23:57 --> 01:23:59 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so good.
01:23:59 --> 01:24:02 [SPEAKER_01]: Again, with a property there.
01:24:02 --> 01:24:10 [SPEAKER_01]: people thought how could you do a sequel to that and it's such a brilliant job to do a sequel to one of the most well-known comic books of all time.
01:24:10 --> 01:24:11 [SPEAKER_01]: Brilliant stuff, thanks Joe.
01:24:12 --> 01:24:20 [SPEAKER_01]: Richard Blaze says, where this has all the hallmarks of being a classic fantastic acting and treating story and just the right amount of mature grinding needed.
01:24:20 --> 01:24:21 [SPEAKER_01]: Love Dept.
01:24:21 --> 01:24:21 [SPEAKER_01]: 1.
01:24:21 --> 01:24:26 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm really can't wait to see where it now goes to tie up the 30 years covered in the show.
01:24:26 --> 01:24:35 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think I'm kind of on the same side that this is going to potentially take place over those different time periods that they've set up.
01:24:35 --> 01:24:38 [SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully we'll see a bit of that in each of the episodes going forward.
01:24:38 --> 01:24:39 [SPEAKER_01]: That'd be kind of a cool way to go, I think.
01:24:39 --> 01:24:50 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, great stuff, thanks Richard, and Paolo says, it didn't capture me completely, although I appreciate a move out of the usual Metropolitan Superhero setting.
01:24:50 --> 01:24:56 [SPEAKER_02]: Clearly takes a lot from the now ubiquitous Neo-Western series sprouted by Yellowstone.
01:24:56 --> 01:25:05 [SPEAKER_02]: It seems like they worked very hard in removing any comic book, campiness, maybe as a contrast to Nathan Filiens guy, Gardner.
01:25:05 --> 01:25:07 [SPEAKER_02]: Do we know if he will appear here?
01:25:07 --> 01:25:09 [SPEAKER_02]: Let's see how this proceeds.
01:25:09 --> 01:25:13 [SPEAKER_02]: But now it's a three out of five tofu steaks for me.
01:25:14 --> 01:25:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Very good, very good.
01:25:16 --> 01:25:42 [SPEAKER_01]: We do know the guy gardener is going to appear in the show yet we will be seeing Nathan Filling at some point during the series I am db has listed for seven episodes because we knew you wasn't in the first episode, but I think that will be quite a lot to have that hair cut on screen And so I suspect we will see him in a setting where we see lots of different lanterns of different types Or maybe he comes to help in the investigation because he's another green lanterns, isn't he?
01:25:43 --> 01:25:43 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely.
01:25:43 --> 01:25:44 [SPEAKER_02]: I think so, yeah.
01:25:45 --> 01:25:45 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
01:25:45 --> 01:25:46 [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes, yes.
01:25:46 --> 01:25:47 [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes.
01:25:47 --> 01:25:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, he's another one of the green Latin, so we hopefully will see him culminate in style, because we love Nathan Phelian.
01:25:53 --> 01:25:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
01:25:53 --> 01:25:55 [SPEAKER_01]: Definitely add some more comedy to the show, right?
01:25:55 --> 01:26:04 [SPEAKER_02]: He's certainly will, but I mean, I hope it's, yeah, I guess they're just an used to be careful with that, to be honest, because his haircuts are distracting.
01:26:04 --> 01:26:05 [SPEAKER_01]: It's also disaster.
01:26:06 --> 01:26:07 [SPEAKER_02]: It is like other books as well, though, yeah.
01:26:07 --> 01:26:09 [SPEAKER_02]: It feels like a very, um,
01:26:10 --> 01:26:12 [SPEAKER_01]: James Gunn thing to do.
01:26:13 --> 01:26:13 [SPEAKER_01]: And to be honest.
01:26:14 --> 01:26:14 [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
01:26:15 --> 01:26:16 [SPEAKER_01]: Picking the character of Gaga and Raid.
01:26:16 --> 01:26:19 [SPEAKER_01]: The cover books is a very good thing to do.
01:26:19 --> 01:26:19 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
01:26:19 --> 01:26:22 [SPEAKER_02]: And the hair, of course, even probably is the basis of this.
01:26:23 --> 01:26:23 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, exactly.
01:26:24 --> 01:26:24 [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
01:26:24 --> 01:26:25 [SPEAKER_02]: I think they need to just make sure.
01:26:26 --> 01:26:34 [SPEAKER_02]: It fits the property not everything needs to be and I do love James go on of course But not everything needs to do a James go on it.
01:26:34 --> 01:26:39 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and so we'll see But we know he's going to appear and we know he has that haircut That's the character haircut.
01:26:39 --> 01:26:54 [SPEAKER_02]: He can't just take it away because you know it's it's too funny with a month's greed Well, maybe we're We're a yeah a cowboy Just wear a cowboy Great stuff or if they made him look like you know no country for old men that would be really cool
01:26:56 --> 01:26:59 [SPEAKER_01]: and I haven't been walking around like sugar with the, with the, um, guess what?
01:26:59 --> 01:27:14 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
01:27:14 --> 01:27:20 [SPEAKER_01]: Seems like this could be a fascinating mystery series that could set things up in the wider DC Universe.
01:27:20 --> 01:27:21 [SPEAKER_01]: Very good, Kenlogg.
01:27:21 --> 01:27:25 [SPEAKER_01]: I'll have to leave it to some of our other fellow DC fans.
01:27:25 --> 01:27:29 [SPEAKER_01]: I know Richard Blaise is a big DC fan as well, so maybe he can...
01:27:30 --> 01:27:51 [SPEAKER_01]: Give us a bit of a contrast as to how Hal Jordan is in the comics, but I know there's been plenty of takes of the character over the years been around for many, many years longer than I have, even so, so I know there's been many, many different takes, but yes, this version of Hal Jordan, I suspect is a bit different than what you pick up in the Greenland to comic on average version of Hal Jordan anyway.
01:27:51 --> 01:28:07 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I suspect because he needs to be the hero and here not looking like the hero that most people would follow except when he's posing for photographs and selfies with everybody around him And there was something I meant to mention just when Wendy said about the show being a little slow and exposition heavy
01:28:07 --> 01:28:15 [SPEAKER_01]: At that moment when Zoe making meets with John Stuart in the bar and she's asked some questions, there was a point where I was going, is she an alien?
01:28:16 --> 01:28:24 [SPEAKER_01]: Because the questions that she was asked, yeah, and the fact that he was delivering all of this dialogue and exposition, I was going, there's nobody else that would ask these questions.
01:28:24 --> 01:28:29 [SPEAKER_01]: I know it's a boring local ten with, you know, with not much going on.
01:28:29 --> 01:28:30 [SPEAKER_01]: These are the new guys in ten.
01:28:30 --> 01:28:41 [SPEAKER_01]: But nobody would ask all of those questions and get all of those answers, so I was thinking she was going to be a much bigger character than she was in Alien, and they would have a fight with her later on with the episode or something, and then a third stage.
01:28:41 --> 01:28:54 [SPEAKER_01]: No, no, John's just going to sleep with her, and it's going to be someone from the most powerful family in town, and yeah, that's probably is going to cause problems for them into future, but I was going, this is going to tear it out, she's an Alien, and I absolutely.
01:28:55 --> 01:28:57 [SPEAKER_01]: Excellent stuff.
01:28:57 --> 01:28:59 [SPEAKER_01]: Thanks Ken for your feedback.
01:28:59 --> 01:29:04 [SPEAKER_01]: We have one last piece of feedback in it was just given while we were recording the bugcaster Okay, then from Philipay.
01:29:05 --> 01:29:11 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, Philipay says really enjoyed this episode very promising start
01:29:11 --> 01:29:19 [SPEAKER_02]: John Stewart has been my favourite Green Lantern ever since the Justice League animated series, so it's great to finally see him in live action.
01:29:19 --> 01:29:27 [SPEAKER_02]: Also, I'm a huge Damon Lindellof fan, going all the way back to Lost, the very first series I followed from start to finish.
01:29:27 --> 01:29:28 [SPEAKER_02]: Fantastic.
01:29:28 --> 01:29:30 [SPEAKER_02]: Excellent stuff, Phillipay.
01:29:30 --> 01:29:36 [SPEAKER_02]: Really glad you could get your thoughts in on this first episode of Lanterns.
01:29:37 --> 01:29:38 [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, there you go.
01:29:38 --> 01:29:40 [SPEAKER_01]: Ask, we'll ask you, Phillipay, how different is
01:29:41 --> 01:29:44 [SPEAKER_01]: in the comic books to this version of Hal Jordan we see on TV.
01:29:44 --> 01:29:56 [SPEAKER_01]: It would be kind of cool to hear your thoughts on that and what what you think there Great I'm right there with you as well a bit lost I remember following along every single episode of that show as it was coming out to the point where the finale was airing
01:29:56 --> 01:30:07 [SPEAKER_01]: in the US that I think it was 3 a.m. our time and I got up at 3 a.m. our time to sit on the couch and watch the finale and bold my eyes age and at the finale and how it all wrapped up accurately.
01:30:08 --> 01:30:11 [SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was absolutely wonderful and then had to go to work about three hours later.
01:30:12 --> 01:30:21 [SPEAKER_01]: That's the after having a very emotional experience that would actually probably show it's like the day off that's all I'm saying that absolutely, I think you should have done absolutely.
