[00:00:00] This is The Boys Season 4 Podcast on TV Podcast Industries. We're talking about Season 4 Episode 4, Wisdom of the Ages. We have no physical power over you. We never did. You could have broken out of here anytime you wanted. We couldn't have stopped you, but you didn't because you couldn't

[00:00:19] stand the idea that we would be disappointed in you. Your needs for approval and for love brought in the best psychologists in the world. They developed the protocol to carefully engineer that need so that you would be obedient. In many ways, that was our greatest success.

[00:00:46] I don't need any of it anymore. It doesn't matter what you do to mayor the rest of the staff here. Your need for love is so deep. It's so human. You'll never be able to overcome that.

[00:00:58] That's where you're wrong. I'm not human and neither is my son. I'm going to raise him so that he knows it. Welcome back, fellow boys and girls to TV Podcast Industries. We're on to the fourth episode of

[00:01:38] Season 4 of The Boys Wisdom of the Ages. I'm one of your hosts, Derek. Hello there, fellow boys and girls. I am one of your chocolate whale cakes, John. And rounding out this group, the one with none of the wisdom. I am Chris.

[00:01:52] Excellent, but he is the birthday boy. Happy birthday, Chris. He is. I am the ages. He is starting to die his hair. No. I'm deep into my gray and I'm enjoying it.

[00:02:07] I am becoming the George Clooney of the group. You got, Richie, we are the epitome of kind of like- What, a Nescafe Pimp? No, no, Nespresso, sir. Nespresso, Nescafe. We are the expensive brand of Nescafe, okay?

[00:02:26] We built and patented a twirling machine to make you pay more. And do you know what? I do because I like the coffee. Didn't he just get paid for the advertising and nothing to do with the actual brand, right? 100% he had nothing to do with it,

[00:02:43] but he makes you think that he does. He's not like all the actors who make their own vodka or borscht and distillery to make their own vodka and gin to make a hell of a lot of money.

[00:02:53] Are you telling me like Dwayne The Rock Johnson doesn't drink his own tequila? Oh, he knows that at home in his bath apparently. I'm Ryan Reynolds. Ryan Reynolds just sleeps in the vodka, guys. That's fine. That's why he's so funny. He's on the gin.

[00:03:11] It is, aviation gin. Excuse me. Tears galore with that one sadness and tears galore. We are not sponsored by AVN and Jim, but I want to get back to Chris's birthday. We're taking a stand up out there. How was the birthday, Chris? Did you have a good time?

[00:03:23] It was fantastic. Thank you so much to all the boys and girls who reached out over on Facebook on the post to wish me a happy birthday. It was very, very, it meant a lot. It really

[00:03:32] appreciated. Excellent. Yeah. And Dr. Bobby even said he has a nice beard, John. I know. Just because he has a little face. It's us fellow beardies sticking together. There you go. That's how it is. Do you get any sprains, twinges, muscle spasms during your birthday?

[00:03:46] Oh, I've been having this for years. I also have an ugly child that like no offense, my child is a gigantic monster baby. So I've been having trouble. He's not at all. He is a lump. I love to bits. He's a heffa-lump. He's tall.

[00:04:04] Like I don't know where he got it. He is going to dwarf all of us. He's going to look down on his godfather just and kind of go, yeah. Not if I'm on Derek's shoulders. He won't. Exactly.

[00:04:17] But then you put a trench coat on you guys and we snatched it. But thank you so much. It was a beautiful birthday. Absolutely. And came right in heels of our Father's Day as well,

[00:04:27] Chrissy, at Father's Day and your birthday as well. So happy Father's Day to all the boys and girls out there as well. Absolutely. It's like one of those people that has their

[00:04:35] birthday close to Christmas and it's like damn it. Yeah. But I got still got two presents because I'm like no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. If I'm going to do a mother's and a birthday for my wife,

[00:04:47] I'm getting a father's and of course I know no offense to be a father at the beginning is literally you did the bare minimum biologically. You did the bare minimum to bring life into

[00:05:01] the world. But we do a bit for further on so it makes equals out in the end. Yeah. Rewarding if you're being a good dad rather than just fathering a child, Chrissy. Yes, exactly. That's the difference. And yeah, we have an institution in our family

[00:05:14] because Mother's Day over here is the same day as my mom's birthday. We celebrate American Mother's Day and her birthday so that she gets to a tune a year. So that's the smart way to do it.

[00:05:22] Yes. Two presents sounds good. Anyway, enough about about birthdays and Mother's Day. Let's get into our discussion about the boys again on season four. Some feedbacks come in since we recorded the last episode, we recorded the first three episodes of advance of them being released.

[00:05:36] I was lucky enough to be able to get some feedback in for the third episode which I shared so you guys haven't seen that but we do have some other feedback in on the first couple

[00:05:44] of episodes. First up we got an email in from Namor McKenzie who said, Dear Derek, John and Chris, I have been enjoying your podcast for quite some time now, especially your in-depth knowledge of the boys. And finally, I may have something to

[00:05:55] contribute. In episode one, whilst he was taking a dump, Sister Sage also takes an info dump from a very special book. Amongst the pile of books strewn around her apartment she is reading, Naming and Necessity. This is actually a real book, quite celebrated in philosophy. When the

[00:06:09] camera moves one can see that the author of the book is none other than Kripke. The first name is half covered by Sage's fingers but it is Soul Kripke who is the soul and why

[00:06:18] isn't necessary to name him now? In season four one might ask, Soul Kripke was a renowned philosopher and logician who died in 2022 after season three of the boys had finished airing. It appears that he was also a second cousin once removed from the showrunner Eric Kripke.

[00:06:32] So this is a sage homage to a dear departed relative. Following hard on the heels of another logician's cameo in the International Blockbuster aka Kurt Gödel in Oppenheimer, what makes this latest name check both logical and shocking is the fact that

[00:06:47] Soul Kripke has received the shock prize in logic and philosophy. With pride for your excellent podcast I'm still listening to boys lively and deadly, defective and detective Namor McKenzie. Excellent stuff Namor. Thanks for that info. That's really useful little

[00:07:06] snippet of information. Yeah it's really nice to put these little Easter eggs in there from America. Philosophical Easter egg no less. Absolutely. Used a real book by a relative if you have one sticking in your show. See we just do Easter eggs around like made of.

[00:07:19] Bottles of whiskey. I'm whiskey exactly. This is actually some philosophical Easter eggs. I like that, that's very high brow. I like it. Look that's nice because usually it is like it's the name of like the customer's last name. In fact that's a real book. Bravo.

[00:07:39] Absolutely but by a relative who's departed as well he would have died around the time that the show was being made as well so I presume that's a top of our Kripke's mind as well. Interesting stuff. Thanks for listening Namor. Yeah thanks more for listening.

[00:07:54] We also got some feedback in an episode two from Dr Bob Phillips who said not for the faint hearted or tender stomached or narrow minded this episode. Well this entire show really. I was struck in this one how the layers of the story,

[00:08:06] unwritten story and meta narrative are so skillfully woven. There's the tale of two families, each equal in lack of dignity intact, hurtling to an explosive mad ending. There's the layer of untruth about all of their existences and how the manipulation of messages

[00:08:20] and media gets you what you want. Then there's what seems to be the overarching story reaching for meaning in your life. Of course it could be the fumes from the special hair dye that

[00:08:29] produced this particular insight. I think Dr Bob might be referencing the kind of hair dye you would use on a particular area if you're in home that disposition. There you go. Yes not bleaching. Never bleaching definitely not bleaching. Never bleaching.

[00:08:46] Excellent stuff Dr Bob. Absolutely I think the episode so far I think in particular for the one we're going to cover with episode four from this season and it really isn't for

[00:08:59] the faint heart. I mean even just we continually are seeing the previously on that shows up from screeners that we had and it is whether it's the miniature man going up the rear end of someone

[00:09:16] each time we start the episode. I'm like, is this in the episode again? I don't know it's previously on and it's like okay I guess you just have to roll with it with the boys.

[00:09:29] I'll have to say it wasn't his rear end but anyway we'll move on to more feedback from Dr Bob on episode three because John forgot what that was. On episode three it says we're going

[00:09:39] to get a lot of working through past trauma this season I think and a very little of it will be with traditional therapy quite a lot with violence some with a 12 step approach and some

[00:09:49] with good old fashioned BDSM that's Ashley and Cameron Cole from last episode as well. Absolutely the ball basher Ashley. Yeah I think very unconventional therapy will be be used or probably some off the rack crazy Waco ones I think for sure.

[00:10:12] Well like even the 12 step approach which is what Frenchie was taking led him to Colin the person whose family he murdered and then he ended off in a relationship with him. Maybe those types of methods also don't work on therapy for them probably not good stuff.

[00:10:26] Thanks Dr Bob and Jamie Lawton says I thought the bloody poker was a harpoon to get the deep sage had to take out Ambrosius. We had that theory as well. Yeah and last episode it's all confirmed in this episode what that actually is and we'll

[00:10:41] talk about it in episode four so but yeah we had exactly the same theory it was one of those weird ones where the camera was just focusing in on it going you want to know what this is

[00:10:51] until next week. Yeah no no great we'll definitely get into that because it's a special one. Thanks Jamie for that feedback and finally we also have feedback from David Mr Rider who had this to say so I think those blooming onions had a side of octopus for sure.

[00:11:07] This season feels different I think we've been used to so much fast pace and now it's just slowed down it feels different not a complaint just an observation. I don't know if sage is working with homelander or setting him up for a dubious demise

[00:11:22] I can't put my finger on it yet so far though I'm enjoying it and I definitely want to see a deep dive into homelander's actual past maybe this is where they humanize him and make us feel

[00:11:33] bad for him. Thank you David whether we feel bad for him I'm not entirely sure kind of but he does like his vengeance and I'm totally with you on the sister sage thing certainly I would say she's more than likely clever enough to cover all her bases.

[00:11:56] Yes absolutely. But nonetheless if it's then up against just raw physical power who knows but interestingly in this episode I did get the sense that she was connecting in with what sort of Barbara, Frank and Marcy had been doing to overcome just the sheer physicality and strength

[00:12:20] of homelander that they couldn't compete with I had the feeling that she was going down that approach as well. Yeah glorifying him and feeding his neediness so feeding the ego and the ego. Absolutely no and there's certainly something you see about sister sage you know I think

[00:12:42] originally when she joined up with homelander she specifically said I don't want to get into one of those superhero outfits because they're just going to make it mildly racist and I'll have to walk around in that thing and then by the third episode she's there standing on stage

[00:12:54] in front of everybody in her brand new superhero outfit hazing herself for every moment so I do feel she's going to be taken out in homelander at some point so she'll have a secondary plan

[00:13:03] in case homelander turns and everything if she gets away quick enough from those laser eyes which what he usually uses on something very quickly to take the match so but great stuff David I see you have the same idea on what that harpoon or that bloody poker was

[00:13:18] three now confirmed an episode for what that is and again we'll discuss it in this episode I do want to say one quick thing reminder to all of our fellow boys and girls who were

[00:13:28] watching the show I know these these episodes are coming out weekly and everybody wants to speculate about what's coming up in the future but I have already seen a bunch of sites who are

[00:13:37] pretending that they have a theory about something that's coming up in future episodes just remember screeners went out for all eight episodes so if you see a theory that looks really really plausible it's likely they've just catched their theory in an episode they've already seen

[00:13:52] so be very careful of spoilers out there there's loads of them unfortunately oh no I'm so glad I actually didn't read any of the other bits about the show god don't do that yeah it's awful isn't

[00:14:06] it like when we got our screeners in it specifically said we can't release our episodes till 5 pm GMT which is about six or seven hours after the episode comes out but that's to allow us to get

[00:14:15] the coverage done allow us to get to talk about the episode in full and not spoiler for anybody but I've seen a bunch of a bunch of unfortunately other websites that like the clicks for their

[00:14:25] theories on what might be happening to Homelander and their theories of what might happen to Billy by the end of the season and it's awful so is this what the is this what uh Dr Bob means with

[00:14:36] regards to the layers of truth and untruth well yeah and uh media and messaging and oh my god oh I just bring back libraries that's all I can do it's simpler no more internet for you

[00:14:52] absolutely brilliant stuff let's go on to our discussion about the boys want to say huge thank you to everybody that sent their feedback so far if you want to send your feedback to us please

[00:15:00] email us to feedback at tvpodcastindustries.com or pop on over to our facebook group there's a spoiler post up there every week for the episode where you can share your thoughts and chat

[00:15:09] with the other fellow boys and girls over on tv podcast industries you can join us there at facebook.com slash groups slash tv podcast industries excellent stuff and with our public service reminder as always around the season four boys pub quiz so fellow quizzes and fellow boys

[00:15:29] and girls get your thinking hats on your opera glasses at the ready for the question that will come a bit later on in the podcast absolutely if you missed any of the questions from the first

[00:15:43] three episodes they're all available on the website at tvpodcastindustries.com there's a pub quizzes button up there that has the first three questions up there and the fourth one will be added after this episode comes out miss stay ever vigilant fellow quizzes but

[00:15:59] let us get into our spoiler filled discussion Derek what are some of the episode details well the showrunner for the show of course is Eric Kripke this is based on the comic book series

[00:16:10] by Garth Ennis and Derek Robertson executive producer of the show of course are Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg this episode was written by Jeff Owl and he's a script coordinator and continuity consultant on the boys and previously wrote season three episode three as well

[00:16:24] so this is the second episode of the boys excellent stuff as any good nerd I always like a good continuity consultant absolutely yeah they're really important especially when you've got a long-running show because they can pull all the details together for their episodes right

[00:16:40] that's lost I wonder do they call it the boys bible is that possibly he'll get the bb go get the bb great stuff and the episode was directed by phil scrick here this is the sixth episode of the

[00:16:53] boys and a second this season he directed the uh to the premiere as well good old phil absolutely john do you want to tell us what they gave us with the synopsis for the boys

[00:17:01] season four episode four wisdom of the ages sure it's the premiere of firecrackers new vaught news show the truth bomb broadcasting live right across the street from starlight house and firecrackers hateful lies and public attacks finally push Annie to her breaking point

[00:17:20] costing Annie her credibility and powerful new ally meanwhile it's all hands on deck after the boys learn of homelander's horrifying plans for the future hui makes a desperate attempt to save his father from dying which leads to the first ever hui and kimiko team up while frenchy can't

[00:17:40] stand the guilt of lying to collin any longer and reveals the shocking truth about his past homelander seeking to rid himself of his humanity wants him for all pays a horrifying visit

[00:17:54] to the place he grew up yes yes he does oh yeah i think i think i texted chris directly after we watched uh this episode and went this is the toughest one that we've seen certainly this season

[00:18:07] and just to reference debba mr writers feedback earlier on where he was saying this season seems a little slower than the previous seasons i feel like they're having a little less fun this season that they're getting more aggressive and angry about the characters that are in here

[00:18:21] it's it's almost like because homelander revealed himself to the world that he can cut somebody in half and everybody will just say you're fine no problem you're not guilty of killing somebody

[00:18:30] it feels like they're stepping up the seriousness of what the the seven and vaught are doing in this world which makes everything feel a little more weighty this season um particularly with

[00:18:41] starlight story as well she's starting to be pulled down quite a lot um every character is having a very difficult storyline this season so it feels very weighty and i definitely felt in episode four

[00:18:52] last week we had three full episodes coming out in the same week this episode felt really heavy and very long um at the full hour yeah it certainly felt long i really noticed it but not because

[00:19:03] i didn't like it because for me this was like my favorite episode so far mainly because of the sheath tension uh in that laboratory yes i'd agree with that yeah um like i was just like what

[00:19:18] is going to happen and i think it's always to the point with the boys one of the views that i think we've all kind of had is that you know when ansony star when he's doing that well what is

[00:19:31] homelander going to do this sort of all powerful almost omnipotent being in the world of humans you know it's almost like omniman with um invincible absolutely the tension that he kind of brings to

[00:19:48] those scenes um is just immense and really kind of unsettling yes for for me anyway at least as as a viewer um and i think it's really good because it does kind of just really speak to that

[00:20:04] so i thought it was really good yeah i'm right there with you both and i'm probably we'll get into it a lot more in a bit but like for me they're doubling down on no no no no homelander is irredeemable

[00:20:20] they're gonna start painting it in big neon letters very soon yeah because they are really showing you he is the worst of the worst and yet some people and that's the parody aspect

[00:20:35] some people he killed he'd laser a man's head off and people are like yay the goat homelanders like you're still going to have that but they're really doubling down on no no no

[00:20:45] look and that's where when you have an actor like anthony star these scenes where he is pure psychopath yeah like in in the legitimate wording of it definition he is just pure psychopath like

[00:21:02] just absolutely exudes the tension yeah and that's the thing but they're also as part of that they're also showing you the boys are not good characters they're showing you what butchers like so all these people who have been like raving about some of these characters

[00:21:22] they're out no no look they're human yeah they air they are going to be problematic too yeah and that's what we're gonna get this right they're gonna really pull everyone down yeah

[00:21:34] and it makes way more sense if i didn't know that next season was the last season i'm like oh god like how are you what are you now you're like oh you're pulling everyone down

[00:21:47] you're gonna build every you're gonna build everyone up to that heights for the last season and that's how it kind of ends but yeah just it means a lot but let's get into it because

[00:21:56] i'm kind of pontificating about stuff i want to talk about with you guys through this just a really quick one before we go into it just because you mentioned anthony star's acting style

[00:22:04] there's a great um great chat with all the members of the cast about six them all together for vanity fair they were doing you know who do you know better and there was a great moment when

[00:22:14] they called out anthony star for his treatment of any of the producers or directors who try to give him a notion on his acting performance where he just where he stands up puts his hand behind

[00:22:22] his back and goes i'm not going to do that and then goes ahead and does whatever he was going to do with them with the scene uh whatever he had set up to do so anthony star knows the character

[00:22:32] homelander better than a director who comes in for four or five episodes and he is not willing to take any notes from anybody at all so this is absolutely his vision of homelander from the

[00:22:41] script so it's fascinating like it's interesting um and he jokes about it he's like yep that's me that's that's what they hired before so yeah that's that's what you get and he's been doing it

[00:22:52] so well for four seasons so but as we discuss our episodes we talk about the boys moment our protagonist moment for the episode the seven moment our antagonist moment and any other outstanding moments for the episode let's get into our boys moment to kick us off

[00:23:06] oh yoy oh yoy i'm gonna jump in with this one starlight star not so bright hey look at that fun are you happy yeah yeah yeah um pretty good for you christ that's my birthday present right there boys and girls this is for me kind of an interesting

[00:23:34] area that they're going into so we end up getting more and more so like we're finding out how i don't want to say mean but a bit of a brat that any january was so starlight was

[00:23:51] the kind of one of these soups who on the pageant circle as a kid so she was we learned that she was mean to firecracker yeah and was that bratty pageant kid and then has slowly tried to turn

[00:24:06] her life around but we do also know that she is and has done some somewhat irredeemable things in the past as well um in terms of some of the things with which she did on the the kind of gospel

[00:24:22] kind of tour as a kid and things like that and put some of the younger teams but what we see here now is she is being pushed to breaking point absolutely and they do that with the revelation

[00:24:38] via sage hacking her medical records essentially that she had an abortion her and hui got accidentally pregnant and they decided to go for an abortion and kept it themselves and

[00:24:51] i respect so much the writers doing this off screen off a camera like it makes it so much more more impactful as well versus just a forced kind of this episode where she's suddenly pregnant

[00:25:08] and like she has to go for an abortion and then go jump straight back into whatever the hell she was doing yeah 10 minutes later the fact that this was prior yeah and it was thing between the two of them

[00:25:19] they discussed it it was all good it's that discussion point is not the focus here the focus is that her privacy is basically stolen yeah and then she's pushed to a point where she breaks

[00:25:33] and it's amazing absolutely but how can dare firecracker do what she did like that is absolutely awful we've seen this weaponization of your beliefs and putting them on to somebody else that's exactly what's happening here with firecracker when she reveals that information but

[00:25:50] not only is it revealing private information it's taking someone's medical records and showing them to the world like regardless of what that is whether that's you know that they had that they had cancer when they were younger or something like that none of that is legal to expose

[00:26:04] and we have here firecracker taking this and weaponizing it when she's done way way worse in the real world things that are actually illegal as opposed to Annie having an abortion a medical procedure there's nothing here that should be allowed to be weaponized but that's

[00:26:22] the type of character we're dealing with here in firecracker and yeah completely understand why Annie goes over and beats the absolute hell out of her for pushing her that far yeah I mean I think it's also you know starlight is being taunted by firecracker throughout the day she's

[00:26:38] set up her truth bomb show right outside you know you've seen sister sage probably give her that information she did and you know as she's organizing the attack uh you know and it's just this

[00:26:51] attritional I mean it is bullying I mean the whole thing that modern sort of I guess media messaging and optics is all about bullying it's just like attritional lies or absolutisms you know it's the fact that people can't make mistakes and seemingly improve it's like you're damned once

[00:27:16] you're damned for effort and whatever their judgment is even if it's not something that they should be taking that approach anyway so I mean it's just the whole thing is just this

[00:27:27] continuous taunt and I like just the fact that it racks up through the course of this episode I mean it's even firecracker talks about um you know turns it against starlight after Billy has tried to effectively sort of corner her with an expose that she had relationships

[00:27:52] with a 15 year old at a bible camp you know so again equally something that is being exposed here for all the world to see from Billy butcher but she turns that against starlight as she kind of

[00:28:07] does this whole sort of humility and apology and how she found god that you know she's able to be and to turn things around but not starlight is totally contradictory it's double standards and all

[00:28:24] but it's not even that they've been accusing starlight's people of having a pedophilia ring across the road that's why they set up this whole presentation outside and they have evidence that

[00:28:35] she is a pedophile and she's able to pee or her way out of that this is what is so big about she just name drops god save salvation and suddenly it's fine and she turns you know this revelation

[00:28:51] you know against starlight again so it's just this incessant drip of the tap of just pure double standards and just really uncritical thinking and you know it sort of goes against starlight's first

[00:29:07] save you know that she killed a multiple of three all this kind of stuff even though all the seven have killed people and so it's just I love how this all develops through and through the episode

[00:29:23] and to the point then that you know starlight is kind of just taken to the breaking point but that's the thing where then you suddenly see all the politicians like singer saying you know

[00:29:38] I've got a distance myself from you we can't be aligned anymore because you've just lost the republican vote on my superhero act you have Newman you know using it to her advantage to question actually singers judgment for aligning with starlight so all this stuff is just so

[00:29:58] indicative of just modern comms and political comms in particular I mean it's it's so like well done I think in this episode yeah for me I find that you think that this is a parody you think this

[00:30:16] is amped up to 11 strangely it's not like this is the thing I've been I've been battling with a lot in terms of this season so before episodes in and I've looked at how they're making a parody I want

[00:30:33] to say they're making a party that they're not making a party they're just shining a light on a bit of a mirror on some of the things that have happened over the course of the last two three years around

[00:30:44] the globe and they're kind of showing like hey this is a trend and you think this just they basically they're doing a drama they are literally doing what you could call a political

[00:30:54] drama a corporate drama like this could be the West Wing with soups like it is that level because it is a dramedy and yet it's just with superheroes so everyone kind of and okay ultra violent yeah but

[00:31:11] still and what you see they do with Annie is they're going to push her and push her and push her and it's not going to end like this is the the the interesting thing that she has a target on her

[00:31:26] back absolutely and by the end of this she still has that target yeah so it's going to continue so I just want to see where it goes and how far she will allow herself to be pushed even further

[00:31:39] yeah because she's gonna break again but it just depends on what happens when she breaks absolutely absolutely good first point Chris what about your uh boys moment John mine's uh quite quick it's uh Frenchy effectively or Colin and Frenchy ultimately the truth comes out

[00:31:55] here and we have Frenchy learning the truth directly from Colin as he talks about how his parents were murders and and whilst he didn't see the person who killed them he was hiding under

[00:32:12] his bed so he saw their ankle scars effectively um so I kind of just like the little touch where Frenchy kind of puts the bedsheets over his uh legs um but ultimately as this episode goes through

[00:32:29] you know we've seen Frenchy becoming more and more tortures um the weight of everything that he has done in his past life as Serge as kind of you know is weighing heavy on him um you know you can

[00:32:44] see in a sense it's affecting his um relationship with uh Kimiko and it's kind of pushed him into this sort of weird relationship with with Colin in the sense that you know effectively Colin is a

[00:33:02] victim of of Frenchy he's allowed the situation to develop where you would say you know some separation would be uh more than ideal in this case but this ultimately comes to breaking point just with the

[00:33:17] tenderness of Colin um sort of helping Frenchy to recover from uh where he's been knocked out and injured by Ezekiel when he was infiltrating um Firecracker's trailer in this episode and he

[00:33:32] just can't kind of handle it anymore uh this guilt and and the suppressed truth so um tells Colin and of course like it doesn't as you would expect uh go particularly uh well after that I actually

[00:33:51] thought the scene where Colin is strangling Frenchy it looked really realistic I thought it was really really good um and I kind of like the in a sense the aftermath of this because you know Frenchy has

[00:34:04] kept this quiet to the point where not even Starlight knows so Colin has left um Starlight's headquarters of a charity and but he's he's not spoken to anyone he's kind of stunned down it's like is everything all right have you had a breakup just thinking it's part of

[00:34:22] sort of a lover's tiff thing rather than the fact that Frenchy's just informed Colin that it was in fact him that killed his parents yeah yeah and you even see that conversation M.M.'s kind of

[00:34:36] perking up near to it Kimiko's perking up near to it you know when Annie's asking the question to him what happened with Colin because they're all aware of how bad um a patch I guess Frenchy's

[00:34:46] going through at the moment um what's also really interesting in that scene with Frenchy and Colin with Colin strangling him it's only when Frenchy says do it to him yeah that Colin stops yeah

[00:34:56] takes his hands away from him says I never want to see you again so he's not going to give Frenchy the satisfaction of putting him out of his misery as well yeah and he says if I see you again

[00:35:05] then I will kill you yeah yeah it's almost that reverse punishment you know um if you if you kill someone that ends their pain if you allow them to live with that with that torment it's a

[00:35:17] worse punishment I guess um so it's an interesting an interesting choice for them there but uh but yeah really really interesting a really good moment from the episode definitely is that it for

[00:35:27] for your moment for your boys moment yeah absolutely yep um my boys moment I just want to talk about butcher versus Eekul uh in in the episode you mentioned already Frenchy um went inside of

[00:35:37] Firecracker's um trailer to try and find out some more information while she was up on stage to to sort out maybe plan to something uh to take her out um and he gets caught inside by Eekul who

[00:35:48] haven't seen since season one uh of the show um but Frenchy tries to play it off that he's he's your number one fan but gets beaten pretty badly by Eekul and thrown out the window

[00:35:59] uh but Billy over here isn't Billy goes in um to try and take out Eekul I must say there's a great uh little use of the nitrogen um fire what would you call it an extinguisher

[00:36:11] uh because we saw Billy use it to get in originally he knocked out a guard with it and then just put it down and this time we see him picking up the exact same extinguisher using it against the

[00:36:21] rubber arms of Eekul and smashing one of his arms and so there is it's again it's one of those ones we don't see them killing a lot of soups in the show um but we know they

[00:36:30] have the ability to do so we know that in the comic books definitely Billy will use anything at his uh at his grasp to kill a soup if they if they're if they're able to so here using

[00:36:40] the nitrogen I thought was a really good really good trick to use on the on super stretchy Eekul um but Eekul does have another arm and uses it to try and strangle uh Billy Butcher to death

[00:36:52] and then uh he blacks out while talking to Becca and wakes up with the entire place covered in blood and one of the things interestingly we talked about it a few times about these worms

[00:37:06] that seem to be going on inside of of Billy's brain um this season and we've seen them going in the native is uh in the native is body quite a lot or in around under the skin sorry

[00:37:17] yeah very ex-file-y yeah yeah so I wonder if they shot at in some way we know we took a sizable amount of of temp V in the past giving him superpowers so I wonder is there some kind of

[00:37:30] residual super-parer there that uh that Billy has because um it's a pretty explosive uh well that's it like I wonder like I said previously I wonder if it's something like Newman's daughter as well maybe slightly different but that similar kind of

[00:37:50] worm thing that came out of her mouth so again I I feel possibly given this scene given that he blacks out it looks like he's about to get strangled by Eekul and and then

[00:38:04] yeah it's I mean it looks like Eekul has just exploded yeah um like he's all over that trailer yeah literally so yeah the only other thing that's popped into my mind uh because it was

[00:38:17] mentioned on the tv uh in the commercials during um firecrackers uh truth bomb tv show that the the um Gadalcan 4 um which would include Marie the lead character from Gen V who had the power

[00:38:31] of exploding the blood inside people the body or controlling the blood at least um to many different ways uh that they're on the run at the moment it's just mentioned on screen uh on one of the uh one of the ads I wonder maybe Marie appeared and helped

[00:38:47] maybe yeah yeah no that could be it um I'm going down the route of does anyone remember um the X-Men character maggot um no okay right so there's an X-Men character called maggot

[00:39:02] and he's this big beefy guy and his kind of mutant power is his two maggots that basically live outside of him but also crawl up inside him and they eat and can destroy anything but he

[00:39:17] communicate with them they talk to him pathically and I'm like okay maybe not exactly but maybe the temp V has created these worms that now grant essentially are able to come out and communicate they basically talk to butcher they communicate with them well they're taking on

[00:39:40] different aspects of different people that is the like yeah beca beca is the worm and the worm has the power the worm is able to kind of like multiply or grow to 10 times the size and or just comes

[00:39:54] out like feet and then shrinks down goes back into butcher I can see it being something crazy like that maybe um but yeah I'm sure maggots an X-Men character it sends really like a character for

[00:40:06] the boys cover book 99 9 percent maggot X-Men and we will see it is maggot yes MA GG OTT there you go go on your maggot the honey X-Men he's part of gen X and the dark X-Men few others there you

[00:40:25] he has two big maggots that kind of go in there so they couldn't even do a parody of that for the boys it's already a boys character in the Marvel Universe but yeah okay I was gonna say apart from

[00:40:36] the the obvious at the X-Men and the boys seemingly are closer than we thought yeah with two maggots that can squirm inside of the buff man yeah that's like straight from the pages of the

[00:40:49] boys exactly okay well I'll look at the X-Men very differently yeah certainly maggot honestly that's almost like a DC name you know but there you have it that's what I think what's happening

[00:41:07] yeah okay no I'm I'm I'm agnostic on this front and as I say I just wonder if it's to do with you know sort of the violence it was sort of Newman's daughter and but yeah equally it could be

[00:41:20] telepathic maggots yeah and I'd love to see if it was Marie from from Gen V to tie in there that show even more closely to this three theories all probably very wrong let's get on to our antagonist

[00:41:33] moment guys the seven moment for the episode you're not the real heroes I'm the real hero that's very appropriate for this episode really is not having homerander saying that phrase for this one for our seven moment for the episode who wants to kick off their seven moment first

[00:41:51] John do you want to kick yours off yeah I'll go first I think certainly it's got a lot of this episode it is homerander going back to the start to see good old Frank Marty and Barbara

[00:42:06] although I suspect they wish they weren't seeing him as he wants to understand his his truth just bring you know chocolate whale cake so that's good as I said before is like this is really really

[00:42:24] tense and we just don't know when he's going to do something absolutely horrific um like vengeance or revenge is always part of his plan it's never justice and as never conversation or information either yeah no I mean he's there he knows what he wants to do

[00:42:44] it is revenge for and equally for the really horrible stuff that these people have done to I think that's what's quite good here I mean this is kind of classic people in white coats following orders or people in society following orders thinking that they haven't done something

[00:43:07] wrong because a kid is different now actually by the end of it you hear Barbara almost suggesting that he was inherently just violent and even as a baby in the sense that you know

[00:43:26] she says that he lazes his way out of the womb killing his mother effectively as well as three doctors in the process and but nonetheless you get these different stories throughout this

[00:43:40] episode as it becomes tense or intense and I mean it starts off tense and this is the thing you know you hear the security guard down in this lab saying you know we've lost contact with the

[00:43:53] surface and then the lift coming down and you know hey presto there's homelander with a chocolate whale cake um and it suddenly is like oh okay like I'm breathe so maybe you know

[00:44:05] but what's he doing upstairs and that's out you know out of view off screen and then gradually you know it just starts picking on those kind of heads of different areas and we you know we

[00:44:20] get carbonized frank being baked at you know 240 degrees in an oven coming from the waste paper basketball story and I think with him but it's also with Marty and you know his missing masturbation

[00:44:39] it's all about you know well you were the you were doing this to me and he describes what they're doing it's pretty pretty grim and they're like well I don't remember this so both of them are like

[00:44:51] I don't remember yeah and as soon then as it gets to the point where he's beginning to squeeze them and give them hints about exactly what he's going to do it's like well I'm sorry and he's like

[00:45:05] but why are you how are you sorry if you don't remember what you did or you know or you're sorry now and it's always I was just doing my job like you know and he just pushes that

[00:45:20] squirm envelope in both these cases yeah and whilst you know Frank and Marty don't escape this Barbara I don't know whether she escapes it or not but she's in the bad room with all the other members of her

[00:45:37] staff down the dead and eviscerated home under leaving in the lift covered in blood but as I say I think the whole thing here is they did horrendous stuff I mean even barbers were you know their greatest

[00:45:56] triumph over him was that they got him to be obedient because he needed approval yeah he hated disappointment he wanted to be loved yeah it was the psychology of it because they could

[00:46:13] never compete with his strength and physicality and I just thought you know in a sense I do feel sorry for her mother but he's never looking for justice to make these people accountable yeah

[00:46:32] he is just extracting revenge yeah so I just really really enjoyed this like understanding more about her mother going back to the start and it's that realization that he is in a sense beyond human

[00:46:46] yeah absolutely that he is distinct he is apart and that is the you know one of the big things here that he learns yeah is that you know he says even though it didn't damage me like when he was in

[00:46:58] the orphan yeah it still was excruciatingly painful yeah and you sat there playing table football or playing a player football yeah you were sat there playing basketball, been basketball effectively exactly and you know as my tears sizzled on you know my face yeah there's pretty horrendous for him

[00:47:19] it is but absolutely horrific and you know there's this tendency as we said I think even some of the feedback that you could tell the story and tell the backstory of Holenlander and feel sorry

[00:47:28] for him but that's not the point you know we've talked many times about the idea that this show is about Nazis versus real people, Nazis were taking over the world and the Nazis are

[00:47:38] vult here this scene here to me anyway the Nazi scientists have accomplished their goal which was back in World War II to create a super soldier they've created that super soldier which is Holenlander now he leads them he's taken over from Hitler effectively what do you do then

[00:47:54] if you've created the perfect human the one that has all of the power how do you control them and the way they decided to work on them and control them is to create this need for

[00:48:06] approval and love which is the only thing that is keeping him in check you know it's a really interesting moment when Barbara was going yeah but the power that you had from the moment of

[00:48:15] birth you could have just stood up and walked out through a wall or flown out through the ceiling there's nothing you had in here that was containing you inside any of the doors or walls

[00:48:23] it was only the pressure to get approval and to not disappoint us as our only control mechanism that we have on you and it feels like that moment when he's walking out at the end covered in the

[00:48:34] blood of the final scientists that are there leaving Barbara behind in the entrails of her colleagues it feels like he's going there I told you that's what you created look what you created and then he's walking away satisfied with himself that he's telling them you created me

[00:48:48] like this and now I don't need your approval and I don't need your love anymore so you have no control over me yeah I mean it is he feels self-satisfied when he's walking out there's nothing to be satisfied about he hasn't accomplished anything he's just murdered

[00:49:02] lots of other people that's over the Nazis I guess you know two kind of you know like Frank in the orphan because I think that's the other thing you know these points are really kind

[00:49:12] of tense as he's doing it you know and he kind of purposefully misses his last shot at the bin basketball and says I knew he probably would have got that and then you would have been saved

[00:49:24] even the deal he's making with Frank he interjects and just undercuts it and you know and you have Frank sort of putting at them in that way puts his hand against the glass and it just starts to

[00:49:36] blister I was just like oh my goodness and even then like with Marty has got a whole film in the groin and in fairness to Barbara I thought she was quite level headed I was like

[00:49:48] I'm thinking a lot of control here Barbara you know the way she's speaking to him as though she's not absolutely petrified of him and and she's just like put him out of his misery and

[00:50:00] got just him crushing his head that you've got one of the other lab attendants but that's exactly it it's homeland we're doing it the most gruesome way possible as well it's not

[00:50:10] put him out of his misery it's put out of the misery in a really gruesome way to terrify the rest of the people in the room again you know yeah and well as he says you know I forgive you

[00:50:20] as he then kills him yeah oh great yeah that's great you know that that's of no use to poor old Marty yeah he was also a horrible man exactly exactly and this is the point it's like

[00:50:33] horrible people breed horrible people you know because their whole environment is horrible like it's just everything you know if you have that 24-7 you're gonna be a horrible person absolutely yeah it's nurture versus nature which a lot of this shows always been not all soups are

[00:50:55] bad just the majority of them yeah because of the nurture that they have found through boss but it's an interesting in this case Barbara's actually saying didn't matter about the nurture

[00:51:05] and as you were born and killed three people in the room and your mother coming out of the body there's really nothing we could do other than try and tame you in some way and direct you at

[00:51:14] our enemies direct you the way we wanted you to go but you were always bad you're the power that you had was too much really inside yeah and the thing about this is we also we have

[00:51:25] learned that 100% they tried everything they tested his limits they tried to find a way to control which we know butchering the rest of the boys are doing like they found nothing for years

[00:51:40] the only thing that controlled homelander was able to take down or weaken home lander it's his need for approval and love exactly yeah exactly no and look it's I'm very interested to see where they go from this because they've kind of to a degree taking the reins off

[00:51:59] home lander a bit further yeah absolutely he didn't even need that approval anymore it doesn't need that love anymore you know we said we said last episode when he was talking to his shattered

[00:52:08] self in the mirror and he was and that shattered self was telling him to break that final connection to you man actually that need for love break that and then you can go on to bigger things

[00:52:19] what's next now that he's done that exactly but I think that's all for the home lander piece do we want to move on to your bit Derek yeah my seven moment for the episode is about I suppose the

[00:52:34] resolution to what we saw at the end of last episode with sister sage and and the deep and why she actually slept which makes so much worse ends doesn't she was lobotomized at the time

[00:52:45] when he walked in having a moment of relaxation to herself watching really terrible TV and eating eating an outback blooming onion these are all signs to sister sage that she's lobotomized but deep misreads the room and then has sex with her this time she's saying

[00:53:01] she's willing to have sex with the deep even though he absolutely repulses her if he'll just do the lobotomy for her I thought that was so harsh where in in vault tower she just

[00:53:12] you know you've got the deep coming onto her factory because it's like oh okay you know I enjoyed that here's a you know competition for ambrosia spasically you know uh here's uh

[00:53:24] neglected octopus um and like she just looks at him and goes I find you repulsive and I was just like only the deep could sort of elicit that type of response so I did like that I mean again just

[00:53:45] the whole lobotomy at the end I was just like oh my god okay we're gonna go with it it's the most awful thing to watch there's a scene from um from Star Trek first contact where you

[00:53:56] see Jean-Luc Picard getting turned into a borg for the first time and there's a pin pierces his eyeball and it's always been the most uncomfortable scene that I've seen I've seen in movies and

[00:54:07] right here having to sit watching the deep lobotomize sage through an eyeball is so difficult to watch it's so realistically done as everything in the show tends to be when they're doing this this grossed stuff especially where she's going oh just move it slightly over to the left

[00:54:24] because I don't want to be blind by the end of this I just want to be lobotomized and the reason she's doing it is because her brain is grows so fast that it will grow back and she'll

[00:54:32] only has a couple of hours of being dumbed down a little bit but just wanted to call that what out as my as my antagonist moment because we had no idea what that was last episode we all thought

[00:54:42] she may be murdered ambrosius but it's actually a personal thing that she needs to kill some for brain to be able to stand to being in the same room as the teeth. Coffee and vodka had kind of identified what that bloody rod was.

[00:54:56] That's right yes during the week coffee vodka had sent me a message saying they'd worked out what the what the implement was so yeah. Yeah she is annoyed her brain grows back. But he takes her to Flavortown so that's the main thing.

[00:55:15] Absolutely that two life cruise song was just perfectly placed there. Let's get on to our other outstanding moments from the episode. Thank you. You have five minutes to make your openings. You guys haven't heard that one before.

[00:55:34] Well I've only got five minutes okay I'm gonna make it fast. Right I'm gonna jump in very quickly with Huey actually forgives a train. Yeah. So Huey is growing as like again we're seeing growth in these characters it's

[00:55:49] really interesting like this is something he has carried for four seasons. Since episode one. What's like the opening scene of episode one is a train running straight through Huey's girlfriend at that time. Pretty much yep in slow motion and he then later on gave her him a handshake.

[00:56:06] Oops my bad and like multiple like they should not be allies they should not they shouldn't be no forgiveness there but Huey is growing and he's learning to do it and he says so as much he's like he wasn't going to do it.

[00:56:25] What's the point in holding the grudge anymore? Yeah. And this is partly because he is also a train is giving him the B company he's stolen from Homelander put himself in the risk to save Huey's dad. Yeah.

[00:56:43] That like it's going to be it's going to be have an effect on the rest of the season in terms of how this happens what happens how his dad is alive because his dad's brain dead and this is the only way back right now.

[00:56:59] I have to say I felt very much on the side of Billy hearing that conversation I can see Billy but you're going what the hell are you doing why would you want to give your dad

[00:57:08] V under any circumstance we all know we have to eventually lose parents it does have to happen it's an awful thing that Huey had a missed phone call from his dad and didn't get the

[00:57:18] opportunity to say goodbye I get it but look what V did to him and look what it's doing to butcher why do you think that will actually resolve the problem for Hucini. Yeah absolutely.

[00:57:28] Yeah but it's such a big moment after four seasons that Huey and I train of everybody of the show they're intrinsically connected to each other and this is what pulled Huey into the boys this is what started everything off was a train running through his girlfriend

[00:57:42] on the street you know so having him be finally forgive a train is a big moment for the show. Yeah well I think that moves on to my other outstanding moment because now another pairing include that are intrinsically linked together which is a train and Ashley

[00:58:04] and I love the fact that it comes from the fact that a train does go to get the compound V but it's in Homelander's apartment he's holding it all for security and he's he's busted basically

[00:58:21] by by Ashley but I like the fact that a train just sort of does his late you know sonic boom out of the the conversation with Ashley and comes back to say you know what you're leaving floaters in Homelander's toilet so she's just being really petty.

[00:58:39] Yes but this becomes that you know if he knew that that was you he would kill you so we've got to help each other out and not say anything so I like just the fact that we have you know

[00:58:53] the double A's here and this effectively teaming up to protect one another to help one another out and I'm kind of looking forward to seeing how that goes because you have Ashley who is just

[00:59:13] fantastic but horrendous you know we saw her with with the the vault news anchor last week you know she's lost to her she's fairly self-centred and so is a train but maybe a train is starting to

[00:59:32] you know just think about being a better person given what's happened with his brother yeah and all the way through absolutely and how he's being treated by both as well and by

[00:59:48] Homelander yeah absolutely he's changing sides but I will say yeah I love the team up I love the two of them together but um I will say I was very nervous for a train the whole time that

[00:59:59] he was in that hotel that room of Homelander was going uh do you not remember how many cameras Homelander has on every single person in that building um do you not think he's going to be able

[01:00:08] to notice that you went into his room and took some v out of there um yeah yeah remember he can smell like yeah he just smelled butcher off um off Ryan exactly so he's not going to notice a train

[01:00:22] and a floater well absolutely yeah that certainly puts puts um Ashley uh end the firing line as well if even if he doesn't have cameras in there um he'll be able to smell her uh from miles away

[01:00:36] absolutely I mean I guess I guess you could just hide it I mean it is a bit tenuous the team up because she's left the floater in the toilet but like she's and he's stealing v yeah that's

[01:00:50] quite a big difference between the two but again he's twisted it to make it silent they're both doing bad things it's kind of like what's the dark night it's not the team up we needed but it's

[01:00:58] the team up we deserve yes we do I think um for sure yeah yeah uh good stuff I want to return for my it's that my other it's starting moment I want to return um to the uh v the injection of v

[01:01:11] to Huey's dad um which is the end the cliffhanger at the end of the episode I suppose because it's Huey's mom that injects the v um it seems like Billy has gotten through to Huey

[01:01:21] um to convince him not to give the v to his dad but it is quite interesting because we know that Huey's mom in a very tangential way I kind of think actually everybody in America works in

[01:01:31] some way uh for Vought but she works tangentially for Vought and has been defending them in the first couple of episodes in a way yeah yeah she you know has this belief I guess that Superhero

[01:01:41] is a great like most of America does but Huey's seen the underbelly of them um so he decides not to give the v to uh to his dad and then his mom injects him um keeping him alive we see the

[01:01:53] blue liquid going through the tubes into into Huey and him waking up Huey senior um waking up so I don't know did she come in with the same plan as Huey and bring her own v along somehow

[01:02:03] she can access to it through I don't know the the company that provides her uh cosmetics and road oil for the products I don't know uh Seedob but it's one of those moments where

[01:02:14] you go ah Huey's got to his senses he's not going to give his dad v what the hell he's still getting the v anyway um so yeah well just how random the the powers can be from the v you're

[01:02:28] just like okay what the hell is Hue senior gonna have here yeah you know absolutely will this really be good from probably not probably not thank you for a reason yeah absolutely so

[01:02:43] overall guys what did you think of the episode um final thoughts I absolutely loved it this show for me the season I should say for me very know the show I absolutely adore the season is

[01:02:55] really dragging the characters down putting them in tough and both emotional settings but also um really putting a I said as I said earlier it's parodying life with us also just very much

[01:03:10] putting a mirror up to society at the moment that's some of the best writing if you can do that then for me it's like you've got those chances for Emmys and stuff like that where you can do

[01:03:21] outstanding performances and you look at Anthony star in this episode the pure crazy in his eye that's acting like that's an alter if you will can you imagine uh and now on the Emmys for best

[01:03:40] male performance in a in a superhero show or best male performance in an action an action show Anthony star and it's jerk off for me jerk off me right now i'm gonna blow blow you in half oh

[01:03:51] no it's like shucking a little mushroom yeah you can see that now on the emi yeah there you go at city star um but yeah you're totally right chris one of the things that are really accomplishing

[01:04:00] really well for me this season is this cast is huge yeah and already by the fourth episode everybody's going through something quite significant yeah everybody yeah just so even the deep and how he's being treated by people around him even that it's probably the lice of

[01:04:15] the stories but even that's quite a big thing to go through for that character so they're doing a really good job and yeah this episode I felt was quite tough to get through because of the

[01:04:22] tension in in homeland or wasn't hugely excited to watch those scenes the second time was watching through for notes I was going oh I don't want to watch the tension again but that's a really

[01:04:32] good thing it's not a criticism the episode is excellent episode really liked the episode but it was still tough to watch yeah after four seasons of the show jill how are you sad you have a reading for the episode yeah I really really enjoyed this

[01:04:44] episode i'd give it five sizzling tears and shucking mushrooms out of five um like I think it was just unsettling like yeah start to finish um I found yet there was the obvious tension of

[01:05:02] home under going back to the start and his dealings with Frank Marty and Barbara but again it is that looking away and I'm like that's what's so good it's like you just don't quite know

[01:05:17] and then you you know after it's happened you go you know he's just the most unredeemable character ever but vort as an institution is the most unredeemable um organization in this show so they're both um you know you're saying nature versus nurture the nurture was horrendous

[01:05:39] therefore homelander is horrendous exactly and he is just simply getting revenge and not justice but at the same time underlying this is this real life unsettling unsettling sort of tone of vort in

[01:05:56] you know the real world this the plan the strategy to effectively lie lie lie to undermine your opponents whatever they are there's no mutual respect here it's like that's just been lost and I mean

[01:06:16] you know here is a comic book show telling you exactly how it's become in you know effectively the one remaining superpower and the globe is that democrats and republicans you know christians or non-christians can't simply just speak to one another with respect discuss

[01:06:41] observe their differing opinions and move on instead it becomes this powerful attritional and all's versus them this polarization and everything to hate they're actually just telling you how it is and how it's framed and how it becomes like that and it's just really

[01:07:03] unsettling so yeah absolutely thought this was uh the best episode so far of the season so five sizzling tears and shucking mushrooms shucking fellow boys and girls get your minds out because of shucking mushrooms action stuff do you know what goes really well with mushrooms
