[00:00:00] This is The Boys Season 4 Podcast on TV Podcast Industries and we're talking about Season 4, Episode 3. We'll keep the red flags flying here. Sorry, I have to do Coney Island to get those hot dogs. You're lying. No, I'm not.

[00:00:17] You've been at William Butchers. I can smell them on you. I wanted to see him. He's going through a tough time. Why do you care when you have everything here?

[00:00:30] You have a home? You have a father? I've given you everything that I ever wanted and it's still not good enough for you. Why? You're ungrateful? You go behind my back? You lie to me? Why? Why am I not good enough for you? No, I... It's just Butcher.

[00:00:58] What? You love him so much? When did you get him to be your dad? No, I don't want him to be my dad. You're like... Enough! Enough!

[00:01:32] Welcome back boys and girls. You're listening to TV Podcast Industries and we're talking about The Boys Season 4, Episode 3, all of your red flags. No, no, it's called We'll Keep the Red Flags Flying Here. I am one of your hosts, Chris, the ultimate in red flags.

[00:01:49] I am also joined by my illustrious co-hosts. Hello there fellow boys and girls. I am John. The Baptiste. And I am your final co-host, Derek.

[00:02:02] Yeah, we're doing an epic recording session but we're probably going to break these out into three individual episodes so you can listen to them. You're a ledger in between Episode 3 and Episode 4, right?

[00:02:12] Yes, exactly because you never know how you want to binge or not binge or break down. Strongly suggest that you like a fine wine. You savor these episodes because it's going to be these seven days. Yeah. Until you get the next course in The Boys Season 4.

[00:02:30] I will say, I'm sure we've said this about Prime Video and how they released their show. This is my favorite way of releasing a show where you get three episodes in one go that you can digest and get yourself set up for the season

[00:02:41] and then you go into weekly so you can talk about it with your friends, get every cut, hold partners and every talk about it again and then you get the weekly discussion for a little while.

[00:02:48] As somebody shows that have just dropped and been left behind, we covered Dead Boy Detectives which was all just dumped in one day

[00:02:56] and was a great show by the end of the season but it was just watched over the weekend and people just forgot it was even there. Fall Out I feel was kind of the same. They threw it all out on Prime Video which they don't normally do.

[00:03:06] They put it all out in a day apparently because they thought fans of Fall Out would work out the ending on Reddit if they put it out weekly. I don't think you can win with that strategy when you put this much money into a show.

[00:03:19] So I'm glad of this strategy for Prime Video for The Boys. I think they've learned their lesson on that one. I think Season 2 will definitely be this old school Prime Video release schedule

[00:03:33] but we're not here to talk about Prime Schedule because only the basis in who we trust. We're glad that he has Prime Video to make these great shows.

[00:03:45] Exactly. In his dollar-dollar bill y'all we trust because he funds some of the great content that we're going to discuss right now in this episode which is a discussion on Episode 3 of The Boys Season 4.

[00:04:00] So Derek would you want to tell us who gave us what, where, when and how with the details for this episode? Absolutely the showrunner of course is Eric Kripke. This is based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Derek Robertson.

[00:04:13] The executive producer for the show again are Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. And this episode was written by Ellie Monahan. She wrote episodes in Season 1 and Season 2 and has been on the writing team for all three seasons.

[00:04:23] For US fans who may not be aware, she's also the daughter of the well-known journalist Katie Couric. I don't know whether you guys know Katie Couric. She's a mainstay on TV as a journalist in the US.

[00:04:35] You'd see her on Morning Shows, you'd see her on News Shows all across the US. But that's where Ellie Monahan came from. And this episode is directed by Fred Toy. I kind of feel like we should just follow his career when we're picking shows to cover.

[00:04:49] He's done almost every show that we've covered he'd done at least one episode. But most recently he did three episodes of the excellent show gun. Such a top quality show if you haven't had the chance to watch it.

[00:05:02] It's on Disney Plus and Europe and it's on Hulu in the US. Absolute top quality show and Fred Toy is a brilliant director for that show. It's great to see him being able to do a show as in depth and detailed as show gun

[00:05:14] and also doing a show like this, this comic book, unrealistic worlds like The Boys. Absolutely, he's so good and done so much stuff that we've followed. I feel like we're going to have this moment where he breaks out, does his first movie

[00:05:30] and he's suddenly going to be up there with some of the big directors out there in movie land. Wouldn't it be interesting to see what he does? Hey John, do you want to tell us what they gave us with your synopsis for The Boys Season 4 Episode 3? Sure.

[00:05:46] Homelander inducts two new members into the seven, Sister Sage and Firecracker. And as part of the personnel changes, Sister Sage will effectively become Vought's CEO relegating Ashley to the role of a corporate mascot. Meanwhile Billy Butcher and his old war comrade and CIA contact Joe Kessler

[00:06:08] hatch a plan to bring Ryan to their side in the fight against Homelander. Annie confronts Firecracker over her anti-starlight rhetoric but Firecracker gives Annie a painful reminder about her own past. The deep makes a romantic connection with someone surprising

[00:06:25] while Mother's Milk recruits an important news source for Intel at Vought. Friends she gets high to cope with the guilt of lying to Colin while he accompanies Kimiko on a mission to confront demons of her own

[00:06:40] and we get into the Christmas spirit with the spectacular ice skating musical Vought on Ice. Vought on Ice is definitely my favourite moment from this episode but I'm sure we'll get into that as we talk about our protagonist antagonist and outstanding moments from the episode.

[00:07:01] Yes, let us get into The Boys moments. Shall I kick it off? I feel there's a pun in them. I think you might. And so does Billy Butcher. Yes, foosball friends Billy and Ryan connect. I really enjoyed this and also how they get to the foosball

[00:07:30] you know old school game but they get through the video game the Mortal Kombat-esque game called The Tournament of Heroes where they obviously online, chat to one another in order to meet up on the basis of Joe Kessler wanting to try and get bring Ryan into

[00:07:56] effectively the CIA team, effectively wanting him to become to be recruited and be an asset because he's not an asset then you know we're gonna have to either figure out how to kill him effectively if we can't train him.

[00:08:15] So I really, you know in a sense you know is this going against Billy possibly but as he has that contact with Ryan as they chat about things as Billy sees how really uncomfortable Ryan is, how upset he is

[00:08:35] certainly over the stuntman Koi that he killed in the last episode you know they begin to connect here. I mean you know Ryan is really quite like upset. Distraught. Yeah, distraught like he really is and you know and Billy has this conflict

[00:08:57] of whether he's gonna recruit him or not but ultimately he decides really in a sense to be his dad, his step dad and to play this game of foosball with his step son and you know Ryan has in a sense I like the fact that this triangle

[00:09:22] of Billy, Ryan and Homelander have got all these questions about themselves. Billy talks about I have this habit of pushing people away but I want to make things right with the one part of your mom who is still alive

[00:09:39] with a great line, really really good and you know Ryan is like I wouldn't want to know me if I was anyone else, if I were you you know he's so down on himself and I guess that comes from Homelander to some degree despite all of Homelander's providence.

[00:10:01] We kind of mentioned about last season Billy butchers treatment of Ryan the words he said to him to push him away and Homelander's been using those words repeated over and over again to Ryan you know your father hates you

[00:10:13] your father thinks you're nothing over and over again to reinforce and kind of push Ryan to become and mold him to become like Homelander so Ryan's heard this so much now that he believes it about himself more than believing that Homelander has his back

[00:10:29] he believes that what Billy Butcher said about him was right I wouldn't want to know me if I was anybody else you know it's an amazing moment also again to give credit for Carl Urban we often talk about the funny lines

[00:10:40] that he says, the big violence moments that he has but there's a really interesting look on his face when Ryan tells him about killing Kai there's a mix of emotions that Carl Urban gets across here

[00:10:54] where he's seeing his son going through this massive pain about accidentally killing someone and he's also got that in his brain that effectively what Billy Butcher does is he goes around and kills soups because they kill humans

[00:11:06] and he's seeing his son saying to him I killed a human on my first time out so it feels like there's a little wash that comes across Carl Urban's face kind of going ooh now you're on my list

[00:11:18] you've almost already made it to my list of soups I have to kill to protect the human race I just thought it was a really interesting little moment between the two of them there beyond that as well it's 100% props to Carl Urban on this

[00:11:33] he sees that Homelander has talked about there's nothing humans are nothing they're play things we've talked about this already and he's like don't worry about killing them Butcher has said similar things in the past not just about soups about anyone he killed multiple men like people

[00:11:52] he thinks that he's like you can see him wanting to almost parrot what Homelander has said which is don't worry it's just you kill someone it's fine I've done this, everyone does it and like he said something similar to Huey

[00:12:07] he has said that to Huey like you have to kill certain people so you could see him wanting to but instead he just does take that fatherly high road and puts the bickies in the bin yes he does, the laced biscuits that he made

[00:12:29] it is a really interesting moment where he's trying to convince Ryan to eat the cookies it's your mother's recipe and then thanks better of it towards the end and says to him oh I just put too much sugar in them

[00:12:43] but you kind of mentioned about the discussion between Joe Caster this character played by by Jeffrey Morgan in the show here the former colleague of Billy Butcher it is interesting the conversation before Billy goes to bring Ryan in is you'll bring him in right and he'll be fine

[00:13:00] he'll be safe with you and Joe assures him he's not going to use him in the army basically and Billy says you wouldn't do that to your own son right and then they come back after Billy has chosen not to take Ryan and have a conversation again

[00:13:16] and Joe Caster admits actually I'd be perfectly happy if my son joined the fight and if he died I'd be proud of what he did and we will have to choose to either train or kill Ryan

[00:13:25] so Joe Caster again just the reason why I'm saying it is just he's an untrustworthy character even though he's someone from Billy Butcher's past he's someone that will again another person in Billy's life that will say anything to get the job done

[00:13:39] so it's an interesting little trade of his definitely until we see someone else interact with Joe I am not 100% that he is there right interesting again because we've seen Becca like there and talk actually to him and you could almost see this as two different sides

[00:14:05] of Billy's fractured psyche right now which is the one who's just there for the government to kill the soups the government, the CIA trained one and Becca, the heart, the soul of what was his heart and soul for Butcher so until I see someone interact

[00:14:26] I'm like maybe, maybe and he did walk in at exactly the right time to Billy because he'd lost the other person but Mallory who was the person he was going to deliver Ryan to so he comes in exactly the right time a former war buddy

[00:14:45] interesting theory Chris I like it I like my theories Chris do you have your boys protagonist moment for this episode? I do I want to very quickly kind of discuss Annie and how she confronts Firecracker in the 7th Era

[00:15:06] it starts the downward spiral that is going to be Annie it is showing that she is human she is not just that beacon of light in the world and that she doesn't want to be that but also shows we know about Starlight's mom pageant kind of history

[00:15:29] no sorry not her mom pageant her pageant history as a kid in the super pageant kind of the circuit and her mom pushing her and teaching her to be less than great we've known about that this is what we're starting to see then

[00:15:49] how she was the different person a different and how that's going to literally bite her on the ass because we have seen now that Firecracker was ignited by a single moment in her past to basically have a vendetta against Annie all for albeit a terrible thing

[00:16:16] but yeah just I found it really interesting you can see one very quick thing I'll say about Erin is she's really she's really grown into the role of Annie January this year this year in last season where she is now she is portraying some really deep emotion

[00:16:40] especially in this scene because you see it like the realization of what it was and then that kind of like just being broken like she has no come back she cannot argue against this absolutely because effectively what brought

[00:16:59] Starlight to go and confront Firecracker was her going on TV saying that she slept with the seven to get her position in the seven and she's going how dare you say that and the button and to the public how dare you say that's the reason I got there

[00:17:09] and Firecracker rightly has turned around to her and go you ruined my entire life by saying something exactly the same and I was only 12 and from that point onwards everybody treated me like I had done what you told them I'd done because everybody believes in what you say

[00:17:27] you know it was a real truth bomb wasn't it really absolutely a real one for the first time for Firecracker but I think it's a nice little twist isn't it that in a sense she's spouting propaganda most of the time or conspiracies

[00:17:43] but in this instance this is close to her heart it's personal because it happened to her and it's the truth bomb this Starlight in a sense doesn't want to hear exactly but should and does yeah she absolutely should take it on board

[00:18:01] you know it's something that she can't deny that that's in her past you know so yeah really interesting moment in the episode yeah and that's really what I wanted to kind of lean into because I'm interested to see

[00:18:16] what they do to the character of kind of Starlight throughout this season because they're really starting to push her in towards say like basically standing in front of being Starlight again yeah on the steps after the two Starlighters were cleared of basically the deaths of

[00:18:38] the other the homelanders so they're really going to start pushing her I feel in a way that's going to get the crack if you will well absolutely but there's also the other side of it again we often talk about the show being the political parody

[00:18:57] you know and it's that idea that Starlight is standing up on the opposite side to Homeland our Homeland are his murdered people he's destroyed families he's killed people all across the world and Annie is the one that's standing up against him

[00:19:09] she's supposed to be the innocent pure light of the good side versus the evil dark Nazi side of Homeland yet if this gets resurfaced in Annie's mind it's just a bad she has done something that she couldn't forgive herself for in her past so it's almost like that

[00:19:28] the thing we see in politics all the time where we see people trying to challenge the worst of society saying you don't want them to lead and then something some skeleton has pulled out of their closet not near as bad but it's a skeleton

[00:19:41] and they will run ravage on it and that's what I feel might happen with Annie there's no resolution here in the episode that Firecracker will step back and won't continue to push Annie she's telling her I will continue to push this

[00:19:56] until the world knows that you're a mean girl and that's what Annie can't reconcile herself with even though it's nothing as bad as the seven have done yeah and offside it's just a mean girl and I'm like yeah that's what it's gonna be yeah

[00:20:12] I mean I think what's really good about this aspect is that you know you forget or in this case Annie has forgotten that she used to be like them she did bad things she may have refused not to kill people but you know in her own way

[00:20:32] and when she was younger that idea that yes she is the light but she also has a darkness and they kind of weave in and weave out or you know different levels and you know she's kind of moved away from that darker side of her personality

[00:20:51] which was selfish which was bullying and so on like that is what Firecracker has experienced and it has gradually moved and you know into being a better person yeah exactly but the revisit of it is that jolt for her which is really good I think

[00:21:12] yep she's just standing gets absolutely trashed with Frenchie and chemical as well yeah and I'm gonna move on to my protagonist moment because I want to talk about Frenchie and chemical because taking out her vengeance on a cell that she's found of the shining light in their city

[00:21:33] we talked about last episode where you know there's always been this possibility in the back that can become the punisher of the boys universe where she has a real reason to go after the people that did this to her that trafficked her to the country

[00:21:51] that treated the way they treated her and here finding just this small cell of a few people and bringing Frenchie along for back up I think the scene was fantastic because we have another comedy moment along with a very brutally violent moment that the boys does so well

[00:22:07] we've had you know we've had the cartoon violence in the past we've had the puppet violence in Gen V which was incredible and here we have Frenchie off his face on drugs but what he describes he's high on a slight melange of hallucinogenics

[00:22:22] but it's so bad he sees her face melting before the fight and then as she hits people we see rubber ducks appearing bubbles appearing everywhere really fun to see that but he has his own meltdown while she's dealing with her past as he's brought into the room

[00:22:39] with all the people that he's murdered it's the office building of the boys that he's brought into yeah and Colin is sitting in the middle of this group of his family admonishing I guess Frenchie for what he's done and then again Frenchie being surrounded by all the people

[00:22:57] he's killed in the past and another moment with Cherry again saying you know he's off the leash now but how is he going to be able to reconcile what he's done in his past I think this whole scene is

[00:23:10] I don't know emblematic of what the boys does so well they can have a bit of comedy in here they can have some really obscure hallucinogen driven jokes and they can also get to the heart of a massive problem for someone with this dark past that Frenchie has

[00:23:28] and do a great job of balancing it all within a you know a 10 minute scene yeah really loved it exactly the same I think it was some of the best reminiscent for me of Happy the TV show with Pat Noswald and Co where it was basically that cartoon-esque

[00:23:45] very violent but very cartoon-esque at the same time and we see Camiko with what is like stops like about to kill someone who is then pushed off yeah which again then is going to I think feed into her story that we talked about last week exactly

[00:24:05] and her healing from the trauma of being kind of human trafficked yeah because Camiko escaped from the situation with the shining light my only theory I guess is the pretty obvious one that there's someone that was left behind that Camiko didn't come back and save

[00:24:21] and they've been left behind within the shining light and blame Camiko potentially of what's happened to them so I guess that's something that will play out for her story for the rest of the season as well yeah and it's not her sister so we miss no loss yeah

[00:24:35] that would be even worse if it's suddenly like oh and that's my cousin and that's my uncle twice removed or just suddenly it's her entire family that were taken from the home village or something well and also as well with this we have Frenchies

[00:24:48] sort of you know hallucinogenic flashbacks as well and I'm earlier on you know he's there in a sense trying to I guess tell Colin they killed his family but it doesn't really work out what it's because Colin has seen him disarm someone

[00:25:06] and that pulls a gun at the charity exactly that's charity yeah but you see him hallucinating with Colin and his dead family and then all the other kills that are there from his days as a surge yeah just really good developments for these two characters

[00:25:24] again get their own storylines for the season so my favourite protagonist moment for the episode let's get on to our antagonist moment for this episode or seven moments dear not the real heroes I'm the real hero and with that Homelander introduces Sister Sage and Firecracker

[00:25:47] as new members of the seven this is your big moment from your big antagonist moment yeah it is because you know I like the fact here that Mother's Milk doesn't really get these new appointments of Sage and Firecracker to the seven certainly I don't think Ashley does

[00:26:08] but Ashley soon realises that she's getting demoted to Mass Scott I need to go ball crushing like Ronald McDonald yeah, like Ronald McDonald I need to vent this demotion with ball crushing accuracy on Cameron the Vought News news reader Lacky I guess yeah subversive submissive I should say

[00:26:36] absolutely the took of Carlson of the Vought Network I guess so yeah exactly and I like here then I mean even Sister Sage is like I'm not really happy that I've been exposed here how am I expected to do a coup

[00:26:53] with a million eyes on me so she you know she's a little concerned that her cover will have been blown here and that it's punishment for her standing up to Homelander as well and you know I suspect she's 100% right she is the smartest person on the planet so

[00:27:08] she is 100% right that this is punishment from Homelander you know so but again we have just this whole shake up here we also do have the Deep who has been previously he's been taken away as chief data analyst as well and she is very much on the hump

[00:27:30] they know that the footage has been copied from Vought all to do with the killing of the Homelander's fans and Todd so you know she's on the hunt for whoever did that aka A train yeah I'd say that news is going to start tightening

[00:27:56] pretty soon well that's it definitely you know I just like how the introduction of these two at primarily sister sage though at least for this episode the disruption and the chaos that has I love the fact that Ashley is like well I'm gonna resign Disney has wanted me

[00:28:17] that's hilarious for the last three years I'm a girl boss but in the end she does shred her resignation letter and doesn't resign but this is after one of Starlight's friends from Vought has her head lasered right in front of her killed by Homelander after sister sage

[00:28:44] has brought her in for questioning just to get intel I love the fact that the woman in Ashley's office who's just said yes I do know and Starlight she was trying to even just hide that connection then Homelander lazes her through the centre of the head

[00:29:05] but she goes yeah Starlight called me a few days ago a bait and then gets the latest in there sister sage is do you not think the next word would have been useful no she's already admitted she was against me against me I kill her there we go

[00:29:23] it's so good I love all this and again Homelander is just a fantastic character and I think you've always said it from season one Anthony star just brings great stuff here to this character whether it's menace threats or just like going off the rails quite frankly as he

[00:29:47] is doing in this episode his paranoia and his lack of confidence despite who he is all of that so layered and nuanced it's really good but I do like the chaos and disruption that's brought about with these two new members of the seven and again Ashley

[00:30:11] fantastic here you know I love the continuation of the ongoing joke here's the two new members of the seven that brings us to six who's going to be in over seven I don't know maybe I'm holding it open for my 12 year old son

[00:30:26] it's like you're still not the seven call yourself the six really good I also want to talk about Homelander in my antagonist moment because we get the fracturing of Homelander once again we've had this before we've had this last season where he's seen himself

[00:30:41] in a structured mirror but this time it seems again even more aggressive as things start to you know get out from underneath Homelander where after Ryan returns from meeting over Billy Homelander is trying to work out what he's done wrong almost or why is it that

[00:30:59] Ryan's going to be lying to him and again there's a really creepy thing that Homelander does where he goes I know you were there I can smell Billy Butcher on you you know there's a really creepy thing about that

[00:31:11] he throws a glass across the room sending Ryan out of the room and then there's a fracture of all the different versions of Homelander all the different personalities of Homelander talking to him none of them very nice none of them trying to calm down

[00:31:26] all of them trying to get at the keys what will accomplish Homelander's real goal right and get to the core of what Homelander's problem is as they see it and the core of that is he seems to have a tendency to need love

[00:31:41] and that needs to be crushed before he can transcend his human nature and become the greater being that he's supposed to be like wow that's someone that will never be aligned with the opposite side right just remove the love from who you are and you will

[00:31:59] become the greatest being on the planet where? and I mean even just to that point and like you said you know the proceeding that it's that absolute anger at his own son Ryan because he can smell Butcher on you know it's the disgust of that and almost just

[00:32:22] you know the lack of love towards his son yeah you know absolutely and even down to the taking his milkshake away from him on the earlier episode absolutely but it's only going to get worse right if he removes the love

[00:32:37] and they say to him that the way to do that is to go back to the start so I guess we're going to be revisiting the lab where he was yes yeah must be that they've showed or anti-star has been great in showing the fracturing

[00:32:51] and of Homelander just throughout the three episodes when something is happening he can see this almost like twitch and it's been growing the twitch is growing each episode what I found spectacular and again it's space cgi but it looked fantastic was anti-star kind of had these

[00:33:17] very distinct four different homelanders in that mirror like there was the smarmy there was the scared there was the angry like there was very distinct look and feel to each of them the emotion I'm like interesting how they'll play this further like whether maybe it's a one-off

[00:33:39] maybe it is it just to can you imagine if they go like Joker level crazy yeah in terms of with the homelander character and be that I'm things are go go crazy well yeah piece amazing to see absolutely right now it's real golem versus smeagol it's

[00:33:57] that Lord of the Rings moment right it's that breaking of the more evil parts of the evil guy or telling him how to be even more evil you know and he just did a great job on it definitely yeah really good as always for man through star 100%

[00:34:13] Chris have yourself yeah I'll jump in with very very quick one for me it's sent the deep and his romantic connection I found this phone because again this is the deep taking something that he sees work once to the stream so he has pushed back on Ashley and

[00:34:37] basically was like no I'm in charge and he wants to use that new new found backbone it's gonna go use it on sage yeah and yet we find her in this weird man state where she's eating a blooming onion no offense blooming onions are blooming

[00:34:59] delicious they're great they are great amazing I like it but similar to similar to the McDonald's placement of the Loki I did feel you know from the epic steakhouse what available in your local area called the number now that was a little bit

[00:35:13] real world promotion in there when they slag off real world promotion so fake world promotion in the show I just thought it was interesting that it sounded like get down to your local epic steakhouse right if I was in the states it would have worked on me because

[00:35:25] maybe they're already yet me I mean I would have eaten it but they do linger as they they start a trist that his his love is octopi love will probably have a problem with they linger on a bloody yeah yeah yeah it was weird

[00:35:49] so I'm gonna I'm very interested to see yeah what's about because again this is another side to say sage has been standoffish annoying annoyed with everything that is the deep to be fair he is the deep yeah but it's going to be fun to see what how this

[00:36:09] trist moves forward and does destroy that because she is the smartest person in the world but you then are showing that the smartest person in the world still has sexual needs yeah and probably use her intellect knowing how easy it is to get what she wants

[00:36:29] she did that to get the deep in there but I did wonder about that that bloody serene at the end that's just like frame it perfectly that was just like here's something you're gonna find out about in the next two episodes five or six exactly exactly

[00:36:45] so that's it my food that's very much my antagonism a fantastic fantastic we'll go on to our last outstanding moments from the episode thank you you have five minutes to make your openings as regularly listens and we'll know when we haven't talked about

[00:37:02] one of the massive moments of the episode it's gonna appear in our outstanding moments actually in our other right standing moments because the big one is the ice dance nightmare for me from the episode wow what a scene you know I just

[00:37:16] simply again thought this is the parody bit we've seen clips of the sound that they're singing put the Christ back into Christmas which is just the worst tendency of people when they hear the words happy holidays in to turn on them and go but it's always been Christmas

[00:37:34] I don't care what religion you are you should believe in my gods you should believe in what we believe at Christmas and I don't care about your religion and turned into a musical by Vaught it's just it's hilarious in its parody way and again

[00:37:48] so much like what we see in the real world as well but that's it at the start and you know Victoria Newman comes down for her photo op when just with with the cast of the of the the ice dance

[00:38:00] and I was kind of going well that's probably it right they're having a meeting here we see MMS there and and Huey comes to be back up for them while they're surveying this meeting between Newman and Homelander we learned some really interesting things about the plan

[00:38:14] in here can I talk about those in this section as well yeah couple of a couple of things this is precipitated on the fact that Bob Singer now most likely to become the next president had brought forward a effectively a superhero management act similar to the MCU superhero

[00:38:34] registration act but but what he wants to do is bust all superheroes back to entertainment they can no longer be involved in the armed forces they can no longer be involved anywhere else they have to go on the mask singer in the future a really good joke

[00:38:48] and but Newman of course being a soup and wants to take this to Homelander and wants to kind of make sure that they're that they're aligned he brings along his lead strategist now sister sage to blow wide open the plan the plan here is now

[00:39:06] they're going to get themselves to the highest position and they're gonna kill Bob Singer Newman's gonna take over and out herself as a soup and a soup president and now they run the world basically so Newman not very much on side

[00:39:20] with this she's been very happy about hiding about hiding her identity as a soup in the past and then a drop of sweat mission impossible like drops onto the shoulder of Homelander turning into this just absolute nightmare which must have been so much fun to come up

[00:39:40] with in the writers room as you know again it's the creepy thing of Homelander we mentioned him saying I can smell Billy Butcher on you to his son and here he's going and now here you free five oh my smell the blood of of you

[00:39:56] I know I would I would smell his scent anywhere kind of thing and then just lasers everywhere in all directions cutting the actresses playing Maeve in half during their final number and then people's you know ice skates going through next chopping off at hands and flint

[00:40:14] yeah it's just brutal but again so much fun so it was slurs around the ice rink it was such a good rather than murder on the dance floor murder on the dance floor is that gonna be the other song that Sophie Ellis Buckster will release 40 years later

[00:40:30] the follow-up please don't yeah I know I love this it was just so good because it was just this whole thing a world domination killing the president's plans and then it just goes absolutely to pass in terms of all these bystanders who are practicing for us on ice

[00:40:56] getting killed, slaughtered so good but Huey managing to sort of keep out of range of the lasers whilst he was in the ducting and then he does get a helping hand as well from a very unexpected quarter yes he gets saved by a train another push towards him

[00:41:20] actually helping them out but he runs away very quickly explaining himself or anything like that so yeah it looks like a train is even closer to moving over to their side right I think so it's partly my point that it's just the confirmation that a train really is

[00:41:40] kind of recruited now as an informer we do hear mother's milk saying that he wants to flip a train see that that's the case and they have that meeting where he says again a train doing the bravado I could sort of just drag your face across

[00:42:08] this astroturf in like under three seconds and it's like mother's milk is but the dark bags on your eyes suggest something that's keeping you up at night and he's still concerned because sister sage is on the hunt for the person that's got that footage but yeah here

[00:42:30] with him helping here escape is probably confirmation I don't think he's double crossing here I think there's too much happened in the other episodes where he's not used the baseball bats he's kind of annoyed at his autobiography he's feeling the loss of his nephews and probably his brother

[00:42:54] so it's built up exactly they've been growing that story for the last this wife it does this whole season and it makes sense why they're ending the next season as well everything is building on everything they are introducing some new characters they're staying around they're building on each

[00:43:20] of every time of their story the joke of basically butchering using mother's milk divorce and the fact that his ex-wife was shacking up with a homelander who was probably better in bed they used that and that was all the way

[00:43:38] back when we were first introduced to mother milk and his ex-wife making a joke but you made a joke about their basically his OCD not being able to kind of hold together the marriage you build all these stories amazingly and A train is one of those

[00:43:56] A train started as the A hole and you built him into a character where he has remorse and can be flipped exactly very good Chris what was your outstanding moment I just want to go back to Huey in this moment so again we have Huey trying to get

[00:44:16] the power of attorney flipped off his mom that's not going to happen because it was done in faith so he has to learn to live with it and this is going again kind of in similar to what I talked about Huey's mom being the antagonist

[00:44:32] for Huey this season I think to a degree that is starting to become a bit more solidified in my head I don't have any greatness to it still like in that she seems like that vaut travelling salesman who sells rose, hips water

[00:44:54] and beauty products and things like that because she has that case maybe she showed up in the second episode with I'm so interested to see very much where they go with this right I don't know if they're just going to have this beautiful magical moment and everything

[00:45:12] hunky dory I don't think that will happen I must admit when I saw the scene between Huey and his mother I felt that kind of diffused my idea that are the idea that we had last time about her being an antagonist

[00:45:26] for the season because I thought it was an incredibly moving idea an incredibly difficult thing to talk about it's not talked about very often how many women go through postpartum after having a child and what's talked about even less is what's happened here with his mother

[00:45:42] six years after Huey's born that she tries to take her own life doesn't succeed thankfully and then says it's life or death for me I have to make my choice for myself now I've given him six years and the choices to walk away like what a

[00:45:58] difficult decision for any woman to have made and I was going like wow that's a great story arc and a great thing to talk about great again another boys feature where they bring surface things that nobody wants to talk about in this show

[00:46:14] that's supposed to be about people punching each other in the face and I thought it was handled really well and I could see Huey kind of melting Huey a bit kind of going oh I've been holding this against you now for 30 odd years

[00:46:26] that you walked out on me and left me behind with my dad but he was in a safe place he was being taken care of by his dad and she knew if she stayed she'd be dead so I really liked it I thought it was

[00:46:40] a really good moment between the two of them but you know no look again I don't I completely agree with that it was touching as hell that's the problem they I think they melted your walls to that character much as the walls have been melted for for Huey

[00:47:04] so when that inevitable double cross or stab comes it's that much more impactful you know what I mean it's basically because he had that wall of Pete like if you had of if you hadn't of ingratiated this character towards the audience and towards Huey

[00:47:24] we already didn't like her because she ran away from her kid yeah absolutely and you've kind of given her very much a very true human side yeah the fall is that much more greater and more painful for Huey and that's the only reason I'm like

[00:47:42] ooh because the story makes it makes such more sensationist and kind of interesting story and just that's it we understand now why she did it and it's good and I guess I'm just such a light touch because I was going okay I can kind of see

[00:47:56] Simon Pegg back very often he's in a coma here so he's likely not going to come out of that coma that's what he's been told almost that you know it's maybe not possible so here's a great way to write Simon Pegg out resolve

[00:48:08] the issue with Huey and his mom and now Huey has got a support system back in his life and they don't have to bring back in Simon Pegg every time they need him but that's okay we'll see we'll see how that develops through it but I thought

[00:48:24] the acting in this moment and that justification is probably the wrong word but her telling her story to her son who's been anger his anger has been rising in him for so many years about what he thought was a slight on him

[00:48:40] and he thought he was to blame I thought it was just a really well written scene and a really well done scene and again a topic that's not talked about enough at all no I agree let's wait and see absolutely anything else

[00:48:52] any other points or notes about the episode that we haven't talked about I think the only one I've got kind of relates to the deep and his romantic connection but it's the flip side of that were poor Ambrosius is left in an algal filled tank

[00:49:08] which hasn't been cleaned for a while and you just see I guess him moving or at least this triangle this love triangle that is developing unbeknownst to Sister Sage and Ambrosius but which may involve all three of them meeting up unless that bloody skewer was somehow Ambrosius's blood

[00:49:36] I don't know but I don't think so because I'm just thinking isn't it no that's the ink of an octopus it is so maybe not but just the fact that she's lamenting in her green fish tank that we haven't made love in two weeks

[00:49:58] and you seem to be distant can you not bring me out of this closet can we go on holiday to the car where my family and cousins lives so good overall what do we think of the three episode arc here

[00:50:14] what do you think of this as the third episode in the three episode arc I'm gonna jump in I absolutely loved it so well put together they could have released this in a single episode it's enough driving you to go into each episode more

[00:50:30] but the way that they have framed the first three very much setting up the remaining season going and I'm like I still we joke about sometimes we can see where storylines are going how they're gonna play out to a degree this is a bit of a mystery like

[00:50:50] they're really going to places where we don't usually see a lot of these shows so for me it's just I'm strapped in and ready to go and I'm just like no all my flags are down no red flags just all green flags go go go

[00:51:06] excellent yeah really looking forward to next week's episode really looking forward to the rest of this season it's set up really well throughout these three episodes there's something going on for every single character here and it's a big cast of characters absolutely all interesting yeah yeah none of

[00:51:22] its filler it's all amazing yeah it's really good I mean this episode I'd give it four Ice Christ out of five and I just really enjoyed it and I think overall and the these first three have been really really again solid and strong and great form

[00:51:42] action packed tender you name it loads of different things it's such thought out written directed acted show it's so good yeah yeah excellent stuff right time for a pint let's get out of the local pub definitely maybe get some pig snacks this time then oh yeah pig snacks

[00:52:02] or maybe some calamari rings who knows yes fellow quizzes fellow boys and girls it is question three for this season season four of the boys pub quiz so question three what name was firecracker previously known as very good very good that was on the pageant circuit with starlight

[00:52:30] John John John I get the question one more time what name was firecracker previously known as brilliant that's question three collect all the answers together and email them to us at the end of the season two feedback at tvpodcastindustries.com

[00:52:44] to be able to chance of getting your hands on some season four of the boys goodies and that is the same email address for any feedback that you have on the show we'd love to hear your thoughts after this epic first couple of episodes

[00:52:56] I do want to give a quick shout out to one of our followers over on Instagram and then I want to be named but I want to say a huge thank you to them for the last year or so of all of the theories and

[00:53:08] thoughts that they've had on the boys and Jen V as they've been going along sending in some really interesting theories on the show keeping me entertained in between each of the seasons so thank you so much you know who you are and I know you're listening so

[00:53:20] thanks so much for that over the last couple of months and we're really looking forward to hearing your thoughts about the episodes as well fellow boys and girls speaking of which I have some feedback from our wonderful binging boys and girls the ones who've watched the episodes

[00:53:34] while I was doing the editing this has all come in so thank you very much to those of you who have sent in some of your thoughts on the first three episodes first up we got an email in from Koffee and Vodkan episode one he says

[00:53:44] Greetings fellow acquitted defenders only the first episode of season 4 with five yet to be made and I'm already missing this show still glad it's ending on the producers terms with a complete and proper run but with mine to the present this episode was a great stage setter

[00:53:58] with the standout scene being Todd getting his whilst furthering the dirty trick plot with his demise sister sage as the Adrian vice stand in fits fantastically adding tactical stakes in an already political and super powered powder keg had to check IMDB to make sure they hadn't

[00:54:14] recast mother's milk it looked like he lost height as well as weight though the voice is still the same speaking of looked where I could couldn't find two voices Ambrosius though I know that voice any ideas so nice to see the boys back in 10

[00:54:26] however f'd up they may be 4.5 black bile brains sage bookbends sanctuaries and recalcitrant Ryan's age with five peace and take care coffee and vodka excellent coffee vodka we did mention on the first podcast yeah bro she is played by the wonderful Tilda Swinton what a

[00:54:42] shocker there that they got her on board but I'm sure she had lots and lots of fun great call out there as well on sister sage being the Adrian vice stand in that's the super brain of the Watchmen universe so also had some pretty crazy plans

[00:54:56] in there in the Watchmen so really cool yet save as ourselves on mother's milk yeah just you just look so different and even from the clip that they showed on the previously on at the start of the first episode but it is just the beard

[00:55:08] it seems like and a little bit of weight loss or change as Chris called out brilliant stuff thanks coffee vodka I know you've sent on some thoughts on the other two episodes as well so we'll get to those in a minute

[00:55:18] but next up over in our Facebook group Jamie Lawton said on the first episode I love the Tilda Swinton was the voice of Ambrosius yeah great great stuff in there Dr Bob Phillips says I wonder if the working title for episode one was for the love

[00:55:32] of tentacles rapid reintroduction to every flaw and sparkle of the main cast loving evil Sherlock guess that sister sage and keeping deep octopus in the closet as Frenchie Frenchies Colin on the street and we get the ultimate deep loving repair as woman versus

[00:55:48] tarmac settles with a one-on-one draw I guess that's Kamiko landing face first our planting face first in the in the concrete as well great stuff thanks Dr Bob hope you enjoyed the episodes as well on episode 2 Jamie Lawton says yet more fun surprise guest star casting

[00:56:06] with Will Ferrell yeah that was a real shocker will Ferrell's doing a great job over the last couple years of appearing where you just least expect him isn't he coffee vodka emailed in on episode 2 and said greetings fellow ad lib to splattered defenders

[00:56:20] there's an undercurrent to the season of innocent assumed lost from the word go with Ryan fighting back as well as he's able a fight that even Kamiko and Annie lost let's see just how deep a crypties cynicism goes with Ryan's head now on the chopping block

[00:56:34] this is fun in a quite a dark way homelander's massive ego and insecurity issues is a possible to have both are the clear inroads to much of the shitstormer no doubt to see arriving soon oh and belated sweet to Jeffrey Dean Morgan's appearance

[00:56:50] here's how here's to hoping we'll see more of him Ned Butcher has to find new allies although that's what he gets for telling M.M. that he has to be more ruthless to be a leader a train continues to be the series yo-yo and we'll

[00:57:02] see what comes of Annie stepping up to lead the forces of her social army this and so much more loving the show as ever five menorah man slaughtered multiple men milk manhandle butchers and missing mothers out of five peace and take care coffee and vodka great points there

[00:57:19] coffee vodka really like your email there yeah great to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan as we see he's featured in episode three with a kind of a big cliffhanger as to what they will do if they do get Ryan back on the side of Billy Butcher

[00:57:34] since like they want to turn him into a new soldier boy for their side which would be a really interesting idea and would be fought by I'd say tooth and nail by Billy Butcher on to episode three Jamie Lawton says

[00:57:46] I feel it's a just playing her cards close to her chest setting her chess pieces up to take down Homelander the deep being her first prawn pardon the pun I'd like that Jamie very good and that's a really interesting suggestion that actually behind it all Sage isn't

[00:58:00] setting up for Homelander to take over the world she's kind of setting up herself to take over the world and would make a lot of sense of that out of nowhere sex scene between herself and the deep as we said we just speculated that everybody has needs

[00:58:14] deep is pretty easily manipulated so why not but it could easily be that she's manipulating to her side of the plan and knowing that he's seems to be the one that you can get to do anything and everything that you want to do great stuff thanks Jamie

[00:58:30] finally coffee and vodka on episode three says greetings fellow holiday greetings defenders nothing from months then a threesome good things come to those who wait speaking of sage words what was that on the table next to the blooming onion where to start is it

[00:58:44] parody when it's basically cut and paste like in put Christ back in Christmas not complaining just curious this is the second time but she's taken the high road suppose if my better angel was back I would too but a strange look for Billy Homelander going back

[00:58:58] to where it all began wonder if there's a few former good Elkin students in residence any creator own arch enemy and the more French he changes the more he stays toned so much packed in this episode I think I'll leave it at that

[00:59:10] other than say once again wow five Christ's on ice obnoxious noir and fentanyl free football matches out of five peace and take care coffee and vodka I love your ratings as always coffee but I thank you for that and you know there's one

[00:59:24] thing that you just called it there that we completely forgot to mention even after noting it on the first episode that now we have a new person behind the mask of black noir we mentioned it in the first episode that suddenly he's talking and we thought

[00:59:38] we'd get back to it and then completely forgot to mention it after that but I love the comedy of this guy who has no idea the role he's playing and but is going to play under the instructions that all he has to do is stand in the

[00:59:50] suit not talk at all but is taking every opportunity to talk as a great moment where he's confronting Ashley asking you know for some motivation here why does he not talk what's the question but how is he able to follow people's guidance if they don't

[01:00:04] give many guidance you know that was really interesting so I feel that by the end of the season and this black noir will go the same way as the previous black noir he will probably annoy someone enough to take his head

[01:00:16] off by the end of the season and as for Billy taking the high road you know again he feels that Ryan is the last of the Azabekka in the world so why wouldn't he go with the boy he's not as ruthless as

[01:00:28] he is in some scenes in the show there's someone very closely connected to him and of course the connection with Becca as well so I can see why he would take the high road there and not feed his son the fentanyl laced cookies as well. Excellent
