[00:02:50] yeah
[00:02:51] loving everyone's comments and thoughts on this show so far
[00:02:55] but shall we get into our spoiler field discussion
[00:02:59] Derek who gave us what were when and how for
[00:03:04] chapter 6 ladies of the willow world
[00:03:07] well as always to mention this show is based on the James
[00:03:09] level 1975 novel of the same name
[00:03:12] this episode was written by Megan Huang
[00:03:14] Megan is a writer director based in Los Angeles
[00:03:16] and Michigan and she's a story editor on shogun
[00:03:18] currently she's writing a movie for a 24
[00:03:20] called Necrocosm
[00:03:22] it's a next big project
[00:03:23] interesting
[00:03:24] yeah that's a 24
[00:03:26] I was going to say yeah that production studio has hatched to any project
[00:03:28] makes me interested
[00:03:30] if you don't know who they are
[00:03:32] the probably the biggest success is everything everywhere
[00:03:34] all at once which is Oscar winning
[00:03:36] and fantastic movie
[00:03:38] if you haven't seen it go check it out of course
[00:03:40] yeah absolutely
[00:03:41] but yeah interesting to see what Necrocosm is
[00:03:43] yeah definitely
[00:03:44] like I mean as you say
[00:03:46] it's just a 24
[00:03:47] they just bring out some really good
[00:03:50] independent you know just
[00:03:52] tales different stories
[00:03:54] and with really good people involved
[00:03:57] you know so
[00:03:58] it's almost like this outlet for
[00:04:00] the big studio system to do something a bit different
[00:04:05] exactly so interested to see what Megan does over there
[00:04:07] this episode was directed by Horomi Kamata
[00:04:09] Horomi is a Japanese Mexican director
[00:04:11] who also directed two episodes of Monarch
[00:04:13] Legacy of Montsnakes
[00:04:14] yeah we started on a sy
[00:04:16] who plays Muriko in Shogun of course
[00:04:19] so they've worked together quite a bit before
[00:04:21] yeah that's great
[00:04:23] really enjoyed watching Monarch as well
[00:04:26] yeah good show
[00:04:27] yeah good show
[00:04:28] bit of Godzilla in your weekly
[00:04:29] yeah we are at least a threat of Godzilla for most of the season
[00:04:33] good stuff to jump
[00:04:34] do you want to tell us what they gave us with your
[00:04:36] snops as four
[00:04:37] Shogun chapter six
[00:04:39] ladies of the willow world
[00:04:41] sure
[00:04:42] lady Achiba returns to Osaka
[00:04:44] in order to accelerate
[00:04:46] the regents campaign against
[00:04:48] Toranaga
[00:04:49] meanwhile in a Giro
[00:04:51] Toranaga test Mariko's loyalty to his cause
[00:04:55] interesting stuff
[00:04:58] well I mean we do start with a flashback
[00:05:00] we do
[00:05:01] yeah to get a little bit of insight into both
[00:05:04] Mariko but also lady Achiba as well
[00:05:08] absolutely
[00:05:09] well let's go straight into there with our top
[00:05:11] Bushido points
[00:05:12] Bushido number one
[00:05:13] Mariko and Lady Achiba
[00:05:15] and they're first meeting I guess
[00:05:17] we see in this flashback at the beginning
[00:05:19] so we get
[00:05:21] 22 years ago
[00:05:23] and interesting kind of contrast here
[00:05:27] in that you get the sense of Mariko and Lady Achiba
[00:05:32] who's known as Ruri
[00:05:34] at this stage of her life
[00:05:36] being actually really good friends
[00:05:39] you know within the course of Ruri's father
[00:05:43] yet you see
[00:05:45] you know in contrast
[00:05:47] there's a tension
[00:05:49] between Mariko's father
[00:05:51] and Achiba's father
[00:05:53] or Ruri's father
[00:05:55] yeah absolutely
[00:05:57] you know Mariko's father being Lord
[00:05:59] Keshi Jinsai
[00:06:01] and is a new vessel
[00:06:03] of Achiba's father here
[00:06:07] but yet seemingly a fairly
[00:06:09] tense relationship
[00:06:11] and sometimes odds
[00:06:13] with one another
[00:06:15] because we know
[00:06:17] now the story of Mariko and what her father did
[00:06:19] he's the one that killed Karota
[00:06:21] he's the one that killed Lady Achiba's father
[00:06:23] so yeah so it's interesting seeing
[00:06:25] it through the eyes of these two kids
[00:06:27] being put together, being pushed together
[00:06:29] at the beginning I like that you actually see Mariko being forced to bow
[00:06:31] almost like
[00:06:33] this is how you welcome in you guest
[00:06:35] bow in front of her
[00:06:37] and now the two of your friends
[00:06:39] you must welcome her into the our society
[00:06:41] you must take care of her
[00:06:43] you see it going through their lives together
[00:06:45] had close they were
[00:06:47] and you also see the you know the innocence of youth
[00:06:49] in that they spot
[00:06:51] and you know both fathers arguing
[00:06:55] and you know they wonder why
[00:06:57] you know it's all
[00:06:59] slightly lost on them really
[00:07:01] yeah exactly
[00:07:03] but ultimately we see Karota
[00:07:05] Lady Achiba's father
[00:07:07] you know beheading
[00:07:09] a group of people
[00:07:11] Jin Sai and
[00:07:13] really brutal to watch and you can see
[00:07:15] Jin Sai being held back by Toranaga
[00:07:17] as he's about to challenge
[00:07:19] effectively the leader of their country
[00:07:21] and what he's doing
[00:07:23] Karota is taking so much pleasure almost in this massacre
[00:07:25] of
[00:07:27] with his own sword
[00:07:29] it's not like he's sending it
[00:07:31] to destroy them he's bringing one up at a time
[00:07:33] and beheading them
[00:07:35] but the reaction from
[00:07:37] Jin Sai is that he wants to stop this immediately
[00:07:39] and then he realize his daughter is right there
[00:07:41] watching on
[00:07:43] and tells her it's just a dream go back to bed
[00:07:45] basically you're having a bad dream
[00:07:47] and of course after that
[00:07:49] we see
[00:07:51] Mariko sort of later on
[00:07:53] being married into
[00:07:55] the Toda clan
[00:07:57] to Buntauro
[00:07:59] and it's really
[00:08:01] again she doesn't know why her father
[00:08:03] is doing this as far as she can see
[00:08:05] it's a worthless plan
[00:08:07] it's a worthless alliance
[00:08:09] and has no real sense as to why
[00:08:11] he would do this
[00:08:13] there's a real great moment
[00:08:15] as she's putting on sort of her
[00:08:17] wedding hood almost
[00:08:19] and she's looking at her father
[00:08:21] Akashi
[00:08:23] and
[00:08:25] just the eye
[00:08:27] contact between them
[00:08:29] almost what are you doing to me
[00:08:31] exactly
[00:08:33] Jin this there is
[00:08:35] an element being described about a duty
[00:08:37] that lasts and a duty to serve a greater purpose
[00:08:41] so you know
[00:08:43] whilst this seems like a worthless alliance
[00:08:45] I'm sure there are
[00:08:47] motivations around
[00:08:49] her father doing this
[00:08:51] yeah really good flashback here
[00:08:53] to see
[00:08:55] I guess some start of
[00:08:59] the issues that are in the present
[00:09:01] also to see the
[00:09:03] Mariko and Lady Ashiba
[00:09:05] you know were friends
[00:09:07] I mean it's just something that
[00:09:09] lasts we do hear later
[00:09:11] that she hasn't seen Lady Ashiba
[00:09:13] since so
[00:09:15] is it something that
[00:09:17] Lady Ashiba
[00:09:19] will be thinking of fun
[00:09:21] if they meet again when they meet again
[00:09:23] well yeah
[00:09:25] you know as far as the big story
[00:09:27] here as as you say is these two were friends
[00:09:29] she was
[00:09:31] pushing her on this path
[00:09:33] we see more about Lady Ashiba
[00:09:35] how she became Lady Ashiba
[00:09:37] Nottada
[00:09:39] we see that this path leads her to become the
[00:09:41] consort of the Tyco
[00:09:43] giving him an heir to take over the country
[00:09:45] and that's the whole path that's born out of
[00:09:47] her father being killed by
[00:09:49] Mariko's father
[00:09:51] so that's really important
[00:09:53] that yes they may have been friends
[00:09:55] when they were young
[00:09:57] and their father and all of
[00:09:59] her family were killed
[00:10:01] Mariko has been forced to stay alive
[00:10:03] by Bontaro for this whole time
[00:10:05] so I don't think it's going to be a friendly meeting
[00:10:07] between Lady Ashiba and Mariko
[00:10:09] absolutely but also
[00:10:11] survived
[00:10:13] the executions of
[00:10:15] her whole family by her father
[00:10:17] survived that because of the marriage
[00:10:19] protected almost taken
[00:10:21] off the chest spot
[00:10:23] to speak with this marriage
[00:10:25] it's a really interesting bit that was in there
[00:10:27] from the flashbacks
[00:10:29] where we see Mariko training
[00:10:31] it seems like the entire chorus
[00:10:33] are watching on as she's training
[00:10:35] and they're all commenting
[00:10:37] that you hear whispers of how good she is
[00:10:39] she's a great warrior
[00:10:41] but in the corner you see her future
[00:10:43] husband Bontaro watching on
[00:10:45] with just a dead blank stare
[00:10:47] so again
[00:10:49] when she has that moment
[00:10:51] where their father where she's looking at him
[00:10:53] and seems to have absolutely no interest in her
[00:10:55] so why would she be married
[00:10:57] into this
[00:10:59] loveless relationship
[00:11:01] with a clan that isn't strategically worthwhile
[00:11:03] but it's equally loveless from her
[00:11:05] because she just doesn't see
[00:11:07] it as being right for
[00:11:09] in a sense her station
[00:11:11] and the court
[00:11:13] it's worthless to her
[00:11:15] so it's almost sort of
[00:11:17] the
[00:11:19] toadoklan is beneath her
[00:11:21] and again
[00:11:23] we'll talk about it in another point
[00:11:25] but I like that this has stayed
[00:11:27] with her for entire life
[00:11:29] she never knew what the reason that her father
[00:11:31] had sent her off was
[00:11:33] we learned that from Turalaga later on
[00:11:35] which we will talk about
[00:11:37] but I like that it goes through her entire life
[00:11:39] she has this
[00:11:41] in the back of her mind the whole time
[00:11:43] my father had to slaughter
[00:11:45] everybody else in my
[00:11:47] family and the last remaining member
[00:11:49] so that's what we leave
[00:11:51] I guess are a flashback of
[00:11:53] it's just to say you know
[00:11:55] that kind of marrying for power and alliances
[00:11:57] and yet here
[00:11:59] this marriage seems to be
[00:12:01] of a different nature
[00:12:03] it's taking her away from the power
[00:12:05] center of power around Turalaga
[00:12:07] at the court
[00:12:09] and so on by marrying her
[00:12:11] into a clan
[00:12:13] there is deemed to be
[00:12:15] small relatively
[00:12:17] important by comparison to
[00:12:19] a number of other families
[00:12:21] so yeah it's an
[00:12:23] interesting move you know
[00:12:25] on the chessboard
[00:12:27] absolutely I suppose you know
[00:12:29] it's one of those
[00:12:31] tales that comes from history of course
[00:12:33] but have been taken into lots
[00:12:35] and lots of popular stories about these types of
[00:12:37] unions between different clans
[00:12:39] you know again
[00:12:41] we always mention Game of Thrones
[00:12:43] I've not even got to apologize for it anymore
[00:12:45] just that reference of you know
[00:12:47] picking a member of your family to
[00:12:49] unite two houses even if there's no
[00:12:51] connection between the two of them
[00:12:53] for a future purpose that really
[00:12:55] matters to the empire effectively so
[00:12:57] so while Marie Coat
[00:12:59] may not know the reason for this marriage
[00:13:01] it's a fundamentally really important thing
[00:13:03] and it's what kept her alive
[00:13:05] which is actually really interesting
[00:13:07] so let's go on to our Bushido
[00:13:09] number two Chief Admiral John Blackthorn
[00:13:11] another step on the latter
[00:13:13] in Japan even though he may not want it
[00:13:15] I mean he's been
[00:13:17] showered with gifts I mean
[00:13:19] you know um
[00:13:21] he saved her anager from
[00:13:23] a soyly death basically in the last
[00:13:27] episodes and we see here
[00:13:29] in front of all his surviving
[00:13:31] captains
[00:13:33] allies
[00:13:35] generals
[00:13:37] that you know he's lost many men
[00:13:39] from the the after effects of the
[00:13:41] earthquake but he uh you know
[00:13:43] he calls out uh
[00:13:47] John Blackthorn as having saved his life
[00:13:49] again but I mean he's been showered
[00:13:51] with gifts I mean what did they do in ancient
[00:13:53] Egypt they would cover them with gold
[00:13:55] and then that was their kind of
[00:13:57] payment if they'd done something really
[00:13:59] well um but here he gets a
[00:14:01] a a a a a a a a a which will give him
[00:14:03] an income of
[00:14:05] uh
[00:14:07] hundred kukus um
[00:14:09] what is the name
[00:14:11] the chief admiral of canto um
[00:14:15] tarnagas chief admiral
[00:14:17] and becomes a general of the canon
[00:14:19] regiments I mean immediately
[00:14:21] no sooner has iapore amie
[00:14:23] uh gotten the
[00:14:25] the regiments of canons
[00:14:27] it is taken away from him
[00:14:29] or at least it is the barbarian
[00:14:31] who is um
[00:14:33] over him and in charge of it
[00:14:35] so extra and you know all of
[00:14:37] this is being noted by uh
[00:14:39] amie and i do like the way that
[00:14:41] you know he's absolutely
[00:14:43] vexed concerned with all
[00:14:45] um
[00:14:47] all these gifts being showered on the barbarian
[00:14:51] and I love the conversation
[00:14:53] with yabashigi um
[00:14:55] because he's actually in the end has
[00:14:57] become less concerned about the barbarian
[00:14:59] and more concerned with the oncoming
[00:15:01] fruitless war that's about zapping
[00:15:03] so you know he's like
[00:15:05] i think he's he jokingly
[00:15:07] ses to his uh
[00:15:09] his aides i think it's time for another will
[00:15:11] so it's just i love that
[00:15:13] you know
[00:15:15] this is kind of consuming
[00:15:17] umie here that
[00:15:19] the barbarian the one that he effectively
[00:15:21] urinated over in episode one
[00:15:23] is now suddenly
[00:15:25] a chief admiral
[00:15:27] a general of
[00:15:29] sort of a very important regiment
[00:15:31] and has now also been given a thief
[00:15:35] yeah so yeah being showered with gifts here
[00:15:39] well it almost feels personal for omie
[00:15:41] it's like as if you know he gets given
[00:15:43] something and then it's taken away from him
[00:15:45] at the last moment and handed over to the barbarian
[00:15:47] yeah but you know he's
[00:15:49] got that quest for power that
[00:15:51] absolutely lust for power and as you say
[00:15:53] in that conversation with yabashigi
[00:15:55] he's looking at him going i just had this kind of regiment
[00:15:57] and yabashigi first he reminding him
[00:15:59] it's not yours it was always mine and now
[00:16:01] turanagas taking it back so it's always been
[00:16:03] tyranagas you know
[00:16:05] then the breaks kids basically is kind of
[00:16:07] the way he's he's saying it because
[00:16:09] yeah why are you worried about one man
[00:16:11] when we've got an onslaught
[00:16:13] coming effectively which we will also
[00:16:15] have to navigate and survive
[00:16:17] but on john himself
[00:16:19] um he doesn't understand why he's getting these honors
[00:16:21] he's standing in front of this entire crowd
[00:16:23] of uh turanagas plan
[00:16:25] effectively everything being translated
[00:16:27] of course by mariko and he's
[00:16:29] just incredulous at this idea that
[00:16:31] you know all he wants is a ship and his men back
[00:16:33] yeah he wants to leave
[00:16:35] japan yeah ultimately
[00:16:37] yeah he wants to leave
[00:16:39] japan in order to fight
[00:16:41] against the and disrupt the portuguese
[00:16:43] operations in this area
[00:16:45] and she feels is aligned with turanagas
[00:16:47] except he doesn't know about the deal
[00:16:49] that turanagas made
[00:16:51] with the priests and the captain
[00:16:53] of the black ship as he was leaving
[00:16:55] a cycle so actually
[00:16:57] you know as and as um
[00:16:59] mariko says you know it is not in the
[00:17:01] interests of turanagas what you are
[00:17:03] asking uh what you want me to
[00:17:05] translate and turanagas is quite clear you know that the
[00:17:09] engine will not be granted his request
[00:17:11] yes he will be guessing these gifts
[00:17:13] whether he likes them or
[00:17:15] or not yeah ultimately
[00:17:17] he doesn't understand them because
[00:17:19] he's said to turanagas in the past
[00:17:21] you know i cannot do what you are asking
[00:17:23] i do love the conversation
[00:17:25] though when uh when uh
[00:17:27] john is going effectively to uh
[00:17:29] where turanagas holding course
[00:17:31] and gets time with them to ask this question
[00:17:33] why do you want me to do this?
[00:17:35] i told you i can provide the service
[00:17:37] that you want me to provide and turanagas
[00:17:39] responses what kind of services
[00:17:41] that you will provide for me
[00:17:43] so again even though all john wants
[00:17:45] is to get his men back in a ship
[00:17:47] back at turanagas going you will
[00:17:49] serve me no matter what way you
[00:17:51] will be of service to me
[00:17:53] which is really good um as part of that
[00:17:55] uh as opposed to him sitting in court
[00:17:57] he also has bontaro come to him to plead
[00:17:59] forgiveness um for
[00:18:01] the slikes that he made last week
[00:18:03] the tacky maiden as wife i suppose
[00:18:05] which um as we said in the last
[00:18:07] episode uh bros dishonor to his household
[00:18:11] and he's being told by turanagas
[00:18:13] he now has to keep his distance from
[00:18:15] mariko for the next seven days but
[00:18:17] bontaro even though he's asking
[00:18:19] for forgiveness here he's effectively
[00:18:21] telling turanagas that there's something
[00:18:23] going on between john and his wife
[00:18:25] mariko he's seen something in her eyes
[00:18:27] he's spent however many years now
[00:18:29] fifteen years probably uh married to her
[00:18:31] maybe ten years married to her
[00:18:33] and during that time all she's been
[00:18:35] as cold as ice to him
[00:18:37] yes when she speaks to john
[00:18:39] he can see a complete difference in how
[00:18:41] she talks to him and how they react
[00:18:43] around each other
[00:18:45] something that he has her husband has never
[00:18:47] that's quite interesting that he's having a conversation and that
[00:18:51] um reminds turanagas to
[00:18:53] effectively challenge
[00:18:55] mariko uh telling her
[00:18:57] she can't see that within his
[00:18:59] clan their clan need to be tight
[00:19:01] their clan need to be together he can't see a
[00:19:03] division being called by john and mariko
[00:19:05] and they need to work
[00:19:07] absolutely absolutely
[00:19:09] and i mean you know he's playing
[00:19:11] it off on both sides in that
[00:19:13] as you say he has that
[00:19:15] frank conversation with mariko
[00:19:17] but he also then says with bon tire
[00:19:19] you know why don't you just divorce him
[00:19:21] you know what are you wanting
[00:19:23] here you know and also
[00:19:25] she's doing what i'm asking
[00:19:27] so this might look strange
[00:19:29] but ultimately i'm asking her to do a juicy
[00:19:31] here which involves the barbarian
[00:19:35] and that's what you need to trust in
[00:19:39] it's for juicy and nothing else
[00:19:41] exactly but it is really interesting
[00:19:43] of course you know as his trans
[00:19:45] leader as john's trans leader
[00:19:47] what bon tire was also probably
[00:19:49] experiencing is there's a certain intimacy
[00:19:51] between the two of them because
[00:19:53] they're both speaking a completely different language
[00:19:55] to each other that nobody else can penetrate
[00:19:57] to nobody else can hear what they're talking about
[00:19:59] they can of course guess
[00:20:01] the information if he's angry or if he's
[00:20:03] saying something that's a joke
[00:20:05] or something like that they can guess part of that
[00:20:07] but between the two of them they have their own
[00:20:09] little bubble between them where they can talk about anything
[00:20:11] and you know you feel from that
[00:20:13] conversation at the end of the dinner table
[00:20:15] in last week's episode
[00:20:17] you feel that bon tire was noticing
[00:20:19] the way that she was talking to john
[00:20:21] and telling him you know
[00:20:23] secrets of their family almost
[00:20:25] telling him how
[00:20:27] not to make bon tire angry
[00:20:29] that kind of thing in the same room as him
[00:20:31] that intimacy will have been seen
[00:20:33] by her husband you know
[00:20:35] which was really interesting
[00:20:37] and i guess then the final movement of
[00:20:39] discussion between the tornaga and moriko
[00:20:41] is that he tells her there's one more gift
[00:20:43] that john needs he needs to be pillaged
[00:20:45] he needs to be taken to
[00:20:47] the tea rooms and that is going
[00:20:49] to be the next reward that he has for
[00:20:51] which is pretty big
[00:20:53] uh... moriko
[00:20:55] and then moriko has to be with him
[00:20:57] has to accompany him in case
[00:20:59] he talks in his sleep
[00:21:01] or talks when he's pillows
[00:21:03] you know
[00:21:05] in order that any kind of
[00:21:07] information or advantage
[00:21:09] is extracted from this pillowing
[00:21:11] yes that's a pretty difficult task
[00:21:13] if you're moriko and again
[00:21:15] we know that she did sleep with john
[00:21:17] already thinking her husband was dead
[00:21:19] she has slept with john before
[00:21:21] and now she's being asked to bring him to a brothel
[00:21:23] and be in the same room as him while he's being
[00:21:25] pillaged
[00:21:27] but i think we should get on to
[00:21:29] bushy day number three the tea rooms
[00:21:31] because yes there is this pillowing
[00:21:33] of
[00:21:35] john blackthorn
[00:21:37] again another interesting thing
[00:21:39] it is with lady kikus
[00:21:41] and her services
[00:21:43] and lady kikus is the quarters
[00:21:45] and for ommy
[00:21:47] so again ommy is kind of like
[00:21:49] you know i think he has a conversation
[00:21:53] with um...
[00:21:55] tornagas son actually
[00:21:57] as they see him returning
[00:21:59] from the night in the tea rooms
[00:22:01] just to jump heads lightly where he says
[00:22:03] he seems very fortunate
[00:22:05] man
[00:22:07] he gets a lot of lucky breaks
[00:22:09] but equally
[00:22:11] again it's almost another slide to ommy
[00:22:15] which i find kind of interesting
[00:22:17] absolutely
[00:22:19] again it's like as if something that he had
[00:22:21] has been taken away from him
[00:22:23] kikus speaks to him beforehand
[00:22:25] she goes to him beforehand and tells him
[00:22:27] about what's happening
[00:22:29] but then they have no contact afterwards
[00:22:31] so she's there but
[00:22:33] let's talk about the other great scene
[00:22:35] in the episode
[00:22:37] the negotiation with jinn
[00:22:39] the leader of the tea room
[00:22:41] where mary co and fougie sit down
[00:22:43] to talk to jinn
[00:22:45] and negotiate the price
[00:22:47] for effectively taking over the tea room
[00:22:49] for the night
[00:22:51] yeah it's just i found this
[00:22:53] and i had three scenes
[00:22:55] this was one of them
[00:22:57] the other one was in the tea house as well
[00:22:59] just so really well observed
[00:23:01] i loved just so that it was
[00:23:03] it was all really done in
[00:23:05] kind of close up
[00:23:07] this negotiation
[00:23:09] from the faces of jinn, fougie
[00:23:11] and mary co
[00:23:13] to the lack of work of cups
[00:23:15] that you know fougie is kind of
[00:23:17] saying oh i'm really sorry we're giving you
[00:23:19] it's almost like the worst
[00:23:21] lack of work cups that we have
[00:23:23] for this tea as they're trying to
[00:23:25] negotiate a price
[00:23:27] for the tea house
[00:23:29] and it's all kind of
[00:23:31] the negotiation is kicking off
[00:23:33] but it's all on a misunderstanding
[00:23:35] in that jinn believes this is for
[00:23:37] tiger and aga
[00:23:39] when in fact it is for the engine
[00:23:41] and
[00:23:43] you know i just kind of love
[00:23:45] how
[00:23:47] once this is revealed
[00:23:49] that it's for the engine
[00:23:51] lady jinn
[00:23:53] asks well would you be joining him
[00:23:55] as you're never seen
[00:23:57] apart and there's just a lovely
[00:23:59] close up of fougie
[00:24:01] taking a sip from the
[00:24:03] cup with this kind of knowing
[00:24:05] look on her face
[00:24:07] almost trying to
[00:24:09] actually suppress a little bit of a green
[00:24:11] and that's what it's like
[00:24:13] oh the tea has been spilled
[00:24:15] yeah it's all kind of
[00:24:17] fairly awkward but it's so
[00:24:19] lovely
[00:24:21] this negotiation between
[00:24:23] with these three women
[00:24:25] oh absolutely but
[00:24:27] suppose this is what's you know
[00:24:29] what's so good in the writing
[00:24:31] here and what's so good in the
[00:24:33] performances here at a surface level
[00:24:35] the conversation that they're having
[00:24:37] is so polite, so lovely
[00:24:39] you know effectively jinn's saying
[00:24:41] to them oh i love the beautiful
[00:24:43] cups that you have here
[00:24:45] but she's looking down on them
[00:24:47] she's saying you know this new house
[00:24:49] with jam black or black
[00:24:51] whatever is like
[00:24:53] it looks a bit shabby
[00:24:55] exactly but of course you know
[00:24:57] to the point fougie's going but actually
[00:24:59] there was just a mod side on the earth
[00:25:01] great so like everybody in the
[00:25:03] ten we're still recovering this is the best we possibly have
[00:25:05] available but you can tell
[00:25:07] underneath the surface of this politeness from jinn
[00:25:09] there is that's like she's trying to
[00:25:11] trying to undermine
[00:25:13] you're not the rich person
[00:25:15] exactly and she introduces the notion
[00:25:17] almost hides things from
[00:25:21] the outside world you know
[00:25:23] it's a safe space
[00:25:25] to keep prying eyes away
[00:25:27] and this is part of news
[00:25:29] why she's asking whether
[00:25:31] mariko is also going to come and having
[00:25:33] that little bar about
[00:25:35] well you never seem
[00:25:37] separated from the engine
[00:25:39] but it's ultimately
[00:25:41] she has been requested
[00:25:43] by a tarnaga
[00:25:45] yeah but
[00:25:47] there is also
[00:25:49] that want of her that you see
[00:25:51] come out here and I think it leads
[00:25:53] to another really
[00:25:57] great moment here once
[00:25:59] black thorn with mariko
[00:26:01] and lady kiko are at
[00:26:03] the tea house
[00:26:05] as kiko explains this willow world
[00:26:09] you know this safe space
[00:26:11] from your present situation
[00:26:13] and to provide a perfect moment
[00:26:15] but it's also subtly
[00:26:17] done because
[00:26:19] she actually
[00:26:21] stands behind
[00:26:23] mariko as she says it so it's almost
[00:26:25] like she's being the voice of mariko
[00:26:27] to john black thorn for her
[00:26:29] like she is interpreting
[00:26:31] their feelings for her
[00:26:33] in a way that mariko said
[00:26:35] she will not do again
[00:26:37] you know
[00:26:39] to you through the words of others
[00:26:41] as i am the interpreter
[00:26:43] and it's all kind of flipped in this scene
[00:26:45] and it is just so
[00:26:47] so
[00:26:49] fantastic and I really like that
[00:26:51] yeah and as she invites
[00:26:53] john black thorn
[00:26:55] through you know she asks
[00:26:57] mariko
[00:26:59] will you also be joining us
[00:27:01] and she
[00:27:03] doesn't but she is
[00:27:05] touched softly by john as he makes his way
[00:27:07] through yes and there's this kind of
[00:27:09] like you know the eyes
[00:27:11] clothes it's like
[00:27:13] breathing out
[00:27:15] of mariko like
[00:27:17] because she's had to be
[00:27:19] so self-discipline she
[00:27:21] knows those rules of the eightfold
[00:27:23] fence are being employed
[00:27:25] massive absolutely yeah
[00:27:27] they're being tested as well because
[00:27:29] again as i mentioned the intimacy
[00:27:31] of being the translator for john
[00:27:33] she's here she's telling him he must
[00:27:35] compliment kiko and her beautiful she looks so she's giving him
[00:27:37] the words to to speak to kiko before
[00:27:41] they go off and pill it together and then as you say
[00:27:43] kiko speaking through her telling john
[00:27:45] to picture the one that he loves
[00:27:47] and then picture her on
[00:27:49] unclothed as well
[00:27:51] as mariko's translating that back to him
[00:27:53] so definitely a hot and bother does she
[00:27:55] say as she's saying that but
[00:27:57] it's also interesting in the back of the conversation
[00:27:59] that they had with tornagga
[00:28:01] this is of course or the discussion that they had
[00:28:03] where she was pushing back against
[00:28:05] translating directly what john was saying
[00:28:07] and then said
[00:28:09] i'm reminded that a translator is here to
[00:28:11] translate and nothing more
[00:28:13] and here she is in court with kiko
[00:28:15] and the tea rooms having to say exactly
[00:28:17] the words the kiko is saying
[00:28:19] but you're right she has asked
[00:28:21] whether she'll join in up but she
[00:28:23] mis-translates that and says to john
[00:28:25] this is
[00:28:27] space for you and you alone
[00:28:29] to him even though tornagga
[00:28:31] effectively said to her you must be in the room in case he talks
[00:28:33] during pillowing right so she made that choice
[00:28:35] herself not to go into the room absolutely
[00:28:37] and kiko was saying to where she can
[00:28:39] yeah exactly so that's interesting
[00:28:41] so i presume she'll tell tornagga that she did
[00:28:43] yeah if and i assume that it's not exactly
[00:28:45] that john so yeah what an interesting scene
[00:28:47] and what a great use again of translation
[00:28:51] we've seen some great examples of this
[00:28:53] throughout the season the first or second
[00:28:55] episode where where john and
[00:28:57] tornagga are first having their discussion
[00:28:59] and we were talking about
[00:29:01] the camera just focusing on john
[00:29:03] and taking the translator out of it so it looked
[00:29:05] like the two of them were talking directly to each other
[00:29:07] and this time taking kiko
[00:29:09] out of it so it looks like mariko
[00:29:11] is talking directly to john saying the real words
[00:29:13] that she wants to say to him but can't
[00:29:15] yeah it's so good it's so
[00:29:17] beautifully observed at this intimacy
[00:29:19] that's kind of can't be said
[00:29:21] and you see the toughness of it for mariko
[00:29:25] and for john say he you know
[00:29:27] he touches her hand you know
[00:29:29] very inappropriate in this moment
[00:29:31] absolutely and you know
[00:29:33] that's his suggestion back to her
[00:29:35] yeah and i just sort of really
[00:29:37] really really good and i think
[00:29:39] yeah i just thought it was fantastic
[00:29:43] TV absolutely
[00:29:45] and you know again the
[00:29:47] the great observation that was made from mariko
[00:29:49] and when she talked about the eightfold fence
[00:29:51] to john where she was saying you know
[00:29:53] you may see all of our rituals
[00:29:55] you may see all of the things that we do
[00:29:57] but realize behind all of that
[00:29:59] there's a lot more to interpret
[00:30:01] so we see that multiple times in this episode
[00:30:03] i think there's a great moment with kiko
[00:30:05] where she's pouring the saki
[00:30:07] and john drinks it you know
[00:30:09] we hear that there's a whole training
[00:30:11] process that goes through how to pour the saki
[00:30:13] she gets another jugger
[00:30:14] of saki brought in by one of the younger girls within the
[00:30:17] the two rooms
[00:30:19] and then there's a discussion between the two and the empty spaces
[00:30:21] you know she points to where the jug used to be
[00:30:23] effectively indicating to the younger
[00:30:25] the younger member of the girls in the two room
[00:30:27] and it will be great if you wear tier
[00:30:29] it'll be great if you were part of that empty space
[00:30:31] get actually
[00:30:33] this is supposed to be an intimate moment between the
[00:30:35] and our clients get out now
[00:30:37] basically and she's thank you very much
[00:30:39] elder so again i love
[00:30:41] the interpretation between the two of them
[00:30:43] you see the subtitles on screen
[00:30:45] and if you were just to read the subtitles
[00:30:47] without the intent behind them
[00:30:49] you wouldn't get them
[00:30:51] this is a really polite dismissal
[00:30:53] get out of here stop listening in
[00:30:55] because you know this is
[00:30:57] the other side of it
[00:30:59] yes they're not getting Lord Taranaga down here
[00:31:01] which would have been a big coup almost for Jin
[00:31:03] she's saying you know
[00:31:05] this isn't like an average tearoum across the country
[00:31:07] when she's in the negotiation she's saying
[00:31:09] this is a very special place
[00:31:11] so she was very open to having Lord Taranaga
[00:31:13] they're not getting him but they are getting the engine
[00:31:15] so everybody in there is really interested
[00:31:17] to know what's going on behind those
[00:31:19] those doors
[00:31:21] so really like that
[00:31:23] these are just such good moments in the tearoum
[00:31:25] we've complemented many departments on the show
[00:31:27] things like you know the filming and the direction
[00:31:29] and the background actors and the cast
[00:31:31] and the writing all that kind of stuff
[00:31:33] but i have one more department to complement here
[00:31:35] i would guess it was the makeup team
[00:31:37] because when we see John return from the tearoum
[00:31:39] the following morning
[00:31:41] he looks red
[00:31:43] he looks like he's had a very long night
[00:31:45] maybe the actor went out and had a few drinks
[00:31:47] before to prepare his face
[00:31:49] to look like he has been awake all night
[00:31:51] but he looks like he's had a very good night with kiku
[00:31:53] and looks very disorientated when he comes out the following morning
[00:31:57] so well done makeup crew
[00:31:59] absolutely absolutely
[00:32:01] let's go on to basheeda number four
[00:32:03] let's return to Asaka
[00:32:05] even though all of these
[00:32:07] more personal moments are happening
[00:32:09] in the fishing village
[00:32:11] with Taranaga
[00:32:13] in Asaka there's quite big movements going on
[00:32:15] represented here
[00:32:17] with the play that's being put on
[00:32:19] and it seems like it's being put on for lady as she
[00:32:21] but and it's weird
[00:32:23] i probably never thought about this before
[00:32:25] but in earlier times of kings and queens
[00:32:27] you absolutely would have plays being written
[00:32:29] about their lives
[00:32:31] and performed directly in front of them
[00:32:33] yeah exactly
[00:32:35] but here it's just the uncomfortableness of what's actually happening
[00:32:37] on stage in front of Ashib
[00:32:39] it's talking about the fact that she is
[00:32:41] the mother of the future air of Japan
[00:32:43] and how she got into that position
[00:32:45] and how she became the consort of the taiko
[00:32:49] but it feels really awkward to watch her watch to play
[00:32:53] yeah absolutely
[00:32:55] i loved all this
[00:32:57] kind of the machinations of court
[00:32:59] and it's kind of playing out with
[00:33:01] i think it's kabuki
[00:33:03] the the the the performances
[00:33:05] with i think the no performances
[00:33:07] and you have
[00:33:09] you know on a number of different levels here
[00:33:11] it's telling
[00:33:13] the court of lady ashib
[00:33:15] is success here really for providing
[00:33:19] the taiko and air
[00:33:21] it's also the ashib
[00:33:22] and lady ashib
[00:33:23] are trying to
[00:33:25] and
[00:33:26] woo lord
[00:33:27] ito and so you have that fantastic thing after the play
[00:33:31] where they effectively
[00:33:33] are recruiting as a nomination for the council of regents
[00:33:37] and
[00:33:39] also within the play
[00:33:41] from the audience perspective
[00:33:43] you have you know everyone is yes
[00:33:45] juicifully looking on
[00:33:47] at this fantastic performance by lord
[00:33:49] iso and
[00:33:51] the story of how the taiko got an air
[00:33:55] but you
[00:33:57] have
[00:33:59] the two Christian regents
[00:34:01] in Sugiyama
[00:34:03] and Kiyama
[00:34:05] talking about how
[00:34:07] they'll always be hostages now
[00:34:09] because what's happened
[00:34:11] is they're holding all the
[00:34:13] regents hostage in a saga
[00:34:15] because of potential threat
[00:34:17] to the air
[00:34:19] and also
[00:34:21] last week that was the lady as she
[00:34:23] set up effective
[00:34:25] and also to force a vote against
[00:34:27] turanaga
[00:34:29] we see actually
[00:34:31] slightly earlier here are matsu
[00:34:33] escaping to war and turanaga
[00:34:35] from
[00:34:37] from a saga
[00:34:39] but you know within the play as
[00:34:41] eight these two
[00:34:43] the two Christian regents
[00:34:45] but also you have the
[00:34:47] dion lady io
[00:34:49] the
[00:34:51] then talking with lady as she
[00:34:53] about
[00:34:55] you know as she do is good
[00:34:57] but he's not great
[00:34:59] you know is this the alliance that you really want to
[00:35:01] sort of see in your hopes too
[00:35:03] and you have these flashbacks
[00:35:05] then through
[00:35:07] throughout the kabuki play
[00:35:09] seeing ashibe effectively
[00:35:11] the story playing out
[00:35:13] as it is being depicted
[00:35:15] by the actors
[00:35:17] and it's just really
[00:35:19] really good you know
[00:35:21] but i think that's what makes
[00:35:23] it so difficult to watch as well
[00:35:25] because seeing the real story
[00:35:27] exactly what must be going on as she
[00:35:29] has heard you know
[00:35:31] the who's interpreting it
[00:35:33] as this great moment in the history of
[00:35:35] Japan where the air was conceived
[00:35:37] and where i became the only person
[00:35:39] who could give a given you air
[00:35:41] and she's flashing back to how
[00:35:43] awful it was for her.
[00:35:45] She was effectively
[00:35:47] the daughter of the previous leader
[00:35:49] of Japan who has been
[00:35:51] now co-opted by the new tyco
[00:35:53] and being told
[00:35:55] you effectively have to bet him
[00:35:57] and i'm not 100% sure in the translation
[00:35:59] it's a bit better for me
[00:36:01] but she gets the title of
[00:36:03] ashibe no tada
[00:36:05] which i think means no title
[00:36:07] i'm not 100% sure
[00:36:09] it's almost like she's being told
[00:36:11] everything you have in the past
[00:36:13] as ruri is being removed away from you
[00:36:15] you now have a new title
[00:36:17] you're not the queen
[00:36:19] you're not the new leader's wife
[00:36:21] you are just the person who's there
[00:36:23] to give him an air and if you do
[00:36:25] then you will have a place in court
[00:36:27] the new leader of the country is
[00:36:29] betting her to
[00:36:31] deliver a new air and
[00:36:33] you even see the awful
[00:36:35] sex scene between her
[00:36:37] and the tyco
[00:36:39] and you hear later about how
[00:36:41] she was fed different herbs
[00:36:43] and concoctions in order
[00:36:45] to effectively
[00:36:47] numb her in a sense
[00:36:49] to sort of
[00:36:51] in order for this to happen
[00:36:53] i think again
[00:36:55] this happens and we have
[00:36:57] lordeito being nominated
[00:36:59] and brought forward for the council
[00:37:01] you have these
[00:37:03] kind of
[00:37:05] mechanisms and playing out
[00:37:07] but the other
[00:37:09] lovely thing
[00:37:11] about the whole
[00:37:13] range of scenes in a sacca
[00:37:15] and again i think it's
[00:37:17] just really wonderfully observed
[00:37:19] is this
[00:37:21] alliance or relationship
[00:37:23] with the
[00:37:25] relationship
[00:37:27] and lady
[00:37:29] achiever
[00:37:31] because you know
[00:37:33] she is almost kind of like an amit
[00:37:35] with her to some extent
[00:37:37] he's kind of really intrigued
[00:37:39] you know
[00:37:41] why she has such a hatred
[00:37:43] of tyrannaga and she's not
[00:37:45] you know earlier on in the episode
[00:37:47] she doesn't tell him but she says
[00:37:49] if you eliminate him
[00:37:51] if you are able to eliminate him
[00:37:53] and you know
[00:37:55] but also kind of saying
[00:37:57] you don't know what europe
[00:37:59] against even this
[00:38:01] you know
[00:38:03] it's lady eos sort of
[00:38:05] concerns about who she is
[00:38:07] allying with
[00:38:09] is almost like she actually says that
[00:38:11] that you know
[00:38:13] you don't know what europe
[00:38:15] against
[00:38:17] and you need me
[00:38:19] exactly who tyrannaga is
[00:38:21] and like as this goes through
[00:38:23] the episode she does tell
[00:38:25] a she do she says
[00:38:27] i saw him plotting
[00:38:29] and talking whispering
[00:38:31] and yes
[00:38:33] it was jinsai who killed my father
[00:38:35] yes but i blame tyrannaga
[00:38:37] and or jinsai is already gone
[00:38:41] he still has to answer for the death of my father
[00:38:43] this is revenge here
[00:38:45] and this is so fiery revenge
[00:38:47] it really is
[00:38:49] just underneath the surface
[00:38:51] and again cutting it back to the play
[00:38:53] the players putting this all on stage
[00:38:55] if it's this beautiful moment
[00:38:57] that led to the future of japan
[00:38:59] and on juneith you can see it burning in it
[00:39:01] because she has these memories of what actually happens
[00:39:03] she wants revenge on a person
[00:39:05] who led to the death of her family
[00:39:07] she goes it's torn an aggo
[00:39:09] who planned my father's death
[00:39:11] and it banked it
[00:39:13] episode one
[00:39:15] it's so successful in a place like this
[00:39:17] that you have a druga saying
[00:39:19] to john blackthorn
[00:39:21] she says his secret heart
[00:39:23] is not a secret to me
[00:39:25] she understands torn aggo
[00:39:27] perfectly
[00:39:29] at least she thinks she does
[00:39:31] from her perspective
[00:39:33] so this is really interesting
[00:39:35] it's like
[00:39:37] this is the true match up
[00:39:39] in a sense that's happening here
[00:39:41] and it's so well done
[00:39:43] her face
[00:39:45] it's almost passive
[00:39:47] aggressiveness that she has this veil
[00:39:49] of
[00:39:51] serenity
[00:39:53] she talks about revenge
[00:39:55] in the most sort of
[00:39:57] neutral of way
[00:39:59] but I'm bound by the customs
[00:40:01] and rules
[00:40:03] I need to just so again
[00:40:05] well observe
[00:40:07] all of this
[00:40:09] is played
[00:40:11] the camera is used
[00:40:13] the rising
[00:40:15] the performances
[00:40:17] it's so so good
[00:40:19] I absolutely loved this
[00:40:21] yeah really good
[00:40:23] but it doesn't all go to plan
[00:40:25] they've now brought in lordito
[00:40:27] to be the fifth member of the cancel
[00:40:29] which allows them to
[00:40:31] hopefully
[00:40:33] now all be allied
[00:40:35] and take out torn aggo to
[00:40:37] impeach him effectively
[00:40:39] he's going to effectively be a
[00:40:41] puppet of
[00:40:43] Ashido and is not willing to accept that
[00:40:45] so he's the one that blocks it
[00:40:47] they've pushed
[00:40:49] the new puppet in place lordito
[00:40:51] instantly says yes absolutely
[00:40:53] impeach
[00:40:55] to her aggo effectively he knows that's why he's there
[00:40:57] but it goes around the room and gets to sugarma
[00:40:59] we saw the breakdown of this
[00:41:01] group
[00:41:03] in last week's episode where they were no longer able to agree on things
[00:41:05] and sometimes no longer sitting in the same room
[00:41:07] they're realizing
[00:41:09] if he does this vote
[00:41:11] that they've all talked about many many times
[00:41:13] to impeach
[00:41:15] to him to impeach to her aggo
[00:41:17] if he does this vote then
[00:41:19] he will forever be a slave to
[00:41:21] to that's it and yet you have
[00:41:23] Kiyama and Ono
[00:41:25] towing the line here
[00:41:27] and ultimately
[00:41:29] it means that
[00:41:31] Ashiba is growing impatient
[00:41:33] and so we have
[00:41:35] lordito on to the council
[00:41:37] effectively gets
[00:41:39] sugarma
[00:41:41] slaying along with his family
[00:41:43] who knows how the rest of his clan
[00:41:45] and his clan alliances go
[00:41:47] but this is
[00:41:49] in effect
[00:41:51] you know a coup of the council
[00:41:53] and the harmony
[00:41:55] that was supposed to be there
[00:41:57] and how the council was supposed
[00:41:59] to operate yes
[00:42:01] but they've done it again they've removed another member
[00:42:03] of the council of five that must vote
[00:42:05] there must to be a vote of five people
[00:42:07] on this council to impeach
[00:42:09] uh the torenaga and they've killed
[00:42:11] sugiyama so now they have to find another replacement for sugiyama on this council
[00:42:15] so that they can impeach uh torenaga
[00:42:17] so that's quite interesting i like that twist again you know
[00:42:20] it kind of feels like the taiko had all of this in his head
[00:42:23] when he made the council of regions
[00:42:25] if they can't work together
[00:42:27] and are unable to all five of them come to decisions
[00:42:29] then everything will still
[00:42:31] and that's part of the plan that he had in place
[00:42:33] if torenaga wasn't going to accept
[00:42:35] to be so lived of a japan when he made that offer to him
[00:42:37] which we saw back in chapter two
[00:42:39] um
[00:42:41] then i'll make this stalemate
[00:42:43] between the five leaders who must work together
[00:42:45] or else
[00:42:47] there will be consequences
[00:42:49] they must have five of them at all times working together
[00:42:51] absolutely it's all buying torenaga
[00:42:53] time more and more
[00:42:55] and more and more time
[00:42:57] exactly
[00:42:59] really really interesting
[00:43:01] let's talk about torenaga in our final baschido
[00:43:03] baschido five
[00:43:05] um because we hear a lot of talk about crimson sky
[00:43:07] so i guess it's to crimson sky
[00:43:09] or not to crimson sky
[00:43:11] that is the question
[00:43:13] well that's it i mean like earlier on
[00:43:15] so we have here a matzu
[00:43:17] returning from
[00:43:19] a sakya and sort of falling off the horse
[00:43:21] in the village of viziro
[00:43:23] and then being you know
[00:43:25] immediately there's a council that goes on
[00:43:27] and he talks about it is time to invoke a long
[00:43:31] you know plotted plan of crimson sky
[00:43:35] which is effectively to eliminate
[00:43:37] the regents and install a new government
[00:43:39] and you have
[00:43:41] torenaga's sun being up for this
[00:43:43] you know
[00:43:45] to um be the sole
[00:43:47] region the shogun
[00:43:49] the reclaiming of the
[00:43:51] family birthright
[00:43:53] of shogun and
[00:43:55] the torenaga sun would just do a heartbeat anyway
[00:43:57] it wouldn't do it that way
[00:43:59] planning keep you running into a sakya you know claiming
[00:44:01] i am the shogun give me my parar
[00:44:03] it is the umpulsiveness of it
[00:44:05] and torenaga is not convinced
[00:44:07] i do really like here that he
[00:44:09] just
[00:44:11] asks omie here
[00:44:13] about
[00:44:15] this and who effectively cautions against it
[00:44:17] is why risk
[00:44:19] open warfare when we still have time
[00:44:21] again making the point about
[00:44:23] we have time on our side at the moment
[00:44:25] no one has come from a sakya
[00:44:27] to meet them in the battlefield
[00:44:29] yes they've
[00:44:31] lost many soldiers from the mod slides
[00:44:33] but they're still not
[00:44:35] in open warfare
[00:44:37] why attack this huge sittered out
[00:44:39] of a sakya fortress which is
[00:44:41] you know
[00:44:43] going to cost more lives
[00:44:45] and
[00:44:47] when we have the time
[00:44:49] so you know it's too risky
[00:44:51] to try to do crimson sky and it
[00:44:53] torenaga seemingly takes that
[00:44:55] on board and says
[00:44:57] it's not time for crimson sky
[00:44:59] at this moment
[00:45:01] this is also omie's
[00:45:03] misalignment i guess with torenaga
[00:45:05] i think this is why omie is
[00:45:07] cautioning against it because
[00:45:09] if they go to war
[00:45:11] he has to take that side
[00:45:13] torenaga side and he has to fight
[00:45:15] with an like a banner man
[00:45:17] exactly wood but
[00:45:19] the gifts that have been bestowed upon him
[00:45:21] by torenaga are taken away
[00:45:23] and the position that he has in his own village
[00:45:25] as the partner of kiku
[00:45:27] is also been stripped from because that's been given to john
[00:45:29] so i think
[00:45:31] parts of omie's opinion is coming from him being
[00:45:33] not as aligned with it
[00:45:35] it's too fold
[00:45:37] his motivation is from a different place
[00:45:39] but the outcome of it
[00:45:41] aligns with torenaga's
[00:45:43] which is more time
[00:45:45] because ultimately when
[00:45:47] crimson sky is in
[00:45:49] vote it is coming after
[00:45:51] sugianna's death
[00:45:53] because
[00:45:55] there is a motion that
[00:45:57] then it will accelerate to get
[00:45:59] a fifth member on the council
[00:46:01] and then there is a delay here
[00:46:03] from that because
[00:46:05] the other regents will be
[00:46:07] absolutely petrified
[00:46:09] they are currently hostages
[00:46:11] in the socket
[00:46:13] so the pressure
[00:46:15] is being
[00:46:17] put to bear on the remaining regents
[00:46:19] you know
[00:46:21] lady ishiibe's impatience
[00:46:23] is adding this pressure
[00:46:25] squeezing
[00:46:27] forcing the issue
[00:46:29] and so for torenaga
[00:46:31] it's
[00:46:33] if i'm going to be falsely impeached
[00:46:35] i'm looking for no honors he says
[00:46:37] i'm looking for no titles
[00:46:39] or wealth
[00:46:41] but if the traitor threatens the air
[00:46:43] especially as sugianna has just been killed
[00:46:45] so it will be
[00:46:47] crimson sky here
[00:46:49] and interestingly
[00:46:51] then we also hear
[00:46:53] that he will ask
[00:46:55] his half brother for support
[00:46:57] to provide
[00:46:59] his army to his cause
[00:47:01] yeah which is
[00:47:03] yes an option here you know
[00:47:05] after the earthquake and looks like
[00:47:07] some of his army so he does have some allies
[00:47:09] that he needs to get in contact with
[00:47:11] which i guess is
[00:47:13] interesting you know
[00:47:15] given that we had the five leaders
[00:47:17] of the plans members of the regent
[00:47:19] of the cancel of regents
[00:47:21] and torenaga splitting off from that
[00:47:23] and you felt he's pretty isolated
[00:47:25] he's on his own they at least have those four armies
[00:47:27] that could go up together against torenaga
[00:47:29] at least he had possibly
[00:47:31] has an ally that he can reach out to
[00:47:33] swell it's supposed
[00:47:35] the army that he has
[00:47:37] because it would feel quite small going up against the saca
[00:47:39] armies absolutely and
[00:47:41] interestingly you know
[00:47:43] in terms of this decision to invoke crimson sky
[00:47:45] he uses sugiama as a pre
[00:47:47] pretext for it
[00:47:49] but what we see earlier is
[00:47:51] tarenaga talking
[00:47:53] to uh
[00:47:55] mirico about
[00:47:57] lady ishibe he knows that they used to be friends
[00:47:59] you know why is she turned against us
[00:48:03] and believes
[00:48:05] that she wars
[00:48:07] without honor
[00:48:09] you know well you are all men
[00:48:11] you go to war for conquest
[00:48:13] power
[00:48:15] pride
[00:48:17] women
[00:48:19] at this time
[00:48:21] we are simply at war
[00:48:23] she is how to use the tools that she can
[00:48:25] and only she can
[00:48:27] for her war
[00:48:29] he sees her being dishonorable
[00:48:31] she is how to use men
[00:48:33] for herself
[00:48:35] without seemingly using men
[00:48:37] because she is a woman
[00:48:39] so there's this
[00:48:41] notion of this conflict
[00:48:43] this battle that women are constantly in
[00:48:45] so that is why she operates
[00:48:47] in these ways
[00:48:49] but we have also that
[00:48:51] tarenaga saying that
[00:48:53] you know
[00:48:55] we get this
[00:48:57] reveal of
[00:48:59] mirico's father's plan was always to keep her
[00:49:01] separate from the fight
[00:49:03] putting her off the chess board
[00:49:05] until she's not
[00:49:07] which is really important
[00:49:09] and so that she may finish it
[00:49:11] no he's here
[00:49:13] he says to it
[00:49:15] your war is not over
[00:49:17] you have not failed him
[00:49:19] she feels she's failed him
[00:49:21] she's still asking
[00:49:23] all these conversations around taking her own life
[00:49:25] the point are
[00:49:27] won't allow it
[00:49:29] you
[00:49:31] you know
[00:49:33] and we'll be take up
[00:49:35] the honor and juicy
[00:49:37] that her father
[00:49:39] subtly
[00:49:41] bestowed upon her by marrying her to
[00:49:43] a worthless plan
[00:49:45] and alliance
[00:49:47] just to keep her
[00:49:49] out of the way until her
[00:49:51] purse comes around
[00:49:53] yeah i really like this
[00:49:55] and as i said earlier on
[00:49:57] as we discussed
[00:49:59] the fact that
[00:50:01] marico has gone through her entire life
[00:50:03] and this awful marriage
[00:50:05] to puntairo thinking
[00:50:07] her father was just getting rid of her from the court
[00:50:09] when actually he was protecting her
[00:50:11] for a future purpose
[00:50:13] not just protecting her to keep her alive
[00:50:15] and putting the little woman behind a man
[00:50:17] to keep her safe
[00:50:19] not just that
[00:50:21] he was putting this warrior
[00:50:23] we saw her training with the naganata
[00:50:25] earlier on
[00:50:27] putting her behind a man
[00:50:29] which may have been what she thought was happening
[00:50:31] he was putting her there to keep her safe
[00:50:33] so that when in the future
[00:50:35] it was required to take
[00:50:37] then the new leader of Japan
[00:50:39] as she though in this case
[00:50:41] she would be there ready to go and be on the side of
[00:50:43] the naganata so yeah
[00:50:45] really love that little recognition
[00:50:47] and seeing the reaction on marico's face
[00:50:49] when she has the plot revealed to her
[00:50:51] I thought was just really well
[00:50:53] really well done
[00:50:55] it is to crimson sky
[00:50:57] so yeah really good
[00:50:59] excellent I think that's it for the episode
[00:51:01] there's loads in there
[00:51:03] and we have talked quite a long time about this episode
[00:51:05] because it just so much going on
[00:51:07] at so many great moments
[00:51:09] and they're really really enjoyed
[00:51:11] other than that jundi
[00:51:13] and he notes other than the main points of the topic
[00:51:15] just one quick one
[00:51:17] and that's you know
[00:51:19] we see we do have a brief scene
[00:51:21] with the
[00:51:23] noticing the political shift in Osaka
[00:51:25] so he's been refused from the gates
[00:51:27] the main
[00:51:29] emissary
[00:51:31] here of the Jesuit Order
[00:51:33] of Portugal
[00:51:35] and his
[00:51:37] number two effectively
[00:51:39] they are talking about
[00:51:41] it being time to ally with Tarenaga
[00:51:43] because lady is she
[00:51:45] but also hates christians
[00:51:47] we find out here
[00:51:49] and they can see
[00:51:51] the attack on Tarenaga
[00:51:53] has accelerated since her return
[00:51:55] that she you know
[00:51:57] they note that she hates him
[00:51:59] that she is a child of a murdered busho
[00:52:01] so they realize
[00:52:03] the politics that she can have here
[00:52:05] at least
[00:52:07] the younger priest does
[00:52:09] and I do like
[00:52:11] the fact that when he suggests
[00:52:13] they need to ally
[00:52:15] with Tarenaga
[00:52:17] the head emissary
[00:52:19] and
[00:52:21] we need to pray on this
[00:52:23] you know let us pray on this
[00:52:25] because seemingly
[00:52:27] it would be
[00:52:29] unchristian
[00:52:31] to sort of do this
[00:52:33] but let us pray
[00:52:35] maybe
[00:52:37] we will be told to do it by
[00:52:39] God and therefore
[00:52:41] it's fine
[00:52:43] so pretend to pray
[00:52:45] pretend to get the word
[00:52:47] strategic thing to do
[00:52:49] exactly
[00:52:51] so I kind of like
[00:52:53] that ultimately
[00:52:55] Portuguese
[00:52:57] emissaries here
[00:52:59] in the form of the priests
[00:53:01] are now increasingly looking
[00:53:03] at the need to ally
[00:53:05] with Tarenaga
[00:53:07] yes interesting
[00:53:09] absolutely
[00:53:11] absolutely that part of the story
[00:53:13] plays out in the future
[00:53:15] sheba here
[00:53:17] sheba is the daughter of the
[00:53:19] mad king again
[00:53:21] we have seen play
[00:53:23] in many other forms
[00:53:25] again
[00:53:27] one of those stories
[00:53:29] when she was coming back
[00:53:31] after being sent away
[00:53:33] when her father
[00:53:35] was slayed
[00:53:37] so I kind of like
[00:53:39] that she is coming back
[00:53:41] with revenge
[00:53:43] and she does have a little bit of that crazy madness behind the eyes as well that she could want to level the entire palace if people don't do what she did
[00:53:45] what she wants them to do so
[00:53:47] while she's not on the castle
[00:53:49] they're working for her now and if somebody gets in the way
[00:53:51] she'll get rid of them effectively
[00:53:53] so that's
[00:53:55] partly why I guess
[00:53:57] Sugiyama and his family were
[00:53:59] were fully killed
[00:54:01] but also interesting just want to make a note of this as well
[00:54:03] her about to who
[00:54:05] ran to Tarenaga to tell him the news
[00:54:07] of what was going on in the saga
[00:54:09] he did leave the rest of his family behind
[00:54:11] so that he could make
[00:54:13] Tarenaga his daughter
[00:54:15] I think his pregnant couldn't get on the horse
[00:54:17] as he's trying to escape
[00:54:19] and they're effectively saying
[00:54:21] well you need to go
[00:54:23] but they're left behind in a saga
[00:54:25] which is very dangerous place to be at the moment i think
[00:54:27] especially for someone that's allied with Tarenaga
[00:54:29] absolutely
[00:54:31] good stuff John overall any final thoughts on the episode
[00:54:33] and I absolutely loved this episode
[00:54:37] I'd give it 5 fluffy nilowings
[00:54:39] out of 5
[00:54:41] so
[00:54:43] that was
[00:54:45] brilliantly done I mean I actually think this is really
[00:54:47] exceptional performance is nuanced subtlety
[00:54:51] and within the observations being done by
[00:54:55] the performers here in these different
[00:54:57] and these different scenes as i said
[00:55:01] at the T House
[00:55:03] negotiating for the T House
[00:55:05] I think in a saga with Lady Ashiba
[00:55:07] you know
[00:55:09] I think
[00:55:11] even in the flashback
[00:55:13] with Lord Ashakaishi Jinsai
[00:55:17] and his daughter Mariko
[00:55:19] and you know
[00:55:21] really really good
[00:55:23] I just think you know the directing
[00:55:25] really good
[00:55:27] the writing really good
[00:55:29] everything is just superb about this show
[00:55:31] so yeah 5 fluffy nilowings
[00:55:33] out of 5
[00:55:35] absolutely and the makeup on John
[00:55:37] let's give that a straight ahead again
[00:55:39] great stuff
[00:55:41] let's head over and get some feedback from our wonderful fellow warriors
[00:55:45] yes so we have some feedback in on chapter 5
[00:55:47] of Shogun first up we got an email in from Penny Lennax who says greetings there can John
[00:55:51] I love this show so much
[00:55:53] I wake up and choose the mornings and say
[00:55:55] oh new Shogun episode today
[00:55:57] I'm so glad you decide to cover it
[00:55:59] on the official Shogun podcast just a mark says the Buntaro Trudy
[00:56:01] loves Mariko Sama
[00:56:03] and describes his motivation as a deep need
[00:56:05] I don't see that at all in his actions or a manner with her
[00:56:09] he seems to resent her and in that dinner scene he humiliated her
[00:56:11] physical violence and special abuse
[00:56:13] don't seem like love to me
[00:56:15] nor does shooting those arrows so close to her face
[00:56:17] what do you guys think?
[00:56:19] maybe episode 6 will make this more clear
[00:56:21] I understand that there are language and cultural barriers to communication
[00:56:23] but in the few days it took for the phasen to get truly maloderous
[00:56:25] and frighten the rest of the village
[00:56:27] could Fuji Sama not have had
[00:56:29] Mariko Sama translator concerns to Blackthorn
[00:56:31] simple communication would have averaged some tragedy
[00:56:33] with this society's apparent belief in curses and bad omens
[00:56:37] I predict that the village will blame Blackthorn
[00:56:39] and his stinky phasen for the earthquake
[00:56:41] the opening title sequence is absolutely beautiful
[00:56:43] I wanted to give a shout out to Elastica who designed the sequence
[00:56:47] and composers Adakus Ross, Leopold Ross
[00:56:49] and Nick Tuba who scored it
[00:56:51] keep up the great podcasting penny
[00:56:53] that opening sequence is absolutely gorgeous
[00:56:55] isn't it?
[00:56:57] oh absolutely love watching it
[00:56:59] it really is i mean
[00:57:01] I love the music and i mean i think with Atakus Ross
[00:57:03] I love just like the electronic elements
[00:57:07] and synthesizer elements
[00:57:09] that he brings into
[00:57:11] the scores like he's done many a time
[00:57:13] such as with Watchman, with Trent Resner
[00:57:15] yeah of course
[00:57:17] Trent Resner and Atakus Ross being a real duo
[00:57:21] in scoring
[00:57:23] of different TV and movie themes
[00:57:25] yeah i think they started up with social networking
[00:57:27] and they've been doing loads and loads of stuff
[00:57:29] yeah so you know it's interesting
[00:57:31] Trent Resner is not on this
[00:57:33] but you can still sense some of that sort of deep
[00:57:37] dark synthesizer element to this
[00:57:41] toward the end of that opening sequence
[00:57:43] which is really good
[00:57:45] for sure
[00:57:47] it is isn't it?
[00:57:49] Buntaro is just like
[00:57:51] truly awful here
[00:57:53] and i mean i think that's
[00:57:55] the weirdness about it
[00:57:57] it's interesting that
[00:57:59] Justin Marx says that you know he does truly
[00:58:01] love Mariko
[00:58:03] so i think he'll be interested
[00:58:05] to see what comes up over the next few episodes
[00:58:07] yeah i feel like that's a premature comment
[00:58:11] to put on the
[00:58:13] official podcast from Justin Marx
[00:58:15] i think we haven't seen that on screen
[00:58:17] from Buntaro at all
[00:58:19] not at all
[00:58:21] we've almost seen him look at Moriko as a possession
[00:58:23] she's a lower class of human to him almost
[00:58:25] yeah i mean to your point Penny
[00:58:27] yeah i would have similar kind of
[00:58:31] view around Buntaro that he
[00:58:33] resents her it's like he resents the position
[00:58:37] that he's been put in with her
[00:58:39] this kind of arranged marriage
[00:58:41] which in a sense is no fault of his
[00:58:43] with that arrangement coming from
[00:58:47] you know
[00:58:49] fathers and dare i say
[00:58:51] taranaga potentially
[00:58:53] so i think his position is not great
[00:58:57] but he's certainly not
[00:58:59] sharad himself with sympathy because yes
[00:59:03] you know he has demonstrated that physical violence
[00:59:07] and abuse to her
[00:59:09] and so i mean i would agree
[00:59:11] with your interpretation
[00:59:13] it's certainly mine as well
[00:59:15] yeah yeah agreed and you know it's kind of
[00:59:17] like he has that complete resentment to her every
[00:59:19] story in this episode of what it is
[00:59:21] that mariko has been
[00:59:23] carrying from her past
[00:59:25] what she's been blamed for her father being
[00:59:27] being the killer of the last
[00:59:29] leader of japan effectively
[00:59:31] so prior to the tyco
[00:59:33] so it's like as if he's looking at her
[00:59:35] going you've ruined my reputation
[00:59:37] from the start so you've been
[00:59:39] married into my family and i've had to carry
[00:59:41] the shame of who you are
[00:59:43] and all you ever want to do is kill yourself
[00:59:45] kind of thing so
[00:59:47] don't see it in these episodes
[00:59:49] yes but no absolutely
[00:59:51] potentially there's something there in the future
[00:59:53] but i don't know why we don't know
[00:59:55] how we as an audience would have
[00:59:57] perceived that from puntera's action
[00:59:59] so far yeah exactly and i mean maybe
[01:00:01] it's the constraints of society on him
[01:00:03] as well you know
[01:00:05] and that is what has bred
[01:00:07] the resentment but surely
[01:00:09] you know in private
[01:00:11] he wouldn't need to demonstrate that
[01:00:13] or you know
[01:00:15] have some kind of discourse
[01:00:17] it just seems that the
[01:00:19] conversations between the two of them are so
[01:00:21] ten yes and all
[01:00:23] could and i'm really
[01:00:25] scared of him in a way like yeah
[01:00:27] absolutely she's very strong
[01:00:29] but she said to jump black
[01:00:31] the one before he even arrived in the house
[01:00:33] make sure you treat him with the respect
[01:00:35] he deserves because he can get
[01:00:37] very angry and then once he starts getting drunk
[01:00:39] it's watch out he's angry
[01:00:41] he's drunk he won't take any
[01:00:43] crap from you
[01:00:45] he's telling the story that he asks
[01:00:47] he's telling basically so
[01:00:49] i think as stinky fesans go
[01:00:51] it's interesting it got so
[01:00:53] stinky to be honest
[01:00:55] i think it was because they were hanging
[01:00:57] outside in the rain
[01:00:59] the village of arijo does seem
[01:01:01] to be very wet
[01:01:03] it is very very wet
[01:01:05] it's like Britain in Japan
[01:01:07] it is really
[01:01:09] so i think it's because
[01:01:11] ultimately because i do remember
[01:01:13] having fesans hanging
[01:01:15] and it affects
[01:01:25] really to age them but you do it in the dry and cold so that they don't stink
[01:01:29] i wonder if you got them first as well
[01:01:33] i can't remember now it's such a long time ago
[01:01:35] i wonder if we're supposed to take it that jump black
[01:01:37] they might think he is but these are not
[01:01:39] shes at all exactly but i
[01:01:41] guess from Fuji's point of view
[01:01:43] she's doing what
[01:01:45] her master commands
[01:01:47] i guess what her what jump black
[01:01:49] throwing commands the master of the household
[01:01:51] and so she would
[01:01:53] would she have the conversation with marico to explain to him that
[01:01:57] everybody here doesn't want to touch us
[01:01:59] you said if anybody touches it they die
[01:02:01] i guess it could have resolved the issue
[01:02:03] absolutely but
[01:02:04] again we're seeing the two different
[01:02:06] cultures last year and his
[01:02:08] misspeaking of
[01:02:10] anybody who touches it will die leads
[01:02:12] to this terrible tragedy in the household so
[01:02:14] so yes it would have cleared it up
[01:02:16] absolutely if they had that conversation but
[01:02:18] it's only a few days i think it's only two days or so
[01:02:20] marico has got her hands full with the return of her husband
[01:02:22] so yeah thanks so much penny for the feedback
[01:02:26] really glad you're enjoying the podcast and following along with us
[01:02:28] absolutely absolutely speaking of
[01:02:30] a terror the one thing i found out this week
[01:02:32] that like for some reason i didn't realize when we were
[01:02:34] broadcasting about that but these episodes that
[01:02:36] puntero is actually Fuji's uncle
[01:02:38] okay yeah no i hadn't really grasped that either but
[01:02:42] it makes sense with her marimozo as well
[01:02:46] and being her granddad
[01:02:50] or great uncle or so whatever it is
[01:02:52] yeah so um yeah
[01:02:54] draw at these family trees some while
[01:02:56] absolutely it's i guess a bit like european rule families
[01:03:00] it's very intertwined
[01:03:02] it could be but thanks so much again penny
[01:03:06] we also got an email from victor who says
[01:03:10] yo warriors wow peasant's sure had it
[01:03:14] off in 1600s Japan i guess almost clear
[01:03:18] the battlefield lord toranaga may have coined the phrase
[01:03:22] keep your friends close and enemies closer
[01:03:24] in reference to yabashige
[01:03:26] i can't say i'm a fan of jb's culinary skills
[01:03:30] but it was the plan for the peasant
[01:03:32] the jb untaro saki laced inner showdown was both amusing
[01:03:36] and a bit harrowing
[01:03:38] but taro surely is a master samurai
[01:03:40] if you could hit that gate post twice
[01:03:42] or surprise you could even draw the bow
[01:03:44] not much of a husband by western's terms
[01:03:48] hmm the delivery of joseon's head to ishido
[01:03:52] reminds me of the luke brazi
[01:03:54] sleeps with the fishes seen from the godfather
[01:03:56] the cinematography of the quake and mudslide were amazing
[01:04:00] it looks like taro naga lost most of his army
[01:04:04] what now
[01:04:06] lady ishiba seems quite the dragon lady seizing power
[01:04:08] this series has me totally enthralled
[01:04:10] sianara had a moto vondume
[01:04:12] thanks so much victor for the feedback
[01:04:14] i think the plan for the peasant was probably just to agit
[01:04:18] gusset and then probably pluck it in roaster
[01:04:20] and then pluck it in roaster
[01:04:22] and then pluck it in roaster
[01:04:24] that's what i would be thinking
[01:04:26] i think he possibly just wasn't at his home for long enough
[01:04:32] he really seemed to be around as it was
[01:04:34] getting rotten from the damp wet weather
[01:04:36] for sure
[01:04:38] i think totally agree
[01:04:40] you know the whole thing with
[01:04:42] john blackstone
[01:04:44] buntaro
[01:04:46] mariko
[01:04:48] amfuzhi was
[01:04:50] it was really interesting
[01:04:52] partially lads night out on the drink
[01:04:54] and and and durs
[01:04:56] and then suddenly quite harrowing
[01:04:58] with his wife safety
[01:05:00] certainly given how much sake he had drank
[01:05:02] and yeah
[01:05:04] definitely
[01:05:06] i think what is going to happen with taro naga now
[01:05:08] with his army having
[01:05:10] a lot of time
[01:05:12] and then
[01:05:14] he's going to have a lot of time
[01:05:16] and then he's going to have a lot of time
[01:05:18] with his army having
[01:05:20] been sort of severely depleted from the
[01:05:24] earthquake and the huge mud slide
[01:05:26] which you rightly point out
[01:05:30] you know it's amazing visuals
[01:05:32] and later Chiba
[01:05:34] i had said
[01:05:36] was such a class entrance
[01:05:38] really oozing
[01:05:40] authority
[01:05:42] in a world where she technically
[01:05:44] doesn't have any
[01:05:46] この前にあった客やおうはずにね。
[01:05:48] そのうまく I have a lot of big reactions to her
[01:05:51] 多いレアプシャルを使ってがたくさんいたかったな。
[01:05:53] すごい弱いよだったな。
[01:05:54] そうです。

[01:08:30] Fream islands live stream have earthquakes on the same scale at all.
[01:08:33] You may have read accounts from other captains that would travel across the world,
[01:08:40] he may have read stories about earthquakes but this would be completely alien to him
[01:08:44] that he could be these massive…
[01:08:47] It might be moving to Earth.
[01:08:48] Partially aware of it I mean you know think of Vasuvius, Southern Italy
