[00:01:05] Welcome back fellow Guardians to The Lanterns Podcast on TV Podcast Industries We are back with the 7th episode of Lanterns, the penultimate episode of the season The Jordan Boys' Legacy I'm one of your hosts Derek And, filling in for a very special John, I am Chris He is a very special guy He is very special, he's just not here with us he was bitten by snakes fearful snakes he was going across a lake and yeah

[00:01:35] he fell in and there was no HAL construct, HAL clone to save him. No there wasn't John's just away for work this week and we know that next week we're going to be recording a little bit earlier than usual and Chris won't be able to join us for that one so we decided we'll switch it up we'll have myself and Chris on this one, myself and John recorded our thoughts on Avengers Endgame Encore in the cinema this week as well so I've been on two podcasts this week and one for each of the guys and then John will be back next week for the finale of

[00:02:06] Lanterns. Ah it's going to be good. [00:03:33] showrunners for the show of course are Chris Mundy Damon Lindelof and Tom King who we've mentioned throughout the series two of those showrunners Damon Lindelof and Tom King are the writers for this episode as well so a bit of a touch from an alumnus of HBO DC with Damon Lindelof the former head writer on Watchmen and Tom King a DC writer a DC writer so this is a bit more comic focused a little bit more comic focused I think I think so and I think also

[00:04:02] it is going it is setting the groundwork for where the lantern themed DC part of the DCU will kind of go interesting so I think that's why those two have been picked or peaked for this well yes yes that and their showrunners so they get to choose what episodes they want to go on to themselves I guess nobody's going to stop them huh no well you Gunn could but

[00:04:32] maybe I don't think he would no I don't think he would I don't think he would Chris Mundy might have had something to say about it if he didn't want them doing it because he's the other showrunner but the episodes this time was directed by Alec Sakharov we've mentioned Alec a couple of times he was he's directed four episodes of Game of Thrones in season two, three and four epic director directed loads loads of TV including three episodes from the first season of The Witcher which we covered here I think he directed the first two episodes of The Witcher which got so much acclaim that show has continued on for four seasons with a fifth one

[00:05:02] hopefully since it's fully fully filmed going to appear at some point over the next year or two it would be not sufficient to have that final season actually air since we know it's been filmed yeah it's one of those ones it's like it's like Coyote vs. Acme it's like we know it's there can you just can you show us no no no okay you know they're just gonna like it's gonna be some random Thursday it's just gonna and it's out all the episodes yeah but they already did that with the Liam Hemsworth

[00:05:32] starring season 4 of The Witcher and they have this fifth one already in the bag for over a year now so yeah they've already dropped one season they need to drop the other season well no they could also be just waiting for Henry Cavill to get Highlander when Highlander comes out that's where they go hey you remember this guy yeah see he's cool look no here's the end of his show that he kind of got kicked off of anyway bye

[00:06:00] yeah but they'd have to get Henry Cavill to re-film all of Liam Hemsworth's scenes no they just have to bring him in right at the end and they just don't like they didn't with Liam just don't make change just like he just comes in right at the end or he's Cavalry like in Deadpool and Wolverine where he was he's just another universal multiversal kind of version of Geralt it could be

[00:06:30] it could be anyway Alex Sakharov also directed eight episodes of Ozark that's where he obviously got his connection with with Chris Mundy the showrunner of Ozark so so yeah so a well experienced director directing loads and loads of great television so great to have him on board for this intimate and galaxy spanning episode yes and with that Chris do you want to tell us what they gave us with the synopsis for lanterns episode seven the Jordan boys legacy

[00:06:59] sure in 1975 a young Hal Jordan is punished by his baseball coach for not being a team player this sets up a habit of a lifetime as Hal won't give up the game ball to the kid chosen to replace him back in 2026 the Hal Jordan

[00:07:29] refuses to cooperate with John Stewart to help solve the suspected murder of Hal Jordan and forces him to meet with Sheriff Kerry Kane to verify his claims afterwards the Halogram suspects foul play from Kerry and insists John check out Hal's storage without her upon opening Hal's vault they find a portal that leads to another planet which John recognizes as Antan's homeworld they travel

[00:07:58] towards an island in the middle of a lake but John experiences a hallucination created by the remnants of a fever-inducing gas within the rain clouds as visions of his father and his younger self accuse him of being afraid John points a gun at his own head the Hal Jordan saves John by pushing him into the water he yells he tells John the story about Hal Jordan's family fail save and that both his father and grandfather took their own lives

[00:08:28] this is Hal's family legacy leading John to suspect Hal may have killed himself arriving at the island John and Halogram enter the structure at the center and overpower Sinestro who tries to attack them from Guy Gardner that he

[00:08:58] had been broken out of prison when we saw Guy yes now I remember it was a dropped line but we were really speculating hard about what had happened how the hell could he have broken out of this insane prison you had to be a guardian to get into and we still haven't found that we just found here he is on a planet that Hal Jordan at least had access to yeah it was like Azkaban Space Caban I think they had to get their quota of Harry Potter references

[00:09:28] into their HBO show since they're coming out with their new show next year so we have to make sure we get as many references to Harry Potter as we can do you remember Harry Potter remember you remember you used to like it before the writer did what she did anyway we won't be promoting the Harry Potter series or watch no yes we will be talking about our top three moments from this episode won't we we absolutely will let's get into our top three moments for this episode we're going to start off with our

[00:09:58] power ring point number one four and our power point number one is love that we have the flashback that we were expecting for Hal Jordan but a very tiny flashback to a very specific period of Hal Jordan's life back in 1975 where he is playing a game of baseball or at least he has stopped

[00:10:28] a game of baseball from going ahead because why because the person in charge chose somebody else to take over from Hal's position as the I guess they call them bowlers in baseball so yeah so his coach tried to take him out of the game and put someone else in instead of him and Hal knew better so he kept the game ball in his hand and making the team forfeit sounds like a pattern that Hal has been repeating all the way throughout the rest of his life doesn't it yeah and well look

[00:10:58] you can kind of understand like poor little Hal he was two or three bases away from a perfect game he was pitching the whole thing he was gonna be great and the coach wanted to take him out and replace him with someone else who Hal didn't think was as qualified and could do it wouldn't allow them to get a perfect game you know what I love about the writing of this as well just to your point Chris you do

[00:11:28] believe him you are on his side we know how from the beginning of the series we want to believe that he's in the right here but what he actually says to his dad is I was pitching an almost no hitter dad so an almost no hitter is not a perfect game it's not the best game of your life it's not he hasn't had the perfect possible baseball game he's just convinced he's in the right here and his coach shouldn't have the choice to swap him out for somebody else and this is a

[00:11:58] little league baseball right this is a game there's no massive pressure on them here they're not in the world series they're not in a hugely competitive game his coach in school is trying to swap him out for another member of the team that

[00:12:33] when his coach goes crazy on his father going what's the other kid stats like he needs to get the game ball back apologize to everybody and we need to move along and his father won't let it go so they're two peas in the pod he's convinced that Hal is right Hal absolutely convinced he's right and once again someone in power tried to take away his job and he was like I'm

[00:13:03] the end of the league the competition like they've gone so this is the winning they were going to go win the game and win the season and this is

[00:13:33] belief in oneself but it's a learned pattern from his father from who learned it from his grandfather so there is a legacy of this type of personality which also carries over not just to the Jordan legacy but it's also in the Stuart legacy like this whole series really leaning into the predestined kind of the legacy that one leaves

[00:14:03] with one's father the not just one's father but like the mentor like the next generation so you have like who it actually even comes up really interestingly as well when very much later on I'm not going there but just to kind and he

[00:14:33] goes you taught me two things jack and shit and like again that again it's all about what you've learned from your mentor your father your grandfather blah blah blah blah blah so seeing this yeah okay we've learned where Hal is getting this yeah fast forward to after the coach scene we see them talk and they start to talk about the fail safe and this starts to get interesting because

[00:15:03] you start to hear what like okay well look sometimes people aren't going to come back be it from war from a plane from et cetera et cetera although his dad's planning to live to 100 and and he doesn't mention fully he's like there's some cash in there some coins some things some bits and a note but everything else it's not important it's not for you to know and then he transfers

[00:15:33] over this the key to his fail safe and you're like oh okay it's kind of a lock box they don't believe in a proper will and testament type thing it's like okay it's a what could be in house and it's interesting because we do know how has one too yeah so or we can kind of after this scene you make an assumption that okay what's in the box

[00:16:03] continued on but the legacy again we learn what the legacy is later on but that is the point where he is looking at his

[00:17:00] to how how as a young kid is worshipping his father as the test pilot and that's exactly the job that how wants to go into when he grows up here we don't see much of that at all we see the two of them watching planes and then we see how his father funeral as an immediate transition afterwards and how throwing in soil into the coffin of his father that's it we don't get much more of the story of who this guy is until the conversation later on with John

[00:17:32] yeah it is interesting as well that he's like you need to let the ball go but he doesn't so his dad almost is trying to get him to release the problem yeah so his dad is telling him how to stop the legacy it's only later that we find out that that didn't happen as well yeah he went back

[00:18:02] for the ball while they were sitting there and then went back for it after the funeral so he jordan family yeah yeah um anything else on the flashback anything else on the early days of uh of hal jordan that are in here no not really like we we we get i was hoping to see more of the the the pilot of the of jordan senior because we do

[00:18:31] we have seen just in the newsreel of the dad's jet crashing um um i was hoping to see more of that because i was hoping that that would also infer on hal's kind of hal being a fighter pilot like you you brought up which is we

[00:19:10] the other aspect of that yeah and the story he's told everybody that we heard in that initial uh first episode this first couple of

[00:19:41] last last tiny bit i love about this is just a transition at the end where we have hal uh throwing in the uh throwing the soil in and it cuts to 2026 with the hologram looking over the the grave of of of hal jordan going god damn it really like that with that let's get on to

[00:20:13] was back um we were pretty much right it is john wants to continue the investigation needs a voice of hal jordan to continue that but he doesn't get his own way at all it's not as easy as he thought it's a fun one but you are really like this is hal jordan you can kind of see the 2016 hal jordan that

[00:20:43] that cheeky grain but you can also see the nicer aspect of it like the one he was the green lantern he was back in 19 this he's from 2006 or is he

[00:21:13] he said when we meet him at the first or second episode on the road he said it's been 10 years since i've been copied yeah so yeah there you go um so it's fun to see this character and it's great that this is

[00:21:43] throughout the next few years if john stewart ever bloody charges the ring stop it driving your mental where it's like it starts out with five percent left we know that charge is a

[00:22:13] is that using out of the ring it's like oh my god just stop it i've got you know he says i've got we've got about an hour of talk time left and you're going don't use it on total crap then you

[00:22:43] john going kind of taking it back here because i've never got any compliment whatsoever from the actual hal jordan so really like that moment but you can tell there's a great element of the hologram where he's not just willing to be allowed to be used as a tool to do whatever john stewart wants he doesn't really know john he doesn't know anybody that's involved in this he doesn't know who killed hal jordan obviously but he's going to do a bit of investigation himself before he allows himself to be used as a tool which i

[00:23:34] and for a split second you do think it's like oh we're gonna see what's in the box we're gonna get there and then we don't and he wants to see carry he wants to know that this sheriff he wants that this person who hal was with so we then are brought to rushville high for the hat ceremony which is nothing we really

[00:24:04] have in ireland or in the uk it is oh we do chris we have it in hogwarts when harry's choosing what place he what school he goes to in hogwarts they have the hat ceremony so they've replicated this for a college football team that young Macon is looking to choose and then does yes so really all you see is signs for the hat choosing ceremony all around town i don't know why they have it everywhere so

[00:24:33] i from i did check it i don't know why it would be everywhere but i did think that this quarterback the young magon he is the four colleges that they are mentioning they are prestigious oh sorry navy army no so they are prestigious nashville the navy and their well-known college football teams and him going to be

[00:25:03] a quarterback on this he's going to be a big star from their little hometown of 1001 people so i kind of do get it but it is just and once again the focus on noah i am like okay we know he has something

[00:25:40] the focus on noah and i'll also say the focus on this character maggie who wants 315 thousand dollars um and keeps coming back to it over and over again with john

[00:26:20] it

[00:26:50] hat find find this out and you're still not telling us yeah there's there's absolutely going to be some kind of big reveal in the final

[00:27:21] did someone say they really like pie was there she works in the local diner which sells pie i was like i'm trying to

[00:27:51] now like because one of the guardians have put her there to watch over and is that why she's just messing with john yeah so but she was a kid

[00:28:21] we still don't know but the fact that they just keep pulling us back to them whenever they get the opportunity then we just don't know anymore so i guess that's going to be something big next week some kind

[00:28:51] pretty serious he was expecting that there would be visitors from the guardians he was expecting that there were going to be lots of people there celebrating the things that he done for planet earth and he looks really crestfallen when john tells him no none of them were there and john tries to cover it over saying yeah of course all the lanterns are there and they did the call back to one of actually lying or not

[00:29:21] and so john was like yeah i was standing right beside him no problem at all and he's like he's the size of a planet that's definitely worth standing beside it stop lying to me so really love those little calls in and again this is something I find really cool the hologram doing his investigation as he goes along he didn't ask for Kerry because he doesn't sheriff it just turned out to be that's the person that was going out with Hal I love that after the conversation with her he

[00:29:51] goes she definitely killed me so throwing another accusation for a potential murderer out there I do love that I know guilt when I see it and it did get me wondering I was like oh could you imagine it's her yeah we thought it was her from the beginning and then we went oh maybe it's Noah and then we were like oh it's definitely John

[00:30:21] and I love that even loads of possibility still and I think by the end of the episode there's one potential that we hadn't really considered beforehand that is

[00:30:50] thrown out at the end of the episode and I think by the end of the episode you're supposed to believe that that one's the accurate one which we'll talk about in our next point yeah I do like the theory though it is Carrie because if Noah is a man hunter and Hal found out yeah and there's no bond stronger than the mother's love so again you could that guilt it's a nice tieback to where it actually end up to being

[00:31:20] Carrie because she killed and she shot Hal and that guilt she's that Hallogram is seeing is because she is guilty from it because she wanted to protect her son who yeah it's an interesting one I like I don't know well I say I like it because it's very human it's a very human one I don't know if they'll do that with an intergalactic show they may go a bit

[00:31:50] more intergalactic planetary I don't know I spreading this show it's been a grounded show that has an eye on the heavens and the stars right that sort of feels like just one just one one on the ground one on the stars they have that view of this is a space show but it's not the space cop show and I think that was the feeling of the Green Lantern movie they went way too far way too

[00:32:20] fast without establishing characters that you can get behind I'd absolutely be behind another season of lanterns actually even if Hal and John aren't there but I really liked following these two characters and I'd love if they continue to pop in and out of another lantern season next season and you could go a bit more space based you could go a bit more space cops with the second season but I think this was a great set up season to establish how they fit into the universe a bit more and just to establish

[00:32:49] these two iconic Green Lanterns at the very least yeah no they will they will anyway if they ever do a second season you never know Chris yeah that's what I was going to get as I don't want to talk about until we talk our wrap up because I think there'll be a few threads left and we won't know until it's been getting good numbers but I still don't know if we're going to get announced they're massive numbers but the big problem here is

[00:33:19] that Warner Brothers has just been purchased by another company who don't really want to do stuff like this so they're giving them every reason to say we also needed a successful show with this company to bring in money and this is one of the biggest rated shows that HBO has had so if they're choosing not to do a second season it's either because the people involved don't want to do it or the people that just bought the company don't want to do it that's the only reason because by every other metric

[00:33:49] it absolutely should be given a second season if that's what they're looking for I just don't know if that's what they're looking for the final one I just want to mention with Hal I really enjoyed those moments we've got Kelly McDonald is just brilliant in this scene where she's seeing someone back from the dead effectively John had tried to prepare her beforehand going this is not Hal it might look like him

[00:34:19] but it's definitely not the Hal that you know and then he just pops up out of nowhere and goes you're over explaining a kid but I think she could have needed about another 20 seconds of explanation before he suddenly just appeared there the fact that she's able to touch him is a real surprise to her and then just the way he talks through her I thought was really cool where he's saying to her you know we have did we have a relationship where I told you

[00:34:57] every single Sunday but keep coming back because you're a big fan I love that version of such a good analogy isn't it another sports analogy for for Kyle Chandler of course but you have to do it yeah no I know it was a good one and you can actually understand that I was like oh no no no I get it it's like me and the Saints yeah I keep coming back to the put their shit I'm a Carolina Panthers fan and the Saints are better in the

[00:35:27] leagues than Carolina Panthers are I know but I also I didn't get a chance to talk about the Ravens and the loss against our co-host John and his loss to the Saints it was fun because he doesn't happen often I should have wrote that in I just didn't get a chance absolutely but enough about football from us I'm sure there's going to be a bit more football in next episode when we get that decision from Noah

[00:35:56] about what team he's going to go to because that's the most important thing that Noah has to tell us isn't it yes that is the most important I'm going to Navy okay thanks enjoy enjoy Notre Dame exactly but let's move on to power ring point number three yes planet fear is our final power ring point finally John convinces Hal to get him

[00:36:25] to go down and they go they find an Einstein Rosenbridge also colloquially known as a wormhole yes a poncho a bag and a gun you know and some water and some snacks for a hike oh yeah it's a good hike it's a good

[00:36:55] hike it's packed everything yeah it's interesting that's it I was expecting more and again we learn kind of we can make assumptions as to why not and things like that as the episode progresses but this leading them deciding well we can't just leave the wormhole here and go through because Kerry's gonna come here so let's go somewhere yeah I love that they went to the water tower absolutely yeah it's a good callback it is

[00:37:25] it's kind of just outside town it's it was the scene of Hal and his push because Hal doesn't kill but and he didn't kill Anton yeah he just he was going to explode he just farted him away like a tornado wind and it's an interesting like later when we figure out where this planet that the wormhole

[00:37:55] takes us to it's a cool thing to think about as well but that is it they are transported as they go through one call that I do like is in terms of the first steps for Jon Stewart he hasn't been off planet yes so he was like ask me if I'm afraid and Hal Graham was like what what what it's like ask me am I afraid that point is enough to kind of

[00:38:24] he kind of just push him give him that the his momentum to take the first step through the drive yes the drive yeah very good yeah it's really cool isn't it and then interestingly he gets to the new planet asks Hal has he been there before and Hal is like oh they all kind of merge together all the deserts outside of LA to me and he goes but I feel like I've been here before and it's actually because he had the images

[00:38:54] of the death planet and his alien people push through his brain to help them out find the Manhunter a couple episodes ago so this he learns this is the planet that they were on I think this is really interesting and again it's probably because I'm the most knowledgeable person of the Green Lantern stuff but when they were talking all I could think of they were saying there's this gas that's released which turns everybody on each other they all killed

[00:39:24] each other killed themselves because of this yellow gas that was released and all I could think of was Scarecrow from the Batman universe did Scarecrow get his hands on some of the fear gas from this universe and that's what he uses as his primary weapon or did he try and replicate it on earth or am I just thinking too much that it's all connected because it's not as connected as that maybe not right now but I think that's a way for them to say something like that that it was like

[00:39:54] he was working on a thing for Lex Corp or something no I went Tatooine because it's twins twin sun planet I was like oh my god they're on Tatooine there you go and the melted skeletons all over the place as well of course yes yeah because Ant Beru is you know everywhere yeah like dust in the wind it's interesting you see that floating city and I've been curious about that floating city for the longest time since we've seen it in the

[00:40:23] promos and trailers right and trying to figure out where what when how it's an interesting thing to find out that like well we're not even going up there that's not the important part of this planet yeah that it is a flashing blue light over in the distance that they have to get to and as they get closer it's then a flashing blue light on an island in the middle of a lake all interesting I did like

[00:40:53] the skulls yes so we did get to kind of understand that somewhat what their skulls look like of these alien race certainly not human skulls yeah no and I'm pretty sure they will use this as that of some form that these this planet was the birthplace of the red lanterns and that's because you can also use that for the longer time a lot of people have been speculating

[00:41:22] that Ant-Anne was actually one of the red lanterns okay from the comic books very similar because this is how the the whole story is ripped from how that red lantern was born and his basically the rage he felt from the death of his whole planet the manhunters so they're pretty easy for a red lantern yeah exactly so I do remember

[00:41:52] something about this where Damon Lindelof I think had said or Tom King had said that they had taken some inspiration from that character and because Anton's name began with an A people started speculating well that's of course what they meant what they said inspiration they meant that's definitely the character from the comic books but I don't know he's dead now so I don't know maybe who knows maybe they bring him back to life all things are possible yes but I so I like this

[00:42:23] the one thing I did want to call out right so they talk about fear toxins gas things like that that is what kind of caused the planet to be decimated that's what the Manhunter essentially said they released and we know that she said she was going to save the planet so I'm assuming if it was a dusty planet maybe she was like I release this gas and it's gonna fix the ozone or something like that anyway we don't that's not important what I did want to call out is

[00:42:52] a marine a marine sir who served didn't think about gas he was like okay there's been gas on the planet and you're like no no no no no you should have been the one like okay I'm just gonna put a bit of a mask here and I'm gonna tie something around my face I was like okay yeah that was the only bit I was

[00:43:21] they get to the boat they get on the boat they get start going towards and we'll get to what the whole story in the boat in a second but I was just I was like oh John come on that military training didn't pay off there I just thought it was just trusted how because how sticks his head in and then goes no this is fine it's breathable come on come on ahead like that's what he says so you know it could have just as easily his whole body could have exploded because he's out in

[00:43:51] space it may have different gravity so I think he wasn't taking any precautions and the bag that was packed how it was kind of go well that's everything you need so I do love the call later on when the holograms looking at John going through his experience of the fear gas and going well that's why the poncho was in the bag wasn't it like he's retroactively realizing why everything's in there you know you're going to be walking through a desert so you're going to need water the walk if the fear induced rain comes down from the sky

[00:44:21] you should be putting a poncho over your head but I don't know any of this until after the fact so not very helpful you should have put it on I do like that poncho though it was a nice poncho black it's a good poncho should we talk about what happens in the boat absolutely yeah absolutely firstly we do have the little kind of running down of the ring power which is why Hal disappears they have a conversation in the boat and then Hal goes away so that they can reserve

[00:44:51] the power and when he goes we get the appearance of John's father in the boat and then John himself both telling him to take the shot in the water the whole boat is surrounded by what looks like all of the apples that were ever it's a really interesting one because this is the fear eating away at John that he is afraid that he

[00:45:21] doesn't have what it takes to live up to the legacy that's being thrust upon him and I didn't notice it it's only in dialogue from when the hologram saves him that you realize John was putting the gun to his own head at that moment and if Hal hadn't come back and thrown him in the water he would have pulled the trigger and taken his own life because he doesn't even talk about what it is and it feeds so well into

[00:45:51] the Jordan legacy and the one piece that it is explained comes from and it's so such a well-written choice which is both Hal and John are not with they're they're they're without fear yeah they're broken yeah like that's not

[00:46:21] like being men who can overcome fear and not sorry being men who are without fear is not what they are they're broken men who are at this point able to overcome fear well yeah but it's just such a such a powerful moment yeah I was just so shocked when like I was not shocked no I was yeah no I was shocked I was

[00:46:50] I was like this is a really powerful moment it is really powerful kind of discussion points when you're talking about how these two men two heroes are vulnerable absolutely absolutely and you know there's there's just that reveal I guess from the hologram who we've as we said we you find out earlier that Hal Jordan had entrusted the information to carry that's how close he was to

[00:47:20] carry this piece of knowledge that's been passed down generation to generation among these men who or their male children anyway to tell them that basically you're part of the legacy at some point in the future you'll take your own life leaving other people behind they're more willing to tell their own children that's what's going to happen to them than give them the ability to deal with it and find

[00:47:51] real help from real people it's almost this moment in itself it's too late for connection between the two of them that he couldn't see in life I guess yeah like he said he says to him you saw Hal Jordan in pain you why did you travel across many states to come and see a person you didn't even like you saw him in pain why didn't you just listen to what he

[00:48:21] wanted to say because he clearly needed needed the help which again is an earlier in our conversation this is the third suspect how did he did he do it is he the killer and it's a fair point because he goes oh what about the gun well Carrie could have done

[00:48:51] she could have taken the gun away exactly it's an interesting point because when this then starts to come up I'm like oh that's a wrinkle in a show where you are talking about the everyone's like oh this is going to be the man hunters and it was all this and this is the death and then it turns out that it wasn't death at all that Hal had just taken his own life because

[00:49:20] of the Hal Jordan or the Jordan men legacy yeah yeah this is an interesting kind of wrinkled in the story it really is and you know you hear all the things that are said throughout this episode from the opening moment with his dad where his dad gives him the key and says my father gave me that when he went off to war he had no problem he had no fear of going off to war he just knew there was two things

[00:49:55] wrong we hear that his father killed himself in a plane crash and everybody thought well he's a test pilot he must have killed himself it was an accident which is the story he's been telling everybody else and the story we've heard before in the Green Lantern history that his father died in a plane crash because he was a test pilot well here it's saying he didn't it wasn't an accident and we hear repeated Kerry saying nobody in town liked him everybody wanted to kill him he spent all his

[00:50:25] time from the time he finished in prison which the hologram is disgusted how could this person end off going to prison how could this Hal Jordan that he was how would he go to prison he comes back to Rushville apologised to everybody in town every single day going door to door but they all hate him so much that Kerry suspects that anybody could have killed him well you know maybe Hal's taking his own life because he felt the pressure of hatred from everybody around him you know again you see that speech his eulogy that he wanted to give as his funeral is that he wanted

[00:50:54] everybody to be appreciative of him and for his life to matter and when he died the only people that were there was the future Green Lantern his ex who hated him an actual Green Lantern who didn't even know him and his current girlfriend and that's it so yeah is is that is the depression of everything that went on that drove Hal to be his own murderer effectively yep yep it's so I'm interested to

[00:51:27] yeah and what I really like about this is even in all that even if next week when we get a different reveal of who the actual killer is this episode in itself is so well put together the way it's written how well acted it is between these two characters who absolutely are going through mental health issues themselves regardless of what the outcome is in the next episode I

[00:52:27] this they put this so I don't think any either of our stars will get the kudos that they deserve for this scene should we talk about the island then absolutely yes yes let's talk about the final movement of the episode they get to the center of the island they get to the central building that they've been drawn towards you

[00:52:59] and it's Sinestro who it's a forge and Sinestro yeah and he just wants to get off the island which is interesting yeah yeah so this is really interesting this is where we get to speculation station this is just you have Sinestro for

[00:53:29] those in the with the comic book knowledge Sinestro was an adversary a well known comic book kind of villain and is a lantern of kinds multiple shades so I think they will probably play on that I think I am in the opinion that they are going to reveal

[00:53:59] some very interesting pieces that will set up potentially a second season okay with the guardians and the lanterns and things like that I think they they have to power up John Stewart and I think that's what this island is going to be about okay because if we think we have to get

[00:54:29] back to Rushville to solve Hal's murder and potentially put down the next generation of manhunters right so in order to do that Halogram and Jon Stewart need to get back to earth and more importantly Jon Stewart needs to become some form of a lantern right so I think that's where they are going with this yeah yeah and I think we will be the

[00:54:59] reveal of who broke Sinestro out will be a good one I have a theory yeah but I and I'd love to kind of say it but at the same point I'm kind of like it might be a spoiler so I don't know well we don't we know what's happening we don't know what's going to happen in the last episode and as far as I know it hasn't been even screened they only gave the first seven episodes to press who were reading it

[00:55:29] so all speculation is speculation right now the only thing I can think of is when

[00:56:16] going by John Stewart sometime after that Hal turned himself in and went to prison yeah we don't really know what happened between those two points yeah could he have broken semester right then and nobody noticed for a while could be or was it very recent or I took from the way guy mentioned it it was a new enough piece my theory is it is Liana the

[00:56:46] the guardian she wants she doesn't believe in the the green lantern court anymore she wants to build her own thing she pulls Sinestro out because she wants her own version of a vigilante and she's keeping him there we I think they're building up to that like a lantern war different course

[00:57:15] and I think that's how you can do that there's a whole thing about fear we know willpower is powers the green lanterns fear powers the yellow lanterns and we are on a planet full of fear and I think that's where we are starting to it's going to be an interesting reveal next there was an interesting conversation as well that was had between Hal and

[00:57:45] John and the boat another part of their conversation where Hal was asking why John went to Rushfield to visit him and he said well my mom called me and told me that you had an apology and he was going well hang why would your mom call you tell you and John was kind of going well you became friends over

[00:58:29] she did not like Hal Jordan at all and she didn't like him at all because he got the ring when her husband was supposed to get the ring back in

[00:58:59] the first episode that a man hunter can take the place of anybody it could be anybody at all while the aliens can look human a man hunter can take the shape of anybody else that you

[00:59:29] missed right so if you don't play with that idea you definitely shouldn't have said it out at the beginning of the season so yeah I think you're probably right I think Liana is potentially someone that could be taking the shape of John's mom I think she's a man hunter I'm not

[00:59:59] all to be revealed in the finale yes and that is where we end like that is there is so much to go through I think for me no matter what

[01:00:29] topics and threaded it through a and put it in a world where comic book lovers would love so that's where I see that Tom King brings some amazing story from just he Tom King is an amazing comic book writer so I think that's where his finesse comes through which is the more fantastical superheroic but for me Lindeloff is the the I

[01:00:59] can see his fingers over a lot of it yeah it's interesting you know that the initial discussions were apparently with Chris Mundy the showrunner for this show he was asked to come on board in the new DC universe as as the showrunner for True Detective as the showrunner for Ozark he was asked to I

[01:01:37] see all of them working together really but I feel Chris Mundy's fingerprints on this a bit more some senses of Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy can be similar I suppose but it doesn't feel as mystery box like the Damon Lindelof one where I

[01:02:14] when you watched every single episode you had somebody singing at you the mystery is just the mystery forget about it just watch what drama we're providing to you whereas I feel Chris Mundy's working towards delivering on the mysteries so I think that's probably why I feel a little bit more on what he's delivering here and that Damon loves adding being a very well seasoned showrunner for shows and Tom King's out in the DC lair because apparently Chris Mundy didn't know very much about comic books when he came into this

[01:02:44] universe so they're all working together very well and delivering a great show but I pulling away from the mic well that's where we leave it for our chat all about the lanterns episode seven really looking

[01:03:14] forward to this finale next week pretty short episode this this week but it was a very heavy one so it bits out as we discussed everything I am very happy with how the show has progressed I'm very happy with the overall kind of

[01:03:43] each episode has given a answer to a degree of something but posed one or two more it's good at ending on those kind of cliffhangers and this has set up an interesting okay well for this final 50 minutes 57 minutes whatever we're gonna get where are you going to what about

[01:04:21] yourself anything to add anything you want to bring out no really enjoyed it I'd love to give John's score he did give me his notes for the episode and all I can read is five out of five Hal leaks out of five okay that doesn't make sense so I don't know what the Hal leaks is so I'm obviously misreading his writing but a five out of five from John for this episode it's a leaky Hal we all have them when you get older those leaky Hals yeah only tiny

[01:04:50] note that I have for the episode was that I was slightly annoyed that this episode opened in 1975 number one because I was born in 1976 but also because it really frustrated me that every episode has been 2026 2016 2006 1996 and then I went back to 1975 why why couldn't it be 1976 it just doesn't make sense I'm sure maybe it's because you can't do little at the year that Hal would have been the age Hal would have been

[01:05:20] one year later we don't know his exact age I don't think we have an exact age for Hal maybe we saw it on his tombstone or something last week and they went oh no we have to put it in 1975 or maybe everybody was watching Star Wars that summer and nobody was playing Little League I don't know but yeah just a little annoyance that every year has been 10 years apart and for some reason that one was 1975 there you go

[01:05:49] I think we need a drink after that final discussion on this episode Chris let's get down to the Rushville Redneck bar for the quiz yes so the question number seven for this episode what is the number of Hal's unit at the Fortress of Storage we really like that name for a storage company Chris yes it is a good one and it don't do people know about the Fortress of Solitude

[01:06:19] or is it just a fun callback well yeah yeah we talked about it last week that it's from Superman yes which was that's the big central moment in Superman last year so a nice little touch on there we didn't mention in the episode that the key that Hal had left behind had the bird on it which was effectively his connection to John so John knew that something was down there which I just think is so he always knew he was going to be sending John down to the Fortress of

[01:08:17] upgrade from billy for carrie hal being locked away obviously allowed him to time to connect with his feelings john not willing to kill hal last week but quite happy to dig his corpse up and nick the ring from his cold dead hand how people change in 10 years possibly the first episode that's more filler than killer but still great to spend time in this universe thanks richard and hey very poor superman film that's a discussion for a different podcast but harsh man yes guy is i think we can still say the

[01:08:47] term douchebag i think we can well like we're old so i don't think the the kids the hip kids will be saying it uh but you know we can put in a six seven douchebag and then it kind of brings it in i think the kids will say six seven are about 28 now chris oh god we're so old but i think anybody would understand what a douchebag means how about that so even if people aren't using it they definitely know just looking or just spending two minutes in the company of guy gardner you'd know what it means

[01:09:15] um but yeah uh really good i love that i love that that cliffhanger last week was john uh taking the ring from the cold dead hand of uh of the corpse of hal jordan but not for the reasons that anybody thought he was he was literally doing it just to solve the murder that was uh that's his his um agenda right yes good stuff uh thanks so much for that richard i know we have your thoughts on this episode uh coming up uh but moving on to our next bit of feedback is on episode seven

[01:09:45] of lanterns from marie chris yes marie had this to say look forward every week to your lanterns podcast i first found your podcast during umbrella academy also a fan of sandman and the boys i have to admit i wasn't sure about lanterns at first i decided to stick with it when i saw you were podcasting about it so thank you gents what i am loving is how i have no idea what is going to next with a lot of the shows i at least have an idea or expectation where it's going lantern keeps

[01:10:15] surprising me i did think john wanted dead hal's ring then thought i was wrong when he buried him so glad he dug him up just so we can have hologram i was worried that guy guard wouldn't fit in on the show and they made it work i grew up with super friends so that was my only green lantern experience i really appreciate your comic book info was what was happening on the show a plot for one of the comics do hal john and guy all live together in the same comic

[01:10:44] from the latest episode i am wondering did hal put sinestro on anton's planet but hal wouldn't have had his ring then right so many things to think about what i really wanted to say is thank you for your podcast you guys are great if you hadn't been covering lanterns i think i would have given up on it looking forward to the finale but sad the season will be over thanks again marie from pennsylvania thanks marie great to have your feedback and so great to have you back from all the

[01:11:14] umbrella academy fun from the the our boys podcast with all of us and then when the boys covered sandman such a good show and shame we won't be getting more of that but hopefully we will get more of the lanterns in the future um in terms of your questions about the the hal john and guy yes they've all they're all lanterns in the same comics they're all green lanterns um

[01:11:43] and they've well hal jordan was the first one john then came in guy gardener came in in the 90s when they tried to make it cool um no no uh hal wasn't even the first uh green lantern oh there was a great sorry alan scott but he's earth two now he's been retconned as earth two he's not really a corp green lantern he was a green lantern with his own lantern and it was a bit more magical and earth based and blah blah blah

[01:12:13] see okay i just fair fair fine and john stewart came along in the 70s um when they specifically were looking for um for a more diverse cast in the comic books uh they didn't have uh didn't have very many black heroes and they wanted to bring in a black hero in the comic books so uh they brought him in the 70s guy gardner came around at 73 i think or 74 uh but was a background character for many years until the 80s uh when he came along um as a more central character um and yeah he's

[01:12:42] had some big stories but uh he is usually the goofy background uh version of of the green lantern but there's been thousands of them and i think right now or around around the the kind of re-emergence of the universe there was at least eight uh lanterns on on earth i think at the same time so uh so this initial setup that we had in the series of um there being one lantern who uh dies and the ring goes to the next lantern that's the only lantern that's around that's kind of the original story from uh

[01:13:12] from how uh hal jordan became the lantern but that's changed over time where to the point there were a couple of thousand uh green lanterns making up a whole core of uh of of uh of protectors i guess yeah yeah and they bring in they bring in kyle who is my green lantern i'd be so happy if he gets a shout out at the end that'd be amazing but it's really interesting marie you mentioned um about super friends because that show never really made it to europe

[01:13:40] um at all i don't remember it ever airing uh on any any any time when we were kids at least uh it was something i think that eventually was released on dvd uh over here or was available on on some of the cartoon networks but it was never something that we saw as kids uh over here at all we had a very limited limited number of channels and and kids weren't uh weren't treated with uh with lots and lots of cartoons to watch so so we never got uh never got super friends so again that's probably why our experience of green lantern is pretty limited

[01:15:36] right now it is at 47 percent and i even that's like oh it's gonna need to be charged at some point you would hate my life at the moment um the uh the thing to plug in my phone uh broke about three and a half years ago so the only way i can charge my phone is to lie it flat on a on a an external charger i can't plug in the phone anywhere so if i don't bring that with me my phone dies um and i have to charge my phone twice a day now because i've had it for about six years um so yeah so i very very

[01:16:06] often get under 10 percent and have the warnings flashing up and then it's like um we are uh slowing down your use of everything at the moment it will be it will be dead soon so yeah so i i understand the feeling but i get it very often unfortunately living life on the edge oh my god oh my god thanks so much patty great to hear from you yes thank you so much let's move on over to our discord server uh first up richard blaze gives his thoughts on this episode he said so

[01:16:34] penultimate episode always seemed to fall into two camps for me there's the balls out action episode that leads the finale to clear up all the story arcs from the season then there's camp two where it's frustrating slow paced one that drags the episode out for as long as it can so that the finale can go all in for me this week's episode hopefully fell into camp two don't get me wrong the dynamic between hal and john and carrie at times was fantastic and i'm not tired of these interactions but just felt a bit too like a dull side quest to travel from a to b to c

[01:17:03] then back to a again really hope they can land the last episode next week and don't leave too many threads open and unanswered it would be a shame if this series ends up a damp squib well i'll agree with you on that i really hope uh the series doesn't end up with the damn script i think i'm have really enjoyed the episodes a little more than than you have uh throughout the season richard um but i think they are driving towards an episode that does have to uh answer a lot of questions and does have to wrap up a

[01:17:32] lot so i'm intrigued to see how to do it definitely yeah i'm with you uh and i like i know i'm ashamed that you're not enjoying it as much uh richard but um i have high hopes that this is going to kind of land the the finale i i don't think it's going to be the damn script as you said um but even if it does it was a good seven episodes so i i can't as a whole of a season i'm like in one

[01:18:01] episode you can't land a plane that's fine because then they can just say oh it was all about how it was there being able to land planes not being able to land planes definitely from these last two episodes but thanks richard we also got some feedback from joe herps who had this to say i expected hal flashback but i thought it would be longer still good seems like a lot to wrap up in now next week's episode i wondered how much will get pushed till the next season

[01:18:30] though has it been officially renewed nope nope no not at all in addition to the mystery of hal's death sinestro if there's another manhunter etc the big one will be will john have a recharge working ring by the end yeah there's a lot there is a lot to wrap up and i think they'll probably land a lot of it i think there's just three points that they'll kind of hint at for the say a

[01:19:00] possible next season yeah or or they'll do something because again we keep forgetting this is now a connected dc universe so potentially we'll have sinestro in yeah they could put tomorrow next year you know something like that you never you never know yeah it's going to go in the universe um but right as of right now we haven't had an official renewal for uh for lanterns it would be great to have that but even though there is a page i think already on on imdb for the first episode of season two um we haven't seen an

[01:19:29] official renewal yet so uh let's find out next week do to do great stuff thanks joe oh just squeezing in some feedback from paula which came in just after myself and chris recorded last night paula says i agree with richard above this was a frustrating episode the sinestro reveal at the end didn't really compensate for the lack of more answers or maybe just clues for where this thing is all going sinestro cannot be hal's killer like i was thinking last week but i'm left with not many other theories another manhunter maybe things i liked the portable

[01:19:59] hole okay portal remind me so much of the dnd magic object the hologram being impressed with john's ability to keep it running without wearing the ring surely this means john will be a lantern eventually things i didn't like the harry potter island at the center of the lake the missing lantern to recharge the ring it gives me anxiety so overall i was disappointed and hope the final episode will resolve a few things no scoring this week i'd probably be a bit too harsh thanks paula for your feedback on the episode um yeah i guess a bit of a mixed reaction to

[01:20:29] this episode i hope our podcast added a couple of other things to be a bit more interested in i knew they squeezed in another harry potter reference that i didn't uh didn't notice the harry potter island that makes loads and loads of sense but yeah a great moment there with that with the hologram uh finally giving some kind of compliment uh to john and him being really happy to get a bit of a compliment uh it's a bit uh an important moment for the two of them great stuff thanks paulo i'll hand you back to the other bit of feedback that we got in and

[01:20:58] talked about last night finally we had some feedback in from paul tenshi lee who says i am enjoying what appears to be some mid-story episodes of another arc that can't possibly be wrapped up in one finale even if they make it two hours long great to see cal chandler play a less dickish jaded tired version of hal and i love how the hologram is acting like the kooky but fair trainer that john wanted i can't tell if it's deliberate that the hologram doesn't seem to remember his deployment by the water tower in 2016 because it would have caught at least the sight

[01:21:28] of zoe also all the kudos to kelly mcdonald for portraying like five different emotions on meeting the hologram finally a theory about where hal might have gotten the goo ball einstein rosenbridge i think he got it from anton stash or perhaps even from the last member of his team there's at least one unaccounted for driver from their time going to the ranch he could have gone to anton's hideout in coast city and found the goo ball there if he collected other alien tech as a lantern he could have hit stuff on himself while in

[01:21:58] jail and facilitated sinestro's escape and located to anton's world i guess we got lots of stuff to find out next week thanks paul great feedback there that's a really interesting theory that potentially all hal had to do was just hide a black goo ball on himself when he went to prison and then he might have been able to walk in and out of prison whenever he wanted to where would you hide the black goo ball though i don't want to answer that chris don't want to answer it i have i have an answer but i'm not gonna answer
