Welcome back fellow guardians, this week Derek and John are joined by Chris to chat all about Lanterns Episode 2 "Trust Fall" as Hal and John go on separate journeys in 2016.
Lanterns Episode 2 “Trust Fall” Synopsis
Episode Written by: Vanessa Baden and Chris Mundy
Episode Directed By: James Hawes
Back in Rushville in 2016, Hal tries to give John Stewart his first flying lesson. But when John creates an actual bird and drains the Power Ring, Hal tasks him to go to Coast City to retrieve his charging lantern and keeping the created bird alive throughout the trip.
While John is on his journey, Hal continues his investigation into the alien shoot-out in Rushville. Using the bodies of the dead aliens, he learns that William Macon had set up alien detectors at the football stadium. Hal tries to force William to reveal his boss but a warning shot from his army sends Hal to the mysteriously empty medical centre to heal his wounds.
Meanwhile, in Coast City, John retrieves the Lantern from Hal's mansion and feeds his carnivorous plant, Earl. As soon as he leaves he's ambushed and kidnapped by aliens who are convinced a shape-shifting being called a Manhunter is in Rushville. If John doesn't find the Manhunter they will blow themselves up destroying most of Nebraska.
John returns to town and asks Hal for information on the Manhunters. But Hal tells him it's above his pay grade. When John leaves Hal puts on his Green Lantern suit and flies to a prison planet where he confronts another lantern Sinestro. He will provide Hal with the info on Manhunters if he shares details about John Stewart.

[00:00:00] This is the Lanterns Podcast on TV Podcast Industries and we're discussing Lanterns Episode 2, Trustfall.
[00:00:30] Lanterns Episode 2, Trustfall. Which you now realize is actually an alien detector. Let me rephrase. You obviously realize exactly what's going on here. Congratulations. You've caught up to me.
[00:01:06] Welcome back fellow Lanterns. This is the Lanterns Podcast on TV Podcast Industries and we're talking everything to do with Episode 2, Trustfall, from this first season of Lanterns. I am one of your shining hosts, John. I am one of your other hosts, Derek. And rending out the Owen Guardians of Podcasting, I am Chris. Welcome back, Chris. And welcome to our DC Podcast, Chris.
[00:01:34] Our first ever time in this podcasting with Chris on a DC show. Yeah. I think. He hates DC, don't he? I do. Yeah, it's terrible, terrible. So bad. Definitely not the first. It's probably one of the very rare, rare occurrences of me being here. We might have had you on The Watchmen at some point. Yes. So you may have been on that. But yeah, hadn't been on many of our DC movies and TV shows. But I'm really glad you're here.
[00:02:04] There's no other TV shows on at the moment that we can use your talents on. And this show has been really, really good. So glad to have all three of us here for it. Yes. No, it has been very good. It is proper tune in, sit down, Sunday night, HBO quality shows. Mm-hmm. Yep. Took over from House of the Dragon in the slot on HBO on Sunday nights. So we get to see us early Monday morning having our breakfast, which is really nice. Absolutely.
[00:02:35] Bit of extraterrestrial breakfast. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Yeah. So it's all good. Nice House of the Dragon replacement here. But fellow Lanterns, before we get into our show, a quick reminder for you to pop on over to the website if you are checking us out for the first time to tvpodcastindustries.com where you can subscribe to the podcast on any green, blue or white lantern podcast player of your choice.
[00:03:02] You can also send a voicemail there because we love to get your thoughts, theories, observations, comments on all things to do with the Lantern series. Mm-hmm. You can also go by traditional email sending in your feedback to feedback at tvpodcastindustry.com. Mm-hmm.
[00:03:23] And, of course, we are over on, I guess what is becoming the elder statesman of social media, Facebook, over on one of the groups at facebook.com forward slash groups forward slash tvpodcastindustries. Mm-hmm. We are also on Discord and you can get the link to our Discord page on the show notes on this very podcast feed here. Absolutely. So if you're living in 1996, you can email us. If you're living in 2016, you can go to Facebook. Or if you're living in 2026, you can go to Discord.
[00:03:53] There you go. Yeah. An option for everyone. Also a reminder, the second question in our Rushville redneck bar quiz is coming up later on the podcast after we've gone through all of the show. That's not a redneck, John. That's a northern Englishman. It's not. It's a West country. West country. It's still northern. Yerp. No, it's Western. Cool, blimey, yerp. This movie, this show is pretty much a Western as well, isn't it? Yee-haw. Maybe it was the right choice. Exactly. Exactly. Great stuff.
[00:04:22] I think we need to get into the podcast about Lanterns episode two. Yes. Let us get on with our spoiler-filled discussion of episode two, Trustful. Derek, what are some of the episode details? Well, we've mentioned it last week. The showrunners for the show are Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. This episode was written by the showrunner Chris Mundy along with Vanessa Baden. Vanessa was an actress previously and worked on most episodes of Keenan and Kel. You may recognize her face if you go and check her out on IMDb.
[00:04:49] She also wrote episodes for The Morning Show and The Terror as well. And she'll be back for the next episode of this show, Lanterns as well, in the writer's room for the series. The episode was directed once again by James Hawes, who we mentioned last week. He directed the first episode of the show and worked on Black Mirror and Penny Dreadful. Oh, thanks. Yeah. Loads of other great shows.
[00:05:08] Yeah, I was thinking that Vanessa, the Morning Show sounds like breakfast TV and then going into The Terror, which was the thing about the ship, wasn't it? There was a couple of different seasons. It's an anthology show. Oh, okay. The Terror. So, yeah, but The Morning Show is about the people that work on breakfast TV. It has Jennifer Aniston in it, I think. Excellent. Reese Witherspoon? Reese Witherspoon.
[00:05:33] Yes, it's the Apple show that took away those two massive actresses from my view, and I haven't seen them in about 15 years. No, exactly. Or five years. I wondered where they'd gone to, and now I know. Apple TV is the answer, always. Yes, the one thing we aren't subscribed to. Exactly. It's your fault, Apple TV. Always. It's always tech's fault. That's it. But, John, do you want to tell us what they gave us with your synopsis for Lanterns episode two, Trust Fall? Sure.
[00:06:01] Back in Rushville in 2016, Hal tries to give Jon Stewart his first flying lesson. But when Jon creates an actual bird and drains the power ring, Hal tasks him to go to Coast City to retrieve his charging lantern and keeping the created bird alive throughout the trip. While Jon is on his journey, Hal continues his investigations into the alien shootout in Rushville.
[00:06:24] Using the bodies of the dead aliens, he learns that William Macon had set up alien detectors at the football stadium. Hal tries to force William to reveal his boss, but a warning shot from his army sends Hal to a mysteriously empty medical centre to allow his wounds to heal. Meanwhile, in Coast City, Jon retrieves the lantern from Hal's mansion and feeds his carnivorous plant, Earl.
[00:06:50] As soon as he leaves, he's ambushed and kidnapped by aliens who are convinced a shapeshifting being called a Manhunter is in Rushville. If Jon doesn't find the Manhunter, they will blow themselves up, destroying most of Nebraska. Jon returns to town and asks Hal for information on Manhunters, telling him of his deadline of 48 hours. But Hal tells him it's above his pay grade.
[00:07:15] When Jon leaves, Hal puts on the Green Lantern suit and flies to a prison planet where he confronts Sinestro. He will provide Hal with the info on Manhunters, but only if he shares details about Jon Stewart. Yes, that info was way above your pay grade. It was a whole planet, a whole galaxy above your pay grade. Literally, yes. Yeah, I would tell you that information, but you can't possibly know it.
[00:07:43] I need to get my suit on and fly to someone that might have the answers to this question. Every time they say Manhunter, I just get Nelly Furtado's tune in my head. Ah, very good. It's a Manhunter. That's a man eater, though. I know, exactly. Like Earl. Exactly. Well, and that's a triffit. It's a triffit. Yeah, that's what I was about to say. Or it's from Little Shop of Horrors. Exactly. There's loads of connections in here. But yeah, really interesting second episode.
[00:08:11] Breaking apart our two major characters here to have their own adventures already in just two episodes. Definitely. Yeah, I mean, I thought this was quite good, having them on their kind of separate little, well, excursions. One being more of an investigation. I like how that plays out with Hal. Well, and then John effectively is being told to shoo off to the imaginatively called Coast City. I presume by the coast. Absolutely.
[00:08:41] And of course, but he encounters more than he's expecting when he gets there. Whether it's the size of the house, whether it's what Earl actually is, as well as then his kidnapping. So yeah, I kind of quite like then how it all comes back together for that nice little ending. Some beautiful visuals, actually. And CGI of that kind of planet as well. Yeah. I completely agree.
[00:09:08] And I really want to just dive into the Hal and John kind of dynamics here. Or lack thereof. I think that's going to be the best part because you would have to throw a rock not to get a review where someone has kind of compared this show to kind of very much a true detective. That grizzled older agent detective and the younger recruit. Most people have. And you can see why.
[00:09:38] But do you know what? I'd actually take a Hal Jordan solo in his prime cocky detective show. I'd take that. I'd take that by itself as well because I think just looking at this episode, and we'll get into the ins and outs of it, it is a very fun, abrasive character that Kyle plays. Yes. And I think it's just really an interesting kind of take on it.
[00:10:06] But yeah, so we jump into our spoiler-filled discussion. Yes. Let us get into powering point number one. For it's a flying lesson, not a golf lesson. Yes, we have the flying lesson.
[00:10:29] I'm going to have to edit those out every week because I forgot to edit out what sounds like a golf hit. But that is a good one. Yes, yes. But. That one can stay in. That one can stay in. I'll leave that one in, of course. Please let that one in, at least. Yes, we're on to our powering point number one, flying lesson. Chris, you mentioned the relationship between John and Hal. And this episode opens.
[00:10:57] And you don't really know because last episode had three different time periods we were going. Is this John when he's a kid and his dad's doing some more training on him? Where is it? Where are we going to be? It doesn't tell you what city you're in. And it's just a bucket of water thrown over the head of John to wake him up as Hal walks in to take him out for his flying lesson. You know, this guy is an absolute a-hole to John from the moment this starts. And it gets worse, I think, during this flying lesson. You know, he gives him the ring.
[00:11:26] He tells him, just to imagine you're flying. You know, I'm a fighter pilot. I just imagine that. He's like, oh, you've never told me you're a fighter pilot, basically. It's John's reaction to him. And John doesn't fly. There is a moment where Hal thinks he's going to fly. Hal steps much further back, if you notice, than just in case he explodes off the pad, effectively. But it turns out John creates an actual bird. It was hilarious. It was either going to go one way or the other.
[00:11:56] It was that he wasn't going to fly, which he doesn't. Or he was going to really show Hal up. Yes. I do hope by the end of the series, he'll probably fly. That's the assumption I kind of get. Yeah. I do like that dynamic. This dynamic of, like, it's just ingrained. Like, everyone else just had to learn this kid, like, on the job learning. Yeah.
[00:12:23] You're the only person who's ever kind of been a rookie on this and trained post without a ring. So, I don't know. I just, I think fly and I fly. Yeah. Just do it. And I think that there is an element of cockiness from Hal on this.
[00:12:45] But at the same point, like, we do know that, like, he just, like, Avan Sword just sought him out and got the ring and that was it. Yeah. He didn't have his own Hal training. He didn't have a handover, certainly. Yes. And again, you know, we don't really know how it's going to be handled in this universe and how this version of Hal continued in his experience. He's been a Green Lantern for a very long time and knows how to use the powers.
[00:13:15] And he has got a connection with the people who created the rings. In comic books, there is a whole training regime that every Green Lantern goes through once they get a ring. We don't know whether this Hal ever went through it, but he certainly doesn't like the fact that John is trying to get the ability to use the ring before the ring has been given to him and before Hal has died. He certainly doesn't like that at all.
[00:13:38] And we kind of find out by the end of the episode, he really doesn't like the fact that this guy created a bird using the ring for the second time ever. This is a very, very difficult and very, very impressive thing that he's done. And Hal and John only finds that out because somebody else tells him. Hal was never going to tell him that.
[00:13:55] Yeah, I mean, I think this opening is just really great from the dysfunctional relationship because, I mean, what we do find is that across this episode, whether it's through the alien interrogation of John or whether it's, as you say, from John finding things out or not from Hal, it's purely dysfunctional. Yeah.
[00:14:20] And, you know, right from the get go, John is saying, well, why are you suddenly coming in to train me when we have a case to investigate? And Hal then immediately just takes the opposite point of view. But you wanted to fly, fly, fly, fly, fly, fly. He's kind of really in his face. So this is purely dysfunctional relationship and really screams throughout this and this separation, because ultimately here, Hal is just wanting John out of the way.
[00:14:50] So he can continue this investigation, in essence, on his own. Yeah. You know, it's even taken to the effect of, well, and whilst we're over there, well, we need the lantern because we've got to recharge this ring. He's already bought him the flight tickets, knowing that he probably wouldn't be able to fly. And I do, I love how John Stewart looks when he's trying to take off that kind of notion.
[00:15:15] And I guess if he did actually take off, that would be the pre-CGI takeover from it. But it would look really good. And you're right. All of a sudden, at this moment, he creates a bird instead of flying. And I kind of like that actually you don't really understand the significance of this, but it builds over the course of the episode.
[00:15:44] So really here, the only thing you have to go on is Hal kind of giving a bit of a look about it. Yeah. But, you know, but in the end, he just treats it as another training that will just keep the bird alive whilst you're away and bring it back. It's another part of the errand for John, along with feeding Earl, you know, picking up the lantern and so on.
[00:16:11] So this is just a really great opener that sort of solidifies this like dysfunctional relationship, but also shows how dysfunctional it is as you move through the episode. There's all these different little snippets come on board to fill, you know, the narrative here. Yeah. So it's really good storytelling.
[00:16:35] Yeah, because we learned that the impossibility of John Stewart keeping this bird alive is what Hal is fully aware of. He shouldn't have been able to create it in the first place. It's massively complex. It's a being that's alive, which is not something that he's ever created by the sounds of things. And he tells him, don't you dare come back here without that still alive after I send you to my house, basically.
[00:17:01] You know, so so he's tasking him with something that's absolutely impossible when he doesn't even know about it himself. And I mean, it was all there because even after I mean, in my notes, it was like, hang on, the bird's still around after he's taken the ring off. Yeah. Technically, by rights, my feeling is that the law of Green Lanterns would be. It wouldn't still be around. But that's what we assume. Yeah. Yeah. No, exactly. So, yeah, I just really, really enjoyed this.
[00:17:32] And I love how it kind of just branched this episode, this this opening. Absolutely. And just one other thing I want to add into this conversation about the relationship between Hal and Hal and John. It's kind of brought in by Zoe Macon, the woman that John slept with in the last episode. And when he meets her, when he comes back to town, he's taken a moment for himself, having a little bit of a breather and they have a conversation.
[00:17:55] And she kind of lays down who she is and the fact that she has William, who's taken her on board, someone that would never get the kind of riches that William has access to. And then, you know, says he's able to do whatever he wants because he's a white man who has a lot of money. And then asks John how his white man is. And John says to him, well, my white man sent me off on an errand to get his stuff. That's why he went on with his investigation. And the two of them kind of laugh about it.
[00:18:23] So that's also built into the character here as well. That not only is John doing his best to become the Green Lantern in the future, something that he believes Hal never did in the first place. Hal was just gifted a ring and became the Green Lantern. And John's being made to jump through all of these hoops, but he's now also being treated as an errand boy by Hal as well. So I like that little connection between the two of them in that conversation. No, I do.
[00:18:51] And I think there's really kind of a good convergence back both John back in Rushville, but also with Zoe. Because it's some really good conversation between the two of them. Because it's not that he just sent him on an errand, but he wanted him out of the way.
[00:19:14] And that in reverse is John Stewart sort of talking to Zoe and opening saying, but I'm trying to decide if I trust him. Yeah. And that's where he is. All this doesn't build trust with Hal. And this is kind of what he opens up to Zoe about. Yeah. Which I think is really, really good.
[00:19:43] There is a moment here with William's wife. And just as an aside, I just felt there was something off about her. Not in terms of the performance, but there was a moment where the camera, I think, stays on her. And it's like there's an intense-ness there. Will that be it? It lingers. It literally just lingers. Yeah. It's a Damon Lindelof kind of special. Linger. Yeah.
[00:20:12] The Lindelof linger. Yeah. It's the Lindelof linger. Uh-huh. Yep. Um, it's, we had it in Watchmen. We had it in a few other shows, like, where it's just like, hey, we're not going to tell you why this character is slightly important. Yeah. Well, I think, I think the fun thing we mentioned in the first episode, there's something about her character that she walked into a room. She spewed all of this information at John and got loads of information out of him. Here, if you, if you heard the conversation, John, you mentioned that he said, I don't know whether I can trust him.
[00:20:42] You missed the response from Zoe, which was, well, if you have to ask the question, then you can't possibly trust Rigo. Hang on a second. That seems to serve your purposes. Yes. What are your purposes? Agreed. And there's a big question that overhangs this entire episode, which I'm sure we'll get to in the investigation, which is who of these people is the Manhunter? And they are absolutely pointing a massive arrow at Zoe.
[00:21:03] I don't think it's her because they're pointing the arrow so strongly at Zoe, but it's entirely possible the reason why she's on the ranch and the reason why she has the connection with all the Macon family is because she's the person that owns it all. So, yeah, it's entirely possible. But I think they are pointing the finger quite strongly at Zoe. Yeah. I mean, the intrigue is great and she has an intriguing part to play here for sure.
[00:21:30] I mean, it could just be, you know, she's the one that oversees the NDA and the benefactor's wishes. And that's why he's with her. She could be the benefactor. Yeah. Or she's the benefactor. Exactly. Like she's a luther. I think there is almost every single character in this episode when I was looking at them other than Hal and John, I was going, maybe they're the Manhunter. There's definitely a reason why they could be the Manhunter. Yeah, exactly. So, yeah, that's the fun part of the show, right? That's the fun spec. It is. The mystery.
[00:21:58] Just to close out on Zoe, the interesting thing, and I think the reason they're pointing so directly at her is she was there for the whole original conversation with Hal and John in the bar when John first left with her in episode one. Yeah. She was there listening. And she was in, she was not completely out of focus. So she was kind of like a half focus on her in the background at all times. Exactly.
[00:22:28] So. We didn't know who she was, but yeah. But when you look at it, when you watch the episode for a second time, now knowing what's, you're like, oh, okay. So this, she has been, is being designated as someone who knows a lot, is able to get information. So if she's not a benefactor, if she's, she will be somewhat. Absolutely. I don't think she's the Manhunter.
[00:22:56] I think it will be that she's Argus or some form of governmental oversight, something. She will have connection to this. And I think that's why just she's able to get John to spew so much. Like, because you're looking at going, you're an army man. Yeah. You're not supposed to be giving away this much. Exactly.
[00:23:24] Like, it is literally the definition of a honeypot trap. Uh-huh. Yeah. So. But he's also, he's adrift, you know, because he's got the trust issues with Hal. And to be honest, I mean, the only other person, say, in town where I'm kind of thinking, it's certainly not William Macken because he slept with his wife. Yeah. And the only other person in terms of the sheriff, you know, he was trying to trample all over a jurisdiction. Yeah. And that, that's just how that played out.
[00:23:53] So in a sense at the moment, he's a little bit kind of, this is the person who literally he's latched onto. Yeah. Yeah. Physically, metaphorically. Mm-hmm. So, yeah, it's a really nice dynamic for this really sort of strong, confident marine to actually be really sort of questioning a lot of things. Yeah. And maybe just exposing too much as a result. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:24:20] I think, should we move on to our powering point number two? Absolutely. Tee it up, Derek. I think it's time for the links with our trip to Coast City. Indeed, the links course, the trip to Coast City. Yeah. And this is where we really are focusing on, on John on his own. And we have some really interesting aspects here.
[00:24:49] I think, you know, some of the comedy elements is for sure where he's like speaking with Hal saying, well, how much do Greenlandians get paid? And Hal's like, not enough. He says, well, your house would suggest otherwise, effectively. It's massive. Yeah. And he's like, oh, that was someone who I helped save or whatever, or one of his family. And so he paid me in a house. And there's like, literally, it is desolate inside.
[00:25:19] He's got a camping chair in his sitting room. One of those ones that you can put your beer mug in. And he says, I have a bed. I want to get the exact quote that Hal says, though, why he has this house. He saved the guy's son. And I didn't feel like emasculating him any further. So he bought me a house. So harsh. I think even the fact that he's got a little keystone. It's under the stone on the left or whatever.
[00:25:48] And I just thought it was going to be under. Because I thought the joke of it was there was just all these rocks. Which I thought was hilarious. And then it happens to be like a fake rock with a little. A little plastic stone. With a smiley face on it. And it's either a smiley face or a frowny face. Depending on which way I left it. Exactly. Really good. But you also see, again, he hasn't decorated anything in the house. But there is little touches of the history of Hal Jordan in here.
[00:26:17] There's a photograph of him with the Pope. Who would have been Pope at the time. I can't remember who it was. It was a Benedict. Yeah, Benedict. Photograph with him and the Pope at the time. There's also a photograph of him with all the kids from Harry Potter. Because it's a HBO show. They've got a Harry Potter show coming up next year. So they have to mention Harry Potter for the second time. That was so weird. But you're wondering whether Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern, provided some kind of special effects for the Harry Potter movies, maybe, in this universe.
[00:26:44] Or did he save the kids in the movie from some catastrophe during their run? Yeah, maybe. I mean, yeah. Or is it just that he just hung out with celebrities at the time? Yeah. Like the Pope and the Harry Potter case. Yeah. And I loved then the whole sort of case where the lantern is. I loved the fact that it was a little pocket dimension. I thought that was very cool. I liked the fact just seeing the bird fly into it as well. Yes.
[00:27:09] One of our listeners has pointed out something about a pocket dimension that we may not remember from the only other TV show that's in the James Gunn universe. I'll hold that off for the feedback from there. But I thought that was a nice little cool touch. What a weird one to say to someone that, again, hasn't experienced any of this stuff and goes, it's just a pocket dimension. Put your hand in and find what's inside it. Just reach around and you'll find a lot of it in there.
[00:27:35] But I loved the fact that he had to sort of put him on speakerphone so he could access it because of the security. It felt a bit like us today because you'd left your work phone. I did exactly the same thing today. So I was having to give him codes over the telephone so he could actually work today. No, it was just a very specific thing I needed. It wasn't to work. I was like, oh, yeah, this stuff can happen. It does happen. Yes. I loved the way it was even just up to the elbow.
[00:28:04] It was all the way up to the shoulder. And then there was a specific cling. Yeah. He just hit the metal. I found that fun. I do like the overall, again, this is that kind of, we know that in this James Gunn verse,
[00:28:26] kind of, that there's been years of metahumans and we saw that in the Hall of Justice in Superman. Absolutely. That there was that mural of just kind of throughout time of all these different people. Yeah. And I do like that Hall is just cynical now. Yeah. Like, it's just like, you can see, yeah, he met the Pope. He met the stars from Harry Potter and he probably was at a red carpet event because he was one
[00:28:54] of the first superheroes and just, oh, he was, and we saw on the first episode where he was interviewed on 60 Minutes. Mm-hmm. So, I like that he's like, just like, almost like a down and out. Yeah. Jaded, like a jaded down and out just kind of Hollywood star. Yeah. Yeah. Like, I know people are making connections to Watchmen, but they seem to make weird connections as if it's really like the TV show, The Watchmen.
[00:29:21] And the connection really is this character, Hal Jordan, feels like one of those jaded superheroes from the original Alan Moore Watchmen comic book. Yeah. The ones that used to be famous, the ones that used to be worshipped until things went really bad. And eventually they just went, oh yeah, okay, I've got powers, whatever. Yeah. And moved on with their lives. You know, that's this version of Hal Jordan here. And I guess it must be a really weird thing knowing that there's someone waiting in the wings to take over your job.
[00:29:47] The second you die, that ring disappears off and finds someone that's someone in the galaxy that is able to do the job as well or better than you are, which is something he knows. And he's been doing this a very long time. But yeah, he's a very jaded character. And I think that is definitely inspired in some way by the Watchmen book by Alan Moore. Could you call him the jaded jade knight? The jaded jade knight, that could be it. That could be it, yeah.
[00:30:15] We do have quite an interesting little password for the pocket dimension as well, where the lantern is held, which is Mogo doesn't socialize. That's right. I love that. Yes, we were watching, what's it, the Emerald Knights, the animation? Yeah, it did lead us down the path of finding out what the hell does this mean? Oh, it's a segment in this 2011 animated movie. We'll watch that right now. And we watched it and it was really interesting. And it was Nathan Fillion who was voicing Hal. That's right. That's right.
[00:30:44] Who we'll see later on in the season on Lanterns. It'll be interesting to see. And I didn't know he used to voice the character of Hal Jordan. And it's a one story movie, five parts telling you about different lanterns in history, basically. And one of them is Mogo. And the segment's called Mogo Doesn't Socialize. And the reason he doesn't socialize is because he's a massive planet. He's an actual planet that is a Green Lantern. So what a cool little touch to have Hal Jordan use that as his password.
[00:31:13] Because it probably is one of those stories where you go, ah, there's no way there's a planet that has one of these rings. No, there is. There is. That stays in your memory forever, right? Absolutely. Yeah, great stuff. Yeah. I mean, and then I think the other thing here is, you know, just for reference, he does find all of Hal's uniforms, some a little more armored than others. Yeah, that is just because I said last week that the Green Lanterns usually get their costume,
[00:31:42] their suit from the ring itself and can have it whatever way they want to. And Hal had made the comment that, you know, it really rides up and he doesn't like wearing it because it's really uncomfortable. And I was like, once he can play on the bed, he can just shape it whatever way he wants to. Not in this case. In this case, it's an actual suit that he has to put on. Yeah. So a bit very different. I'm glad about that, really. Yeah. Because then the ring can be used for things like bottle openers and birdies. Yeah. And if the ring falls off, so does the costume. Yeah, exactly. Which wouldn't be fun. So I think this makes sense to me.
[00:32:12] I think the other interesting one, to be honest, with sort of investigating Mogo, I didn't really investigate any backstory around Earl. So not a clue, other than it is a carnivorous plant. So I was thinking, ooh, Triffid. Day of the Triffids type thing. Or, yeah, Little Shop of Horrors. Something that's come down from space. I was absolutely singing, feed me Jon Stewart, like feed me Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors. Yes. Yeah. Indeed.
[00:32:43] Yeah. I love Earl. It's a cool little character. I like that Jon is like, okay, well, I guess that all makes sense now. He doesn't, he's a bit freaked out for a second about what the hell is this thing eating the meat. But he does kind of get into a moment and talks to Earl as if he's like, oh, stupid old hell. Well, he must have found this on some planet somewhere. And of course, I've got to take care of him now. You know, it just, it just falls into a routine with it very quickly. Yeah.
[00:33:10] I, for Earl, for me is the one where I'm very curious about how it's too weird of a thing to be a one-off. You know what I mean? Whether it's, I'm hoping maybe it's, I don't know. Even if, even if the play payoff is like flash forward in episode six to 2026 again, and it's Jon Stewart and Earl. Yeah.
[00:33:37] But this time Earl is, did you guys ever watch the Harlequin? Absolutely. Yeah. So like, that's Earl. And he's going to have like a talking plant Earl. That is exactly what I was thinking of. Yes. That's what it was reminding me of as you were, as you were talking. I was going, oh, maybe it's the talking plant from Harlequin and Poison Ivy's house. Maybe it's that. Yeah. That's why I'm kind of hoping like, we'll just have this deep, deep voice, Earl going, oh no, hell's gone.
[00:34:07] It'd be great. It'd be great. But the other big thing that happens in Coast City is that the aliens come to take out Jon Stewart. They kidnap him from outside the house after he's gotten the lantern. It's a really interesting one, isn't it? Like he gets kidnapped, he gets knocked out, thrown in the back of a van, but they are still very careful. They still make sure that his bird's been taken care of and they still make sure that he has his bag with the lantern in it when he gets taken away. Because we find out later that they want to actually talk to him and they want to recruit
[00:34:36] him into their plan effectively. So, yeah. Yeah. I mean, ultimately, they're quite reasonable, I think, to some degree. Yeah. You know, they're not torturing him. They're literally laying out their reasoning. Yes, they've kidnapped him. And I think that's where you think, oh, okay. You know, I like the fight. I like all that action sequence. I do think he's got quite a distinctive run, shall we say? Old Jon Stewart.
[00:35:04] But when he's running up the highway the wrong way. Just when he has that fight in the back of the van, I have to say that small quarters fight was excellent. The photograph is really, really good. To have just that very small space and be able to use it for such a long fight was really good. And then he kicks through the back of the door and runs down the highway trying to catch up to his bird, which I think was very cool. He's jumping off cars trying to catch the bird.
[00:35:30] I like the dive over the car as the bird's gone through the two open front windows. Very good. That was quite a nice little touch. Very cool. And then, yeah, as you say, there's a moment where it does almost feel Terminator-like or as if the footage has been slightly sped up as Jon Stewart runs past. I think it's just his running style. Yeah. But it's very distinctive. Yeah. I think maybe it slightly takes me out of the situation. It's not like kind of, you know, who's the classic action run is Tom Cruise.
[00:36:01] Yeah. It's not that. But I kind of quite like it because I think, yes, like that's just what happens. I would be horrific running in an action way. It looks like Alan Richardson as he plays Reacher. Like you said, your frame is too big to be running at that speed. Yes. That's exactly it. And I think the whole issue was I think they did speed up the alien chasing him because obviously
[00:36:29] he had some kind of quite high jumps and they gave that extra pop of sound effect when he would kind of smash Jon into the ceiling. And if you like with, it's like just showing you that he's a bit powered. Yes. Different compared to Jon. Jon. And then they just, that run is just, it just looked off. It looked like he was about to take off.
[00:36:54] And that's when I thought when he was jumping and grabbing the bird, I was wondering if that's where he was suddenly going to fly. And it turned out like he absorbs a bit of power from the bird or something. It just made no sense. It just looked. But overall, great fight scene. Yes. Wonky ending. But I think actually you're right. I think it's just the sheer size of, and I think that's it for me.
[00:37:22] But I like the little touch as well in the shiny van surface of just seeing his face as it knocks into him and knocks him out. And then this is where you see him next being interrogated. And as I say, I think the aliens are fairly reasonable here. They're trying to lay out their position, their cause.
[00:37:43] And again, it's another little touch point around how, a bit like we got last week, where the holographic Hal Jordan was saying, well, surely I would have taught you this. You know, here we have the aliens convinced that he should know about man hunters and what they are. And he has absolutely no clue what they're asking him about.
[00:38:10] And like he says, you're about to talk to a man who knows nothing. And I really do not know about anything about man hunters. And this is when you realize that the aliens here have now, we don't see the footage that they effectively project into his mind of their species being consumed, destroyed by the man hunter. But I just love how that plays out with the guy.
[00:38:39] This is how society is destroyed. This is what you're going to view. And I don't need to try and convert you. I just need to show you because you don't know anything about them. This is what they do. But it is also, you know, setting it up around Rushville that man hunters can hide in plain sight as synthetics. They're able to create and they're able to go and pass as anyone.
[00:39:08] And there is that interesting little moment that they say as well, that by taking on human form, they can be killed just like a human. Yes. Because, yes, they could go in and set off all their sort of exoskeletal kind of explosive devices. Exactly. Well, that's their plan. If John doesn't help them out, they will go in in 48 hours and they will set themselves off and blow up basically half of North Dakota. And they're that powerful if all of them arrive there.
[00:39:35] But a really big distinction being made here between the aliens who can present as human and a manhunter who can be anybody in that town. That's the big distinction between the two things. The manhunter could be anybody and could change shape into anybody else. But the aliens are aliens who have who have who look human and can act as human, but they're not.
[00:40:00] So if you think back to episode one, the four the four supporters of the other team who were in town who were shot dead and the guy who blew himself up. Nobody knew who they were. They were strangers in town. But even the other supporters of the other team didn't know who they were. So they were just aliens in human form. But the manhunter could be sitting right beside you at a bar. It could be your wife. It could be your your it could be a partner. Could be friends. But you don't know who they are there. The manhunter is taking that shape.
[00:40:29] So really big distinction between those two factions that we've now got. Kind of cool. Yeah. And we also know that the manhunter has been there for years at this point. Yeah. We and by the end of this episode, we're there to led to believe it's been there since pretty much. Jab and Soar brought the manhunter there. I do wonder. I do wonder who these aliens will end up being.
[00:40:59] Is that something that we will find out? Will we get that flashback? Will we get those information that John has been given? Yeah. Is this is this essentially setting up some of the other lanterns, different colored lanterns? Well, yeah. Yeah. Is this setting up some of those? Yes. Or just some of the other lanterns. Are they presenting as reasonable? Because relatively speaking, they are.
[00:41:28] But actually, you know, they're also potentially not to be trusted. But it does. It adds more context and layers to Waylon's interrogation, where he says, like, this is about vengeance, because you do have, you know, you have that lead alien saying, you know, the collective loss of our society will be with you for some time.
[00:41:55] And, you know, he's like, see how a manhunter destroys your people. See it, John. He says one thing I really liked about this, and I don't know whether it's important or not, but you see his bird gets agitated just before the aliens come with their little device to put against his temple. And so that's kind of like an extension of his consciousness. I really like that touch where the birds just gets more agitated.
[00:42:24] It's chirping more loudly because he doesn't know whether it's a dangerous thing that's about to happen to him. Exactly. Exactly. And so that was a nice little point. Yeah. And the only connection we've heard about it is if he loses concentration, the bird will disappear. That's it. He's created the construct. If he loses concentration, the construct goes. So the fact that they're showing that as agitation in the bird is really interesting. Yeah. Yeah. Great stuff. And this is just a quick aside.
[00:42:51] Do we think we'll get like a proper alien looking alien? Yes. Because obviously, if you look at the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern film, when Ryan Reynolds went to Oa, we got a full swath of different lanterns because the lanterns are all different. Do you think we'll get a scene like that just based on like majority of all the other?
[00:43:20] So there's two questions in that, Chris. Do I think they'll go to a planet where there's thousands of different lanterns who are all aliens and all looking very different? I don't think so. But I think we'll get an alien that looks alien. Okay. We finally saw Supergirl this weekend because it's available on demand. We never got to see it in the cinema. We finally got to see it this weekend. And one of the comments we made was they really, through every single possible species in this, she goes to multiple planets and interacts with tons and tons and tons of different versions
[00:43:48] of aliens, which are all in the DC universe. And because there's only been three movies in the DC universe so far, we haven't really seen a huge amount of what James Gunn's alien universe looks like, let's say. All the aliens outside of Earth. So I think we're going to see a few here in lanterns because we've already seen tons in Supergirl that they can just bring over to the studio and film them as being aliens with a ring, right? That they are members of various Lantern Corps.
[00:44:17] So there's already been some out there that they've created for Supergirl. So that's why I think we'll see one or two. But I think they're probably trying not to do anything that the Green Lantern movie did in the past, the previous one. Yeah, I hope they don't overload it with aliens, to be honest, because I think with Supergirl,
[00:44:37] the issue is that when you have one alien, for example, to do and it's really cool, then suddenly you've got two or three or four and then all of a sudden there's one that just looks like a blob of snot or something. And you're like, well, it's already got the outfit that is green, so fine. But it's like, yeah, just less is more, I think, with aliens. Yeah, that's fair. To be honest.
[00:45:07] But they did do a lot in Supergirl. Yes, they did. So they certainly have a few costumes that they can bring out and stick into a suit. Agreed. Yeah, that's fair. But we leave this with, yeah, as I say, with then with the aliens effectively saying you've got 48 hours, otherwise we're going to go in and blow up Rushville because there is this mortal enemy residing in Rushville. Yes. So, yeah, that's where it's left. And I think John heads off home.
[00:45:37] And in the meantime, I think this brings us to our power ring point number three. Yes, the other big part of the episode in our big two-hander here, we have the Rushville investigation as Hal has kicked John out of the town so that he can do his own investigation and not have to answer any more questions.
[00:46:02] Which is, again, another great moment from the opening of the episode where Hal is being asked what you're going to do. I'm just going to sit here and enjoy it. It's a real big dick move, really. It is. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I really enjoyed this part. Just seeing Hal go into the town, going to see him, and then he's like, oh, no one. I did wonder, and you do wonder what's going on. Absolutely. Because there is no one about it.
[00:46:29] And I'm like, oh, God, is the whole town actually aliens? Like, you start going, oh, all the usual, like, oh, could it be? And it's all they're just in the town hall having a conversation. But seeing him fly up to try and find them and then falling. He splats. No superhero landing here. Absolutely. He just, like, does a full three, two, one. Go. Yeah. Powering, running out of energy. Three, two, one. It's done.
[00:46:59] Yeah. I don't know whether your suspicion, Chris, is confirmed just yet. Or is this town aliens or not? Is everybody there? You know, I think you are supposed to think that. It feels like it's supposed to be something out of X-Files where Hal arrives into town, looks around and goes, hang on a second. There was a big explosion yesterday. There was everybody bustling everywhere all over the place. And now nobody's here. I think you're supposed to suspect that. Agreed.
[00:47:24] And I think you're supposed to suspect that even more later on when Hal walks into the medical center and no one's used it at all. This town has been established for quite a long time. And it looks like nobody's been in the place to keep them well. Are they either being kept alive or being kept well by an alien presence? Or are they all aliens? Is definitely a legitimate question at this point. Yeah, definitely.
[00:47:51] I mean, even I love the deserted town. I think what makes it even more creepy are those kind of creepy town councils. I mean, the last one I saw that on TV or movies was in weapons. And I'm just like, do you know, it never ends well, does it? Having this big kind of communal town council. Just let sort of committees sort these things out, I guess. Absolutely. Not everyone needs to have a say. Oh, really? No, I know. It sounds really weird. But I'm just there going.
[00:48:19] You know, it's like because they're disgusting. Like, I love the fact that Hal walks in and goes, oh, you're talking about me? You're talking about me. You know, he's like, really? You are talking about me, aren't you? And in the end, it's not. It's a decision that is about whether the lads on the football team should actually forfeit their next game. Well, whether they're in the right headspace to either play the game or forfeit the game.
[00:48:47] And I'm like going, I think that's between the parents, the PE teacher and probably the school. And I'm like, so I just thought that was kind of interesting that it kind of had been expanded out into this town council. But I love the fact that Hal thinks he's the one being talked about. But are they? But where are they having that conversation? Because the way that the coach is put on the spot, he's a bit like, ah, um, ah. Well, that's true.
[00:49:16] Yeah, they were definitely talking about Hal. Kerry goes, no, what we were actually talking about was this. And then goes, coach, you were about to say something. He's like, um, oh yeah, I was supposed to say something like 25 minutes ago when we were originally talking about that point. But for the last 25 minutes, we've been talking about the fact that a Green Lantern is in our town investigating an alien presence. That's true. And I do like the fact that Hal says, it feels like the town wants me gone, which makes me want to stay around. And I kind of like that.
[00:49:43] And again, it's whether, again, the metal detector or an alien detector. So if it's not, if they're all aliens, they're detecting other types of aliens. Yes. And so is the Manhunter a collective thing that can, you know, assimilate all of them together? The whole town is just made up of one Manhunter. It's a biological T-1000. Maybe. Where it all just morphs together.
[00:50:13] Because, like, yeah, like you say, you then have the medical center where Hal's been the only patient. Oh, I like it. All the stuff is still bubble wrapped or in its wrapping. And all that kind of stuff. So, I mean, the town of Rushville, basically the only people who aren't part of the Manhunter is Kerry, because she's not from there originally. Exactly. Maybe. There you go. Can I give you my pitch?
[00:50:43] Go. Go. So, Macon keeps talking about how colonizers have come in and they took over and they weren't prepared. Uh-huh. I believe the Manhunter has made a deal with the people of Rushville, which is like, I will help keep you safe. I will keep you free from disease, death, things like that. But you need to keep me safe. You need to help me out. Yada, yada, yada.
[00:51:09] I believe then the reason Kerry's kind of almost locked in a relationship that she doesn't want to be in is I think something happened to the kid. Right. And I think the kid is now part, has been kind of... Assimilated. Not assimilated, but like has been given, like he died and was brought back or he was gravely injured and was brought back. And that's why she can't leave because if she leaves, the kid will die.
[00:51:38] So, once you go to Rushville and you take in some of the Manhunter technology, you stay. And you have to stay. And that is why Kerry is the way she is because she's like, she doesn't want to be in that marriage. She doesn't want to be. And it could also be why we see that Zoe is with Megan. She doesn't want to be there. They don't... She's become part of the deal. She's become part of the deal.
[00:52:06] And I think that's going to be somewhat of the piece that we kind of hear about. It's that kind of like, they made a deal with the devil and the devil is the Manhunter. Exactly. It's keeping some of them happy. Yeah. I think it's... Yeah. And it's potentially, you know, small town. None of them want to leave. You know, head of the valleys, whatever you want, you know, all that kind of stuff or possibly being held against their will. None of them can leave because they're part of the deal. Exactly.
[00:52:35] But having said that, then 2026, we do see a relatively... The town's still there, not necessarily the ranch. Kerry talks about Noah still being alive. You know, so I... But I definitely agree with, like, the NDA. There's a contract. How far does that extend for sure? I think as well with Kerry Kane, like you say, we find out that she's from Gotham. So she's not from Rushville.
[00:53:05] But I think that conversation between her and Hal as he's recovering from that gunshot in hospital, you know, where... In essence, she's pleading with Hal to stop undermining her and to, you know, her respect and her authority. Because otherwise, as she says this, and this is her father-in-law, the narrative is that Macon is the one calling the shots. And I can't let that happen.
[00:53:34] And I'm trying to keep the town together, you know, that it will all tear apart if I'm the only one sort of holding this all together. So there's something really interesting there around Sheriff Kane's position here, not just with the Macon family, but I think more widely in Rushville after that conversation. Yeah.
[00:54:00] And I like their little conversation as well where, you know, I would ask why are you still here? You know, a girl would like to know. And, you know, he asks her question, why I'm still hanging around? And again, you get it's... There's a gut feeling here for Hal. His gut's never wrong. Yeah. It's never wrong. And...
[00:54:27] That's the hard-boiled detective part of this series, really, isn't it? Hal is going with his gut all the time, you know? Whereas Hal then responds back with the question about the detectors. You know, he says, and that does make a boy wonder. She does say, she gives some kind of story around it that, well, there were three people dead. The other guy had obviously passed through the detectors and hadn't been identified. Yeah.
[00:54:54] And so that whole detector, the alien detector, metal detector thing is good. I love Hal carting the bodies around. It's so great. So, again, all from... All with hardly any dialogue at all. It's just him and his own, you know, dragging bodies from the morgue. You're going, what is this? If you haven't seen episode one, you wonder what's happened here. Why has he got this naked body that he's dragging around the town and pushing back and forth through a metal detector?
[00:55:21] Even when he goes up and pulls the crowbar out of the back of his car and takes the grill off John's rental car to bring that through the metal detector. I was wondering, does he actually expect the metal detector to work? The football game was like two days ago, wasn't it? Why would the metal detector still be on here? But he already has a suspicion that it's not really a metal detector. He has a suspicion. So he just wants to try it, see if it will set off a metal detector. And then he notices the one in the town meeting.
[00:55:51] He notices the little detector that's in there and decides to test the bodies of the aliens. So the only thing I would say is he has a metal wrench on him, yet he takes the grill off the front of the car. So I'm like, he could have just walked the metal wrench through the metal detector. I don't know. I don't know. Not enough metal to need more metal. He wanted it to be body size, maybe. Possibly, yeah.
[00:56:20] He also noticed that, as you said, in the town hall that the metal detector can go off. And he looks at his belt earlier and things as well. He had a metal belt. It should have gone off. Yeah, exactly. So that does set the suspicions for him. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. You mentioned a little Easter egg there, John, as well, that Sheriff Kerry Kane is from Gotham. So is this the mysterious sequel to Pennyworth that we've been waiting for for many years?
[00:56:47] Because in Pennyworth, famously, Martha Kane, who is Bruce Wayne's mother, has a child at the end of the series. And it's a girl by the third season. It's a little girl. It could be a little nod to that. Yeah, it could be a little nod to the fact that Kerry Kane is connected to the Kane family. Very different universes, though.
[00:57:07] Could she be connected to Kate Kane, which is Batwoman, which is, I think, because I was going, can you imagine the mysterious benefactor is the Waynes, Wayne Enterprises? Maybe, yeah. Like, that's just a nice way of kind of, you don't need to bring in Batman. You don't need to do any of that. You can just bring in, like, Wayne Enterprises.
[00:57:33] Well, that's why I kind of like that it would be Martha Kane, because that's Bruce's mom, you know? We don't know how they're going to bring in Bruce Wayne in James Gunn's universe. Maybe they'll bring him in and a new origin story for him. And he's a younger guy to all of these characters that we're seeing right now, you know? Yeah, that's true. So Martha Kane might still be alive right now. And she's involved in Wayne Enterprises with Bruce's dad, you know? 2016, could be, could be. You never know. You never know. Yep.
[00:58:01] So, but yeah, I know there's loads of Canes in Gotham. I think they're even all connected to the Arkhams and they're all connected to the Waynes. There's loads of connections there around the Kane family. But I just wanted to make the joke that we finally got a Pennyworth sequel after all these years. So there you go. Could be. A sequel, but in different universes. But in a completely different universe, yes. But we may finally be finding out what's happening to the female member of the Wayne family that never got a sequel, is my point to say. Exactly.
[00:58:31] That was all. But yes, a really interesting investigation. Love it. I love Hal really silently going around the town, fixing all this stuff up. I, again, love how they're using Sheriff Kane herself in these episodes, because now we've had two episodes in a row where Green Lanterns are in her town, if you count John as a Green Lantern. He tells her the whole thing he's discovered. And Sheriff Kane went, yeah, I knew that. And this time, Hal, dragging corpses all across town, starts talking to her and realizes
[00:59:00] everything I've done here, you already knew, didn't you? Yes, I did. I know exactly what it is. Will you stop undermining my authority? I am the investigator here. I know far more about this town than you do. Stop drawing attention to yourself. Because, as you said, John, if the attention is drawn away from her and towards William Macon and his narrative on aliens, then she loses control of the town. So people have got to stop interfering with her investigation. So another strong, powerful moment for Carrie in this episode. So, yeah. Yeah.
[00:59:30] So, I mean. What more does she know? I think the interesting thing is that the investigation, you know, becomes illuminated further with Jon Stewart coming back, confirming his abduction interrogation and his encounter with Waylon's friends, I think, as he describes them. And this notion that there's a manhunter in town. But he does also say they think the Guardians had him here and they don't trust you.
[00:59:58] So that's another little twist here that comes from this is that despite them really maybe leaning on Jon Stewart here, they certainly wouldn't trust the Guardians. And that maybe explains a little bit more about Waylon's kind of tone towards Hal as a Green Lantern. And, you know, Hal does ask, have you told the Guardians?
[01:00:27] And he says, no, I report to you. Yeah. Which is interesting. Yes. It seems like Hal thinks that Jon has the ability to contact the Guardians. Yes. And I'm still not sure if he does. I'm still not sure if he does. I'm still not sure if this story that Jon has said that the Guardians chose him to take over from Hal, but even though Hal's not dead yet, I'm still not sure whether that's his father concocted that story and has made it sound convincing enough. He's been told it since childhood.
[01:00:57] No, I mean, sorry, to Hal. Has Jon's father concocted the story and made it to be able to be presented to Hal? Has Hal lost his connection with the Guardians? Is that why he's asking, has Jon been in contact with them and told them all about this? We just don't know. But it's just unusual that he would be saying to a guy that doesn't even have a ring, can't go off planet. He said that multiple times. I can't go off. I haven't been off planet.
[01:01:22] And he's asking him, have you spoken to the Guardians and told them about the information that you've got here? But I think this is where the trust thing between the two of them, the dysfunction, because it is that he's like, well, the Guardians seem to think you're a big deal, hence why I'm training you. Like there's clear resentment there from Hal. Like it's probably even like, you know, now we're training our replacement rather than,
[01:01:46] you know, getting killed and the ring just flying off to its chosen next Guardian, or Green Lantern, I should say. So I think it's just a nice dynamic. But you're right. I think hopefully it will come out over the course of the episodes. But at the moment, it's a good source of friction and tension between these two. I do wonder, because at the end we are introduced to Sinestro because Hal goes off. Absolutely.
[01:02:15] And like we do get an interesting kind of back and forth. But I do wonder if there is tension now between the Guardians, Oa Guardians, and the Green Lantern, or Hal, like because we're told Hal saved the day. Hal brought down Sinestro. He put him away. I'm wondering if there's more to that story.
[01:02:40] And the reason Hal very quickly goes, did you tell the Guardians? Because he's like, well, I don't trust the Guardians. The Guardians lied about XYZ. Maybe. And like there's more to it than that. And that would be a great way to not have to go to Oa and show a thousand aliens with Green Lantern rings, wouldn't it?
[01:03:05] If he's broken off connection with them and he's just the protector of that sector on Earth and hasn't actually been out talking to the Guardians. That would be kind of cool. And yes, you bring it up there. The final scene of the episode, the big pin or the big cliffhanger for the episode is Hal talking to Sinestro, a character we haven't been introduced to in the show. But as you can definitely tell from the name, even if you haven't read a comic book, he is Sinestro.
[01:03:36] So he is definitely a villain. The fact they tried to play him as a hero in the last movie is one of the reasons why the movie didn't work. They tried to play him as a hero in the comic books and you knew he was going to become a villain. So it didn't really work there either. So he's always been this villainous character, Sinestro. So a much better way to introduce him here. I'm so happy they introduced him in a prison as the villain. But I love this choice of the dialogue that's used for the cliffhanger, which is basically
[01:04:05] tell me about Manhunters. Well, that's only the second greatest threat you have, Hal Jordan. Tell me about Jon Stewart scene and credits roll. So by dialogue, is he saying Jon Stewart is the biggest threat that Hal Jordan has ever faced? Yep. Or is it something else? Or does he just want the information on Jon Stewart? He knows about Jon Stewart. How does he know about him? He's in a prison on another planet. But how would he know that he's a massive threat to Hal Jordan if he is?
[01:04:34] Or maybe he's so ego-orientated that he knows he's Hal's biggest threat. Hal Jordan's biggest threat. Exactly. Yeah. That would be much more likely that Sinestro is still a very big threat to Hal Jordan because he's the villain. Despite it being a prison planet, despite all the tech, it's still as leaky as Arkham Asylum. They'd probably just fly a drone over. Absolutely. We are in the DC Universe. Drop a satellite rig.
[01:05:04] Yes. Yes. Get him out of there. Yeah. Exactly. So yeah, no, it was a good ending though. Really enjoyed that. Yeah. Just that. Just it's almost like you just sense the whole series panning back into widescreen with just that final bit. Yeah. You know, it's all been very much Rushville, Rednecks and so on. And now we just have this kind of real epic sort of last few minutes of this episode.
[01:05:34] I have to say, I know it was in the original trailer, but I loved that shot of when Hal arrives on the prison planet and flies into it with the, it looks like an ice planet almost when he's arriving in. It's snow covered. It's awesome looking. Really cool shot. So yeah, they are. I know there might be, it might feel like it's being kept as a smaller show because we see them, you know, riding, people riding horses and it's an investigative show in a small town, but we're already in space. We're only at the end of episode two.
[01:06:02] So yeah, they'll, they're just using the budget in different ways as, as shows have to do these days. Right. But yeah, you could think if you watched one scene of, of house of the dragon and they're, they're standing in a, in a castle shouting at each other, you might think that's a small show and then you see massive battles with huge dragons. So they just use their budgets like differently than a movie would. It doesn't have to all be spectacle on the screen. Sometimes it's just amazing to watch characters talk to each other. Right. Yeah.
[01:06:31] And that's what I think lanterns has been doing for the first two episodes. Speaking of which, any other notes, any other points that you wanted to talk about from the episode that we haven't talked about so far? Nothing from me. I was just hoping that we'd get a name of the prison planet. Yeah. That, that was one, just because obviously I'm, I'm curious to see where, how that kind of is, was that OAP, was the white kind of snow or is it just.
[01:07:01] Something unique. Is it like, because we did see the cop car above the, as he went down to the trench or the spaceship. So I'm just interested to see kind of what it was. And I'm hoping we do get that next week. Yeah. I'm sure we'll be seeing Sinestro next week on that planet and we'll find out, or maybe in a couple of weeks time and hopefully we'll find out how he got there. We'll get another flashback to maybe 2016, how Jordan and how he captured Sinestro. That'd be, that'd be kind of cool to do it that way.
[01:07:28] I only had one other note because I'm sure they were intending for us to see it. I just thought it was hilarious that the motel where Hal Jordan and John Stewart were staying advertised the fact that they have cable HBO available in every room in the place, but it was with the new HBO logo or the most, a very recent HBO logo. And it was definitely saying, just so you know, you're watching HBO right now, everybody, because the bird flew over and sat on top of the sign, just to make sure you were paying
[01:07:57] attention to HBO right there. So, and this one final note about the bird itself, which is, again, you know, can't be overstated. This is something that is very difficult for lanterns to do, if not impossible. That's what he learns from the aliens and how looks at him and goes, that must have come from very deep in your psyche for you to be able to create something as, as difficult as that. And John goes, no, it's just a construct and just squashes immediately in exactly the
[01:08:27] same way as Hal gets rid of any of his constructs. So Hal is looking at him going, how the hell is this kid able to use my powers that I've had for 30 years in the way that he has and just get rid of them? That would probably have taken Hal six months to create a construct like that. That's what it seems like. Again, don't know exactly how the constructs work in this universe, but that's what it seemed like. And isn't wearing the ring. So like even the alien says that is a wildly impressive construct.
[01:08:56] And in fact, they credit it to Hal Jordan, who says, how is Hal controlling this from this distance using the ring? And he just goes, no, it's mine. So yeah, it's really good to know that that's massively significant, that little bird. Yes. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We might see the other one in the future. So I think with our final notes onto our final thoughts, Chris, what are your final thoughts
[01:09:24] for this episode of all lanterns? Really enjoyed it. Just it's a great way of putting it all together. I think Derek, you said it best at the beginning where it's talking about how they are teasing each episode very much with that kind of, oh, this is primetime Sunday viewing and you need to be here next week to find out what happened. And they're just doing that so well.
[01:09:52] Um, it did make me wish to a degree that I could bundle a few of these together and just kind of like, but like I watched them multiple times anyway, so I still will catch up, but it's just that kind of like, I really wanted the next episode. Yeah. And I do sometimes miss that first Amazon, uh, prime video kind of release schedule where we get at least three just to really sink our teeth into before it goes weekly. Yeah.
[01:10:20] Um, but loving it overall very much. So loving this episode. Yeah. Excellent. Derek, what about yourself? What are your final thoughts? Yeah. Really strong second episode. Again, I was really surprised that they broke apart. The two major characters had one do the investigation in Rushville and the other one, uh, find out from the aliens, the, that there is this big presence of the Manhunter in Rushville. I thought that was a really surprising thing to already have an episode too.
[01:10:46] And again, because of the previews for the show talking about how small a show it was going to be, how a lower, a lower budget true detective like show. And then by the end of the second episode, we have Hal flying off into space to talk to an alien about possible other aliens on the planet. You know, it's a much bigger show, um, than people are giving, we're giving a credit for in advance of it coming out. It's been really interesting. The acting's been fantastic. Uh, the setup's been really, really good. And yeah, I'm really looking forward to the next episode, which is all I can ask at this stage in the series.
[01:11:16] Uh, finally, John over to you. What's your final rating on this and what's your final thoughts on the second episode of the lanterns? Yeah, I really, uh, really, really, really enjoyed this episode. I'd give it five sunburned Sinestros out of five. What a timeline that guy must have. Um, he did, he did look like a, um, I don't mean that in a bad way. No, I liked his look, but it always, he's always reminded me of just having sat out in the sun for too long. Absolutely.
[01:11:42] But he does, he does look like a sunburned Vincent Price, doesn't he? With a little tash. Yeah. Yeah. But he's always been tashed, hasn't he? He has. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. Um, yeah, no, I, I just really enjoyed this again. I think just the central mystery is really engaging. I mean, it's almost to the point of, oh, I wish I hadn't known about the Manhunter. And I'm wondering, well, is it a bit of a red herring as well?
[01:12:07] You know, is it something where whatever's going to go down is going to go down by middle of the season? Because again, even just with the 48 hour timeline, suddenly it feels like it's really concertina. Um, from what the aliens have said. So just really enjoyed this sort of the splitting apart, coming back together, just that it illustrates the gap between these two people. Are they going to have to find the trust?
[01:12:37] You know, what is happening in Rushville? So just that central mystery is really, really good. Uh, and I think the ending again, just so far they have nailed the landing on the endings, um, to just have that impetus and intrigue moving across the week for the next episode. Um, and I think this one going to this prison planet and having Sinestro and just the delivery of those lines, really fantastic.
[01:13:05] So yeah, uh, five sunburnt Sinestros out of five, maybe five sunstroked Sinestros. Anyway, um, we'll see how he feels next week. See how he feels next week. Exactly. Um, but I think with that, we can go on to our Rushville Redneck Bar Quiz, fellow lanterns, and of course, fellow quizzers. Yes. We definitely need a drink after, uh, after that episode once again. So, uh, we are on to question two, John. Yes, absolutely.
[01:13:34] Uh, question two from this season of the lanterns. What two types of meat does John Stewart feed to Earl Jordan? It's not a dentist. It's two types of meat. That's a little shopper horror's reference, of course. John, do you want to give the question one more time? Yes. What two types of meat does John Stewart feed to Earl? Well, fantastic. That's the second question of eight.
[01:14:01] Uh, at the end of the season, when you get all the answers correct, email them into us to feedback at tvpodcastindustries.com and you can be with a chance of getting your hands on some lanterns goodies. Uh, that's the same place you send your feedback into us, uh, for each and every episode we record hopefully every Tuesday after the episodes come out on Sunday. So you have a bit of time to get your feedback in on each episode. Uh, we have some feedback in our episode two. Yes. Uh, first up from coffee and vodka over on our email. Uh, greetings fellow flighty defenders.
[01:14:31] On the surface, a solid installment in an interstellar procedural giving us our villain and couple sweet superhero props. Beneath it, political commentary and super heroic insecurities with Hal ready to see John miles high with an uncharged ring and one less replacement. Kerry's patient explanation to our hospitalized Hal concerning small town power structure illustrated what wonderful acting and exceptional scripting looked like when combined.
[01:15:01] Even the bird was given context. And we got our first glimpse of Sinestro. Talking through the layers, social issues, comic lore and everything else would take pages, not paragraphs. So best to stop here. Short of saying so far, so cosmically great. Five dead ringers, missing man hunters and dented rentals out of five. Peace and take care. Coffee and vodka. Mm-hmm. John's got to check his insurance after the, uh, after the, um, the car rental, uh,
[01:15:31] had its grill ripped off by Hal, doesn't he? Yes. Yeah. And, and the alien goo on the seat. Absolutely. Yeah. I think that's known as alien goo. Uh, yeah, totally with your coffee and vodka. The, uh, the acting in the episode and the, the scripting of the episodes. Absolutely great. They've done such a great job, uh, putting together the series. Oh, I, I can only agree with that as well. Um, and I can only say that, uh, coffee and vodka is pages and pages of lore.
[01:16:01] Um, yeah, I'm thinking the same in terms of some of the parts of where old school comic lore could be putting in here. Um, but definitely interesting to see where it goes from there. Absolutely. Absolutely. And one little thing that you pointed out there that we didn't even mention in the episode, um, the flying lesson for John, uh, was on a battery that was, uh, very, very low charge. Yeah, absolutely. And I was telling him, you go ahead and fly there, mate.
[01:16:31] Um, there's about 1% battery left, um, before you fly off and he could have just plummeted to his death. Absolutely. That's, it's a real good point that coffee and vodka, because I think like I was talking about the resentment side of things, it was coming more from, he said, well, the guardians think you're okay, but equally, yes. Um, an uncharged ring, uh, and one less replacement would, uh, yeah, see a little splatter human goo, I guess. Exactly. Exactly. Thanks, coffee and vodka. Yeah. Thanks, coffee and vodka. Yes.
[01:17:00] Thanks, coffee and vodka. Over on Facebook, we also got some feedback from the one and only Harvey Locast over on facebook.com slash groups slash TV podcast industries, where he had this to say, hey guys, loving the show so far. As a Nebraskan, I thought it would be fun to let you guys in on some of the accuracies of the show. In the first episode, when Hal was grilling the alien with the football facts, he was getting them all right.
[01:17:27] In the second episode, when Hal says to the sheriff, I swear to Tom Osborne or whoever you worship is dead on. Two, Tom played for and later became head coach for the Nebraskan Cornhuskers from 1973
[01:18:10] to 1997. I went to school up in that area and I live in Omaha. It was a 10 hour trip one way. Wow. So yeah, even high school football in these small towns is everything. Mm-hmm. Thanks, Harvey. Yeah. Friday Night Lights very much kind of showed me back in the day that like these small town college football, these small town high school football kind of towns, it really is huge. It is your kind of bread and butter.
[01:18:38] It's the lifeblood of a lot of these small kind of social elements of the community. Exactly. And that's the end joke here, isn't it? That's where Kyle Chandler got his massive break. That's why he's so well known all across America is because he starred in Friday Night Lights for five seasons. If he got one iota of football knowledge wrong in these episodes, that's I think probably why they chose football knowledge to be the thing that Hal talks about in that first episode.
[01:19:05] I think it's a little nod back to his most famous role. But yeah, you're totally right. I lived in the US for a while. And yes, college football, massive, especially if you live miles away from the central state where the NFL football team is playing, your local college football team or even your local high school team is absolutely massive. You've got nothing else to go to on a Friday night. Yeah, absolutely. Loving these Nebraskan insights, Harvey. Indeed.
[01:19:35] Because I was like Tom Osborne. I was like thinking, that's not like a Mormon character, is it? The way it's like it's another kind of religious offshoot. So I'm glad you've, because I didn't really bring it up at all. So I'm glad you've clarified that. That's really good to know. You worship the god of football. Yes. And yeah, I mean, that's long road trips just to go watch football for sure. So thanks so much, Harvey. Absolutely. Thanks, Harvey.
[01:20:05] We also had some feedback in from Alan Thomas, who says, I was super high on the pilot five bottle openers out of five, so I was hyped to watch the second episode. Unfortunately, I thought it was a pretty big step down, although not a total disaster by any means. I rate this one three pocket dimensions out of five. Even mentioning pocket dimensions makes me a little sad, though, because it reminds me that we may never find out what happened to Peacemaker. Absolutely. John Cena off in another pocket dimension by the end of Peacemaker. It certainly is.
[01:20:32] But I don't know, there's a little part of me that I'm going, well, we have had this pocket dimension here and technically what's going on in Superman with the creation of the other dimension as a prison for everybody that wasn't doing what Lex wanted. I'm kind of going, maybe we'll have, that's why Peacemaker ended the way it did. You know, maybe that's a little connection to all of these other dimensions where we'll come back together in the future.
[01:21:01] Maybe he's in there with the lantern sometimes. Yeah. Unable to make it because he doesn't know the password. Maybe it's that. Alan also had some thoughts on last week's podcast saying, I love the series so far and enjoying your coverage, but I will never understand the widespread preference among so many fans, including you for Iron Man three over Iron Man two. It's hard to compare with the first film because that's obviously the origin story, but I absolutely prefer Iron Man two over three and comparing it to Thor two.
[01:21:31] Thanks Alan. Interestingly, we have done 11 years of podcasting and we have done most of the Marvel movies, but we've never covered an Iron Man movie on the podcast here. We've never given our thoughts on what Iron Man one, two or three in detail are. We've obviously mentioned them many times. So people are very aware as, as Alan is that for the most part, we like Iron Man three more than Iron Man two.
[01:21:55] It would be interesting to realize, Alan, that our producer is a Captain America fan. That might be why we haven't done Iron Man. Nope. Nope. We started on Avengers Age of Ultron. That was our first ever movie podcast that we did while we were waiting for Gotham to start back up, I think next season, wasn't it? I mean, if I'm totally honest, I might need to go and revisit Iron Man two, but it's just, I'm not saying it's a bad film.
[01:22:20] I'll still watch it, but I think for Iron Man, one and three are my favorite for sure. I actually think I prefer Iron Man three over Iron Man one. I'm sorry. Because Iron Man one's the origin. Yeah. And I knew the origin going into the Iron Man movie. So I was like, they did a great job putting this on screen. Give me another story in the Iron Man universe, but not two. Give me another one. And they gave a great one with Iron Man three. And again, part of the reason for that is that it's a Shane Black movie and it's a Shane
[01:22:47] Black movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, something you don't get very often anymore with writers and directors in the MCU is them coming in, bringing their experience and turning it into an MCU movie. And Shane Black very much did his type of movie in the MCU back then. He was allowed to go a little wild with the characters, which they don't really do as much anymore. And it is well. Kiss, kiss, bang, bang. Exactly. That's what Shane Black's well known for.
[01:23:13] But also things like Last Boy Scout and yeah, his his all of his all of his Christmas action movies, which Iron Man three is definitely. So, yes. Sorry for the preferences, but I might have to watch it again because I yeah, I just need to watch it again just to reconfirm my prejudice. And I think and really what I'm actually trying to say is we probably should go back and review all the rest of the movies that we didn't review in the MCU. There's only about six or eight of them.
[01:23:44] But I still don't mind this. I mean, I don't mind Thor 2 either. I think it's just the fact that, you know, didn't necessarily hit the mark, but I still don't mind Thor 2. We've had to watch that many more times because it's been incorporated so much into the MCU. We've actually probably seen Thor 2 more than we've seen Iron Man 2. Yeah. Yeah. But Iron Man 2 has hammer time. So you got to love it. And it has a lot of Nick Fury in there. And Mickey Rourke, which that's what the reason why I really was looking forward to it.
[01:24:12] And came away going, he was okay, but Justin Hammer was excellent. Yeah, that is true. Great stuff. Thanks, Alan. Yes. Thank you, Alan. Over on Discord. Richard Blaze says, Seeing online some criticism of the portrayal of Hal Jordan, but not knowing the character, can't really comment on it. As to the Manhunter identity, I think I pretty much picked everyone apart from Hal or John being the culprit.
[01:24:42] Not quite as good as the Penguin, but certainly in the ballpark. Great stuff, Richard. Yeah. And like you say, I mean, the Penguin was excellent DC TV here. And I think we're getting the same again with Lantons. I think it's just different for me. I think I really, but I love the Penguin TV show. Again, it's hard to kind of differentiate them. Of course, you know, the Penguin is connected to the Matt Reeves Batman movies. There's going to be another Matt Reeves Batman movie.
[01:25:11] But once that's done and maybe a second season of the Penguin is done, that's the end of the Matt Reeves universe. And then we'll have a Batman in the James Gunn universe, apparently, potentially, in the future at some point. But the Penguin was an excellent series, an excellent adult series on HBO, but not connected in with the Lantern universe. That's the challenge that we have. But really, really good. And yet, just like you, Richard, I spent the entire episode going, maybe that's the Manhunter. She's definitely the Manhunter. Oh, hang on a second.
[01:25:41] Carrie went off screen and now she's not wearing a hat. She's the Manhunter. I think I said everyone in the whole wide world is the Manhunter. Well, you said the entire town. Yeah. It's all one Manhunter. So, yeah. Maniacal laughing. Yes. I wouldn't trust our guesses for any of those. But somebody. Borg Queen. Borg Queen. That's it. And finally over Discord, Teresa says, I started listening to you guys when I was looking
[01:26:10] for a Dead Boy Detectives podcast. Immediately loved your program and started listening to episodes about some of my other favorites like the Umbrella Academy, The Boys, Penny Dreadful and The Sandman. I have to be honest, though. I've never been a fan of DC or Marvel. I've tried watching them and I just can't get into it. I checked out your Lanterns podcast just for something to listen to and you convinced me to give it a try. I'm so glad I did. I really enjoyed it. The story was interesting and the relationship between Hal Jordan and John Stewart is well written. Kelly MacDonald is very convincing as a Nebraskan sheriff.
[01:26:39] I was trying to figure out where I knew her from before I realized she was the Scottish actress in the phenomenal Geary Hadji and Department Q. All of this to say, I really love your podcast and through you I'm finding shows that I never would have even thought that I would like. Keep up the great work and I'll be tuning in for episode two. Thanks, Therese. Excellent. Thanks, Therese. Yeah, thanks, Therese. Really glad you've been enjoying The Lanterns like ourselves. And picked out some of our favorite shows over the past couple of years.
[01:27:09] The Boys, of course, our biggest show, the one that we've covered and had most of our listenership from Penny Dreadful, which myself and John covered every episode of over the course of a few months and then went into season four of Umbrella Academy, which is another one of Chris's wonderful picks for a great show that was to cover over the course of the couple of years. So fun. Yeah. And of course, The Sandman and Dead Boy Detectives in the Netflix gaming universe, which we love to talk about over the course of those couple of seasons. Really, really good. Absolutely.
[01:27:37] Wasn't Kelly MacDonald in Harry Potter as well? Wasn't she? Not Moaning Myrtle. No. She was one of the Horcruxes. The last diadem of? Yeah, of What's-Her-Face. Yeah. Yeah, that one. I can't check it out right now. Yes. But yes, she was one of the ghosts in Hogwarts. The diadem being the Horcrux. Yes, indeed. That's right. But she got her big start in Trainspotting. Yes. That was her big moment and has always been a fan favorite since then. So yeah, great to see her in here.
[01:28:03] I haven't actually seen Geary Hadji, but that's definitely one I should be checking out with Kelly MacDonald in there. Yeah, definitely. Fantastic. Thanks, Therese. And thanks, Richard, for your thoughts over on Discord. If you want to join us on our Discord, the link for Discord is in the show notes right here. I actually don't know how to read out the link for it. It changes pretty often, so you'll see it in the show notes here. Or look for TV Podcast Industries over on Discord and you can join us over there. Yes, indeed.
[01:28:31] And after we recorded, we just got a final voicemail in from Steve Brown. So we're going to put it in. Steve's going away and holidays for a few weeks, so he won't get another voicemail in. So myself and John have put the microphones back on for Steve's voicemail because it's always nice to hear from him. Absolutely, yes. Hello, TV Podcast Industries. This is Steve, and this is going to be for Lanterns, Season 1, Episode 2. I don't know what you said. I'm just now listening to your pilot episode, so I've had some delays and things.
[01:28:59] So I don't know when you said Tuesday night, if you meant Tuesday night in the States or where you are. So I'm going to send this in and see if you get it in time or not. But just real quick, my three moments. I've only watched the episode once, but it was amazing. My three power ring moments. There are power ring points is what you called them, right?
[01:29:18] Number one, John admitting to the sheriff that he wouldn't have slept with her if he knew that she was married was a good kind of closeout for that first episode because that seemed kind of weird that he would just tell her on one breath. He says, oh, I can't drink because I'm on the clock. And the next breath, he's in the truck with her having sex. So I'm glad that we got that kind of closure there. Also, that reveal at the end of Sinestro, I know nothing about the lantern mythology.
[01:29:47] I don't think I follow the comics at all. So I don't know anything about this except for what I've heard on podcasts. So I'm excited to see this story play out. And again, I'm just loving this series. A third point is just those alien detectors. As soon as I saw him walk through the metal detector without it going off, I was like, what are those? That's not right. That doesn't seem correct. And then, of course, he drags one of the bodies through and we learned that they are alien detectors. So, OK, I'm going to send this to you, see if I get it in time.
[01:30:17] If not, no worries. But loving your coverage and can't wait to hear all the questions for the pub quiz and try my hand at winning this time. All right. Talk to you later. Great stuff, Steve. Yeah, thanks so much for sharing your voicemail feedback. And that's to everybody else that's listening to the podcast. You can also share your voicemail, your thoughts about the episodes. About 90 seconds, roughly about what Steve recorded there is pretty much the right length for a bit of audio feedback to get your voice on the podcast. And Steve mentioned there that we're cut off time for feedback.
[01:30:46] We're aiming to record our podcast on Tuesday nights each week, UK time or Irish time. So if you get it in by lunchtime, US time, you should get it at a time for our podcast. I think Steve was about 20 minutes after we'd finished recording and suddenly popped up as I was leaving the room. So we had to hear his thoughts, though. Definitely. Absolutely. And I love your thoughts on John saying that to Zoe. I thought that was just a good moment in this episode. And you're right.
[01:31:16] It closes out that kind of whole thing. I mean, maybe him saying, well, I'm on the clock right at the start. So he wasn't drinking was maybe just a way for conversation. And, you know, because I think then it got a little bit deeper. And then I guess he took his chance. He's an opportunistic lovemaker, I guess, in this sense. So, yeah, like that. I'm the same as you. I wouldn't have a clue about Green Lanterns or the Guardians.
[01:31:46] They're getting better already. Vaguely, you know, Sinestro and the notion that there is a Yellow Lantern Corps and they're evil. It's almost a bit like with the Flash, with the Yellow Flash being the evil one. And I guess that's the signifier here. I know he's not called Yellow Flash. No, no, no. Because they're even more specific in the Flash universe. Again, in DC, they call him the reverse Flash because the reverse of a good guy is a bad guy. Yes, well, that's true. That's it. Yes, you're right. It's all flooding back now.
[01:32:16] All speeding back to me. Seven seasons of DC TV. Yes, it's the reverse Flash. But equally, watching the Emerald Knights, the animation, that was kind of quite useful. I'm slightly tempted to see the old movie again. Really? I don't remember it other than it being awful. But even that is a figment of my imagination now because I literally can't remember.
[01:32:46] Whereas I still am vividly aware that Fan Force shtick absolutely was awful. It was terrible. I just suspect it was a movie of its day possibly buttressing up against some of the Nolan stuff maybe. Kind of. I think there's a tendency these days to say, oh, I remember that. That was much better than I thought it was at the time. There's a real tendency.
[01:33:11] We are absolutely spoiled by great cinematic treatments of superheroes now. We have whatever, 37 Marvel movies I think it is to date, which were all pretty much of the highest quality you can get in a series. We have about five or six of the DC movies in the Snyderverse, which were really well-made films. Even if you didn't like them all, there were really well-made films with really good stories in there. You have all of the movies from the Nolan trilogy, the Batmans. They were really well-made.
[01:33:40] Tim Burton's Batmans were really well-made. And then you had Green Lantern, which was a standout and awfulness. You know, I absolutely remember watching it with my jaw dropping going, wow, they actually are still making movies like this when so many other good ones. You remember, you know, Madame Web. Yes, I was literally about to say Madame Web. Those ones in the Spider-verse that don't have Tom Holland in them. It's that kind of level. And remember watching those and you get about half an hour into it going, why am I even wasting my time watching this?
[01:34:10] That's pretty much Green Lantern. Morbius is the same. It's just like, what is happening here? Okay, yeah. As I say, though, I don't really have any recollection of the Ryan Reynolds. And maybe it's been sort of tarnished or maybe it's been lifted, I should say, rather than tarnished by Ryan Reynolds now in Deadpool and equally with Welcome to Wrexham. So I might just be giving him the benefit of the doubt. He likes to take the piss out of how bad he was, but he's not lying. That's the thing. Grant.
[01:34:38] He knows he was hard done. He got paid. He moved on, didn't he? Well, exactly. Yeah. But he didn't want to have that be his legacy in movies. So thankfully, he got another chance with Deadpool afterwards. That's kind of the way he sees it. But yeah, he got his pay. But I think I'm learning more and more about the Lanterns and I'm kind of enjoying it, really. I kind of do like the fact that it's grounded in this mystery and detective element. So that's always a positive for me, I guess.
[01:35:07] So yeah, I'm looking forward to the next episodes and to learn a bit more about at least Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart, as well as the Green Lanterns. Absolutely. Yeah. And you'll be learning alongside us, Steve, as well. So any questions you have, we can always fire them out to our wonderful listeners, our wonderful fellow guardians, and see if they have an answer for things that we don't know as well. So thanks so much for sending in your voicemail feedback to us.
[01:35:35] We will hand you back over to say goodbye to Chris. Thanks to everybody for all of your feedback so far. Yeah. Thanks, Steve. Thanks, everyone. Yes. Thank you so much for joining us. And I can't wait to be back with you next week as well. Absolutely. Yes. It'll be great to have all three of us back for the next episode of Lanterns. Indeed. Please stay subscribed, fellow Lanterns, to the podcast. And, of course, if you enjoy what you hear, why not share it with your friends, family, relatives, grandmas, granddads, I think we used to say.
[01:36:03] Or a Manhunter who's replaced each of them. Manhunters as well. Because, of course, sharing the podcast is sharing the love. Indeed. But we will be back next week with The Lanterns, episode three. But, of course, until then, fellow Lanterns, keep watching, keep listening, and, of course, keep shining through. Bye. Bye. Bye.
[01:36:58] It's a Damon Lindelof kind of special. Linger. Yeah. The Lindelof Linger. The Lindelof Linger. Yeah. Try that one more time. It's the Lindelof Linger. Yep. I didn't really investigate any backstory around Earl. So, not a clue. Other than it is a carnivorous plant. So, I was thinking, ooh, Triffid.
[01:37:28] Day of the Triffids type thing. Or, yeah, Little Shop of Horrors. Something that's come down from space. I was absolutely singing Feed Me John. Feed Me John Stewart. That's what I was singing. 2026, we do see a relatively, the town's still there. Not necessarily the ranch. And so is Kelly.
[01:37:56] And at least she does mention. That's Chris's wife. It's Kelly Kane. No, it's Kerry Kane. Oh, Kerry Kane. I've written Kelly all the way through this. Yeah. And that maybe explains a little bit more about Waylon's kind of tone towards Hal. Yeah. As a Green Guardian. So. As Green Lantern.
[01:38:26] Oh, yeah. As Green Guardian of the Galaxy. Yes. Um. But we will be back next week with The Lanterns, episode three. Until then, of course. Keep watching. Keep listening. What? Until then. Until then. You said then. You didn't say then. I said until then. I was trying to abridge it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
